Stel. Een man woont op de tiende verdieping van een flatgebouw. Iedere dag neemt hij de lift naar beneden om naar buiten te gaan. Wanneer hij terugkeert, neemt hij de lift tot de zevende etage en gaat vervolgens met de trap naar zijn appartement op de tiende verdieping. Behalve op regenachtige dagen, dan neemt hij ook rechtstreeks de lift naar de tiende etage. De man haat lopen en voelt ook niet de nood om aan zijn conditie te werken. Hoe verklaar je dit?
Bovenstaand raadsel noopt tot een staaltje lateraal denken én dat is ook het uitgangspunt van LINEAR, de nieuwe voorstelling van TeaTime Company. Hannah Rogerson, Bavo De Smedt en Pieter Visser onderzoeken hierin de spanning tussen binnen de lijntjes of lineair denken, en het lateraal of out of the box denken aan de hand van één Chinese paal en 19 carbon staven. Trouwens, de oplossing van het raadsel is dit: de man is een dwerg met een paraplu. Hij geraakt niet aan de knopjes boven de 7. Op regenachtige dagen wel, want dan kan hij er met zijn paraplu aan.
Lateraal denken is een manier van problemen oplossen via creatieve redeneringen die niet meteen voor de hand liggend zijn. In het geval van ‘LINEAR’ is dat probleem de lijn zelf. Het deed TeaTime Company vragen stellen naar materiaal, techniek, het uniforme en het organische. Want als een paal in wezen een rechte is en het menselijke lichaam een verticale lijn hoe ga je dan van de lijn afwijken? “We staan er niet bij stil hoe gewoon we zijn om lineair te denken in ons dagelijks leven, reeds in begrippen als tijd en ruimte. En eigenlijk geldt dat ook voor de creatie van een voorstelling,” vindt Hannah. “Elke voorstelling moet een begin, midden en eind hebben. Een personage dient zich te ontwikkelen van punt A naar punt B. Dat is de structuur waarvan we weten dat ze werkt, maar wat als we die vaste paden verlaten en uit onze comfortzone treden? Wat als er geen begin en eind is, personages slechts abstracties zijn? Wat als we niet in lijnen maar in cirkels gaan denken?”
Tijdens het onderzoek ondervonden ze hoe sterk ze ook onderling verschillen in denken. Bavo, de pragmaticus die zoekt naar de meest logische oplossing en snel schift wat wel of niet te doen. Hannah, de kritische scheidslijn tussen droom en werkelijkheid en Pieter, de meest laterale denker van de drie. Bavo lacht. “Vaak zitten Hannah en ik over iets te discussiëren terwijl hij in een hoekje bizarre dingen uitprobeert. Dan zwijgen we, kijken verbaasd en zeggen: hé ja, laat ons dat eens doen!” “Soms kom ik via een omweg tot dezelfde conclusie, of ik volg hun denken en kom tot een andere conclusie,” vult Pieter aan. Hij slaagde er ooit zelfs in van 3+5=9 te maken tijdens een wiskundetoets. Hoewel een krak in wiskunde bleek hij alle vragen verkeerd beantwoord te hebben. “Bleek dat ik bij elke vraag, het nummer van de vraag had meegerekend in de som. Zodat vraag 1. 3+5 een 9 werd.”
Niet alleen TeaTime Company zelf denkt met ‘LINEAR’ out of the box, ook de toeschouwer wordt uitgedaagd zijn of haar gedachten de vrije loop te laten. “Ik zie veel te vaak voorstellingen die voor het publiek denken. Als je je triest moet voelen, wordt er een triest muziekje opgezet. Wij willen het publiek de totale vrijheid van interpretatie geven. Maar hoe laat je die vrijheid niet vrijblijvend zijn? Hoe vind je menselijkheid in de abstractie?” vraagt Hannah zich af.
