Cirque du Soleil. Een naam als een klok. Een wereldberoemd merk met een gedeponeerde naam. Het grootste en bekendste circusgezelschap ter wereld. Een hallucinante entertainmentmachine met een eclatant commercieel succes. Werkgever van topturners met pensioen, dansers en circusartiesten. De cijfers zijn overdonderend en de kritieken wereldwijd laaiend. Al meer dan 30 jaar lang. Het grote publiek en de pers zijn bijna zonder uitzondering lovend. Bij circusliefhebbers en vooral bij veel artiesten zijn de meningen verdeeld. Er doen veel broodje-aapverhalen de ronde over Cirque du Soleil, maar daar doet CircusMagazine niet aan mee. Wij kropen samen met Benjamin Eugène, Antonio Terrones, Guy Waerenburgh, Anne-Agathe Prin, Guillermo Leon De Keijzer en Jasper D’Hondt onder het tentzeil. Want enkel wie er gewerkt heeft snapt pas echt wat ‘larger than life’ betekent.
Ze zijn gemakkelijk te herkennen op internationale circuscompetities en sportwedstrijden. De scouts van Cirque du Soleil dragen vol trots het trainingsvest of het debardeurke van hun beroemde werkgever. Wie hen kan overtuigen, krijgt vroeg of laat een telefoontje, maar er zijn nog andere wegen die naar Soleil leiden…
Benjamin Eugène: “Ik heb een video opgestuurd. Op de site van Cirque du Soleil kun je een video uploaden en zo kom je in hun database terecht. Daarna hebben ze mij gecontacteerd voor Corteo, voor drie à vier maanden.”
Guy Waerenburgh: “Bij ons hadden ze eigenlijk de Gandini’s (Engels jongleergezelschap, red.) gecontacteerd om hun lichtgevende kegelact te herwerken. Ze zochten een groep van vier personen die een nummer zouden brengen geregisseerd door Sean Gandini zelf. Het moest binnen de drie maanden gebeuren, want ze hadden een reeds bestaande voorstelling aangepast en ze wilden wat nieuwe nummers erin. Bij Gandini vonden ze zo gauw niemand die vrij was binnen hun gezelschap en zo zijn ze bij ons beland.”
Guillermo Leon De Keijzer: “Ik ben afgestudeerd in 2014 en was aan het stressen over mijn toekomst. In die periode heb ik op de website van Soleil mijn video en cv geüpload, waarna de boodschap ‘Congratulations, you’re in the database’ volgde. Ik maakte me geen illusies omdat ik wel vermoedde dat die database duizenden namen bevatte. Toch werd ik gecontacteerd door Samuel Roy, talentscout voor Cirque du Soleil en jongleerleerkracht aan de circushogeschool van Montreal. Hij deed de casting voor de voorstelling Quidam en hij vroeg me om een bestaande act in te studeren voor een eventuele vervanging. Na een tweetal weken zweten om het nummer te kopiëren stuurde ik de video op. Uiteindelijk greep ik naast de rol, maar ik kreeg te horen dat ze mij in beeld hielden voor toekomstige projecten.”
Antonio Terrones: “Wij hebben zelf geen contact gezocht, maar de scouts zijn naar de EXIT van ESAC (de jaarlijkse afstudeervoorstelling van de Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque, red.) komen kijken en daarna nog eens op het Young Talent Festival in Wiesbaden. Ze hebben ons gevraagd om te vervangen in Corteo, maar we wilden ons eigen ding doen. Uiteindelijk hebben ze ons gecontacteerd voor Amaluna en dat sprak ons meer aan omdat we zelf konden creëren.”
Sommige artiesten vervangen een bestaande act, anderen creëren iets nieuws en een enkeling slaagt erin om zijn eigen nummer aan Cirque du Soleil te verpatsen. Je vertrekt op tournee met de Grand Chapiteau, speelt in een vaste show in Las Vegas, neemt sporadisch deel aan een van de vele Special Events of… je komt in een vakantiepark terecht.
Guillermo: “In 2015 werd ik gecontacteerd om deel uit te maken van Creactive, een soort van Cirque du Soleil in Club Med (de vakantieoperator, red.). Het werk zou bestaan uit een combinatie van circusles geven aan toeristen en voorstellingen spelen. Ik werd naar Montreal gevlogen, ik verbleef ter plaatse en werd rondgeleid in de gebouwen. Overweldigend. We maakten een voorstelling met een groep artiesten en een regisseur die geen inspraak duldde. Ik hield het uiteindelijk vier maanden vol. We moesten veel meer lesgeven dan voorstellingen spelen, kregen lessen over hoe met de toeristen om te gaan, we kregen opmerkingen over onze kleding, ik moest mij beter scheren. Ik voelde me geen artiest meer, maar deel van het vakantieparkpersoneel. Het was een misverstand, maar ik heb er geen spijt van, de naam Cirque du Soleil staat nog altijd goed op mijn cv.”
