Steeds vaker zie je circus niet alleen op festivals, maar ook in cultuurcentra groot en klein. Nochtans is dat niet altijd evident: circusartiesten zijn minder bekend, het publiek heeft soms foute verwachtingen van circus en ook de financiële en technische eisen liggen hoog. Tijd voor een gesprek over de innige, maar woelige relatie tussen circus en cultuurcentra met vijf programmatoren die met veel liefde en geduld trekken aan de circuskar.
Deze keer nodigden we geen programmatoren uit van cultuurcentra zoals De Grote Post in Oostende, De Spil in Roeselare, De Warande in Turnhout of De Werf in Aalst – plekken die al jaren bekend staan om hun hoogstaande, breed gedragen circusprogrammatie. We contacteerden net middelgrote en kleinere cultuurcentra die, wat meer in de luwte, ook circus aan de man proberen te brengen in hun stad of gemeente. Hoe maken zij artistieke keuzes en werven zij hun publiek? Welke drempels ervaren zij in hun circuswerking? En waar dromen zij nog van op circusvlak?
Vijf programmatoren waren aanwezig op onze rondetafel in Brussel. Drie van hen tonen dit seizoen elk vijf circusproducties. Roel Tulleneers presenteert in De Werft in Geel mentalist Tim Oelbrandt met Heen & terug, het geweldige The artist van mimer Thom Monckton en Circo Aereo, jongerenproject Softies van fABULEUS en Hanna Mampuys, de topacrobaten van Akoreacro met Dans ton coeur en circuscabaretière Zoe Bizoe. Lies Van Lierde van CC Westrand uit Dilbeek koos voor Red Haired Men van Alexander Vantournhout, Carrying my father van There There Company, het filmproject Cinema Malfait van Circus Ronaldo en Gust Van den Berghe, familiecircus Murmur van Grensgeval en de internationale klepper A simple space van het Australische Gravity & Other Myths. Linda Janssen van CC Palethe uit Pelt (de fusie tussen Overpelt en Neerpelt – die laatste deelgemeente kent u uiteraard van Theater op de Markt, het grootste Vlaamse circusfestival) heeft naast There There ook nog Common Ground, een triple bill, 100% Circus en Ronaldo-klassieker La cucina dell’arte op de affiche.
In vergelijking met hen zet Martijn Gunst van CC De Ploter minder in op circus: enkel There There is te zien in Ternat. Ben Schokkaert uit Ninove is een buitenbeentje: hij werkt niet voor lokaal cultuurcentrum De Plomblom, maar programmeert vanuit de stad De Donderdagen, tien wekelijkse festivalavonden in de zomermaanden met gratis circus en straattheater.
Ik ben benieuwd: hoe maken zij hun artistieke keuzes? “Kwaliteit en toegankelijkheid zijn voor mij erg belangrijk,” steekt Ben uit Ninove van wal. “Ik kies liever geen te experimentele producties. Ze moeten passen bij het format van De Donderdagen: een focus op een breed publiek en met een capaciteit tot 600 toeschouwers, dus geen te intieme voorstellingen.”
Toegankelijkheid is niet de eerste eis voor Linda uit Pelt. “Ik ga ervan uit dat als ik zelf een stuk goed vind, mijn publiek dat ook zal vinden.” Met grote broer Theater op de Markt om de hoek kiest ze in CC Palethe voor een ander soort producties, die ze graag en met succes bundelt in onder meer een double bill (vorig jaar) of een triple bill (dit seizoen). Circus maakt ook deel uit van de busroute langs drie lokale Limburgse cultuurcentra, met op één dag drie verschillende stukken. Circus gedijt goed bij een meer evenementiële aanpak, beaamt ze.
Roel uit Geel legt de lat bij zijn keuzes bewust hoog. “Ik hou wel van wat exclusiviteit. Waarom stukken kiezen die je ook op tig andere festivals en cultuurcentra kan zien?”
En dus trekt Roel graag op prospectie over de (taal)grens: naar het Mime Festival in Londen, Festival Circolo in Tilburg of circus- en straattheaterfestival Namur en Mai. “Op twee dagen tijd kan je er heel wat nieuwe, verrassende producties zien.” Roel probeert ook steevast aan te sluiten bij internationale tournees, zoals die van de Brit Thom Monckton, die speciaal uit Nederland een eenmalig uitstapje maakt naar Geel. “Je moet proactief naar buitenlandse boekingskantoren mailen. Zelf zullen ze De Werft in Geel niet zo snel weten te vinden.”
