“Hopelijk beschikt Circusmagazine over een goede verzekeringspolis.” Dat was wat ik dacht toen ze me voorstelden om deze reeks te schrijven. Ik bezoek een aantal circusateliers om er de meest unieke lessen uit te proberen. Want niet alleen de ledenaantallen van de circusateliers in Vlaanderen zitten in de lift, ook de diversiteit aan disciplines die je er kan leren en beoefenen breidt ieder jaar uit. Naast de reguliere multicircuslessen hebben heel wat circusscholen tegenwoordig een heel divers aanbod aan technieken. Wie weet ontdekt u zo bij het lezen van Circusmagazine de circusdiscipline die u op het lijf gegoten zit, of blijft u behoed van mogelijke kwetsuren.
Een tiental jaar geleden ging ik met Sarakasi, de circusschool waar ik me als tiener bij aansloot, zowat jaarlijks naar de voormalige Eenwielerconventie in Neerpelt. Ik herinner mij dat er naast het gebruikelijke eenwielerbaskettoernooi steeds de gelegenheid was om enkele ‘exotische’ circustechnieken uit te proberen. Zo kon ik er toen bij de lesgevers van Ell Circo D’ell Fuego onder meer proeven van german wheel en bascule. En ook op de Extreme Convention van laatstgenoemde circusschool kon je de meest spectaculaire specialisaties uittesten. Toen was dit nog eerder de uitzondering dan de regel, maar meer en meer circusscholen breken tegenwoordig hun aanbod open.
De eerste, ongewone discipline waar mijn oog op valt, is de module ‘Aerial Hoop’ die je bij Circusplaneet kan volgen. Bij de Gentse circusschool kan je als volwassene (18+) bij enkele wekelijkse lessen aansluiten, waaronder (partner)acrobatie, jongleren of luchtacrobatie. Daarnaast richt de school ook op regelmatige basis enkele kortere en meer specifieke modules in, variërend in aantal van een drie- tot zestal sessies. Begin dit schooljaar nam ik zo deel aan de module ‘Hoelahoep’. En uiteindelijk is aerial hoop toch een hoelahoep in de lucht, right?

Waar of wanneer de aerial hoop, ook wel lyra genoemd, haar intrede deed als circustechniek, is niet echt geweten. In de achttiende eeuw hingen er in ieder geval in menig achtertuin metalen hoepels als speeltuig voor kinderen. Vermoedelijk deed het van de achtertuin rechtstreeks zijn intrede in de circuspiste. De eerste keer dat er officieel sprake was van deze techniek, was toen een artiest met de naam ‘Cladeo’ in 1893 een krantenadvertentie plaatste als publiciteit voor zijn aerial hoop-performance.
Verder vind ik ook terug dat de aerial hoop aan het begin van de eenentwintigste eeuw bij het grote publiek aan bekendheid won nadat ze in enkele Cirque du Soleil-shows verscheen, waaronder Varekai en Quidam. Dat vind ik wel grappig: Quidam was immers de eerste circusvoorstelling die ik, na lang gejengel en gezeur, als cadeau voor mijn eerste communie met mijn ouders bezocht. Ik beeld me in hoe ik als klein meisje in wit jurkje al met open mond met aerial hoop kennismaakte.
Voor mijn empirisch onderzoek naar de aerial hoop sluit ik aan bij de laatste van drie extra lange, drie uur durende modulelessen. Deze lessen zijn bedoeld voor deelnemers die al een beetje ervaring hebben met luchtacrobatie, lees ik op de site van Circusplaneet, en worden gegeven door de Mexicaanse Carla Manrique, die in 2018 aan de Brusselse circushogeschool ESAC afstudeerde met aerial hoop als specialisatie. Zelf ben ik allesbehalve bedreven in luchtacrobatie. De keren dat ik een trapeze, Chinese mast of doek in klom, zijn op mijn beide handen te tellen, dus dit wordt in ieder geval een belevenis.

