Circusmagazine nodigt een circusartiest uit voor een goed gesprek met iemand die weinig of niks met circus te maken heeft maar die weleens veel te vertellen kan hebben. Onze gesprekspartners treffen elkaar op een warme zomerdag in een haast verlaten Circuscentrum. Aan één kant van de tafel de ‘leading lady’ van circusgezelschap Circ’ombelico. Aan de andere kant een actrice en gedreven theaterdocente. Iris Carta en Griet Dobbelaere voeren een enthousiast gesprek over eerlijke kleuters, vrouwen in de kunsten en manden om door te vallen.
Griet Dobbelaere: “Circ’ombelico, is dat jouw eigen gezelschap?”
Iris Carta: “Ik heb dat ooit opgericht met mijn ex-lief Jef (Naets, red.) en we hebben ook jaren samen getoerd. Zelfs toen we uit elkaar zijn gegaan, zijn we onze voorstelling Da/Fort blijven spelen. Die lag ons héél nauw aan het hart en was behoorlijk succesvol. We waren daar zo dankbaar voor dat we zeiden: ‘Kom, we blijven dat doen.’ Pas nadat dat avontuur was afgerond zijn we elk onze eigen weg gegaan. Jef is toen bij Circus Marcel gaan werken en ik bij Circus Ronaldo. Daarna kwamen er weer andere samenwerkingen op ons individueel pad.”
Griet: “En jij was als kind al met circus bezig?”
Iris: “Nee, totaal niet. In het middelbaar was ik dans en theater aan het doen en iedereen zei: ‘Doe maar conservatorium, dat is echt iets voor u.’ Maar ik was bang dat ik daar andere dingen ging missen, ik was ook echt graag met dat fysieke bezig. Ik ben ingangsexamen gaan doen in een hogere dansschool waar je een nummer op je rug moest hangen bij de auditie. Dat leek echt een soort vleeskeuring in mijn ogen, dat ging precies niet over mijn passie. Ik wist het niet goed, ik liep wat verloren en ik ben gaan reizen door Zuid-Amerika en ik ben allerlei cursussen beginnen volgen, van mandenvlechten tot snit en naad en heel veel dans, alles dooreen. Toen ik terugkwam van die reis heeft een vriendin me meegenomen naar de circusles in het toenmalige KayFou.”
Griet: “Dus daar is het begonnen…”
Iris: “Ik herinner mij dat moment nog, ik kwam die zaal binnen en ik zag iemand aan een trapeze hangen en er was een mat voor acrobatie en er stond iemand te jongleren. Voor mij was dat een openbaring. Jef is er op ongeveer dezelfde manier in getuimeld en we hebben mekaar daar zo wat gevonden. We hebben toen samen Circ’ombelico opgericht en zijn beginnen creëren. Heel erg autodidactisch allemaal.”
Griet: “Bij mij is het bijna tegenovergesteld gelopen. Ik heb als kind van mijn achtste tot mijn achttiende ateliers gevolgd bij Kopergietery. Dat was het enige dat ik wou doen… spelen! Daarna heb ik een behoorlijk klassiek parcours gevolgd met een vierjarige theateropleiding aan het Kask, dat toen nog conservatorium heette. Het had ook nog niet de faam had die het nu heeft. Nu is dat ‘de beste school van Vlaanderen’ als je theater wil doen. We zaten in een heel toffe klas, maar alles leek zo ernstig en zo saai nadat ik zo lang bij Kopergietery had mogen spelen. Ik heb die opleiding van vier jaar afgewerkt en toen ik afstudeerde was ik eenentwintig en nog heel naïef. Ik heb alle mogelijke opdrachten aangenomen, ik zei op alles ‘ja’ want ik had geen idee van wat ik wou of niet wou. Ik heb daardoor ook wel een paar fouten gemaakt en keuzes die ik nu niet meer zou maken, maar ik ben tegelijk ook altijd bij Kopergietery betrokken gebleven. Daardoor kon ik in dat artistieke bad blijven, naast alle rare keuzes die ik maakte.”