Lies uit Dilbeek geeft toe dat ze vroeger, toen ze ook nog de familieprogrammatie deed, meer op prospectie kon gaan dan nu. “Ik had toen altijd een hele waaier aan artiesten en acts in mijn achterhoofd. Dat kwam goed van pas, om bijvoorbeeld ook circus binnen te smokkelen op evenementen zoals De Dag van de Dilbekenaar.” Om meer tips uit te wisselen tussen programmatoren, is het circusoverleg dat Circuscentrum organiseert erg handig. “Daar kom je toch altijd buiten met ideeën én de motivatie om zelf iets te gaan bekijken.”
Martijn, die in Ternat alle kunstdisciplines moet programmeren, heeft simpelweg niet de tijd om circus te scouten. Hij beroept zich dan vooral ook op tipgevers of op Tournee Mondial, een ander overlegorgaan waarin Vlaamse programmatoren onderling internationale artiesten naar hier proberen te halen, waaronder ook al eens een buitenlandse circusgroep.
Linda uit Pelt daarentegen zal niet zo gauw ‘blind boeken’: zij gaat een stuk liever eerst zelf scouten. “Er is veel brol in het circustheater. Het aanbod is zo groot en er is veel vernieuwing. Gezelschappen maken soms maar een of twee stukken en verdwijnen dan weer of ze gaan voort in een andere samenstelling. Er is minder continuïteit dan bij pakweg theater, waar je toch gezelschappen hebt die al twintig of dertig jaar een constante kwaliteit afleveren.”
Eens hun keuzes zijn gemaakt, moet er natuurlijk nog publiek gevonden worden. Iedereen aan tafel is het erover eens dat, op uitzonderingen als Circus Ronaldo na, het meeste publiek niet afkomt op een bepaalde naam, maar op de noemer ‘circus’. Dat circusartiesten vaak geen klinkende namen zijn bij niet-kenners, hoeft volgens Lies uit Dilbeek geen probleem te zijn. “Circusgezelschappen hebben vaak veel beter promotiemateriaal zoals foto’s en video’s dan de meeste theater- of dansgroepen. Als je dat goed uitspeelt online en op je website, kan je je publiek écht warm maken om te komen.” Internationale artiesten zijn daar beter in dan binnenlandse, klinkt het aan tafel. En het promomateriaal wordt er alleen maar beter op als een voorstelling langer toert, wat bij succesvolle circusvoorstellingen bijna altijd zo is.
Toch bestaan er nog veel misverstanden bij de mensen, zo zegt Roel uit Geel. “Het publiek dat komt kijken, heeft meestal wel een goed beeld van hedendaags circus. Maar het publiek waarvan ik graag wil dat het óók zou komen, denkt bij circus helaas nog aan het oude beeld.” Clichés zoals clowns en dieren, dus. Maar tegenwoordig uiten die verwachtingen zich ook subtieler, meent Roel. “Veel circusvoorstellingen leunen op een of twee technieken. Dat valt niet bij iedereen in goede aarde: soms verwachten toeschouwers meer variatie, meer trucs.”
En dan is er nog die andere klassieke misvatting, namelijk dat circus alleen voor kinderen of families is. “Ik aarzel vaak om 8+ bij de titel te zetten, omdat ik niet wil dat volwassenen al meteen zouden denken dat het niets voor hen is,” vertelt Lies uit Dilbeek. “Dan zet ik liever ergens onderaan in de programmatekst ‘ook geschikt vanaf acht jaar’.” Volgens Martijn uit Ternat gebeurt het ook dat gezelschappen, zoals There There Company voor Carrying my father, expliciet vragen om hen niet te vermelden als familievoorstelling. Via het startuur maak je natuurlijk ook veel duidelijk: een voorstelling die begint om 19u is duidelijk (ook) voor een jonger publiek, eentje die aanvangt om 20u30 is dat meestal niet (in de eerste plaats).
