Dat de circuswereld bulkt van de familiebanden, is een historisch feit dat vandaag nog steeds geldt. Circusmagazine zoekt boeiende bloedverwanten op en haalt ze voor de lens. In deze editie: de familie Ketels.
Andreas (33, links op de foto): “Als kind waren we redelijk avontuurlijk aangelegd. We woonden op den buiten in Waarschoot: ravotten, kampen bouwen, het kon niet op … Maar na een echtscheiding zijn we in Leuven beland: klein huisje, kleine tuin. De circusschool was de ideale uitlaatklep.”
Quintijn (36): “Cirkus in Beweging was eind jaren 1990 nog een relatief klein schooltje, maar het had wel al een interessante werking, met toffe productiegroepen. Dat was de max. We traden bijna elk weekend op, ook in het buitenland.”
Emma (28): “Maar het artistieke was niet de oorspronkelijke reden om aan circus te beginnen, hè.”
Adreas: “In het begin is het: waauw, dat wil ik ook kunnen. Pas na een tijdje komt de artistieke drive om de hoek kijken.”

Quintijn: “Ik wou kostuumontwerp, archeologie of boomchirurg studeren. Maar onder invloed van Joppe Wouters, mijn toenmalige circusdocent, ben ik aan ESAC in Brussel begonnen. Direct erna heb ik met Hopla Circus intensief getoerd – veel tijd voor familie had ik niet. Nog later richtte ik samen met Aline (Breucker, zijn vrouw, red.) Side-Show op.”
Andreas: “Ik zat altijd gevangen tussen enerzijds techniek en anderzijds zelf spelen. Ik heb aan het RITCS podiumtechnieken gestudeerd en heb lang als technicus voor Circus Ronaldo gewerkt, maar ik heb ook veel opgetreden met het vuurcollectief Pyromantiek. De laatste jaren bouw ik vooral decortoepassingen voor theatergezelschappen; ik heb mijn eigen bedrijfje Kunst&Vliegmerk. En woonwagens, dat is ook mijn ding. Maar ik sluit niet uit dat ik later nog shows zal maken en spelen – ik heb nog plannen met Pyromantiek.”
Emma: “Ik heb culturele agogiek gestudeerd – heel frustrerend dat circus daar nooit aan bod kwam, maar dat is een ander verhaal. Na mijn studies kreeg ik de vraag van Bert & Fred om hun spreiding te doen. Ondertussen zijn daar Circus Katoen, Zinzi & Evertjan en Side-Show bijgekomen. Naast louter spreiding wil ik me ook focussen op zakelijke ondersteuning.”

Andreas: “We hebben alles in huis om iets gezamenlijks op te starten. Maar samen een voorstelling maken, daarvoor liggen onze artistieke visies te ver uiteen, denk ik.”
Quintijn: “We hebben nooit samen op het podium gestaan, maar we zijn wel altijd verbonden geweest. Ik heb jullie bij al mijn projecten geconsulteerd. Voor het plafondwandelen in Wonders, bijvoorbeeld, ben ik direct naar Andreas gestapt. Hij heeft mij altijd geholpen, en gepusht om zelf te knutselen. En met Emma is dat dan vooral praten over het circusveld, hè.”
Emma: “Soms tot vervelens toe, zeker op familiefeesten.”
Andreas: “Die denken dan: daar gaan we weer.”
Quintijn: “We overleggen heel veel.” (lacht)

Andreas: “Ik ben een grote nostalgicus als het op circus aankomt: rondtrekken met de tent, om de zoveel dagen op een ander plein wakker worden. Voor mij is circus iets volks. Het moet niet te artistiekerig of te veredeld worden. Ik hoop dat het ruwe circus op een gegeven moment niet verdwijnt.”
Quintijn: “Het een sluit het ander toch niet uit? Je moet niet concurrentieel denken, ‘als dit komt, kan dat er misschien niet meer bij.’ Een veel groter probleem is volgens mij het individualistische denken. Het collectieve verdwijnt. Daar maak ik mij zorgen over. Maar alleszins, het feit dat wij alle drie al zo lang in de circussector werken, geeft mij wel een heel goed en stevig gevoel.”
Emma: “Circus is ook echt ons ding, hè.”
Andreas: “Da’s de magie van het circus.”
