De oudste actieve circusdirecteur van Europa is niet meer. Leo Verswijvel, alias Bill Kartoum, speelde zijn laatste voorstelling in augustus en overleed op 5 november 2016 in het ziekenhuis van Wilrijk. Hij werd net geen 88. Als eerbetoon laat CircusMagazine Bill Kartoum zelf aan het woord. Een afscheid in 16 quotes.
Over zijn jeugdjaren
“Als kind in een groot gezin leerde ik snel mijn plan trekken. Daar was ik straf in. Maar als ik ’s middags mijn eten niet uit at, zei moeder: ‘Ge moet niet, jongen.’ En ’s avonds kreeg ik hetzelfde opnieuw te eten.”
“Als het circus van mijn ouders gedurende enkele dagen ergens op een plein stond, werd ik samen met mijn broers in het dorpsschooltje gedropt. Als de meester dan hoorde waar we vandaan kwamen, liet hij ons een toertje uithalen, op onze handen lopen, op onze kop staan of andere kunstjes vertonen, in plaats van ons wat bij te brengen. Wij golden daar als een attractie. Leren, dat was niet aan ons besteed. Studeerkansen heb ik dus eigenlijk niet gekregen. Het resultaat is er ook naar, ik kan met moeite lezen en een beetje schrijven.”
Over het buitenland & zijn filmcarrière
“Irak was een fantastisch land, zolang ge niet over politiek begon te lullen of alcohol dronk. Er was nog geen godsdienstfanatisme, de vrijheid was er veel groter dan bij ons. Hippies vanuit de hele wereld kwamen er voor een habbekrats enorme zakken drugs kopen.”
“In Korea organiseerde ik in legerkantines een showke met drie topless vrouwen, voor de Amerikaanse troepen. Die mannen hadden wekenlang geen vrouwenvlees gezien, ge kunt u voorstellen wat dat gaf.”
“Ik speelde in vele films, waarvan maar vier goeie. Ik moest bijna altijd de kwade schutter of bandiet spelen die dan meestal in het begin van de film werd doodgeschoten, zodat ik al na één of twee draaidagen naar huis mocht. Ik heb trouwens nooit een sprekende rol gekregen in mijn filmloopbaan. Ik moest altijd zwijgen. Eén keer, ja, toen moest ik één zinnetje zeggen, maar nadien hebben ze er de stem van een ander op geplakt.”
“In Spanje gaf mijn auto de geest. Hij was niet meer te herstellen. Dus liet ik hem gewoon achter, haalde alles eruit, nam de nummerplaat weg en stak hem in brand. Als ik al lang terug thuis was, kreeg ik bericht van de politie dat men mijn auto gevonden had, en dat ik hem mocht komen ophalen, maar dat dieven hem in brand hadden gestoken. Ik had nooit aan het chassisnummer gedacht. Daarom zweeg ik wijselijk en liet hem waar hij was.”
Over wilde dieren
“Dieren zijn zoals mensen: met de smeerlappen hebt ge minder kans op ambras, omdat ge weet dat ze een slecht karakter hebben. De meegaande, vriendelijke types: dat zijn de gevaarlijkste. Een lamme leeuw waarmee ik nooit last had gehad, gaf me ineens een klauw. Mijn hand lag aan flarden. Sindsdien heb ik geen gevoel meer in mijn vingertoppen.”
“Er waren eens beren losgebroken. Ze vonden hen rondwandelend in de kerk. Doordat ze altijd goed gevoed werden, waren ze niet gevaarlijk. Maar het schrikte de bevolking wel op en het bezorgde ons gratis publiciteit. We hebben ook eens een buffel gehad. Ik zat er eens op en vloog ermee in een haag. We hebben de buffel moeten afmaken, want we konden er geen weg mee.”
“Mijn leeuwen, dat waren vreemde dieren. Ze waren allergisch voor vrouwen. Telkens wanneer ze in de piste verschenen en ze een vrouw aan de rand van de ring opmerkten, draaiden ze zich ostentatief om en begonnen ze te plassen. Dat kon niet zijn, dus heb ik hen dat moeten afleren.”
“Anciaux discrimineert zijn eigen circusvolk en speelt onder één hoedje met die paljas van Gaia. Ze willen dat wij allemaal Cirque du Soleil worden.”
“In plaats van ons te kloten zoudt ge beter vogels gaan wassen die onder de olie zitten. Dan zoudt ge een echte vent zijn.” (tegen Michel Vandenbosch in het VTM-programma Recht op Antwoord, 2005)
Over kwetsuren
“Toen de knal kwam, bleef ik met de scherpe hakken van mijn cowboyboots haperen aan de kanonwand en zo belandde ik met een sierlijke zwaai voor het net. Het publiek was uitzinnig, ik had gebroken benen en werd onder luid applaus in triomf op een berrie de piste rondgevoerd en vervolgens naar een ziekenwagen gebracht.”
“Ik weet niet hoeveel keren ik een breuk opliep. Ik ben ook eens uit een mast gevallen, met een schouderbreuk als gevolg. Mijn dokter heeft mij gevraagd om mijn lichaam na mijn dood aan de wetenschap te schenken. De professoren willen nagaan hoe het mogelijk is dat mijn botten na al die breuken telkens weer aan elkaar gegroeid zijn.”
Over werken & ouder worden
“Ik werk liever vierentwintig uur voor mijn eigen dan acht uur voor een baas. En heb ik geld om te eten, dan eet ik rijkelijk. Heb ik er geen, dan eet ik een boterham.”
“Werken houdt me jong. Ik zie er velen die op vijfenvijftig jaar al met pensioen gaan. Dat begint met visgerief te kopen, of in de zetel te zitten tv-kijken. Op de duur krijgen ze pijn aan de rug en hebben ze een buikgezwel aangekweekt.”
“Het circusleven is een schoon leven, vol verrassingen. De vrijheid, het applaus, de dankbaarheid van de mensen, dat zijn uw vitaminen voor het leven.”