Ze vertellen over hoe ze tijdens een voorstelling in Portugal een kasteel bezochten waar hun aandacht getrokken werd door een abstract schilderij en hoe wonderlijk het was hoe elk van hen daar zijn eigen verhaal bij maakte. Hannah vergelijkt ‘LINEAR’ met een kleurplaat waarvan zij de lijnen tekenen maar die elke toeschouwer anders gaat inkleuren. Hebben ze zelf tot de verbeelding sprekende namen voor bepaalde sequensen als ‘de meeuwen’ of ‘de ezel en de wortel’, een toeschouwer ziet er wellicht iets helemaal anders in. “Dat hebben we ook gemerkt bij de eerste toonmomenten. Een beweging die wij omschrijven als ‘de ijskegels’ noemde een toeschouwer ‘de vuurput’.”
“Hoe abstract een beeld ook is, je kan niet niet interpreteren,” vindt Pieter. “Zelfs zoiets abstract als een stok; zet een grote en een kleine stok naast elkaar en je gaat er eigenschappen aan verbinden, een verhaal bij verzinnen.”
“En dat is ook mooi, hoe we als mensen, als individuen de creativiteit van ons denken erop los laten,” vindt Hannah. “Momenteel ben ik volop verdiept in het boek ‘Homo deus’ waarin Harari een ontluisterend beeld schetst van onze toekomst waarin artificiële intelligentie de mens overbodig maakt. Waar de mens nog het onderscheid in kan maken, is in zijn creativiteit, zijn mogelijkheid tot onverwachtse zijsprongen en buiten de logische paden denken. Het maakt de kunstenaar tot misschien wel the last human standing in een wereld waarin de mensheid zal functioneren als een collectief orgaan geregeerd door algoritmes in plaats van een verzameling individuen met elk zijn krachten en gebreken.”
Een verzameling van individuen. Zo werkt ook de compagnie. Net als veel jonge theatergezelschappen zoals BOG en de NWE Tijd een andere invulling geven aan het begrip collectief, hoeft ook bij TeaTime Company niet alles samen gemaakt te worden. “We beschouwen het eerder als een collectie van werk, van ons drie gezamenlijk maar ook individueel. Zo is er naast hun debuut Stick-Stok ook ruimte voor eigen (solo)projecten. Zo werkt Pieter aan een solo met theater en jongleren met als thema ‘idealen’ geregisseerd door Eva van Boxtel. “TeaTime Company is een platform waar we elkaars ideeën ondersteunen en niet belemmeren.”
Elk zijn ze volleerd in uiteenlopende disciplines: de Ierse Hannah als danseres, Nederlander Pieter als jongleur en de Belgische Bavo met een expertise in Chinese mast. Ze leerden elkaar kennen aan de Fontys Hogeschool waar er reeds een sterke connectie is tussen de circus- en dansopleiding via een gedeeld lerarenkorps, open stages en toonmomenten. “Bavo en ik vonden elkaar in een gedeelde obsessie voor ‘Lord of The Rings’,” vertelt Hannah. “Pieter leerde ik kennen toen hij naar een voorstelling van mij kwam kijken waarin ik met schoenen jongleerde. Enfin, het was eigenlijk meer gooien. Toen beloofde hij me: ‘Als je echt wil jongleren, zal ik je het leren’, en hij heeft woord gehouden. Maar ook al kennen we elkaar van de opleiding, de afgelopen twee jaar sinds ons afstuderen is toch wel de echte leerschool geweest waarin we elkaar hebben leren kennen. Waren we in het begin nog erg zacht voor elkaar met kritiek, dan kan het nu al eens hard tegen hard gaan. We zijn de fase van de puppy love voorbij,” lacht Hannah.
Maar zoals dat hoort in duurzame relaties is er ook de geruststellende gedachte op elkaar te kunnen steunen. “De manier waarop we voor ‘LINEAR’ gans ons denkproces omgooien is zenuwslopend. Het stimuleert de creativiteit, maar beangstigt ook. We zijn amper twee jaar bezig, hebben nog maar één voorstelling samen gemaakt, van een oeuvre is nog geen sprake en we gooien het al radicaal over een andere boeg. Dan durft de angst voor de mislukking wel eens om de hoek loeren,” zegt Bavo. “Als jong nieuw gezelschap wordt er met argusogen naar je gekeken. Er is weinig plaats tot falen binnen het circus waar elk onderzoek een geslaagd resultaat moet opleveren. Hoe we ons beschermen tegen die belemmerende angst? TeaTime Therapy: veel babbelen en zo onszelf en ons zelfvertrouwen terugvinden. Ook onze outside eyes, Pia Meuthen, Foucauld Falguerolles en Darragh Mcloughlin, helpen hierbij.”
