‘t Is niet altijd gemakkelijk, de liefde. Zeker niet wanneer je constant op elkaars lip leeft. Omdat je samen circus maakt bijvoorbeeld. Hoeveel borden zouden er al niet gesneuveld zijn door artistieke discussies aan de afwas? Bij Bert & Fred sneuvelt er echter nog meer.
‘8 years, 5 months, 4 weeks, 2 days.’ Neen, het gaat hier niet om een verwijzing naar de Roemeense Gouden Palm-winnaar 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days – al zou een circusvoorstelling over een verboden abortus onder het regime van dictator Ceauşescu wel revolutionair zijn. Neen, de titel slaat op het aantal dagen, weken, maanden en jaren dat Bert Loenders en Fréderique Snoeks al een koppel zijn. Fingers crossed dat er geen haar in de boter komt bij de geliefden!
Strijd der seksen
Het mag duidelijk zijn: circuskoppel Bert & Fred houdt het al behoorlijk lang uit. “En dat is niet altijd gemakkelijk,” geeft Bert bij aanvang van de voorstelling toe in de micro. De ups en downs van een relatie, gespiegeld aan de ups-and-downs van een creatieproces: het is een eenvoudig, maar sterk concept. De komische noot is daarbij nooit veraf. Wanneer de volle zaal lacht om de charmante guitigheid van Berts openingsbetoog, zet Fred hem met enkele snelle technische ingrepen vrij letterlijk in zijn hemd. Ze maakt duidelijk wie in het koppel de broek draagt, en zet zo de toon voor een verbeten strijd tussen de seksen. Een strijd waarin de verhoudingen in een wip kunnen omslaan, en niemand ooit de eindwinnaar is.
Bert & Fred bespelen het publiek als volleerde circuscomedians. Hun acts zijn tot in de puntjes verzorgd, het duo weet hoe het met een kleine beweging of oogopslag een zaal kan platgooien van het lachen. Maar zelf blijven ze bloedserieus. Ze brengen geen circus dat laat zien hoe plezant circus wel is, maar gaan professioneel met hun vak om en laten het amusement over aan de toeschouwer. Bert & Fred bewaren te allen tijde hun cool en weten zo een uitgepuurd circustheater te brengen met een komische timing die juist zit tot op de milliseconde.
Dit talent heeft zich uiteraard niet ontwikkeld over één nacht ijs. Het helpt dat Bert & Fred een aantal van hun acts al enige tijd op het repertoire hebben staan en over de hele wereld hebben uitgetest. Het duo viel daarbij regelmatig in de prijzen. Maar gelukkig spelen Bert & Fred niet op safe: ‘8 years, 5 months, 4 weeks, 2 days’ is zeker geen samenraapsel van afzonderlijke acts, uitgerekt tot een avondvullend programma. Bert & Fred weten er een geheel van te maken. De overgangen verlopen vloeiend en bij het merendeel kloppen ze ook inhoudelijk. Slechts hier en daar is er gekozen voor fun in plaats van dramaturgie: het vieren van de liefde wordt plotsklaps een vieren in het algemeen wanneer er nogal vanuit het niets een taart op scène wordt gebracht. Uiteraard is het leuk wanneer die niet veel later in Berts gezicht belandt, maar iets meer noodzakelijkheid achter het voorwerp had deze act inhoudelijk interessanter kunnen maken.
Karikaturen van zichzelf
‘8 years, 5 months, 4 weeks, 2 days’ is in de eerste plaats een komische show, die niets anders ambieert dan dat ze boeit en pleziert. Daarin slagen Bert & Fred met bravoure. Meestal vertrekken ze van een traditionele circustechniek – messenwerpen bijvoorbeeld – en geven er hun eigen draai aan. Allerlei scherpe objecten vallen van metershoog naar beneden, en als dat niet volstaat, worden ze bijgestaan door een dreigend schril klinkende tuinzaag. Ook de ooit op zwart-wit televisie getoonde act van de bloem die met een zweep uit iemands mond wordt geklakt, krijgt binnen de context van het liefdeskoppel een geheel nieuwe betekenis. Bert & Fred lijken inspiratie te halen uit het verleden, maar updaten het naar kleur met een eigentijdse absurditeit en fysieke aanwezigheid die doet denken aan de performancekunst.