Die generatiebrede aanpak en niet-taligheid van veel circusvoorstellingen biedt natuurlijk ook perspectieven. Het is niet toevallig dat De Donderdagen circus inzet voor zomers vertier en toegankelijke cultuur. “We merken dat sommige mensen zelfs vijf of zes donderdagen komen,” vertelt Ben. “Eén editie organiseren we telkens in een van de deelgemeenten van Ninove en dan maken we er een breed volksfeest van. Dit jaar hebben we ook bewust de voorstelling Amoukanama travels, van twee acrobaten uit Guinee, getoond in het Stadspark. Daar hangen veel jonge, vaak zwarte, skaters rond. Bij eerdere circusvoorstellingen met blanke artiesten keken ze hooguit eens op. Nu waren ze geprikkeld, en kwamen ze kijken.”
Ben probeert die jonge Ninovieters ook nog op een andere manier te betrekken. “Vaak vragen gezelschappen twee à drie mensen die mee helpen opbouwen en afbreken. Wel, daarvoor vragen we al eens deze jongeren, die vaak heel handig zijn en dat ook fijn vinden. En het brengt hen meteen, op een laagdrempelige manier, in contact met circusartiesten.”
Een veel gehoorde verzuchting is dat de kostprijs van circusvoorstellingen veel hoger zou liggen dan die van dans of theater. De groep knikt instemmend. “We moeten vaak materiaal bij huren,” zegt Martijn uit Ternat. “Zeker bij voorstellingen op locatie. Denk aan toiletten, verwarming of airco in de tent, platen om op de ondergrond te leggen als het zou regenen… Bij buitenlandse groepen zijn de kosten voor transport en overnachting bovendien groter. Maar omdat wij in Ternat op vlak van circus vooral familievoorstellingen programmeren, liggen de ticketprijzen en dus ook de inkomsten lager dan bij avondvoorstellingen.”
Ook de uitkoopsommen van circus liggen volgens Lies uit Dilbeek eerder in de orde van dans dan het goedkopere theater. Mochten de uitkoopsommen lager liggen, zouden de meeste aan tafel overwegen om meer circus te boeken. Maar met creatieve oplossingen spring je al ver, legt Roel uit Geel uit. “Famille choisie van Carré Curieux hebben we getoond samen met CC ’t Schaliken uit Herentals en De Warande in Turnhout. Daardoor konden we de kosten al delen door drie. We hadden ook het geluk dat we op die locatie geen extra kosten hadden: er was geen beveiliging nodig, er was een elektriciteitskast aanwezig en er was een kleedkamer met douches van een sportclub vlakbij. In totaal kwamen we voor die drie opvoeringen zelfs goedkoper uit dan heel wat eenmalige producties in onze schouwburg.”
Lies uit Dilbeek, die ook dans programmeert, vertelt dat ze bij dans meer verlies lijdt dan bij circus. “De uitkoopsommen van circus en dans zijn vergelijkbaar, maar bij dans is er meestal toch iets minder publiek.” Ook Linda uit Pelt beaamt dat circustheater nooit ‘quitte’ zal spelen. Volgens haar is het de taak van een cultuurcentrum om creatief om te springen met budgetten. “Voor de gemeente moeten we een bepaald percentage eigen inkomsten halen. Die realiseren we bijvoorbeeld uit enkele populaire muziekproducties met bekende namen, zodat we ook al eens circusvoorstellingen kunnen plaatsen die misschien maar 60 toeschouwers lokken. Ook dat moet kunnen.”
De vijf programmatoren aan tafel grijpen zelden of nooit terug op spektakelcircus uit het commerciële circuit om de kas te spijzen. Roel: “Ik heb één keer wintercircus Arlette Hanson geboekt: dat is traditioneel tentcircus, maar dan in het theater. Dat deed ik vooral omdat zij audiodescriptie aanboden, die trouwens van ontzettend goede kwaliteit is. Artistiek kan je je bij dit circus vragen stellen, maar omdat toegankelijkheid en acties naar doelgroepen erg belangrijk zijn voor ons, heb ik hen toch geboekt. Dat was een groot succes: er kwamen blinden uit heel België kijken. Ik krijg nog geregeld de vraag van ons publiek wanneer we hen terug uitnodigen.”
