Circuskornuiten aller landen, verenigt u! Ell Circo d’ell Fuego zorgt van 16 tot 18 april voor een extreme vrijstaat waar peper in de reet, buitelen, zweven, vliegen en springen over je eigen grenzen heen de enige regel is. Maarten Janssens en Arno Wauters vertellen waarom the sky the limit en de Extreme de springplank is.
“Voor de vierde editie verwachten we meer dan 700 acrobaten, jongleurs, turners, breakdancers, freerunners, artiesten, lesgevers, circusfreaks, … uit alle hoeken van de wereld,” steekt Arno Wauters van wal. “In de allereerste editie waren dat er zo’n 160,” vult Maarten Janssens aan. “We groeien niet alleen in cijfers qua deelnemers en vierkante meters Waagnatie die we inpalmen, ook op inhoudelijk, organisatorisch en professioneel vlak maken we grote sprongen. Wat er niet verandert, is de motivatie waarom we dit doen: in de filosofie van Ell Circo d’ell Fuego willen we aan iedereen de kans geven om kennis te maken met technieken die je weinig of niet ziet in de circusateliers. Op de Extreme kun je los gaan op bascule, Chinese mast, rhönrad, vliegende trapeze, grote trampoline, enzovoort. Door workshops van topniveau aan te bieden voor zowel beginners als gevorderden investeren we mee in de groei van de circuskunsten. We hopen ook op die manier de doorstroming naar de circushogescholen te verbeteren.”
Professionalisering van de circuskunst
Maar er is meer aan de hand met de Extreme Convention. In The Circus Space, de circushogeschool in Londen (zie p. 16, red.) zien we Matt Burch, de rigging verantwoordelijke, kinderlijk enthousiast de bascule bovenhalen bij een bezoek van de Fuego’s. Hij volgde vorig jaar op de Extreme een workshop bij Fabrice Berthet, pedagogisch directeur van Chatellerault. Hij nam afmetingen en maakte zelf een exemplaar, het teeterboard dat nu kleppert in The Circus Space. Fabrice Berthet werd na de Extreme op verschillende plekken uitgenodigd om les te geven.
Deze en vele andere verhalen tonen aan dat de Extreme Convention een belangrijke katalysator is in de professionalisering van de circuskunsten, ook op internationaal vlak. “Dat is juist het magische aan de Extreme,” legt Arno uit. “Het draait om ontmoeting en uitwisseling, de vonk die overspringt. De deelnemers zien en leren heel wat nieuwe dingen. Ze kunnen praten met leerlingen, artiesten, hogeschoolstudenten en lesgevers uit verschillende landen.”
Hoogvliegers van deze editie
Nieuw deze editie zijn de Masterclasses (13 tot 15 april), door onder andere wereldkampioen jongleren Vova Galchenko en de artiesten van het Canadese gezelschap Les 7 doigts de la main. “Het is natuurlijk fantastisch dat je de ene avond topartiesten aan het werk ziet tijdens de voorstelling en je er de andere dag les van krijgt. Maar bovenal zijn het heel goeie pedagogen. Bij het zien van een beweging kunnen ze in één oogopslag aanwijzen waar het schort, en het op een duidelijke, gevoelsmatige manier uitleggen hoe je het kan verbeteren. Dat maakt het verschil,” vertelt Arno.
Gekoppeld aan de Extreme Convention is er voor de deelnemers en het grote publiek het internationaal circusfestival ATLAS. Niet te missen hoogvliegers zijn Les 7 doigts de la main, de Cambodjaanse waaghalzen van Phare Ponleu Selpak Cirk, de première van Sweatshop Cie en last but not least, de Young Talent Night waar je aanstormend talent kan spotten.
Als toemaatje nog een streepje emo en animo. “Het is cliché, maar niet onbelangrijk: we willen oprecht alle vrijwilligers bedanken die met ons de Extreme mogelijk maken.” Ninja rol, salto, salto costal. Arno en Maarten af.