Iris: “Het was daar een beetje thuiskomen?”
Griet: “Ja, absoluut. Ik ben er nu coördinator van de jongerenateliers. Op een of andere manier zijn jongeren en kinderen essentieel voor mij in het maken en het spelen. Het is niet echt een keuze geweest, meer iets dat op mijn pad is gekomen. Ik zit al heel mijn leven in dat jeugdtheater, ik doe dat supergraag.”
Iris: “Met onze allereerste voorstelling hebben we veel voor kleuters gespeeld. Dat was eigenlijk een zalig publiek. Je weet snel of je voorstelling werkt of niet…”
Griet: “Ik ben daar ook zo fan van, omdat dat zo’n helder publiek is. Of ze vinden het de max, of ze vinden het maar niks. Kinderen voelen ook of ze ernstig genomen worden of niet.”
Iris: “Wij kregen vaak de reactie: ‘Amai, jullie doen wel veel moeite voor die kleine dreumesen, is dat wel nodig?’ Maar we hebben alle acrobatische figuren, onze handstanden en salto’s erin gehouden. Dat hoort er toch gewoon bij! De grap is eigenlijk: ik was niet zo’n fan van kinderen, het was in ieder geval niet mijn favoriete doelpubliek. In het circus is het trouwens een frustratie van veel artiesten dat wat we doen nog altijd beschouwd wordt als ‘iets voor de kindjes op zondagmiddag met ballonnen en popcorn.’ Niks op tegen, maar dat is niet per definitie wat wij doen.”
Griet: “Ik heb het gevoel dat de circuswereld zichzelf op de kaart aan het zetten is en dat het beeld van die tent en de obligate olifant aan het verdwijnen is. Maar laat ons vooral oppassen voor het cliché: we zijn twee vrouwen en we zijn al voortdurend aan het praten over spelen voor kinderen. Heb jij het gevoel dat je als vrouw ernstig wordt genomen in het circus, of voel je een verschil?”
Iris: “Ik voel soms wel dat ik als vrouw minder serieus word genomen. Ik heb het echt al meegemaakt dat een programmator mij begon uit te leggen hoe moeilijk het wel niet was om met een tent te toeren en met die camions op de baan te gaan. Maar ik heb dat jaren gedaan! Een klassiek voorbeeld van mansplaining. Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat datzelfde gesprek met een mannelijke collega op dezelfde manier zou zijn verlopen. Ik weet ook wel dat ik maar één meter vijfenzestig ben, geen superbrede kas heb en dat ik die tent niet alleen recht zal krijgen. Dat weet ik wel, maar wie zegt dat een vrouw heel dat project niet kan trekken en geen bekwame technici kan vinden om daarbij te helpen.”
Griet: “Omdat je een vrouw bent heb je onmiddellijk al iets te verdedigen.”
Iris: “Ik begeef me nu wat op glad ijs, maar ik heb persoonlijk ook wel iets tegen die #metoo-beweging in te brengen. Ik vind het heel belangrijk dat vrouwen durven opkomen voor hun rechten en dat de waarheid naar de oppervlakte komt. Maar het gevaar zit erin om in een soort slachtofferrol te vervallen en in een soort haatboodschap naar mannen toe.”
Griet: “Het gaat volgens mij ook meer over machtsposities dan over de strijd van mannen tegen vrouwen.”
Iris: “Klopt, maar dat wordt heel vaak anders gezien.”
Griet: “Het is ook historisch zo gegroeid. Mannen waren in de geschiedenis gewoon heel vaak aan de macht, dus als een machtspositie misbruikt werd, was dat vaak door een man. Ik heb het veel moeilijker met misbruik van een machtspositie dan met ‘de man’. Mannen zijn superheerlijk.”
Iris: (enthousiast) “Jaaa! Absoluut!”
