Een redactielid van CircusMagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wondere wereld van het circus.
Ik stel mij U voor, beste circusminnende lezer, bij een knetterend haardvuur. Buiten heerst Koning Winter, een gure wind blaast om Uw woonwagen/circustent/artistiek verantwoorde loft, maar binnen is het lekker warm. Uw pantoffels zijn misschien niet modieus, maar ze zitten U als gegoten. Uw geliefde brengt U een kop dampende chocolademelk, en net voor de eerste slok valt Uw oog op het bijzettafeltje, waar al een paar dagen het nieuwe CircusMagazine op U ligt te wachten. Het pleit voor U dat U die nog niet ongelezen hebt gebruikt om het eerder genoemde haardvuur mee aan te steken.
In deze omstandigheden heeft het geen zin U te bruuskeren met wat vlijmscherp commentaar op het hedendaags circusbeleid, wat cynische opmerkingen over circusateliers of wat genadeloze kritiek op nieuwe voorstellingen. Deze winterperiode vraagt om een wollen dekentje van lieve woorden gewijd aan circus, vol zoetgevooisde meligheid en oprechte emoties. Een hartverwarmende, ouderwetse nieuwjaarsbrief aan het circus. U mag hem gerust in schoonschrift overschrijven om hem daarna, staand op een stoel, haperend aan Uw naasten voor te lezen.
Geachte Circus,
In deze tijd van ongebreidelde melancholie en levensbeschouwelijke mijmeringen denk ik terug aan voorbije optredens, verwante circusartiesten en verre circusreizen. Een bijna vergeten citaat van een anonieme circusartiest uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw schiet me te binnen: “Ik was een koning op aarde toen ik circusartiest was. De wetten en regels waar andere mensen moesten aan voldoen golden niet voor mij, want ik kon alles.” De trots, de vrijheid en het aan arrogantie grenzend zelfvertrouwen spatten ervan af. Ik bezat zelf niks van dat alles toen ik mijn eerste onzekere stappen waagde op het circuspad.
Beste Circus,
We hebben mekaar laattijdig, via een omweg leren kennen, maar ik ben blij dat we elkaar hebben gevonden. Mijn voordien kabbelende bestaan werd op z’n kop gezet, stevig door elkaar geschud en terug in elkaar gezet. Plots was er plaats voor Avontuur, in tijden van voorgekauwd amusement, platgetreden paden en stukgeorganiseerde “beleving”.
Toegegeven Circus,
Ik heb je vaak vervloekt. Na een voorstelling onder pijnstillers, een zoveelste gemist familiefeest of het bijwonen van een snertvoorstelling. Na nog maar eens een creatiedag zonder een greintje inspiratie, een afgekeurd dossier of een publiekelijke artistieke buiklanding. Je bent altijd geduldig op me blijven wachten en je hebt me telkens opnieuw overtuigd, met de verslavende roep van het podium of de rustgevende kracht van de oefenzaal.
Liefste Circus,
Ik heb ontdekt dat wie zich zonder omkijken in je armen gooit, het er honderdvoudig voor terug krijgt. Verre reizen en boeiende ontmoetingen, genoeg voor wel drie doorsnee mensenlevens. Een gezonde portie zelfvertrouwen, altijd handig, ook buiten de circuspiste. Een goddelijk lijf en een gefocuste geest. Een aangescherpte zelfkennis en vrienden voor het leven. Vette feestjes en navenante katers. De kans om mensen te ontroeren en het pure plezier om te creëren en uit het grote niets iets nieuws te scheppen.

Want in mijn hoofd zit nu een chaotisch fotoalbum vol onbedaarlijke lachbuien, kippenvelmomenten, hilarische toestanden en sterke verhalen. Ik hoef er maar door te bladeren om te weten wat je voor me hebt gedaan. Het mooiste wat je me gegeven hebt is echter niet in dat virtueel fotoalbum te vatten. Het is dat onmetelijk gevoel van vrijheid, dat onbetaalbare gevoel dat wetten en regels waar andere mensen moeten aan voldoen niet voor mij gelden, want ik kan alles.