Ook Lies uit Dilbeek boekte het wintercircus één keer, bij wijze van experiment. “Ik wou weten of we hiermee een ander publiek zouden aantrekken, die dan zo misschien de weg zouden vinden naar het hedendaagse circus. Dat heeft ons toen inderdaad een volle zaal opgeleverd, maar dat gebeurt even goed bij een knappe hedendaagse circusvoorstelling.”
Naast de financiën zijn vooral de technische vereisten van circusproducties een hindernis. De middelgrote en kleine cultuurcentra aan deze tafel kunnen niet zomaar elk stuk presenteren. Met een scènehoogte van 5,5 meter is Ternat, net als Pelt, niet geschikt voor veel acrobatie- en trapezevoorstellingen. “Stukken van Gravity & Other Myths of Ockham’s Razor: ik zou ze graag willen tonen, maar ze kunnen bij ons niet binnen,” aldus Martijn van Ternat.
Wat niet wil zeggen dat de centra niet investeren in circustechniek. Zo werd er in Pelt een rigging point geïnstalleerd boven de scène. In Geel fixeert men de trekken om er zo zware gewichten aan te kunnen hangen. De technici van de cultuurcentra staan wel niet altijd te springen om circusgezelschappen binnen te halen, zo blijkt. “Ik hoor toch vaak: ‘ah, zijn er nu weer circusartiesten? En die praten dus alleen Frans?’” lacht Linda uit Pelt.
Soms is niet het teveel, maar het tekort aan werk het probleem, reageert Martijn uit Ternat. “Vooral bij Franse gezelschappen is dat vaak zo. Dan staat er in hun contract dat ze een extra opbouwdag nodig hebben, terwijl die achteraf niet nodig bleek. Of ze vragen vijf technici van ons, terwijl de opbouw perfect met twee technici was gelukt.” Roel en Linda knikken: “Als er al eens discussies zijn over technische fiches, is het altijd met Franse gezelschappen.”
Tot slot vraag ik hen waar ze nog van dromen op vlak van circus voor hun cultuurcentrum. Martijn uit Ternat wil vooral meer inzetten op regionale samenwerking met andere centra, zeker voor locatievoorstellingen, naar de voorbeelden van Pelt en Noord-Limburg (voor Forever, Happily… van Collectif Malunés), Geel en de Kempen (voor Carré Curieux en nu Akoreacro) en Dilbeek en regio west-Brussel (voor Circus Ronaldo). “Op je eigen kleine zakdoek werken is financieel niet altijd haalbaar,” aldus Martijn.
Lies uit Dilbeek is dan weer vooral jaloers op het concept van De Donderdagen uit Ninove. “Zo’n zomerprogramma kan echt een diverser publiek naar het circus brengen, zeker als het ook een soort totaalbeleving wordt. Dat merkte ik ook met Gonzende Zondag, een festival voor de hele familie met circus en straattheater dat ik vroeger organiseerde in Dilbeek. Daar bereikten we toch een heel ander publiek dan bij circusvoorstellingen in onze theaterzaal.”
Die toeleiding naar circus mag ook in Geel nog beter, vindt Roel. Verder droomt hij van een ideale buitenlocatie om circus te kunnen programmeren. “Eentje waar alle faciliteiten altijd voorhanden zijn en we niet afhankelijk zijn van de puzzel die toevallig goed valt.”
Ben zou circus liever structureel ingebed zien in Ninove en niet enkel tijdens de zomer, zoals nu het geval is. “Binnen dit en vijf jaar moet er een circusatelier zijn bij ons, vind ik. Ik heb vroeger al eens gepolst bij Circusplaneet uit Gent en Circus Zonder Handen uit Brussel of ze niet iets in Ninove zouden willen organiseren, maar dat bleek voor hen toch te ver.”
Ook Linda uit Pelt en Lies uit Dilbeek dromen van een eigen circusatelier in hun gemeente. Lies: “Vroeger hebben we zelf nog ateliers georganiseerd voor kleuters en hun ouders. Knap aan circusateliers is dat daar zowel kinderen die heel ambitieus en competitief zijn als zij die dat niet zijn zich kunnen uitleven. Dat zie je toch zelden in sport. Circus kan je individueel beoefenen en toch in groep. Het kan heel veel in beweging zetten voor je ontwikkeling.” Of zoals Roel uit Geel besluit: “Circus is de perfecte mix tussen beweging, sport en cultuur!”