Griet: “Dat er mannen zijn op de wereld maakt het leven fantastisch. Twee jaar geleden heb ik samen met comedian Han Coucke een voorstelling gemaakt: Han en Grietje. We zijn een soort comedyduo, compleet buiten mijn comfortzone. Ik heb intussen al 100 keer gehoord: ‘Tof dat jij grappig bent, want vrouwen zijn in feite niet grappig.’ Ik word daar zo kwaad om.”
Iris: “Grappig zijn is niet van nature een mannelijke eigenschap. Je kunt als mens grappig zijn of niet. Ik denk wel dat bepaalde dingen op een energetisch niveau mannelijk of vrouwelijk kunnen zijn. Dat er zoiets bestaat als mannelijke en vrouwelijke kwaliteiten, die je niet noodzakelijk koppelt aan een man of een vrouw. Met name die vrouwelijke kwaliteiten worden niet altijd gewaardeerd. Ik heb het meegemaakt met een Franse potentiële coproducent. Hij wou uiteindelijk niet meestappen in mijn project omdat het ‘Wat te emotioneel, te romantisch was.’ Dat denigrerende toontje in zijn stem toen hij dat zei… Ik denk dat mannen in die positie – niet mannen in het algemeen – liever willen weten: ‘Wat zal het nu zijn? Zal het 50 minuten duren of anderhalf uur? Komt er nu een handstand in of niet? En gaat het verhaal in een rechte lijn van A naar Z?’ Ik had blijkbaar iets op papier gezet dat niet feitelijk genoeg was. Wat ik wil maken is heel erg organisch, ook het creatieproces. Dat betekent ook telkens in het moment dingen heruitvinden, want ik wil dat het telkens weer kwetsbaar is. Dat is dan ineens blijkbaar emotioneel en romantisch.”
Griet: “Heel de #metoo-beweging gaat er natuurlijk ook over dat je je seksualiteit hebt moeten inzetten om een job te krijgen. Ik las onlangs een interview met een Vlaamse actrice die zei: ‘Ik vind het heel raar dat vrouwen dat vertellen, want ik heb zoiets nog nooit gezien.’ Ik vind het heel raar en naïef om dat te zeggen. Ik kan zelf meer dan genoeg voorbeelden geven. Ik was 27 en ik zat in de laatste audities voor een hoofdrol in een serie. Dat zeiden ze mij toch. De producer zei op een gegeven moment tegen mij: ‘Voor de laatste ronde mag je nog eens terugkomen en ik stel voor dat je die scène dan doet zonder onderbroek, je zult voelen dat je dan beter gaat spelen.’ Ik weet nog dat ik dacht: ‘Hij heeft waarschijnlijk gelijk…’ Om maar te zeggen dat je als jonge actrice soms zo graag een rol wil. Ik heb het uiteindelijk ook gedaan, maar hoe walgelijk is het niet dat je naïeve meisjes en vrouwen dat laat doen. Daar kan ik met mijn hoofd niet bij.”
Iris: “Ik kan nog wel begrijpen dat je dat op een gegeven moment wil zien, die kwetsbaarheid. Ook als je met lichamen werkt en je zoekt puurheid of zo…”
Griet: “Maar dat gaat over esthetiek, da’s nog iets anders. En het is helaas vaak onder het mom van esthetiek dat zo’n dingen gebeuren. Als je dan nog te jong of te naïef bent, ben je een vogel voor de kat.”
Iris: “Sommige meisjes of vrouwen beseffen niet dat zoiets aan het spelen is, maar mannen zouden ook moeten leren om daar verantwoordelijkheid in te dragen. Dat die daar ook niet naïef in zijn en denken ‘Dat doet er toch niet toe, ik mag toch vragen om haar onderbroek uit te doen.’ Nee! Besef eens wat er speelt.”
Griet: “En besef dat die speler op dat moment volledig ten dienste staat van jouw vraag. Dat alleen al vraagt tomeloos respect en niet net het tegenovergestelde.”
