Niet goed wetende wat te verwachten, trek ik naar zaal Zurenborger in Antwerpen voor de nieuwjaarsbijeenkomst van de ‘Kring Vlaamse Gewesten’, een groep liefhebbers van het klassieke circus, verbonden aan de Nederlandse Circusvrienden. In dit duffe achterafzaaltje met voornamelijk mensen van de derde leeftijd, voel ik me een beetje de vreemde eend in de bijt. Maar deze zondagnamiddag blijkt toch onverwacht interessant te zijn: ik steek veel op van de powerpointpresentaties (jawel!) en de gesprekken met bestuursleden Rudy Van Caillie en Frieda Van Camp.
Voorzitter Rudy Van Caillie neemt het openingswoord. Hij is een bijzonder charismatische figuur die met zijn vlotte vertelling over de Parijse wintercircussen de ongeveer veertig toehoorders in de zaal moeiteloos entertaint. Zijn voordracht lardeert hij met allerlei foto’s, filmpjes en schalkse humor. De aanwezige leden delen duidelijk eenzelfde jargon. Er wordt gegoocheld met namen van buitenlandse klassieke circussen waar ik nog nooit van hoorde en meermaals klinkt er een instemmend geknik of komen er kreten van herkenning uit de zaal. De term ‘vrouwelijk schoon’ valt toch ook gemakkelijk een tiental keer. Zoals bij de foto’s van “Helena, de voetbaljongleuse” of bij “de onverslijtbare Régina te paard,” waarna iemand uit het publiek “Bijgenaamd ‘La Belle’!” roept. Rudy kent duidelijk ook alle inside stories en intriges uit de wereld van het klassieke circus. Kwistig strooit hij met anekdotes zoals “Eigenlijk is Alexandre Romanès de echte Alexandre Bouglione, als kind van Firmin Bouglione. Maar omdat hij vond dat de gipsy-cultuur te weinig deel uitmaakte van het Bouglione-imperium, brak hij met de familie.” De hele zaal ligt zelfs plat van het lachen wanneer hij Alexandre Romanès citeert over zijn rommelige zigeunerleven: “Ik heb 14 zwerfkatten en vier dochters. Tous sauvages.”
Winter in Parijs
Maar ik leer ook veel bij deze namiddag. Mijn kennis over de Parijse wintercircussen was vooraf immers zo goed als onbestaande. Een korte samenvatting van het landschap, omdat we het educatieve gehalte van dit CircusMagazine toch wat willen opkrikken.
De Bougliones kochten het bekende Cirque d’Hivêr in Parijs en voerden er ondertussen reeds hun zestiende wintershow op, ‘Géant’. Centraal staan drie reusachtige olifanten. Volgens Rudy is ‘Géant’ een typische Bouglione-creatie: “Dik in orde, maar toch voor de helft bestaande uit lichteffecten en spectaculaire elementen.” De scène met het zweefvliegtuigje is de meest besproken scène, maar volgens Rudy zeker niet de beste. Hier ontwaart zich een breuklijn waar ik het later met Rudy nog over zou hebben: in hoeverre kunnen nieuwe, hedendaagse of technologische elementen infiltreren in het klassieke circus?
Ook de andere Parijse wintercircussen krijgen ruime aandacht. Alexis Gruss & Les Farfadais brachten ‘Pégase & Icare’ in het Bois de Bologne (Rudy: “Zorg dat je met de auto de juiste uitrit neemt in het bos, anders mag je aan je kind uitleggen waarom er schaars geklede meisjes met korte rokjes tussen de bomen verstoppertje spelen”). Net als bij ‘Géant’ krijgen we ook de promotrailer van ‘Pégase & Icare’ te zien. Het valt me op dat beide teasers straffe en epische filmpjes zijn. De grote (klassieke) circussen zijn duidelijk bijzonder goed geworden in het aan de man brengen van hun voorstellingen. Dat moet volgens mij ook wel, als je moet concurreren tegen andere commerciële eindejaarshows. Over ‘Pégase & Icare’ is Rudy erg te spreken: “Dit is meer intellectueel, dit is meer de grote kunst. Een sublieme vertoning.”