Benjamin: “Mijn eerste show bij Soleil was bij Corteo, een vervanging in een basculenummer nadat twee acrobaten vertrokken waren. Van daaruit hebben ze mij Mystère in Las Vegas voorgesteld omdat ze daar een nieuwe bascule-act wilden maken. Daar ben ik iets langer dan een jaar geweest, en daarna heb ik Amaluna gedaan om terug te kunnen toeren, wat ik leuker vond dan in Las Vegas wonen. Als je goed in vorm bent als basculespringer kun je wel wat dingen gedaan krijgen, maar aan de andere kant geraak je moeilijk weg omdat ze willen dat je blijft als je goed springt.”
Antonio: “Eerst probeert het castingteam je te overhalen om mee te doen, daarna word je doorgestuurd naar iemand van de productie die alles regelt in verband met contracten en betalingen en vakanties. De castingmensen zijn eigenlijk de toffe mensen. Die willen gewoon een ja of een nee, de hardere business komt erna, met mensen die echt heel goed weten wat ze doen. Het contract moet je eigenlijk met een advocaat doen. Wij hebben alles laten nalezen, om alle 80 pagina’s te begrijpen. Toen we ondertekenden hadden we het gevoel dat we wel iets hadden bereikt, maar achteraf gezien hadden we sommige dingen beter kunnen regelen. Wat mondeling toegezegd was gebeurde uiteindelijk toch niet. We hebben er heel veel uit geleerd, maar het feit dat ze daar misbruik van hebben gemaakt is een van de mindere kanten.”
“Wie twee jaar bij Cirque du Soleil speelt kan een huis kopen!” of “Topjongleur Viktor Kee verdient 100 keer zoveel als Chinese acrobaat nr. 17”. Over de lonen en contracten bij Cirque du Soleil doen de wildste geruchten de ronde. Bij Soleil zelf willen ze die informatie liever geheim houden. Gelukkig doorbreken onze Belgische artiesten de omerta.
Jasper D’Hondt: “Je kunt onderhandelen over je loon tot je binnengaat. Daarna zit je daaraan vast. Als je je contract later wil verlengen, heb je geen mogelijkheid om het opnieuw open te gooien. Eens je er werkt geldt een systeem van anciënniteit. De onderhandelingsmarge die je krijgt is ongeveer twee à drie procent maar dat hangt ook af van een aantal dingen: hoe goed je je gedraagt, hoe goed je je make-up doet, … ze kunnen je op alles belonen of pakken. Ze gebruiken dat ook echt om mensen in het gareel te houden. Ze maken ook een verschil tussen geïnviteerde nummers en een ‘Troupe Maison’ of ‘House Troop’. In dat tweede geval maak je deel uit van een collectief dat een nummer speelt en daarnaast nog opduikt in verschillende andere dingen. Als je in een ‘House Troop’ zit, is er een plafond aan het loon dat je kunt verdienen. Als je een solo-, duo- of trio-act hebt, dan zit je daar echt veel boven.”
Benjamin: “Als je bascule springt in een show die al bestaat, dan ben je ‘House Troop’. Ik heb toch een beetje kunnen onderhandelen omdat ik hen vertelde dat ik eventueel nog een ander contract had. Ik heb zes dollar extra per show kunnen loskrijgen. Er is sowieso maar een heel kleine onderhandelingsmarge. De lonen van de artiesten liggen ver uit elkaar. Soms is het wel vreemd om te zien dat bijvoorbeeld de clowns in de voorstelling het dubbele verdienen, terwijl de acrobaten veel meer risico’s lopen.”
Antonio: “Wij werden iets beter betaald dan de House Troop. Omwille van de creatie van ons nummer hebben we dat bedrag wat omhoog gekregen, wij zaten – hoewel ik dit eigenlijk niet mag zeggen – tegen de 180 dollar per voorstelling. Dat is zeker oké, maar ze kunnen eigenlijk meer betalen. Toentertijd dacht ik dat dat niet mogelijk was, maar nu denk ik dat het wel kan.”
Anne-Agathe Prin: “Wij kregen 150 dollar per voorstelling per jongleur, wat goed is voor een nummer met zijn vieren. We waren niet bij de belangrijke nummers. Wij kregen negen voorstellingen betaald per week, maar we speelden er maar acht. In Vegas spelen ze er vaak tien per week. Maar in Macau zouden we tegen dat ritme voor lege zalen hebben gespeeld.”
Guillermo: “Ik zou een jaar verblijven op de Dominicaanse Republiek, goed betaald aan ongeveer 3000 euro per maand.”
Jasper: “Ze doen bij Cirque du Soleil soms hypocriet bij onderhandelingen over lonen. Je mag in principe tegen niemand vertellen hoeveel je betaald wordt. Maar ze gebruiken wel altijd in de onderhandelingen dat ze niet meer kunnen betalen omdat er dan geen gelijkheid meer is tussen de artiesten. De topsporters die worden ingelijfd na een competitie en in Montreal worden omgevormd tot circusartiest beginnen ongeveer allemaal aan hetzelfde loon: rond de 120/130 dollar per voorstelling. Je speelt negen keer per week. Op zich is dat geen slecht loon als je op tournee bent. Zeker met de aanvullende per diems (een dagelijkse vergoeding voor bijvoorbeeld maaltijden, red.). Maar als je dan vergelijkt met wat anderen in dezelfde voorstelling verdienen…”
Guy: “Veel Chinese acrobaten hebben een heel vreemde deal, want Cirque du Soleil onderhandelt niet met hen afzonderlijk, maar met de circusschool waar ze opgeleid zijn. Ze bestellen bij die school een bepaalde act. De school stuurt hen de acrobaten en zij worden betaald als House Troop, maar de school krijgt daarvan de helft. Er blijft dus iets meer dan 50 dollar over. Er zijn grote salariële ongelijkheden.”
