“Wie neemt het op tegen de sterkste man van het land?” Ooit was het bokskraam een vast onderdeel van elke foor, tegenwoordig moet je op zoek naar Compagnie Charlie om dit straatspektakel mee te maken. De doldwazen van de rondtrekkende familie Pas͑tek, afkomstig uit (het fictieve) Berkhistan, binden keer op keer de strijd aan met ‘le rire qui unit’ als inzet.
Hun alter-ego’s, Johannes Vanbinnebeek (34) en Maxime Membrive (36), hebben elkaar ontmoet tijdens hun opleidingsjaren fysiek theater aan de Kleine Academie in Brussel. Maxime was toen al gefascineerd door het boksen en de mogelijkheden die het bood voor scenografie. Tegelijkertijd had Johannes al een behoorlijk archief aan films van oude komische goden in zijn hoofd opgeslagen. Een vriendschap later werd Compagnie Charlie geboren. Kers op de taart was de toevoeging van Johan Dils (52), opgeklommen van extern adviseur tot coach en medespeler in de voorstelling Peek-a-Boo!.
Leuk weetje over die naam: ‘Peek-a-boo’ is niet alleen wat Engelstalige ouders spelen met hun nieuwgeborene, het is ook een bokstechniek, geperfectioneerd door zwaargewicht Mike Tyson. Hij verbergt zich achter zijn handschoenen maar in plaats van ‘kiekeboe’ te roepen, volgt er een dreun die je alle sterren en planeten laat zien. Dat zet de toon voor de komische en acrobatische voorstelling van Compagnie Charlie, maar dankzij de kunst van slapstick slagen de boksers in deze ring erin elkaar pampus te slaan zonder elkaar echt pijn te doen. Daar gaan we met plezier dieper op in, maar eerst, omdat het interview plaatsheeft op een schandalig warme dag in het midden van de gevreesde code rood, een brandend actuele vraag:
Hoe houden jullie het vol in deze hitte?
Johan Dils: “We hebben onszelf een sterke discipline opgelegd. We speelden gisteren op het Royal Festival de Spa, dat normaal gezien geen straattheater programmeert, maar nu ‘dankzij’ Covid-19 wel. We hebben de voorbije dagen gerepeteerd om ons de voorstelling terug eigen te maken. We stonden elke dag om zes uur op om te repeteren vanaf half zeven, in blokken van anderhalf uur. Tijdens de warmste uren van de dag hielden we een siësta en in de avond hernamen we de repetitie, om dan direct naar bed te gaan.”
Johannes Vanbinnebeek: “Als we dan moeten optreden op zo’n warme dag, zoals gisteren, bekijken we samen met de organisatie waar we best ons podium zetten. In het beste geval staan zowel wij als het publiek in de schaduw.”
Heb je ooit al overwogen om niet te spelen in zulke extreme omstandigheden?
Vanbinnebeek: “Tot nu toe hebben we alleen bij regenweer al eens voorstellingen moeten annuleren, want dat is gewoon niet veilig voor ons. Bij hitte is dat nog niet gebeurd, al moet ik zeggen dat het fysiek dan erg zwaar is voor mij. Ik heb één keer een zonneslag opgelopen tijdens een optreden in Duitsland, een aantal jaar geleden.”
Maxime Membrive: “Toen was Johan nog niet bij ons aangesloten en stonden we de hele voorstelling op scène. Dankzij hem hebben we nu alle drie een paar momentjes om kort te verdwijnen, te drinken of water over ons heen te gieten. We voorzien ook verfrissing voor het publiek. Als zij de warmte willen trotseren voor ons, willen wij spelen voor hen.”
De andere grote uitdaging van het moment heet corona. Heeft dat een grote invloed gehad op jullie show?
Dils: “We hebben ons eerst de vraag gesteld of we de voorstelling wel kunnen/willen aanpassen. Maar nu we de kans kregen om te spelen, hebben we die toch gegrepen. Veel andere gezelschappen krijgen die kans niet. We hebben een hele reeks aanpassingen doorgevoerd om de maatregelen rond social distancing te kunnen respecteren. Gisteren hebben we die voor het eerst voor publiek getest. De eerste reacties zijn positief.”
