Aangekomen in het dorp waar Circus Picolini die dag optreedt, kijk ik vergeefs uit naar een grote circustent want die staat ietwat verscholen op het terrein achter een schoolgebouw. De hele school is kleurrijk versierd, roodfluwelen gordijnen flankeren de ingang, er hangen tekeningen uit van clowns en circustenten, leerkrachten dragen grote strikken en tulen rokjes. Hier gaat straks geen doorsnee circusvoorstelling door, maar eentje die het resultaat is van een intense samenwerking van Circus Picolini met de schoolkinderen.

Samensmelting
Het project Circus op School dompelt kinderen onder in verschillende circustechnieken en laat hen een echte circusvoorstelling in elkaar boksen. De bezielers zijn Dennis Hartmann en Eefje Truyens. Zij zetten tien jaar geleden het in 1996 opgerichte Circus Picolini voort. De familie Hartmann toerde rond met een echt familiecircus en startte niet lang na de oprichting met circuskampen in samenwerking met Crefi en Kazou. De Picolini’s ontwikkelden een manier om circustechnieken aan te leren aan kinderen en zo ontstond het idee om dit ook op scholen te organiseren. De vraag naar Circus op School werd al snel te groot, en dus besloten de Picolini’s om zich uitsluitend op scholen en kampen te focussen. Toen zijn broers en zussen vaarwel zeiden tegen het circusleven of andere circusoorden opzochten, besloot Dennis om verder te doen met de scholen en kampen, samen met zijn vrouw Eefje.
Dennis is opgegroeid in het circus. Vooraleer zijn ouders zelf een circus oprichtten, verdienden ze hun strepen bij verschillende circussen. Zijn vader en grootvader hebben altijd rondgetrokken met een traditioneel circus. Dennis: “Mijn grootvader heeft nog met wilde dieren gewerkt, hij trok rond door Europa. Mijn vader legde zich vooral toe op clownerie, jongleren en acrobatie. Ik leerde de stiel van hem. Dit is wat ik graag doe.”
In een vorig leven was Eefje leerkracht lager onderwijs. Tot op een dag een circus neerstreek op de school waar ze werkte en – je raadt het al – ze haar hart verloor aan Dennis. De liefde voor een circusman betekent quasi automatisch liefde voor het circus. En zo kreeg de scholenwerking vorm: “Wat we doen met Circus Picolini is echt een samensmelten van onze twee passies en sterktes: circus en lager onderwijs,” aldus Eefje.
Samen trekken ze rond langs Nederlandstalige scholen in Vlaanderen en Brussel. Het is geen traditioneel circus, noch een kunsteducatieve organisatie. Dennis: “Met Circus Picolini vallen we zowat tussen alle bestaande categorieën. Wie mij ziet, gelooft bijna niet dat ik een circusdirecteur ben. Mensen hebben toch nog dat beeld in hun hoofd van de excentrieke circusdirecteur met snor en hoed. Ik speel daar mee in de show.” Ook Eefje ervaart de verdeeldheid tussen twee labels: “We brengen geen traditioneel circus, maar we trekken wel rond van school naar school, we leven in woonwagens en bouwen onze tent elke keer op. We zijn echt iets apart: onze wortels liggen in het gewone circus en we spelen op locatie, maar het is altijd gelinkt aan een project op een school of een kamp.”
Alternatief schoolfeest
De eerste etappe van het scholenproject is het geven van drie workshops. De leerlingen maken kennis met verschillende circustechnieken en blijven verder oefenen met hun leerkrachten. Wanneer Dennis opnieuw langskomt, zijn de groepjes gevormd. Los van leeftijd en klas mag iedereen kiezen welke techniek hij of zij het liefste onder de knie krijgt. Elk groepje verdiept zich dan samen met Dennis nog meer in de gekozen techniek zodat ze vervolgens een act in elkaar kunnen steken. De zondag voor de projectweek zetten Dennis en Eefje samen met een paar sterke ouders de tent op. De hele week staat in het teken van circus: de tent wordt ingericht, Eefje geeft een vertelmoment over het circusleven en begeleidt samen met haar kinderen de school in de circustent tot aan de generale repetitie. Hét moment om te schitteren is de voorstelling op vrijdag en zaterdag samen met de Picolini’s.