Wijlen Humo-columnist Patrick De Witte (alias pdw) over Cirque du Soleil: “Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du fucking Soleil? Laat het duidelijk zijn: iemand die, alvorens door een hoepel te duiken, zijn evenwicht op een grote strandbal weet te bewaren en vervolgens een dubbele salto maakt, is een gymnast. Geen kunstenaar. Door kleurige linten sierlijk van zijn ledematen te laten wapperen en er sfeervolle belichting en een melancholisch muziekje bij te serveren wordt het geen, ik herhaal, géén kunst. Het blijft: héél erg goed turnen.”
Jasper: “Mij interesseert het ook niet om gymnasten te zien, dan ga je beter naar een gymgala. Daar heb je nog de stress van de competitie en de punten, daar zit iets echts in.”
Guy: “Als je je goed wil voelen bij Cirque du Soleil: wees uitvoerend artiest en hou het daarbij. Voor de circusartiesten kan het erg frustrerend zijn. Wij speelden een nummer waar we niet tevreden over waren en ik heb tot in het oneindige geprobeerd om dat nummer te verbeteren. Met concrete voorstellen die we getoond hebben aan de regisseur, en het antwoord was systematisch: ‘Stop daarmee. Dat is jouw job niet. Jij jongleert wat wij beslist hebben dat je moet jongleren.’ Ik stel me voor dat de regisseur wil dat het werkt zoals in het leger: ‘Ik ben de generaal, en als iedereen hier zijn eigen ideetje heeft en wil bijdragen, dan werkt het leger niet.’ Ik begrijp dus wel dat ze het zo aanpakken. Dat werkt voor sommige mensen heel goed en voor anderen totaal niet. Voor mij lag het in elk geval heel moeilijk.”
Antonio: “Zelfs de regisseur heeft geen 100% zeggenschap. Cirque du Soleil kiest de artiesten en bepaalt welke acts er in de voorstelling moeten. Onze regisseur wou geen clowns. Maar in elke Cirque du Soleil-show zitten twee clowns, dus het moest. De regisseur is niet vrij om de show te maken die hij wil. Als Guy Laliberté langskwam en hij wou er iets uit, dan had de regisseur daar niets in te zeggen.”
Jasper: “In de voorstelling Luzia zijn ze er dankzij de regisseur toch in geslaagd om er iets deftig van te maken. Er zit een duidelijke identiteit achter, het heeft een eigen stijl. Helaas is hij niet kunnen blijven tot het einde, waardoor het soms met haken en ogen aaneenhangt, maar er zitten wel stukken in die – ook al is het mijn ding niet – goed gemaakt zijn. Maar er zitten grote verschillen tussen de voorstellingen.”
Anne-Agathe: “Onze voorstelling moest herwerkt en aangepast worden aan het Chinese publiek. Het was niet ‘Aziatisch’ genoeg.”
Guy: “Voor die herwerking was er een budget van vijf miljoen dollar. Om drie à vier nummers te vervangen. Met een grote regisseur uit Montreal, die al veel herwerkingen had gedaan. We hebben die regisseur al bij al misschien drie weken gezien. Op artistiek gebied waren er heel grote problemen. Met de artiesten onderling hebben we dan maar zelf een paar dagen afgesproken om op zijn minst toch een soort technische basis te kunnen voorstellen eens we in Macau waren. Maar eenmaal daar aangekomen toonden we alles aan de plaatselijke regisseur en die zei: ‘Prima, we houden het zo.’ Wat een ontgoocheling! We hadden het snel snel in vier dagen gemaakt, puur als basis, we zouden dat toch niet één jaar aan een stuk spelen voor Cirque du Soleil? Wat een boerenbedrog!”
Antonio: “In het begin konden wij zelf mee creëren; samen met de assistent dingen maken en aaneenvoegen en daarna aan de regisseur voorstellen. We hebben wel een kleine confrontatie gehad met onze trainer, die was het niet eens met wat we deden. Toen is Guy Laliberté komen kijken en die vond het keigoed. Nadat hij gezegd had dat hij onze stijl goed vond, waren we vrijer. Maar de kostuums bijvoorbeeld, daar konden wij niks aan veranderen: jeans en bloot bovenlijf… jammer. We konden wel vragen om wat meer elastiek tussen de benen, maar dat was het dan ook.”
Guy: “Het artistieke is bij Soleil echt verboden terrein. Maar ik snap het wel. Veel van hun artiesten zijn ex-gymnasten… ik heb Chinese artiesten gezien die hun maquillage met de truweel snel aanbrachten in een kwartier tijd, verschrikkelijk om te zien. Ik heb Russen zien kletsen over hun verzekeringen tijdens het groeten. Elke week hadden we een artistieke meeting en elke week werd er gevraagd om niet te praten tijdens het eindapplaus. Het kon hen blijkbaar niks schelen en dat maakte mij ook kwaad.”