Kan je een voorbeeld geven van een aanpassing?
Dils: “Normaal gezien werken we veel met mensen uit het publiek. We gaan zelf in het publiek staan of halen vrijwilligers op het podium. Dat is allemaal niet meer mogelijk. De scène met de circusbeer hebben we daardoor moeten omgooien. Op een gegeven moment verschijnt er een beer, gespeeld door Johannes, op het toneel. Hij heeft interactie met een kindje uit het publiek, gaat er het gevecht mee aan en ontvoert het uiteindelijk door het over zijn schouder weg te dragen. We hebben er in de plaats een muzikaal stukje van gemaakt, waarin Maxime accordeon speelt en de beer begeleidt op klokjes. Dat is op zich mooi, maar door deze intieme scène in het verhaal in te passen, is de opbouw naar de volgende scène, die zeer energetisch is, weggevallen. Dat voelt nog niet goed, daar gaan we nog aan sleutelen.”
Membrive: “Verder zorgen we ervoor dat onze personages niet boven de regels staan…”
Vanbinnebeek: “… en er al zeker geen commentaar op leveren.”
Membrive: “Toen we gisteren speelden, moest ik wennen aan al die mondmaskers. De enige manier om nog een relatie op te bouwen met het publiek is via de ogen. We hebben meer dan anders moeten geven – toujours donner, donner, donner – maar hebben ook ontzettend veel teruggekregen. Ik heb opnieuw ondervonden hoe belangrijk het is dat we in deze tijden cultuur op straat brengen, toegankelijk voor iedereen.”
Hebben jullie grote schade ondervonden tijdens de lockdown?
Vanbinnebeek: “Normaal gezien begint ons seizoen in april, nu is het pas begin augustus stilaan op gang gekomen.”
Dils: “Daardoor hebben we het promotiefestival Chalon dans la rue gemist, en dus heel wat andere potentiële speelkansen in Frankrijk misgelopen, ook voor volgend seizoen. Eigenlijk hebben we Frankrijk nodig om Peek-a-Boo! te kunnen voortzetten.”
Hoe staan jullie tegenover de compensaties en de aanpak van Vlaanderen?
Membrive: “Tot nu toe lijken we als compagnie geen recht te hebben op compensaties. Dat zou te maken hebben met de aard van onze contracten. Op individueel niveau zijn we nog aan het onderzoeken hoe we ondersteuning kunnen krijgen. Het is tamelijk absurd, gezien er voor Johan als Vlaming, Johannes als Brusselaar en mezelf als Waal andere regels gelden, terwijl we samen in dezelfde Belgische compagnie zitten!”
Vanbinnebeek: “Ik moet bekennen dat het uitpluizen van die materie niet mijn sterkste kant is.”
Dils: “We hebben gelukkig het artiestenstatuut, zeer belangrijk in deze tijden. En we hebben voor onze nieuwe voorstelling Rakanyak ook een subsidie vanuit het Circusdecreet gekregen. We hebben dus uitzicht op nieuw werk.”
Vanbinnebeek: “We hebben zogezegd dus nog geluk gehad, maar ieder van ons kent wel meerdere artiesten die echt zwaar afzien op dit moment.”
Wat kan je al prijsgeven over de nieuwe creatie?
Dils: “De nieuwe voorstelling begint waar de huidige net eindigt. We gaan dus verder met de personages Boğa en Galli Pas͑tek van Peek-a-Boo!, de twee bokserbroers uit Berkhistan die met hun oom Patasj rondtrekken door Europa.”
Vanbinnebeek: “We hebben ondertussen een hele mythologie ontwikkeld over onze personages. Zo situeren we Berkhistan ergens tussen Rusland en Turkmenistan, waar de rest van de familie is achtergebleven. We hebben achterliggende verhalen verzonnen om de band tussen de personages op scène te verklaren. Bovendien spreken we niet enkel ‘Berkti’ tijdens de voorstelling, maar ook ervoor en erna. Elke opvoering bedenken we nieuwe woorden in deze taal.” (zie kaderstuk onderaan)
Dils: “Daarvoor laten we ons lichtjes inspireren door het Turks, Albanees, Armeens en Esperanto. ‘Boğa’ betekent bijvoorbeeld ‘stier’ in het Turks. Dat zegt iets over zijn karakter. Er staat ook een stier op zijn tenue.”