Op de Pelouse de Reuilly, ten zuidoosten van Parijs, spelen maar liefst drie verschillende compagnies. Cirque Arlette Gruss is daar eentje van. Met zijn 160 lentes is Le Pinder echter het oudste circus. Rudy vertelt ons dat hun spiksplinternieuwe tent afgelopen winter een windvlaag niet overleefde en gauw vervangen moest worden door een oudere tent, waardoor de speelreeks twee weken verlengd werd. Het meest grootschalige circus is echter Phénix: met zo’n 6000 plaatsen heeft het naar eigen zeggen de grootste circustent ter wereld. In hun meest recente voorstelling ‘CIRKAFRIKA2, de Soweto à Harlem’ brengen zij geen dieren, maar wekken ze wel sfeervolle Afrikaanse beelden op. Veel van deze gezelschappen teren voor een groot deel van hun inkomsten op groepen die komen kijken of bedrijven die voorstellingen uitkopen voor hun personeel, een fenomeen dat je hier veel minder ziet (ik herinner me nog hoe ik met mijn ouders – die bij een grote bank werken – ooit eens naar The Night of the Proms ging, enkel voor het personeel van de bank: een vreemde ervaring).
Et le nouveau cirque?
Aan het eind van zijn presentatie volgt nog een korte vermelding over het hedendaagse circus in Parijs. “Wij hebben het hier altijd maar over het klassieke circus, maar zeker in Frankrijk is le nouveau cirque omnipresent.” Rudy toont affiches van Cie Les 7 Doigts de la Main, ‘Quidam’ van Cirque du Soleil en het hedendaagse festival Cirque de Demain. Achteraf vraag ik Rudy of hij ook naar het nieuwe circus gaat kijken. “Weinig, je moet keuzes maken. Ook in het hedendaagse circus blijft een salto een salto en een wipplank een wipplank, maar toch mis ik de sfeer van de entourage die rond een klassiek circus hangt. Een ticketje kopen voor een voorstelling in een schouwburg is toch niet hetzelfde als voor een show in een circustent.” Frieda Van Camp, secretaris van de Kring, verwoordt het later treffend: “Ik wil de geur van zaagsel ruiken wanneer ik naar het circus ga.” Wat vinden ze dan bijvoorbeeld van Circus Ronaldo? Frieda: “Schitterend! Maar Circus Ronaldo is eigenlijk geen circus, wel commedia dell’arte. Al moet het gezegd: zij zijn een schitterende ambassadeur voor het circus in Vlaanderen.”
Rollende nijlpaarden
“De leden van onze vereniging zijn nogal fan van dieren in het circus,” zal Frieda Van Camp me later toefluisteren. De grote favoriet van de aanwezigen blijken de Casselly’s te zijn, die hun olifantenact in het Cirque d’Hiver opvoeren. In een clandestien gemaakt filmpje (“Illegaler dan een witte neger die in het zwart de afwas doet in een Italiaans restaurant,” aldus Rudy) zie ik hoe deze dikhuiden allerlei trucjes uithalen met krukjes, en de acrobaten nog grotere stunts uitvoeren door zich – met een olifantenpoot als lanceerder – via een wipplank in de lucht te laten katapulteren om na enkele achterwaartse salto’s op de rug van een andere olifant te landen. De echte kenners vroegen zich al af waarom er maar drie in plaats van vier olifanten in het filmpje te zien zijn, maar daar weet Freddy Vindevogel een antwoord op. “De vergunningen van Mambo, de vierde olifant, waren niet in orde en dus mocht hij niet meedoen.” Freddy vertelt ook de anekdote van dompteur Rene Casselly die bij zijn olifanten in het Cirque d’Hiver overnacht, omdat de dieren tussen twee voorstellingsdagen niet terug vervoerd kunnen worden naar hun buitenverblijf. Rene zou momenteel ook rondlopen met een zorgwekkende oogwonde, omdat de repetities voor een nieuwe cabriol-act met een pony slecht afliepen. Freddy kijkt erg uit naar de nieuwe show van de Casselly’s, waarin zowel olifanten, giraffen, zebra’s als kamelen te zien zijn. De vereniging plant er later dit jaar zelfs een uitstap naar Hongarije voor.