Jasper: “Wij hebben altijd gekozen om niet te vervangen in een bestaand nummer. Het project in Quebec ging echt om een nieuw nummer creëren, dat was altijd met onze eigen input. Ook in Zarkana. Het is een verschil als je je eigen ding kunt doen onder hun regie, dan gewoon toekomen, naar een video kijken en te horen krijgen: ‘Je doet dit, daarna dat, …’”
Cirque du Soleil verspreidt de magie van het circus over de ganse wereld met indrukwekkende en poëtische voorstellingen. Klinkt goed, maar al sinds 1992 ontvangt Cirque du Soleil geen enkele subsidie of financiële steun meer. Er moet dus winst gemaakt worden, en – in onze vrijemarkteconomie – liefst zoveel mogelijk.
Jasper: “Er is veel veranderd sinds ik er werkte. Een jaar of twee geleden heeft een groep van investeerders het ganse bedrijf overgenomen, dus geen persoon met een artistieke visie. Het was een pure businessdeal.”
Antonio: “Ze zeggen het bij Cirque du Soleil zelf: wij zijn een compagnie die winst wil maken en wij gebruiken entertainment als manier. Dus niet: wij willen kunst maken. Al proberen ze het soms wel zo te verkopen.”
Jasper: “Ze proberen consequent de circusnummers te beperken. Dat is gewoon goedkoper. Er is veel verschil tussen de eerste twee jaar van een voorstelling en nadien. Vaak nemen ze de circusartiesten aan om de voorstelling te maken, te ontwikkelen en in te spelen en daarna beginnen ze te vervangen en gymnasten in te werken. Veel circusartiesten beslissen ook zelf om de creatie te doen, een paar jaar te spelen en dan te vertrekken.”
Antonio: “Ze hebben alle shows korter gemaakt, zodat er drie op een dag gespeeld kunnen worden, de tijden tussen de shows korter zijn en de mensen ook minder geld moeten betalen voor de parking. Bij ons hebben ze acht artiesten ontslagen om de voorstelling in te korten en de kosten kleiner te maken zodat de compagnie er beter uitzag op papier. Doordat ze zo in onze show gehakt hebben, was de verhaallijn van de regisseur direct helemaal om zeep.”
Jasper: “Nog voor de overname, onder Guy Laliberté, wilden ze het ganse bedrijf iets efficiënter en financieel wat gezonder maken. Ik denk dat er tien procent van de speeltijd van elke voorstelling af moest. Wat betekent dat ze er acts gewoon uitgehaald hebben. Bijvoorbeeld het koorddansnummer in Amaluna, gemaakt door Les Colporteurs, met vier koorddansers. Die zijn met een opzeg van twee weken uit de voorstelling gehaald. Hetzelfde is gebeurd in elke voorstelling die op tournee was en ook in enkele vaste shows. Saneren, waardoor artiesten plots werkloos waren, artiesten die niet direct ergens anders konden werken.”
Guy: “Onze regisseur is ook verdronken in de geldfabriek die Cirque du Soleil geworden is. Het is geen artistiek avontuur meer, maar een avontuur van geld in een strikt hiërarchische organisatie. Alles gaat daarin verloren. Het is heel indrukwekkend om te zien.”
Antonio: “Ze hebben de voorstellingen ingekort, niet omdat ze verlies aan het maken waren, wel omdat ze niet genoeg winst aan het maken waren. Dat is een belangrijk verschil. Onze voorstelling maakte winst zodra ze voor 30% vol zat, en wij speelden bijna altijd voor een 80%, 90% of zelfs 100% volle tent, dus die winst is gigantisch.”
Benjamin: “Elke show verdient zijn geld, heeft zijn eigen inkomsten en uitgaven en budgetten, terwijl de hoofdzetel in Montreal alleen maar spendeert. Om mensen op te leiden, creaties te starten, enzovoort. Als een show een nieuw kostuum nodig heeft, dan kost dat bijvoorbeeld 3000 euro, om wat geld terug naar Montreal te laten stromen in een soort broekzak-vestzak operatie. Maar als je Company Manager bent en je moet – wat bij ons met Mystère is gebeurd – een ganse ploeg van nieuwe kostuums voorzien, dan is dat wel een aanslag op je budget. Op zich is het een systeem om geld terug naar Montreal te krijgen, maar het is wat problematisch omdat al die verschillende shows met een aparte manager zitten. En er is wel wat onderlinge competitie om de best verdienende show te zijn. De toerende shows maken trouwens minder winst dan de shows in Vegas, geloof ik.”
Guy: “Macau was het nieuwe Vegas in Azië geworden, en Cirque du Soleil wou de eerste zijn om daar voet aan wal te krijgen. Ze hadden zichzelf vijf jaar gegeven om ook in Macau rendabel te worden, maar uiteindelijk hebben ze de stekker er na drie jaar al uitgetrokken. Anne-Agathe en ik zijn er halverwege die drie jaar bijgekomen. We speelden gemiddeld voor 700 toeschouwers, vaak wat meer, maar even vaak een stuk minder. Het echte probleem was dat er grote prijsverschillen waren in de tickets, dat de goedkoopste tickets ver van het podium waren en dat de mensen vooral die tickets kochten. Er zat vaak een kloof van 30 meter tussen ons en het publiek. Er waren toeschouwers die een kaartje voor de voorstelling kochten om wat uit te slapen na twee dagen onafgebroken gokken.”