Op weg naar de circuszaal sta ik met mijn fiets aan een rood licht te wachten. Naast mij stopt toevallig een kennis, aan wie ik met groot enthousiasme vertel dat ik op weg ben naar Circusplaneet om de aerial hoop-les bij te wonen. Ik leg er meteen ook bij uit dat dat een hoepel in de lucht betreft, “een beetje gelijkend op een trapeze”. Hij kijkt me fronsend en een beetje wantrouwig aan, waarop hij vraagt hoe hoog zo’n hoepel doorgaans hangt. Pas dan dringt het besef door dat deze reeks wel degelijk voor gevorderden is, dat ze al enkele weken op deze discipline aan het trainen zijn. Ik word me gewaar van mijn eigen onkunde in acrobatie en luchtacrobatie in het bijzonder, die enigszins gepaard gaat met een lichte vorm van hoogtevrees. Lichtjes nerveus fiets ik verder.
Wanneer ik bij de circuszaal aan de Drongesesteenweg aankom – de kerk in Malem die Circusplaneet aankocht, wordt gerenoveerd – is de multicircusles voor kinderen nog aan de gang. Ik steek mijn hoofd even binnen in de zaal en merk dat op de achtergrond de vier hoepels al aan het plafond bevestigd zijn. Ze zweven tussen de een à anderhalve meter boven de grond, en zijn boven dikke crashmatten gepositioneerd. Mijn hoogtevrees zakt naar een iets lager peil.
In de kleedkamer van Circusplaneet tref ik een aantal pittige, sportief uitziende jongedames aan, die bij het omkleden hun blauwe plekken van de vorige week aan elkaar tonen. Een duidelijke waarschuwing lijkt me dit voor wat er mij te wachten staat. Ik neem als nieuwkomer polshoogte van hun luchtacrobatie-ervaring vooraleer ze aan deze module begonnen. Zo goed als alle deelnemers namen eerst deel aan andere luchtacrobatielessen, maar ik hoor dat aerial hoop voor hen een leuke afwisseling is met doek en trapeze.
Even later bevind ik me in een cirkel tussen een tiental moedige dames en één dappere jongeman. Carla vraagt ons bij aanvang van de opwarming om een partner te zoeken om elkaars ledematen los te masseren. Die blauwe plekken van zonet, “Was dat niet wat stoerdoenerij?” vraag ik me af. Als we tien minuten later aan de echte opwarming beginnen, besef ik dat wat we net deden nog maar een prelude was en de lerares me op het verkeerde been heeft gezet. De uptempo-oefeningen beginnen en na een half uur zweten vraag ik me af of dit zo drie uur lang doorgaat. Bij de stretchoefeningen gaan heel wat dames moeiteloos in een split zitten en ik bedenk dat ik toch weer wat yoga ga oefenen eenmaal de lente echt in het land is.

Eenmaal de opwarming voorbij is – ik sta al wat trillerig op mijn benen – beweegt de groep zich popelend richting de zwevende hoepels. De eerste oefeningen in de hoop zijn statische figuren, die Carla voor mij in vereenvoudigde vorm uitlegt. Mijn basiskennis trapeze zegt me dat je ongeveer op eenzelfde manier in de hoepel raakt: je hijst je met je armen aan de hoepel op, laat je hangen en werpt dan een been in de hoepel om je op te trekken. Door de stijve vorm van de hoepel voelt het wel enigszins anders aan. Ik probeer een aantal keer om in de hoepel te geraken en kijk hoe de andere deelnemers hun figuren oefenen. Vanop anderhalve meter hoogte voelt het een beetje aan als in het kleuterzwembad aan watergewenning doen, maar ik geniet ervan om naar de anderen te kijken.
Carla leert me nog een zijwaartse, statische figuur, waarbij ik door mijn been te klemmen een hand kan loslaten. Het lukt niet meteen, maar de derde keer slaag ik erin om enigszins aarzelend mijn hand te lossen. Geweldig.