En zo bevind ik me plots tussen nieuwsgierige mama’s en papa’s en grootouders die vol verwachting plaatsnemen in de grote circustent. Leerkrachten leuren met gadgets voor de show aanvangt en de vrijwilligers van de bar en het hotdogkraam maken zich op voor de toeschouwers die na de voorstelling nog willen napraten. De show is een onderhoudende afwisseling van acts van de kinderen en van de Picolini’s. Met trots brengen de verschillende groepen hun nummer waar ze zo hard aan gewerkt hebben. Er wordt gejongleerd, diabolo’s vliegen gecontroleerd door de lucht, bordjes balanceren gevaarlijk op een stokje, … Het publiek is vertederd door Eefjes act met het hondje en slaakt een zucht wanneer Dennis hoog in de lucht op de rola rola balanceert.
De acts van Circus Picolini zijn een extraatje dat de show ‘af’ maakt, de kinderen zijn de échte sterren. Dennis: “Veel mensen denken dat we meer toeschouwers zouden lokken als we onze tent op het dorpsplein opslaan, maar daar draait het voor ons niet om. Het belangrijkste is dat de ouders en grootouders naar de kinderen komen kijken.” Zie het als een alternatief schoolfeest waarbij de ambiance verzekerd is.
Eefje: “Het is echt de show van de kinderen, in samenwerking met Circus Picolini. De voorstelling kan alleen maar slagen als er wordt samengewerkt en als de ganse school er achter staat. Het optreden is voor een select maar enthousiast publiek. De school verkoopt de tickets en hoewel iedereen welkom is, lokt de show vooral familie van de kinderen.”
Aanvankelijk werkte Eefje achter de schermen, maar nu staat ze met veel plezier op het podium: “Het was niet m’n ambitie om in een circus te werken, maar toen de familie van Dennis stopte met het circus, besloten we het er op te wagen om hun werking verder te zetten. En dat ging zo goed dat ik uiteindelijk mijn job als juf opgaf. 24 uur op 24 samenwerken met je wederhelft is niet evident, maar het lukt ons aardig. Aanvankelijk zag ik mezelf geen acts doen, maar toen ik een hondje kocht was ik er niet lang nadien toch al mee aan het trainen.”
Ze vervolgt: “Onze kinderen groeien op in het circusleven. Ook al ben ik ‘van buitenaf’, ik vind het mooi wat voor leven ze hebben. We pushen hen zeker niet om trucjes te leren of op te treden, maar zij zien dit de hele tijd en willen dat ook kunnen. De jongens kunnen al erg goed jongleren, de meisjes zijn nu bezig met diabolo en de split.”
Tijdens de show zetten de meisjes soms de muziek op en geven ze materiaal aan bij acts. Amper vier jaar oud is Amélie, maar ze presenteert de show mee alsof ze nooit iets anders gedaan heeft. De tweejarige Olivia steelt de show als assistente en laat zelfs een bordje draaien op haar vinger.
Dennis vertelt dat leerkrachten altijd verbaasd zijn over wat de schoolkinderen kunnen. “Als ik de eerste keer langskom en vertel wat we allemaal gaan doen en waar we naartoe werken, zie je de leerkrachten vertwijfeld kijken. Of ze willen ook de technieken aanleren, maar moeten vaststellen dat de kinderen er sneller mee weg zijn. Uiteindelijk helpen zij vooral mee sturen, ze kunnen het beste inschatten wie met wie kan staan.”
De belangrijkste voorwaarde om het project te doen slagen is dat iedereen meewerkt. Wanneer de school of de ouderraad er niet in gelooft of verwacht dat Circus Picolini met een kant en klare show komt, is de uitdaging des te groter. Met zeventien jaar ervaring weet Dennis intussen dat het eindresultaat in elke school de moeite is: “Uiteindelijk zijn ze erg dankbaar voor wat wij met die kinderen realiseren.” “Vaak kunnen ze het niet geloven dat er een echte show uit zal voortkomen,” vertelt Eefje. “Pas als de grote tent er staat, beseffen ze dat het echt gaat gebeuren. Bij de generale repetitie komt alles tot zijn recht, en zie je iedereen denken: ‘Wauw!’ Dat geeft enorm veel voldoening.”