Anne-Agathe: “De voorstelling is uiteindelijk stopgezet. Ze verloren er 20 miljoen dollar per jaar, de zaal zat absoluut niet vol. Begin februari werd iedereen samengeroepen in het theater. Ze kondigden aan dat de voorstelling zou stoppen op 19 februari, over 15 dagen. Grote stilte. Er zaten daar Russische artiesten die er al jaren woonden, hun kinderen gingen er naar school, ze hadden geen huis meer in Rusland. Plotseling heb je 15 dagen om het land te verlaten. Dus grote stilte, maar ‘s avonds speel je wel je voorstelling. Moeilijke sfeer!”
Cirque du Soleil is naast een circusgezelschap ook en vooral een gigantische multinational, met een sterk hiërarchische structuur die moet gerespecteerd worden. Wat al eens kan leiden tot absurde situaties, maar gelukkig ook sappige anekdotes.
Antonio: “Toen we in Montreal aankwamen, hadden we onze eigen bascule en onze eigen matten meegenomen voor de creatie. We begonnen die uit te pakken en er begon iemand te roepen. ‘Stop, wat zijn jullie aan het doen? Dat zijn matten van Cirque du Soleil! De technici moeten dat doen, jullie zijn acrobaten, jullie weten niet hoe dat moet!’ Ik heb hen uitgelegd dat ik die matten zelf bij Eurogym had ontworpen en dat ik ze van bij mij thuis had opgestuurd. Maar we moesten eraf blijven. Ze begonnen eraan, legden de matten verkeerd en toen ik wou helpen kreeg ik te horen: ‘Bemoei u er niet mee, dit is onze job.’ We zijn naar de technisch directeur moeten gaan om te melden dat onze matten verkeerd lagen en dat we er zelf niet aan mochten komen. Absurd.”
Guy: “Er was een drummer in de liveband die zorgde voor wat effectjes tijdens ons nummer. In de loge, tijdens het maquilleren, raakte ik met hem in gesprek en overlegde ik even over op welk moment die effecten best konden werken. Nog geen 30 seconden daarna werd mijn naam omgeroepen over de intercom en moest ik bij de stage manager komen want dat mocht niet. Het staat ook duidelijk in je contract: je geeft geen feedback aan de andere artiesten. Als je iets te zeggen hebt ga je naar de stage manager die dat overbrengt naar Montreal, vandaar gaar het naar de chef van de muzikanten, en die gaat spreken met zijn drummer. Jij niet. Een grote professionele fout, opgepast!”
Antonio: “De spiegel van een van mijn vrouwelijke collega’s was kapot, en ik had die snel hersteld. Ik ben toen op het matje geroepen: ik mocht eerst en vooral al niet in de loges van de meisjes komen, en als er iets kapot is moet dat eerst door de technisch verantwoordelijke worden goedgekeurd om te herstellen. Mijn collega had het eigenlijk moeten melden aan de costumière, die het aan haar chef moest doorgeven, die het moest melden aan het hoofd van de techniek, die het op zijn beurt aan de juiste werkman moest doorgeven om het te maken. Dat zou een paar dagen geduurd hebben, terwijl ik een Leatherman-zakmes in mijn schuif had liggen en het was in twee minuten gemaakt.”
Anne-Agathe: “Tijdens ons nummer moest een van de dansers ons een extra kegel komen geven. Op een keer overhandigde hij ons een kegel die in twee stukken gebroken was, en fluisterde ons daarbij in het oor: houd hem goed recht, hij is gebroken… Er zijn nochtans reservekegels, maar dat is niet zijn verantwoordelijkheid. Hij kan of mag niet het initiatief nemen om die kapotte kegel snel te vervangen. Het moet weer via de stage manager naar de verantwoordelijke voor de accessoires.”
Antonio: “Zelf iets herstellen of bouwen was uit den boze en dat is soms moeilijk als artiest die op straat heeft opgetreden. Je doet alles zelf in het circus en dat is ook een van de dingen die ik er zo leuk aan vind. Je mocht bijvoorbeeld ook geen ladder op die hoger was dan twee meter, terwijl je wel vijf meter hoog dubbele salto’s uitvoert of op 15 meter aan één hand aan de straps hangt. Volgens je contract mag je ook geen extreme sporten doen. Ik ben een keer gaan skydiven en er waren foto’s op het internet terechtgekomen. Die moesten er direct af, en we zijn daarvoor op het matje geroepen. Ze hebben gewoon schrik dat je bijvoorbeeld je voet breekt en dan kost het handenvol geld en tijd om een vervanger op te leiden en kostuums te laten maken.”