Freddy Vindevogel reist samen met zijn zoon geregeld tot in Rusland om verschillende circussen te kunnen zien, speciaal om de dressuurnummers. Hij leerde in de avondschool zelfs Russisch om met de artiesten te kunnen praten. De overgave waarmee de leden van deze vereniging zich op hun passie smijten, is indrukwekkend. Freddy toont ons ook een nijlpaardnummer van Tofik Akhundov. Ik geloof m’n ogen niet! Drie nijlpaarden waggelen door de piste en doen op bevel allerlei trucs, waarvan de spectaculairste een tuimel over de rug is en eentje waarbij de nijlpaarden met hun voorpoten op elkaars rug leunen. Erg gelukkig lijken die beesten me alleszins niet te zijn. Frieda countert: “Onze Nederlandse koepelvereniging protesteerde tegen het verbod van wilde dieren in het circus door aan alle parlementariërs een brief te schrijven. Daarvoor baseerden ze zich op een wetenschappelijke studie die aantoonde dat de bewegingen die wilde dieren in een circus uitvoeren veel beter voor hen zijn dan een luilekkerleven te leiden in de zoo. In Vlaanderen is er veel minder protest tegen dit verbod. De nomadische circussen reageerden dat zij toch al enkele jaren geen wilde dieren meer gebruikten in hun voorstellingen. Dat is de zaak omdraaien natuurlijk.”
Teloorgang van het circus
Als Rudy zo gepassioneerd is, heeft hij dan nooit een job in het circus overwogen? “Nee hoor. Te hard, te moeilijk, te slecht betaald!” Toch is hij meer dan enkel een liefhebber. “Soms springen we al eens in wanneer een klassiek circus het moeilijk heeft.” Frieda beaamt: “Bill Kartoum, die ook naar onze evenementen komt, vraagt ons soms om hem te komen helpen wanneer hij een personeelstekort heeft. Zo heb ik bij hem al eens achter de bar gestaan of ticketjes gescheurd.” Rudy: “Wanneer je jaar in jaar uit naar circus gaat, leer je de artiesten ook kennen. Ik reis erg veel om circusshows te kunnen zien. Zo ga ik ieder jaar twee weken naar Zwitserland, onder andere om mijn favoriete gezelschap Circus Knie te zien. Jaarlijks ga ik ook een week naar Parijs voor de wintercircussen. Ook in Nederland is er echt een circuit van kerstcircussen. In elke stad heb je er eentje, en de tenten zitten altijd vol.”
Hoe komt het dat dit bij ons niet het geval is? Frieda: “België is rampzalig! Allereerst is het een kwestie van kwaliteit natuurlijk. Zolang er geen samenwerking is tussen de verschillende circusdirecteurs, en de gezelschappen meer bezig zijn met het beconcurreren van elkaar om de beste plaats in een stad te pakken te krijgen dan om een goede show te maken, zie ik weinig beterschap. Het succes van weleer komt niet terug als circusgezelschappen geen plaats in het centrum van een stad krijgen en er geen wilde dieren mogen meedoen in hun voorstellingen. Want geef toe, de mensen die niet in onze liefhebbersvereniging zitten, gaan toch vooral naar het circus met hun kinderen. En wat willen die kinderen zien? Clowns en dieren. Aan acrobaten en driedubbele salto’s hebben zij geen boodschap.”
