U kent Neta Oren als de enige vrouwelijke circusartiest uit ‘All the fun’ van Cie Ea Eo. Maar de 26-jarige Israëlische uit Brussel werkt ook aan een eigen jongleervoorstelling.

Ik ontmoet Neta op een terras in het centrum van Brussel, de stad waar ze enkele jaren geleden is neergestreken. ‘Brussels is a city of moving,’ vertelt ze. ‘Verschillende mensen die ik hier heb leren kennen zijn al naar elders verhuisd. Zelf weet ik ook niet hoe lang ik hier blijf wonen, al heb ik het hier erg naar mijn zin. Maar veel thuis ben ik niet: ik ben altijd onderweg. Daarom is Brussel een ideale uitvalsbasis. Van hieruit sta je zo overal ter wereld.’
Ze is in Brussel komen wonen nadat Eric Longequel van Cie Ea Eo haar een dikke twee jaar terug opbelde. Neta zat op dat moment nog op de circusschool in Toulouse. Ze dacht dat Eric, die al eerder jongleerlessen gaf aan LIDO, haar belde om even iets te gaan drinken in de stad. Maar het telefoontje bleek serieuzer. ‘Eric vroeg me of ik wilde meestappen in de nieuwe creatie van Cie Ea Eo. Ik zei meteen ja. Op één minuut was alles gefikst.’ (lacht)
Samen creëren met Cie Ea Eo was dan ook een meisjesdroom die uitkwam. ‘Ik was vijftien toen ik Bram Dobbelaere en Sander De Cuyper, alias Pol & Freddy, zag optreden op de Jongleerconventie in Israël. Dat was met ‘Ready’, die voorstelling met hun kleine autootje. Meteen wist ik: dit wil ik later ook!’
Een jaar eerder leerde Neta op diezelfde conventie ook Collectif Petit Travers kennen. Dat Franse jongleergezelschap deed haar inzien dat circus meer was dan techniek alleen en dat het ook theatraal kon zijn. Dankzij Petit Travers belandde Neta, na twee jaar école préparatoire in Lyon, in het befaamde LIDO in Toulouse, dat bekend staat als een van de beste circusscholen voor jongleurs. En nu, enkele jaren later, werkt ze aan een nieuw, vijftien minuten durend jongleerduet bij Petit Travers. Alweer een droom die is uitgekomen, dus.
Heimwee
Een andere keuze dan naar het buitenland verhuizen om carrière te maken, had Neta niet. ‘In Israël was er acht jaar terug nog geen professionele circusschool. Ondertussen is er wel eentje in Tel Aviv. Maar circus is niet echt populair in Israël. Het is erg klassiek en wordt er toch vooral geassocieerd met optredens op feestjes, zoals verjaardagen. Naar circustheater gaan Israëli’s dan ook niet makkelijk, al beginnen er nu toch meer straatfestivals te komen.’
Optreden met ‘All the fun’ in Israël, op diezelfde jongleerconventie waar ze tien jaar terug Bram en Sander ontdekte, was voor Neta dan ook een emotioneel moment. In de zaal zaten haar ouders en jeugdvrienden. ‘Als jong meisje van achttien wou ik vooral mijn dromen najagen en in Europa gaan studeren. Mijn ouders hebben mij hier altijd in gesteund. Ze konden ook niet anders natuurlijk, aangezien mijn oudere zus beeldend kunstenares is geworden en mijn oudere broer fotograaf.’ (lacht) Maar met de jaren neemt de heimwee naar haar familie en Israël toe. ‘Hoe ouder ik word, hoe meer heimwee ik krijg. Ik besef dat ik heel wat mis, zoals de kinderen van mijn broer die ik nu niet kan zien opgroeien.’
Of ze ooit terugkeert naar Israël weet Neta nog niet. ‘Er is daar momenteel geen werk voor mij, vrees ik. Alle circusartiesten die ik er ken, moeten hun kunst combineren met bijbaantjes in de horeca. Ik kan nog altijd niet geloven dat ik hier in Europa voltijds van circus kan leven. Hopelijk blijft dat nog een hele tijd zo.’ Een uitgestippeld plan heeft Neta niet. ‘Mijn toekomst is nog wat blurry. Ik durf niet te veel te denken hoe die eruit gaat zien, want dan krijg ik a little heart attack.’ (lacht)
Jongleerhuwelijk
Maar voorlopig gaat het Neta allemaal voor de wind. Samen met Gonzalo Fernandez, een jongleur die ze leerde kennen aan het LIDO, en drummer Gaëtan Allard vormt ze het gezelschap Stoptoï en werkt ze aan haar eerste eigen productie: ‘Loop’. Daarin gaan ze een huwelijk aan van hun twee specialiteiten: Neta jongleert met ballen, Gonzalo met ringen. ‘Het is een superboeiend, maar moeilijk proces. We experimenteren momenteel volop hoe we beide technieken kunnen combineren. Zo hebben we al manieren gevonden om te jongleren met de ballen door de ringen heen, of om met mijn lichaam door de ringen te springen.’
