Dat de circuswereld bulkt van de familiebanden, is een historisch feit dat vandaag nog steeds geldt. Circusmagazine zoekt boeiende bloedverwanten op en haalt ze voor de lens. In deze editie: Jan en Marth De Kinder.

Jan: “Marth struikelde vaak toen ze klein was. We dachten: die moet iets van beweging doen om wat minder slungelig te worden. In die periode – ze was toen zes – werd in Tienen net circusatelier Salto opgericht. Dat leek ons de perfecte oplossing; er was verder niet veel interessants te doen in onze streek én ik was zelf gefascineerd door circus. Ik weet niet meer precies waarom… waarschijnlijk door Circus Ronaldo. Maar zo is Marth dus in de circusschool beland.”
Marth: “In het begin waren we met 15 cursisten. Twee groepjes.”
Jan: “Op een gegeven moment werden er specialisatielessen ingericht, ook toegankelijk voor volwassenen. Ik was de enige volwassene. Maar zo heb ik wel leren eenwieleren en jongleren.”
Marth: “M’n beide zussen hebben ook eventjes circus gedaan. Dan gingen we met z’n vieren naar de Eenwielerconventie…”
Jan: “… en reden we samen op onze eenwieler door het dorp.”
Marth: “En ik ben in het circus blijven plakken. Maar het grappige is dat de reden waarom ik als kind zo vaak struikelde, gewoon was omdat ik een bril nodig had.”

Marth: “Je hebt me altijd meegenomen naar voorstellingen. We gingen samen naar festivals als Theater op de Markt en Chassepierre.”
Jan: “Nog voor ik zelf circus leerde, was ik al gefascineerd door mensen die in beweging zijn. De manier waarop circusartiesten in de piste bewegen, die beeldtaal, dat is erg inspirerend voor mijn werk als illustrator.”
Marth: “Circus sloop geleidelijk aan in je werk. Je personages werden ook geïnspireerd op circusartiesten – ik weet nog dat we naar Hopla Circus gingen kijken en dat jij daar echt karakters hebt uitgehaald voor een boek.”
Jan: “Ook hoe het publiek reageert, vind ik boeiend. Tijdens sommige voorstellingen trok ik vooral foto’s van de toeschouwers.”

Marth: “Het was geen evidente keuze om voor de circushogeschool te gaan. Ik wilde zoveel dingen doen. Maar ik had iets van: ik wil dat geprobeerd hebben. En mijn ouders steunden mij – daar ben ik heel blij mee. Ik ken genoeg mensen bij wie dat niet het geval was.”
Jan: “We zeiden haar dat ze niet voor de gemakkelijkste weg koos, maar dat we hoe dan ook achter haar stonden.”
Marth: “Ik heb veel geleerd op ACaPA – met stress omgaan bijvoorbeeld – maar de echte eye-opener was toch de stage die ik deed bij The Darling Collection in Zuid-Afrika. Het was een sociaal-artistiek project waarbij verschillende jonge artiesten in gesprek gingen met de bewoners van een dorp en op basis daarvan een voorstelling maakten. Dat was een geweldige ervaring. Daar besefte ik dat ik met mensen en hun verhalen wilde werken.”
Jan: “Je bent een verhalenverteller, net als ik.”

Jan: “Momenteel werken we samen aan een voorstelling.”
Marth: “We zitten nog in de onderzoeksfase, zijn verschillende sporen aan het testen. Hoe kunnen we illustratie en circus samenbrengen? Hoe kunnen we elkaar daarin versterken? Maar we zijn ook aan het schrijven: verhalen die we samen of apart hebben meegemaakt, dingen die we hebben gedaan.”
Jan: “Eén piste is het concept ‘ondersteboven’. Visueel is dat gelinkt aan circus, maar inhoudelijk eerder aan verdriet. Wanneer Marth vroeger thuiskwam na een zware week, ging ze letterlijk ondersteboven in de zetel zitten. Het is een krachtig beeld.”
Marth: “En hoe mensen op dat beeld reageren, is heel verschillend.”
Jan: “De clou is wellicht dat je het mag laten gebeuren. In het verhaal dat ik aan het schrijven ben, staat een olifant ondersteboven. Een ander dier doet er alles aan om hem weer ‘normaal’ te krijgen, maar niets lukt. Pas als het dier beslist om zelf ook ondersteboven te staan, is het oké. De olifant merkt dat hij niet alleen staat en dat hij mag zijn hoe hij is. Misschien zit daar het geheim: gewoon wederzijds gezien en aanvaard worden, zonder dat er iets ‘opgelost’ moet worden.”