Iris: “Ik had er onlangs een discussie over met een mannelijke collega. Hij vond dat mannen en vrouwen in het circus perfect gelijkwaardig zijn, want we hebben vrouwen met ongelooflijke spierballen die tenten mee opbouwen en mannen die met plezier in een maillot kruipen. Volgens hem vormen circusartiesten een hechte familie, en hij voelt die machtsdynamiek tussen mannen en vrouwen niet. Ik snap hem ergens wel, maar voor mij blijft het circus heel erg een mannenwereld. Omdat er meer mannen dan vrouwen aan circus doen, denk ik, maar ook omdat de energie van circus heel mannelijk aanvoelt: spieren, kracht, uitdaging, tenten rechtzetten, overleven, reizen, trekken, doen…”
Griet: “Ik denk wel dat theater, en zeker jeugdtheater, vrouwelijker is. In letterlijke zin: er werken bij Kopergietery of bij Bronks veel meer vrouwen dan mannen.”
Iris: “Heeft dat te maken met het stereotype: vrouwen-dus-moeders-dus-werken-met-kinderen?”
Griet: “Ik word daar inderdaad wel een beetje lastig van. Veel van ons zijn effectief moeders, maar dat betekent niet dat wij niet superveel en keihard en soms ook heel laat werken. We hebben natuurlijk affiniteit met jongeren en kinderen, maar is dat dan vrouwelijk? Ik vind dat zever. We waren bewust ook echt op zoek naar nog wat meer mannelijke docenten, want ik vind het belangrijk dat daar een evenwicht in zit, al is het maar dat die jongeren en kinderen met heel veel verschillende soorten mensen te maken krijgen. Voor veel mannelijke docenten in het theater, en waarschijnlijk in het circus ook, is het wel niet altijd makkelijk. Er zijn dingen die ik als vrouwelijke docente kan doen met jongeren, die voor een man veel moeilijker liggen. Als een zestienjarige begint te huilen tijdens een atelier en die heeft echt een goeie knuffel nodig, dat is als man echt niet meer zo evident. Dat is ook wel iets dat #metoo heeft opgeleverd, natuurlijk. Dat die angst er is. En angst is wat de wereld naar de kloten helpt.”
Iris: “Speelt angst in jouw maakproces een belangrijke rol?”
Griet: “In de zin dat ik bang ben om iets te maken?”
Iris: “Ja, of dat je al veel angsten hebt moeten doorstaan als maker?”
Griet: “Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat een creatieproces moeilijk mag zijn. Bij mij zit daar altijd wat faalangst in. Maar ik vrees dat je door al die emoties moet om iets te maken dat mooi is. Het verlamt mij niet, maar ik heb het wel bij elk proces. Ik denk iedere keer: ‘Waarom doe ik dit, ik kan dit niet en ik vind dit niet leuk.’ Ik denk intussen al 20 jaar dat ik door de mand ga vallen en dat iedereen zal zien dat ik het eigenlijk niet kan.”
Iris: “Het is elke keer weer in de spiegel durven kijken.”
Griet: “Ja. En de moed hebben om alles in vraag te blijven stellen. De dag dat je dat niet meer doet, kun je beter stoppen. Ik geloof niet dat je dan nog iets vernieuwends kunt brengen. Dan maak je voortdurend dezelfde dingen, wat niet erg is, maar dat is niet wat ik wil.”
Iris: “Ik denk wel dat die angstfase kan passeren, want angst gaat heel erg over jezelf. Ik voel dat er een verschuiving is in mijn manier van maken. Toen ik jonger was kwam dat veel meer vanuit het gevoel dat ik iets te bewijzen had. Dat is hoe langer hoe meer aan het wegebben en het gaat nu meer richting dienstbaarheid. Ik ben daar nog lang niet, ik heb ook nog fases van angst en twijfelen aan mezelf, maar er zijn wel momenten dat ik dat aanraak. Heel zuiver dat gevoel van: het gaat niet meer over mij maar…”
Griet: “… over wat ik wil vertellen. Dat is mooi. En dan is het gewoon de kunst om je te omringen met mensen die je keihard vertrouwt. Dat is zo belangrijk. Het is al zo’n moeilijke wereld en je bent al zo kwetsbaar om je ding te doen voor een publiek dat dan ook nog eens gaat zeggen wat ze ervan vinden.”