Vanwaar de naam van hun gezelschap? “Tea time is het pauzemoment waarop je achteroverleunt en reflecteert over wat was en komen kan. Een moment dat stemt tot nadenken en bezinning. Laat ons zeggen dat het dus meer refereert naar het Franse theemoment van Proust met de madeleine dan wel het Engelse theepartijtje van Alice in Wonderland,” zegt Hannah. “Het is ook niet zo dat we verstokte theeliefhebbers zijn,” lacht Pieter. “Geef mij maar liever een goede kop koffie. Helaas was ‘thecoffeecompany’ als domeinnaam al bezet.” Of hoe lateraal denken toch maar weer andere perspectieven opent.
Lateraal denken is gebaseerd op het opnieuw of anders ordenen van bestaande informatie om zodoende nieuwe informatie te laten ontstaan. De term lateraal denken werd geïntroduceerd door de Britse psycholoog Edward de Bono. Een probleem kent vaak een begin- en een eindsituatie. Het denkproces is het proces van het vinden van een weg van het begin naar de eindsituatie. Normaal is de mens geneigd om een zo recht mogelijke lijn te volgen van begin naar einde via gekende wegen. Als ergens in deze lijn een (schijnbare) onmogelijkheid zit, gooien veel mensen de hele oplossing weg om een nieuwe te zoeken. Iemand die lateraal denkt gaat verder op de ingeslagen weg met de gedachte ‘stel dat het wel mogelijk zou zijn’. Dit kan leiden tot geheel nieuwe inzichten. Het lateraal denken wordt vaak gebruikt tijdens brainstormsessies. De Bono ontwikkelde daartoe verschillende oefeningen. Vier voorbeelden om eens uit te proberen voor wie vastzit tijdens een creatieproces (en die wij al eens testten met TeaTime Company).
Negatief brainstormen
Formuleer je probleem als een vraag en keer dan de vraag om. Spiegel vervolgens deze oplossingen. Voorbeeld uit LINEAR: in de voorstelling zijn ijspegels die eruitzien als bedreigende speren. De vraag ‘hoe kunnen de artiesten die ontwijken’ wordt gespiegeld naar hoe kan je die net benutten. Dit toont zich duidelijk wanneer Bavo de mentale switch maakt van ontwijken van de ijspegel/staaf naar het gebruiken als hulpmiddel.
Biomimicry
Formuleer je probleem, denk aan dieren die met een gelijkaardig probleem geconfronteerd worden, onderzoek hoe ze dit oplossen en vertaal deze oplossing(en) nu terug naar het oorspronkelijke probleem. Voorbeeld uit LINEAR: Pieter zit vast aan een stok zoals een vlieg in een web. Hoe reageren vliegen wanneer ze vastzitten: eerst gaan ze helemaal loos in een reeks van snelle bewegingen in een poging zich los te rukken, daarna volgt het moment van overgave. TeaTime noemt deze beweging ‘Pieters verwikkeling’.
Het woordenboek
Kies een woord uit een (woorden)boek door pagina, regelnummer en plaats van woord op de regel aan te geven. Het woord dient een zelfstandig naamwoord te zijn. Koppel dit woord aan (oplossingen voor) je probleemstelling. Voorbeeld uit LINEAR: ‘water’. Om de abstractie menselijk te maken is er een soort gelaagde stilte, geluidsgolven die klinken als in- en uitademen.
De actieheld
Kies een actieheld en formuleer zijn of haar krachten/eigenschappen. Hoe zou hij of zij met het probleem omgaan? Maak de vertaalslag naar een oplossing voor het probleem. Voorbeeld uit LINEAR: Pieters stripheld is Deadpool. Deze stripheld doorbreekt de vierde wand vaak door zich rechtstreeks tot de lezer te richten. “Het zit vooralsnog niet in de show, maar misschien kan dit een oplossing zijn als we vast zitten in een bepaalde beweging.”