Op jullie website staat een bonte lijst oude filmsterren die jullie manier van spelen hebben beïnvloed, te noemen Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Laurel en Hardy, The Marx Brothers, Jacques Tati, The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, Tommy Cooper, Rowan Atkinson en de bende van Monty Python. Hoeveel uren hebben jullie achter een scherm doorgebracht?
Vanbinnebeek: (lacht) “Onze gedeelde liefde voor oude films is de drijfveer voor de compagnie. Hoewel we alle drie al veel gezien hebben, zetten we ook nu nog af en toe een film op na een werkdag. Het zijn inderdaad zeer uiteenlopende artiesten, maar ze doen ons allemaal lachen. We praten vaak over bepaalde gags die we hebben gezien en komen ook geregeld nog op nieuwe gags in dezelfde stijl. Zo blijft er een continue achtergrond van oude films in ons werk aanwezig.”
Membrive: “Verder bekeken we compilatiefilmpjes met accidenten, valpartijen en mislukte stunts uit het echte leven, als tijdens de creatie onze energie laag was. Door ons daar een halfuurtje op te concentreren, werden onze uitgedoofde geesten gereactiveerd.”
Hebben jullie een persoonlijke favoriet uit het lijstje?
Vanbinnebeek: “Voor mij is dat Chaplin. Dat was al zo voor de compagnie begon. Zoals iedereen kende ik het figuurtje al lang, en op een bepaald moment heb ik één film gekocht en bekeken. De andere volgden snel. Het geeft me enorm veel plezier. Eén geslaagde gag van hem kan mijn dag goedmaken. Zijn persoonlijke stijl, waarin hij humor en emotie verbindt, spreekt mij erg aan. Als vakman is hij mijn grote voorbeeld.”
Jullie affiche, met de twee boksers die elkaar omhelzen, moet wel een knipoog zijn naar de fameuze bokswedstrijd van Chaplin uit City Lights.
Vanbinnebeek: “Inderdaad. Zulke verwijzingen zijn soms bewust, zoals een muziekje of een gag die van Chaplin komt, tot zelfs de naam van onze compagnie, en soms sluipt het er ongemerkt in. Het is nu eenmaal een deel van ons collectief geheugen. Chaplin was trouwens niet de enige die de bokswedstrijd als setting heeft gebruikt voor slapstick, veel van de oude meesters hebben dat gegeven uitgewerkt. Het was hun gedeeld repertoire. Wij verwijzen vaak naar hun gags, maar zorgen er wel voor dat we niet klakkeloos imiteren, ons eigen materiaal ontwikkelen en onze eigenheid behouden.”
Jouw favoriet, Maxime?
Membrive: “Buster Keaton. Ik ben onder de indruk van het atletische aspect van zijn werk, heel visueel en goed in scène gezet, waarbij ook het decor van groot belang is. Zijn gezichtsuitdrukking is beperkt maar zijn lichamelijke expressie des te groter. De manier waarop zijn personage altijd opnieuw moeilijke situaties doorstaat raakt me sterk.”
Dils: “Ik heb vooral via Johannes en Maxime veel komieken ontdekt. Wat mij altijd aangrijpt bij zowel Chaplin als Keaton is de menselijkheid van hun verhalen. Dat zie je ook sterk bij Laurel en Hardy, omdat hun onderlinge relatie meestal belangrijker is dan wat hen overkomt. Daar zit veel poëzie in.”
Hoever reikt de invloed van stille films op jullie werk?
Dils: “Wat we onder meer hebben geleerd van de stille film is de focus van de camera. We hebben zelf geregeld stukken van onze repetitie gefilmd om te ontdekken waar de kijker precies naar kijkt. De ene keer is dat een beweging, de andere keer een attribuut of een personage. Door dat te weten te komen hebben we ons spel daarop kunnen afstemmen.”