Of er veel verschillen zijn met trapeze? Dat aerial hoop pijnlijker is, hoor ik hier en daar, door de harde, niet-buigzame vorm. Maar ook andere figuren zijn mogelijk. Ik zie een aantal dames tijdens de uitleg van Carla lustig aantekeningen maken in notitieboekjes, zoals geregeld gebeurt tijdens circuslessen. Ze noteren de namen van de figuren, “en als je echt slim bent,” vult iemand aan, “schrijf je de stappen er naartoe ook op.”
De les gaat verder met dynamische figuren in de hoepel. Dat circus niet voor watjes is, wist ik al langer dan vandaag, maar bij figuren met namen als de ‘nutcracker’ begin ik toch net iets harder te zweten. Ik probeer de figuren die Carla voor mij aanpast, maar sta geregeld leunend aan een turntoestel met open mond te kijken naar hoe soepel de andere deelnemers een rol in de hoepel maken. Het ziet er ontzettend sierlijk uit, en tegelijk vergt het wel wat armkracht om de tempo-oefeningen uit te voeren. Deze oefeningen zijn me – en nu komt een welgemikte woordspeling – iets te hoog gegrepen. Desondanks vind ik het fijn om op mijn ritme wat uit te proberen, maar ook om naar de geslaagde drops in de hoop van de andere deelnemers te kijken. Ze moedigen elkaar aan wanneer een erg moeilijke oefening bij een meisje ei zo na lukt, en applaudisseren voor elkaar bij elke goed gelukte poging.

Voor ik naar de aerial hoop-les vertrok, had ik het me als een les verbeeld waar geen enkele man zou zijn. De stereotypes stellen nu eenmaal dat meisjes geneigd zijn om voor trapeze en doek te kiezen, terwijl jongens eerder voor jongleren, eenwieleren of Chinese mast kiezen. Ik ben dan ook een beetje verbaasd wanneer er toch een dappere jongeman aanwezig blijkt te zijn. Meer nog: hij geeft zelfs luchtacrobatielessen bij Circusplaneet, en zegt dat hij eerder verbaasd was dat er zo weinig jongens intekenen voor luchtacrobatie. Hij overloopt de aantallen: één lesgroep heeft er drie, de twee andere geen enkele. Er wordt gegniffeld wanneer hij zich het volgende luidop afvraagt tijdens het stretchen: “Waar zitten al die mannen? Zijn ze gaan squashen?”
Ik kijk intussen wat pijnlijk naar mijn handpalmen waarop inmiddels de eerste blaren verschijnen. Of er eigenlijk al iemand echt geblesseerd is geraakt tijdens de lessen? De deelnemers lachen een beetje. “Nee, hoor. Spierpijn, blauwe plekken en blaren horen erbij. Maar echte blessures hebben we nog niet meegemaakt.”
Na een gezellige cool down neem ik afscheid van de groep. Op de fietstocht terug naar huis besluit ik dat aerial hoop een techniek is waarbij je leert om zowel kracht als flexibiliteit voor de dag te leggen. Ik heb ervan genoten, en denk terug aan de figuren die ik leerde en die stuk voor stuk als kleine overwinningen voelen.
Ik had besloten om op voorhand geen filmpjes te bekijken, om me zoveel mogelijk te laten verrassen door de beleving van de les zelf. Maar wanneer ik thuis kom, typ ik uit nieuwsgierigheid toch ‘aerial hoop’ in het zoekbalkje van YouTube. Ik stuit op enkele zeer mooie fragmenten uit voorstellingen. Ik vind ook: een bodybuilder die zich aan aerial hoop waagt en een compilatiefilmpje met allerlei manieren hoe het fout kan lopen. Vooraleer je enthousiasme de overhand neemt en je de hoepel van je zoon of dochter aan het plafond van je garage monteert, is het dus geen slecht idee om enkele van die erg fijne, extra lange modulelessen bij Circusplaneet te gaan volgen.