Volgeboekt
Hoe kijken Dennis en Eefje tegen traditioneel circus aan? “Zelf zou ik het niet willen doen,” zegt Eefje, “maar we kijken er niet op neer. Ik denk dat we beide onze sterktes hebben en ik vind het wel eens leuk om naar een traditionele voorstelling te gaan kijken. Zij hebben een heel andere band met het publiek. Wij werken een week samen met kinderen, onderwijzers en iedereen die betrokken is. Dat zou ik niet willen missen.”
Dennis: “Als er vlakbij een circus speelt, zullen we wel eens gaan kijken, maar als we al eens een vrij moment hebben, doen we liever iets anders.”
Eefje: “Het is hard werken want we zijn maar met twee. Dat hebben we zeker gemeen met een traditioneel circus: als het je passie is, heb je het harde werk er voor over.”
Dennis: “Het grote verschil met een traditioneel circus is dat wij niet rondtrekken om onze eigen voorstelling te spelen. Overal waar we neerstrijken, krijgen we de vraag wanneer de show is en waarom we geen reclame maken. Of buurtbewoners komen vragen waar de dieren staan. Blijkbaar verwachten mensen dat toch nog altijd van circus.”
Dat brengt ons naadloos bij het onderwerp hedendaags circus. Even is er verwarring over wat dat betekent. Wanneer Eefje voorzichtig formuleert dat circusvoorstellingen in theaters ver van hen af staan, houdt Dennis een pleidooi voor de hardcore aanpak: “Bij ons is een show het slotstuk van een heel proces. Bij zo’n optreden komt enorm veel voorbereiding kijken, het is hard werken. Sommige artiesten willen nadat ze zijn afgestudeerd aan een circusschool ervaring opdoen in een traditioneel circus, zij klagen dan dat ze meer bezig zijn met tenten opzetten dan met optreden.”
Eefje: “In die zin voelen wij ons meer verbonden met het traditionele circus. Wij trekken rond, zetten onze circustent op, gebruiken hetzelfde materiaal voor acts, hebben dezelfde manier van optreden met een opening en een finale en worden met dezelfde problemen geconfronteerd tijdens het rondtrekken. Onze kinderen helpen ook mee, dat familiale aspect hoort er gewoon bij. Wij hebben minder voeling met hedendaags circus maar vinden het wel leuk dat deze mensen hun passie voor circus op een andere manier vertalen.”
Voelen Dennis en Eefje dan nooit de drang om eens te experimenteren, iets anders te doen? Eefje voelt die behoefte niet: “Het project blijft hetzelfde, maar elke week is anders omdat we telkens in een andere schoolcultuur terechtkomen. Onze acts veranderen ook door de jaren. Nu zijn we met een nieuwe vuurshow bezig. Nu de kinderen groter worden ontstaan ook nieuwe mogelijkheden.”
Dennis prijst zich gelukkig dat Circus Picolini niet commercieel moet denken, zoals een gewoon circus. Dankzij de mond-tot-mondreclame zitten ze al volgeboekt tot 2019. “Zoals wij het aanpakken doet niemand het. Je moet natuurlijk wel kunnen samenwerken met scholen, hun vertrouwen winnen en mensen kunnen leiden. Het geeft me enorm veel voldoening dat ik hiermee mijn brood kan verdienen. Mensen hebben geen hoge dunk van een job in het circus, maar ik ben trots dat wij bereiken wat we voor ogen hebben.”
Zou Dennis zich kunnen voorstellen dat hij een andere job uitoefende? “Als het moet wel, maar het liefst van al zou ik dit zo lang mogelijk blijven doen. Weet je, werken in een circus is niet zomaar een job, het is een manier van leven.” Het is duidelijk dat Dennis en Eefje met hun familiecircus die way of life niet zomaar opgeven.