Jasper: “Die vermaningen! Soms word je daar echt misselijk van. Het is gewoon een kleuterklas. Ze hebben een gans systeem van anciënniteit en berispingen en prijzen,
belachelijk. Ik had er zelf ook last van bij Zarkana. In Montreal moest ik helemaal geschoren zijn om mijn make-up te oefenen. Om te oefenen! Dat betekent dat je je make-up opdoet en terug af, zonder dat iemand dat ziet, maar ik moest toch geschoren zijn. Ik ging naar de les make-up met een stoppelbaard en ik mocht gewoonweg niet beginnen. Ze hebben mij een bic-scheermesje gegeven en zijn naast mij komen staan…”
Benjamin: “Ik heb nog nooit één berisping gehad, ik heb nog een blanco strafblad. Maar ik ben ook nog niet zo lang bezig. Veel hangt af van je artistic director. Bij Amaluna verloopt het nogal streng terwijl dat bij Mystère veel minder het geval was. Die voorstelling speelt al bijna 25 jaar dus dat draait wel.”
Anne-Agathe: “Je leeft bij Cirque du Soleil een beetje in een microkosmos. We hadden geen leven buiten het casino waar we optraden. Cirque du Soleil is de McDonalds van het circus, maar we werden bijzonder goed onthaald, de werkomstandigheden waren geweldig, en dat heb je volgens mij nergens anders. Een geweldige trainingszaal, kinesisten ter plaatse, fitnessmachines, … De kostuumverantwoordelijke wast je kostuum en brengt het terug voor de volgende voorstelling…”
Guy: “Je brengt zelf je maquillage aan en je speelt je nummer, maar dat is het dan ook. Je wordt in de watten gelegd.”
Benjamin: “Het is luxueus. Alles wordt voor je gedaan zodat je in optimale omstandigheden kan trainen en optreden. Dat houdt het technisch niveau ook hoog. Er hangt een soort circusschool-gevoel. Op tournee zijn er twee kinesisten mee. Ongeveer vijf uur voor de show zijn er sessies van een halfuur beschikbaar waar je kunt voor intekenen. Er komt wekelijks een masseur langs en er is in elke stad een externe Pilates-coach waar je privéles van kan krijgen. Het is luxe, maar voor je lichaam is het ook wel nodig.”
Anne-Agathe: “Ze organiseren ook regelmatig feestjes waarop iedereen uitgenodigd is, er zijn pizza-avonden, kleine attenties die heel veel helpen als je zes dagen op zeven met dezelfde mensen doorbrengt. Toen onze voorstelling afgelast werd hadden we tien dagen om het land te verlaten. Toen hebben ze heel veel mensen uit Montreal laten komen: psychologen, boekhouders, mensen die je hielpen met de praktische beslommeringen om terug te keren naar je land.”
Guy: “Er is wel een en ander veranderd sinds er in arena’s gespeeld wordt. Voordien was het logisch dat je met de chapiteau meereisde, Cirque du Soleil zorgde voor het vervoer en het logement van je gezin. Dat is bij die arena-tournees niet meer het geval. Het is een ganse puzzel om zo’n tournee te doen lukken met je gezin, er spelen dus enkel jonge gasten in.”
Benjamin: “Ze hebben ook het meereizende schooltje afgeschaft, nog voor de verkoop aan de Amerikaans-Chinese holding. Maar ze helpen wel om de visa te regelen voor de andere gezinsleden, ze mogen zonder surplus bij ons op de kamer en ze kunnen voor een klein bedrag ook ‘on site’ mee eten. Ze zijn absoluut welkom en ze mogen ook op alle feestjes komen, dus daar wordt wel voor gezorgd.”
Antonio: “Het fijne leven op tournee hing ook een beetje af van waar we waren. San Francisco: een hotel naast de zee, frisse lucht en met de fiets naar de tent. Ideaal. Minneapolis: hotel, shoppingcenter, chapiteau en daarrond in een straal van 10 kilometer… niks. Pijnlijk. Maar in Denver kon ik dan weer in de voormiddag kajakken en ‘s avonds spelen. Bij de arenatournees speel je elke week ergens anders, je speelt drie à vier keer, slaapt in het vliegtuig, … dat zou ik nooit gedaan hebben. Ons ritme was: twee maanden spelen, dan een week vrij, roadtrip en opnieuw twee maanden spelen. Dat vond ik wel ideaal. De ganse crew bestond uit ongeveer 120 mensen met technici en koks en zo inbegrepen, met ongeveer een 60-tal artiesten en muzikanten. In elke stad hadden we een première en een feest, het groepsgevoel was wel sterk – ze noemen het ook de Amaluna-family…”
Benjamin: “Dat is anders in Vegas: iedereen heeft daar zijn eigen huis en komt werken. Je hebt wel ‘vrienden van op het werk’ maar dat is toch anders dan wanneer je op tour bent met dezelfde groep mensen, ook omdat je dan op plaatsen komt waar je niet noodzakelijk de taal of de cultuur kent. Dat schept wel een band. De groep is ook groot genoeg om niet constant met dezelfde klootzakken opgescheept te zitten…”
Guy: “Voor de grote artiesten is Soleil eerder hun pensioen. Voordien doen ze de grote variétés en de grote gala’s. Wanneer ze zich met hun gezin willen vestigen, doen ze een vaste show in Vegas. Gemakkelijk, comfortabel, heel erg goed betaald, een goeie job.”
Het hoge speelritme en het technisch niveau van de acts eisen geregeld hun tol. En er heerst van in den beginne bij Cirque du Soleil een cultuur van snel inzetbare vervangers. The show must go on!