Membrive: “We zijn begonnen met materiaal te ontwikkelen alsof het voor film bedoeld was. Naderhand hebben we de nodige aanpassingen gemaakt om het voor straattheater geschikt te maken. Zo willen we bijvoorbeeld geen geweld prediken, hoewel we boksen. Als je op straat een bokswedstrijd van een film naspeelt, komt het al snel gewelddadig over. Film lijkt op dat vlak meer te verdragen. Dat hebben we moeten aanpassen.”
Vanbinnebeek: “Zeker omdat we voor alle leeftijden spelen, waken we erover dat we enkel komisch geweld gebruiken, zonder aan kinderen de boodschap mee te geven dat ze dit thuis mogen nadoen. Kinderen begrijpen dat snel, maar volwassenen durven al eens een wenkbrauw fronsen.”
Dils: “De personages zijn ondanks het geweld eigenlijk erg zorgzaam voor elkaar.”
In de tijd van Chaplin en Keaton was slapstick populair bij jong en oud. Nu is er concurrentie van stand-upcomedy, parodie, zwarte humor en noem maar op. Hoe komt het dat drie jonge mensen van nu toch de keuze voor slapstick maken? Vanwaar de liefde?
Membrive: “We wisten dat we fysiek theater met komedie wilden combineren, maar ik kende het woord ‘slapstick’ niet toen Johannes ermee afkwam. Bij het herbekijken van veel films bleek dat ik er ook heel hard om moest lachen. Voor ons was dat dan ook het eerste criterium bij het ontwikkelen van materiaal, dat we er zelf mee konden lachen. Slapstick loopt als een rode draad door ons werk en bepaalt onze identiteit, hoewel het een erg moeilijke techniek is.”
Vanbinnebeek: “Toch willen we meer brengen dan enkel gags. Er gaat veel aandacht naar het universum van de personages.”
Dils: “Slapstick is erg menselijk. Iedereen is mee met die verhalen, iedereen herkent het. Deze vorm van humor maakt geen onderscheid tussen arm en rijk, jong of oud of nationaliteiten. Iedereen weet hoe het is om klappen te incasseren. Dat onze personages letterlijk klappen krijgen, maar altijd terug rechtstaan, geeft een bepaalde energie aan onze voorstelling. We hebben al gehoord van mensen dat ze voor die energie telkens terugkwamen.”
Vanbinnebeek: “Toen we in Berlijn op de Alexanderplatz speelden, kwamen er telkens veel daklozen en dronkaards kijken. Die hebben elke voorstelling gezien en kwamen ons achteraf bedanken met knuffels.”
Heb je al meegemaakt dat toeschouwers of zelfs collega’s op je werk neerkijken?
Membrive: “Tot nu toe eerder het tegenovergestelde. Veel collega’s vinden het juist heel tof dat we ons zo op slapstick toespitsen.”
Vanbinnebeek: “Altijd als het daarover gaat, moet ik denken aan een filmpje van Dick Van Dyke (Amerikaanse komiek, bekend van Mary Poppins, red.), waarin hij het verschil benoemt tussen high comedy en low comedy, waar slapstick toe behoort. Hij legt uit waarom slapstick achterhaald is en niet meer grappig, maar tegelijkertijd overkomt hem het ene accident na het andere. Het is een hilarische uiteenzetting die bewijst dat slapstick niet alleen universeel is, maar er ook altijd al is geweest.”
In het promotekstje staat ook ‘een voorstelling met een lach en een traan’. De lach ontlokken is voor jullie vast klein bier, de traan lijkt me veel moeilijker. Hoeveel tranen staan er al op jullie erelijstje?
Dils: (lacht) “Als mensen ons komen aanspreken na een opvoering en zich nog altijd in het universum van de personages wanen, is dat voor mij het bewijs dat ze niet alleen goed gelachen hebben, maar ook in zekere mate geraakt zijn. Er zitten poëtische momenten in onze voorstelling, zo verwijzen de boksers al eens naar hun familie in Berkhistan, in het bijzonder naar hun moeder.”
Vanbinnebeek: “Via de lach krijg je sympathie voor de personages, maar als Maxime dan een liefdeslied op zijn accordeon speelt, ontstaat er toch een diepere connectie. Op dat moment bevind ik mij achter een paravent, dus kan ik het publiek niet zien, maar ik hoor meestal een zucht van ontroering.”
