De Ashton Brothers zijn al ruim vijftien jaar een succes in Nederland cabaretland. Het geheim achter de volle zalen? Hun unieke blend van comedy en circus. Ook in hun nieuwste show ‘Enfants terribles’ spelen ze die mix ten volle uit. Maar is het vooral schaterlachen, om de hoek lonkt ook Pietje de Dood.
Pim Muda, Joost Spijkers, Friso van Vemde Oudejans en Pepijn Gunneweg leerden elkaar kennen op de Amsterdamse Kleinkunstacademie. Toen ze op school als eindejaarsvoorstelling een acrobatenact in elkaar moesten steken, zochten ze inspiratie bij het boekje ‘Acrobatiek voor beginners: deel 1.’ De kiem voor de Ashton Brothers was gezaaid. Sindsdien spelen ze met hun shows de Nederlandse schouwburgen plat. In ‘Enfants terribles’ is dat voor het eerst met drie (Pepijn Gunneweg verliet eind 2014 de groep) maar in de hoeveelheid figuren en sferen die ze neerzetten is dat er nauwelijks aan te merken.
Zingend het graf in
Het circus is al in volle gang als je de schouwburgzaal betreedt. Kermismuziek schalt door de boxen, de snoepjesverkoper deelt bonbons uit, bolhoedmannetjes in bretellenpakjes en met valse plaksnorren lopen af en aan, op de scène een allegaartje van kostuums, decorstukken en muziekinstrumenten. Alles ademt de belofte van een avondje mindless spektakel ware het niet dat als vanitas te midden dit alles enkele geraamten hangen.
Als klassiek cabaret en circus één iets gemeenschappelijks hebben dan is het wel de opbouw in nummertjes, en deze volgen elkaar hier in razend tempo op. Van de typische goochelaarstruc waarbij handen en benen vanachter een scherm worden opgerekt tot een paardendressuur. Traditioneel? Allerminst, de goochelaarstruc lijkt verdacht veel op een losse-handjesbordeel en de dresseur is in deze een man met een paardenkop die enkele bejaarde, vervaarlijk uitziende clowns in rollators van de zweep geeft.
Het is de Ashton Brothers als enfants terrribles ten voeten uit. Ze steken de draak met karakters uit de commedia dell’arte: voeren een dronken Arlecchino op die hangend aan een elastiek zijn liefde voor een vrouw op de eerste rij bezingt (in een bijzonder mooie versie van My Funny Valentine) of plakken het snavelmasker van de Dottore op de gekortwiekte vogel die met krukken de nok probeert te bereiken. Humor en tragiek gaan hier hand in hand, zacht en hard, stunteligheid en kunde evenzeer.
Een van de indrukwekkendste momenten is misschien wel de gebochelde man in tutu en valhelm die zich tot de stervende zwaan op pointes ontpopt. Om vervolgens weer afgeknald te worden door een van de killerclowns (die als running gag doorheen de voorstelling circuleren). Tranen van het lachen: niet voor niets liggen beide emoties zo dicht bij elkaar. Onder elke grap schuilt tragiek. De tragiek van pech, gebrek, verval en uiteindelijk ook de dood, getuige de blacklightscène waarin fluorescerende geraamten aan het dansen gaan als was Tim Burtons Corpse Bride ermee gemoeid.
‘Enfants terribles’ is donkerder en stouter dan we van de Ashton Brothers gewoon zijn en zo hebben we het graag. Al zit er zeker nog rek op hun mix van visuele comedy, muziek en circus. Kunnen veel circusartiesten een puntje zuigen aan hun gevoel voor humor en acteerkwaliteiten, dan ligt ook voor de Ashton Brothers nog een onontgonnen terrein te ontdekken in de mogelijkheden van circus. Om voorbij het boekje ‘Acrobatiek voor beginners: deel 1’ op zoek te gaan naar het (opr)echte gevaar, het performante hic et nunc dat zich niet laat beteugelen. In al hun professionalisme voelen de Ashton Brothers immers soms net iets te (Hollands?) glad. Als we werden gebeten, dan was het door het onderhuidse venijn. Zoals het Nederlandse cabaret graag een boodschap vermag, laat het hier dan deze zijn: uiteindelijk zijn we allemaal sukkelaars, die vallend en weer opstaand richting ons graf duikelen. Al zingend en lachend. Dat dan weer wel.