Benjamin: “Ik kende de bascule-act waarin ik moest vervangen heel goed, ik had die video al heel vaak gezien, want dat was de video waarmee we allemaal bascule hadden leren springen. Het moest snel gaan, dus ik ben niet langs Montreal gepasseerd, maar ik heb direct aangesloten bij de tournee in Mexico City. Je moet niet alleen de act leren maar eigenlijk de ganse show, waarin je ook nog andere cues moet doen. In zo’n basculeteam is een van de artiesten aangeduid als kapitein, die verdient ook wat meer, en het is zijn verantwoordelijkheid om jou die act te leren. Boven hem staat de coach die je ook wat kan helpen, en daarboven heb je de artistic director die je ook nog wat dingen kan zeggen.”
Antonio: “Wie in Montreal opgeleid wordt krijgt waarschijnlijk nog altijd onze video te zien. Maar het evolueert en dat is goed. Toen we er zelf nog speelden en we vonden iets nieuws, staken we dat er ook in. Het voelt niet zo vreemd dat onze act nog verder gespeeld wordt zonder ons, want het was ook niet 100% ons werk, we waren met zijn zessen. Het is wel jammer dat het niet beschreven staat dat het ons werk is, maar ik vind het wel tof om te weten voor mezelf dat die act nog altijd gespeeld wordt.”
Anne-Agathe: “Na de zwangerschap heb ik een van de jongleurs vervangen die al op voorhand had gemeld dat hij maximaal één jaar zou spelen. We hebben dat intern geregeld, ik moest alleen een pseudo-auditie doen zodat het duidelijk was dat ik het nummer kon spelen. En nadien een normale typische transitieperiode van zes weken. Die overgang werd erg goed begeleid. Gedurende drie weken leer je je maquillage en je kapsel. Je doet die elke dag, ook al ga je niet de scène op.”
Jasper: “Het zijn niet alleen de vervangingen. Ze hebben voor elk nummer en elke situatie in de voorstelling een back-up klaarstaan. Er zijn constant rotaties en constant voorstellingen waar artiesten elkaar vervangen. Het zit zo in elkaar dat als iemand geblesseerd is of ziek wordt, dat geen effect heeft. Dat kan vervelend zijn, er zijn daarom ook constant repetities en je bent eigenlijk nooit klaar.”
Antonio: “Toen mijn collega Kritonas werd vervangen, kon zijn vervanger niks met onze aanwijzingen. ‘Spring maar en doe wat onnozel erna.’ Hij maakte zijn sprong en stopte. ‘Daarna verplaats je je naar daar.’ ‘Maar hoe doe ik die verplaatsing?’ ‘Geen idee, schuif over de grond of zo.’ ‘Maar hoe schuif ik over de grond?’ Hij sprong probleemloos driedubbele salto’s en Millners, maar een verplaatsing van vier meter vrij over de grond, dat ging niet. In een circusschool leer je de techniek én het creëren, op een topsportschool niet.”
Jasper: “We hebben ons nummer gemaakt en ik heb jammer genoeg na twee weken in de voorstelling mijn been gebroken. Daarna ben ik vijf maanden in Montreal gebleven tot ik hersteld was en terug op niveau was gekomen. Op het eind van je revalidatie word je getraind tot je alle figuren kan die je deed voor je geblesseerd raakte. Door de Amerikaanse verzekering-toestanden hebben ze schrik dat je hen voor de rechtbank zal dagen als je iets van permanente schade hebt.”
Benjamin: “Ik doe mijn revalidatie hier in België en niet in Montreal. Ze hebben dat veranderd, omdat het kak is om 10-12 maanden aan een stuk in de residentie in Montreal te zitten. Ze hebben mij ook aangeraden om naar België te komen omdat de kwaliteit van de medische zorg, zeker op het vlak van kniespecialisten, waarschijnlijk beter was dan in Canada. Ik word ook nog betaald, door de verzekering dan, 75% van wat ik zou verdiend hebben. Via Skype heb ik contact met de medisch verantwoordelijke van Soleil en ook met een administratief medewerker die mogelijke problemen met de verzekering of de betalingen regelt. We zijn nu ook aan het bespreken om eventueel het laatste deel van de revalidatie in Montreal te doen. Ik heb hen gezegd dat ik – wanneer ik opnieuw begin te springen – wel met ervaren springers wil werken. Ze leiden daar immers ook vaak nieuwe acrobaten op. Het kan dus ook dat ze me na Montreal al op tournee sturen om te springen met het team.”
Wie eenmaal in het bestand van Cirque du Soleil zit, geraakt er niet meer uit. En wie er eenmaal goed gewerkt heeft mag zich aan een nieuw telefoontje verwachten. Hoe verleidelijk is het om er nog eens op in te gaan?
Guillermo: “Als het om een ander aanbod en andere voorwaarden gaat: zeker. Het contact met de mensen van Cirque du Soleil is goed gebleven. Ik heb even meegewerkt aan een kleiner jongleerproject voor Dubai. Ze zetten wel vaker kleine projecten op om te zien of het iets wordt.”
Anne-Agathe: “Mocht ik mijn eigen nummer hebben, dan zou ik het doen, denk ik.”