Dat laatste is mogelijk door de nieuwe constructies die Gonzalo maakt van de ringen: hij buigt ze, zodat ze klem komen te zitten en vouwt ze vervolgens in elkaar. En hop: er verschijnen nieuwe grote kringen en slingers van ringen, die zo weer uit elkaar kunnen ‘floepen’. (Neta toont me enkele foto’s op haar smartphone, het ziet er alvast erg fascinerend uit.)
Al van jongs af aan wist Neta heel precies dat ze wilde jongleren, meer bepaald met ballen. ‘Bij kegels leg je toch meteen een associatie met circus, terwijl ballen veel meer alledaagse voorwerpen zijn en je er dus veel meer vrijheid mee hebt.’ Neta ontwikkelde zich tot een echte specialiste in het vak. ‘Wanneer ik nu naar een jongleervoorstelling kijk, zie ik meteen aan de manier waarop de jongleurs de ballen, kegels of ringen aanraken, hoeveel ervaring ze hebben met jongleren. Daarom kan ik niet zomaar met kegels of ringen jongleren: het is echt een andere techniek dan met ballen.’
Writing circus
Zelf houdt Neta het liefst van ‘writing circus’. Daarmee bedoelt ze: niet per se het uitvinden van nieuwe trucs, maar wel: ‘putting the tricks together’. ‘Onderzoeken hoe je met crescendo of repetitiviteit bewegingsfrasen kan maken, dat soort dingen. In ‘All the fun’ zit bijvoorbeeld een routine waar ik erg trots op ben. We schudden allemaal met onze hoofden van links naar rechts en ondertussen moeten we blijven jongleren, waarbij we de balletjes dus niet zien. Het vergde heel veel tijd om die routine onder de knie te krijgen, maar ik ben erg blij dat we daarin geslaagd zijn.’
Waar haar aandeel juist zit in de voorstelling, vindt ze dan weer moeilijk te zeggen. ‘Ik kan er moeilijk de vinger op leggen. Als je een half jaar non-stop werkt aan een nieuwe creatie lopen alle ideeën door elkaar. Ik heb alleszins ontzettend veel geleerd van de gasten van Ea Eo. Want vergeet niet: een voorstelling creëren, dat was helemaal nieuw voor mij. Ik zat nog op het LIDO toen de eerste repetitieweken van ‘All the fun’ plaatsvonden. Ik leerde vooral dat ik niet zoveel moet twijfelen en dat alle puzzelstukjes wel in elkaar zullen vallen. Je moet niet te vroeg alles willen vastleggen. Al moet ik ook zeggen: we waren maar erg nipt klaar voor de première op PERPLX. Kostuums en licht kwamen er pas op het allerlaatste moment bij. Een voorstelling moet ook groeien: na een keer of twintig te spelen had ik pas het gevoel dat ‘All the fun’ er helemaal stond en dat we de finale versie gevonden hadden. Maar ik ben er zeker supertrots op.’
Vrouw
Als enige vrouw tussen vier andere mannen, die elkaar bovendien ook al lang kennen, moest Neta waarschijnlijk aardig haar mannetje staan bij Ea Eo. Of niet? ‘In het begin was het zeker even zoeken, maar dat heeft niets te maken met het feit dat ik een vrouw ben. Juggling is not a gender thing at all. Je hebt er geen grote kracht of lenigheid voor nodig. Mannen en vrouwen kunnen even goed jongleren. Minder dan in acrobatie is er een onevenwicht tussen de rollen die mannen en vrouwen aannemen.’
Nochtans was Neta de enige vrouwelijke jongleur in haar klas aan het LIDO. ‘Geen idee hoe het komt dat er zo weinig vrouwen jongleren. Ik zat tijdens mijn opleiding in een project samen met vijf mannen. Uiteindelijk kon ik niet meer meedoen en dus gingen we samen op zoek naar vrouwelijke jongleurs die me zouden kunnen vervangen. Na lang nadenken, kwamen we niet verder dan drie namen!’
Dat ze een vrouwelijk knelpuntberoep uitoefent, heeft haar ongetwijfeld al extra werk opgeleverd, lacht ze. ‘Maar tegelijk wil ik niet dat men mij vraagt omdat ik een vrouw ben, maar omdat ik een goede artieste ben!’ Als ik vraag wie haar vrouwelijke circusidool is, moet ze niet lang twijfelen. ‘Juliette Hulot van Petit Travers. Binnenkort ga ik met haar samenwerken. Ik kan het zelf amper geloven, maar zij is nog maar de eerste vrouw met wie ik samen in een circusproject zal spelen!’
Ik aarzel een beetje, maar stel haar toch dé clichévraag bij uitstek (die mannen nooit moeten beantwoorden). Denkt Neta aan kinderen? En zo ja, ziet ze daarna nog een carrière voor zichzelf weggelegd in het circus? ‘Goeie vraag. Eerst dacht ik: ik werk keihard tot ik 39,99 jaar oud ben en pas daarna begin ik aan kinderen. Maar nu ben ik van gedacht veranderd. Overal rondom mij zie ik vrouwelijke circusartiesten met kinderen. Ik denk dat beide dus zeker verenigbaar zijn!’ (lacht)