Hun personages – karikaturen van zichzelf – houden Bert & Fred consequent aan. Fred is de harde tante, een stoere vrouw die je met omzichtigheid moet behandelen. Bert is de sloef. Voor een gevaarlijke act vraagt Fréderique altijd ‘Ok?’. Bert antwoordt, als alles veilig is, met ‘ok’. Een code eigen aan het circus, maar hier ook sprekend voor de verhouding tussen de twee. Zeker wanneer achter Berts positieve antwoord een angstige onzekerheid schuilgaat. Met twee korte woordjes wordt een heel palet aan relaties getoond. Simpel, grappig en geen woord te veel. Helaas geldt dat laatste niet voor alle scènes: het reflectieve moment waarin Bert mijmert over de avonturen die hij en zijn gade hebben beleefd en nog zullen beleven is een vreemde eend in de bijt. De boodschap is mooi (circus als metafoor voor de liefde), maar komt niet zo sterk over.
Hetzelfde geldt voor de scène waarin Fred haar adem inhoudt terwijl Bert zijn kunsten demonstreert aan de straps. Zolang hij in de lucht is, dompelt zij haar gezicht onder in een kom water en mag niet naar adem happen. Naast het feit dat de link tussen de straps en het adem inhouden nogal willekeurig is, zie je niet altijd even goed of Fred echt haar adem inhoudt of niet. Op theater wordt er wel vaker gefaket, dus misschien heeft ze wel een systeempje om te ademen. Maar zelfs als je haar het voordeel van de twijfel geeft, komt de worsteling die zij ondergaat niet helemaal over. Ze werkt niet in op je lichaam. En dat is jammer, want daardoor komt de wreedheid van Bert in die scène niet helemaal tot zijn recht. Een wreedheid die nochtans mooi zou contrasteren met zijn gewoonlijke slaafsheid en zijn personage op die manier een stuk krachtiger zou maken. Zeker wanneer hij daarna weer gewoon de underdog speelt.
Diepgang
Naast alle gekheid tonen Bert & Fred hun acrobatische talent aan de Washington trapeze. Het is knap om te zien hoe ze op hun hoofd in balans blijven terwijl de trapeze op en neer gaat, maar binnen het omkaderende verhaal van hun liefdesgeschiedenis hebben deze scènes minder betekenis. Het idee om de acts te linken aan het gegeven van een koppel dat kookt, is nog wel leuk bedacht en doet denken aan Jan Fabres ‘Quando l’uomo principale é una donna’. Ook hier die strijd tussen man en vrouw. Bij Fabre danste Lisbeth Gruwez een choreografie onder een hemel van flessen olijfolie, waaruit langzaam druppels naar beneden vielen. Gruwez probeerde tussen het dansen door de ideale martini samen te stellen. Telkens wanneer ze nog niet geslaagd was, deed ze een kledingstuk uit en danste verder. Totdat ze volledig naakt, druipend van de olie als een goddelijk vrouwenbeeld over de vloer gleed. Bij Bert & Fred is het iets braver en, toegegeven, iets minder krachtig.
Desalniettemin zorgen Bert & Fred bijna anderhalf uur voor vermakelijk entertainment. Hun circus lijkt haast stand-up comedy. En daar is het duo erg goed in. Je zou ze kunnen verwijten dat ze niet diep genoeg ingaan op een aantal boeiende thema’s die binnen handbereik liggen – de man-vrouw relatie, de wreedheid van de mens voor zijn geliefden, het contrast van het sterke vrouwenlichaam tegenover de onderdanige man – maar erg ver gaan Bert & Fred daar niet in. Ze doen vooral wat ze goed doen, met een overtuigend staaltje humor. Voor een eerste voorstelling hoeft dat niet meer te zijn. Die diepgang kan later nog.