Guy: “Ik zou het om uiteenlopende redenen niet meer doen, maar het was een geweldige professionele ervaring. Ook wat het geld betreft: ik weet niet of we ooit nog ergens zo goed betaald zullen worden. Daarom ben ik ook wel blij dat het vanzelf gestopt is. Ik weet niet of we zelf neen hadden kunnen zeggen.”
Anne-Agathe: “We hebben ons ook wel die vraag gesteld: tekenen we nog een jaar bij of niet? ‘Offeren’ we onszelf nog een jaar op, want Macau is een vreselijke plek om te wonen… Je verdient zoveel geld dat je denkt: ‘Ik zou er wel nog een jaar kunnen werken.’”
Antonio: “Ze hebben mij nog vaak gebeld voor vervangingen in Amaluna, want om het half jaar valt daar wel iemand uit, maar ik was nooit vrij. Het is niet iets wat ik nu zelf opzoek, maar een paar maanden vervangen zou ik wel zien zitten. Een nieuwe creatie maken… dat hangt een beetje van de condities af.”Jasper: “Ze hebben me soms wel gevraagd, maar we waren
constant bezig met ons eigen ding. Soms is het wel verleidelijk. We werden gevraagd voor een voorstelling in Mexico, voor een soort dinnershow op maat van Soleil in een toeristische trekpleister, waarin ze artiesten kortere contracten van zes maand geven. En ook eens voor een special event om een zomer in Andorra te gaan spelen, maar de zomer is de periode waarin we echt op tournee zijn met onze eigen voorstelling, dus dat wilden we ook niet opgeven. Financieel was het misschien interessanter geweest, maar de ervaring om onze eigen voorstelling te spelen was belangrijker.”
Anne-Agathe: “Het was een ongelooflijke ervaring. Je leert er echt werken en je ziet wat een echte onderneming is. Je wordt zeker goed omkaderd, en het verandert hoe je de realiteit van het werk ziet. Toen een cabaret ons nadien wilde boeken voor 170 data en men ongerust werd of dat wel haalbaar was, zeiden wij: ‘Makkelijk, met de vingers in de neus.’ Maar… daar zorgde niemand voor onze kostuums, voor onze maquillage of onze aangiftes. Dus enkele maanden later realiseerden we ons hoe goed het bij Soleil op dat gebied georganiseerd is.”
Guy: “In ons beroep is geld zelden een argument, en het moment dat je als jongleur je geld kunt verdienen is speciaal. De realiteit van ons beroep is ook dat je nú je geld moet verdienen, je blijft het niet doen. Maar het is een realiteit die bestaat, het idee om een kleine reserve te hebben voor wanneer de carrière minder florissant loopt. Dus ik ben blij dat het afgelopen is, maar ik heb geen spijt dat ik het gedaan heb.”
Benjamin: “Ik doe het echt wel graag, ook al zie ik zeker het nadeel van artistiek niet je eigen shows te kunnen maken. Wat mij ook bevalt is de luxe en de zekerheid die je in het straattheater niet hebt, zeker nu ik jonge vader ben. Het bevalt mij er ook omdat ik zo graag bascule spring. Dat artistieke is zeker een deel van mij, maar ook wel het pure technische springen. Ik doe dat echt wel graag en bij Soleil kan dat, samen met andere gemotiveerde acrobaten. Het reizen ook… Bij toerende shows speel je meestal zes dagen per week, de laatste avond van de week feest je wat en op de vrije dag is er altijd wel iemand die iets organiseert: ‘Kom we gaan ziplinen in het oerwoud!’”
Antonio: “Ik zou nog wel terug kunnen gaan, maar het is niet mijn droomjob. Het is zeker tof om als artiest af en toe stabiel werk te hebben en wat geld te verdienen. Je kunt je artistieke projecten wat op een zijspoor zetten, maar er terwijl ook over nadenken. Dat hebben we toen ook gedaan, we hadden twee trainingen per week, maar op het eind waren we gewoon aan het oefenen voor ons eigen project.”
Een verwittigde circusartiest is er twee waard. Welke goeie raad moet er absoluut nog meegegeven worden aan de piepjonge circusartiesten die dromen van een carrière bij Cirque du Soleil?
Jasper: “Dat hangt ervan af wie het is. Sommige mensen zijn er echt voor gemaakt, andere absoluut niet. Tain, onze voltigeuse op de bar russe, was een gymnaste die ervan droomde om circus te doen. Ze wou dolgraag bij Cirque du Soleil werken, maar toen dat effectief lukte dacht ze al snel: ‘Ik ben nog altijd aan het turnen, ik heb gewoon veel make-up op mijn gezicht.’ Na een jaar is ze gestopt want het lag haar niet. En bij 15Feet6 is ze compleet open gebloeid op het podium.”
Benjamin: “Ik zou de raad geven om eerst een artistieke opleiding te volgen of je eigen ding te gaan doen, dan kun je het beter plaatsen en beleef je er ook meer plezier aan. Als ik de Oekraïense gymnasten zie die vanaf hun 16de bij Soleil spelen, echt gelukkig lijken die toch niet. Hun problemen zijn ook allemaal zo absurd. Die zijn echt wereldvreemd. Dat is het gevaar als je geen studententijd hebt gehad of nooit geprobeerd hebt om met vrienden iets op te bouwen.”
