Een redactielid van Circusmagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wondere wereld van het circus. Vandaag: nieuw redactielid Rinus Samyn.
Als technicus bij verschillende circusgezelschappen heb ik het toeren me eigen gemaakt. Het is iets wat ik goed kan. Met plezier vertrek ik en met evenveel plezier kom ik weer thuis. Wat een droomjob! Ik hoor bij de gelukkigste mensen ter wereld om dit te mogen doen.
Vaak ben ik alleen onderweg en toch ben ik niet eenzaam. Ik hou van het alleen-zijn. Ik heb mijn rituelen om van de zoveelste hotelkamer mijn thuis te maken. Het eerste wat ik altijd doe is op snoeiharde metal in mijn onderbroek op het bed springen.
Maar ‘s avonds na de voorstelling, wanneer ik in mijn hotelkamer beland en mij op datzelfde bed leg, lig ik vaker op de grens tussen alleen en eenzaam. Gelukkig heb ik dan mijn smartphone en connecteer ik met alles en iedereen. Ondergedompeld in sociale-mediaplatformen waar het om volgers gaat in plaats van vrienden. Wat zielloze data als vals gevoel van vriendschap en waar alles eindigt met een vind-ik-leuk. Zo geef ik routineus een duimpje aan iedere vriend die een foto plaatst van zijn pasgeborene. Als ik ze zoveel maanden later tegenkom, ben ik verrast dat ze een kinderwagen voortduwen. Die info had ik helemaal niet opgeslagen, laat staan dat ik de naam van die kleine onthouden had. Mijn taak als verre vriend was toen afgerond met op dat vrolijke knopje te duwen.
Als ik mijn beste vrienden zie, spreek ik met hen alsof die maandenlange stilte er nooit was. Gewoon de draad verder oppikken. Nooit zo’n slappe opener als ‘Ah, dat is lang geleden.’ Vriendschappen volledig los van censuur. Of met circassiens eens niet over circus praten. Heerlijk! Nog beter zijn de vriendschappen waar stilte tussen twee personen comfortabel aanvoelt.
Relaties worden aangetast, deels omdat het moeilijk wordt om relaties aan te gaan met mensen met een stabielere levensstijl. Je problemen en zorgen zijn radicaal verschillend dan die van andere mensen in je leven. Als je op tournee bent, weet je precies wat je doet en wat er van je verwacht wordt. Er is een routine. Het is tastbaar waar je voor staat, want het staat recht voor je. Maar dan kom je terug van tournee en denkt ‘Fucking hell, wat is het punt? Wat doe ik met mijn leven? Ik zou beter mijn leven opbouwen in plaats van elke keer diezelfde shows.’
De parallelle wereld van mijn vriendschappen is verstoord. Mijn vrienden die ik vaker wil zien, zie ik minder vaak. In ruil krijg ik dagelijks een lokale technische ploeg als nieuwe collega’s, die ik moet overhalen om voor eventjes mijn vrienden te zijn. Ik heb zo mijn vaste uitspraken, anekdotes en grappen. Na 10 jaar begint dat op mijn eigenste stand-up routine te gelijken.

Ik heb ervaren dat alleen-zijn één van de meest krachtige invloeden was om op het punt te komen waar ik nu sta, met wat ik nu doe, met het leven te leiden dat ik nu leef. Door een manier te vinden om van het alleen-zijn te genieten en het te omarmen, heb ik dingen gecreëerd en ervaringen opgedaan die ik anders nooit had gehad. Eenzaamheid is een gif, maar alleen-zijn is een katalysator. Het moeilijke is dat laatste in je leven te krijgen zonder jezelf onbedoeld te verdoven met dat eerste.