Iris: “… of over dat wat verteld kán en mág worden. Het gaat over diep luisteren naar wat zich aandient. Wat vertrouwen en veiligheid vraagt. Dat lijkt een evidentie, maar het is toch wel nog altijd typisch voor het oude theatermilieu, en ook in de danswereld: die gewoonte van tough love. Iemand eens goed afbreken, en dan gaan we resultaten boeken!”
Griet: “Dat is zo flauw.”
Iris: “Een bevriende danseres vertelde mij dat het nog altijd bestaat. Choreografen die je afkraken omwille van de techniek, of omdat je niet genoeg persoonlijkheid hebt, en die komen dan zo wat brullen of je wat afjakkeren om te zien of je het wel kunt volhouden.”
Griet: “Dat zal misschien wel werken, maar dat is totaal niet mijn visie.”
Iris: “Ik geloof daar ook totaal niet in, maar ik vind het wel interessant dat dat stereotype blijft. Het idee van: om diep te gaan als kunstenaar, of om authentiek te zijn, moet je hebben afgezien.”
Griet: “Je kunt als coach ook net kijken naar wat er goed is en wat je ermee kan doen, dat lijkt mij de juiste manier van werken.”
Iris: “En dat betekent niet dat je enkel zeemzoet in fluistertaal moet praten, en dat je elkaar niet mag uitdagen door iets confronterend te zeggen. Maar dat kan ook op een constructieve manier.”
Griet: “Mij maakt het eigenlijk niet uit wat voor projecten ik in de toekomst nog ga doen, als ik mij maar kan omringen met mensen die ik zelf goed vind en die eerlijk zijn, die oprecht zijn, waarbij ik me op mijn gemak voel en waarmee we samen iets megacool kunnen maken.”
Iris: “Voor mijn nieuwe project ben ik niet begonnen met wie ik wil werken. Ik heb eerst nagedacht over wat ik wil maken en daarna pas over de mensen met wie ik dat wil doen. Maar ik werk sowieso met horizontaal leiderschap. Ik zie er het nut niet van in dat ik maar wat sta te commanderen, want dat haalt mensen uit hun verantwoordelijkheid. Ik wil dat doorprikken en werken met mensen die hun plan kunnen en durven trekken, ook als ik de verantwoordelijkheid voor het hele project draag. Als ik met mensen samenwerk die ik vertrouw en waar ik mij veilig bij voel dan heb ik altijd het gevoel dat dat zingeving genereert en dat ik groei als mens.”
Griet: “Ik ook, al ben ik me daar nog maar de laatste jaren van bewust. Ik vraag me ook vaker af: ‘Hoe ontwikkel ik me en kan ik me met mijn talent en dienstbaarheid verhouden tot een project.’ Dat hoeft ook zelfs niet een eigen project te zijn.”
Iris: “Waar ben je nu mee bezig?”
Griet: “Morgen vertrek ik naar Palestina, ik ga met Victoria Deluxe en Kopergietery een inleefreis maken met jongeren, om er daarna een voorstelling over te maken. Ik ga die artistiek coachen.”
Iris: “En wat houdt dat dan in?”
Griet: “Ik bewaak in zekere zin iedereen die in dat proces of project zit, zowel artistiek als emotioneel. Ik probeer dat project ook vooruit te duwen, het is moeilijk te omschrijven. Ik ga ook om wc-papier als het op is, omdat ik vind dat dat er ook bij hoort, maar als de voorstelling gemaakt wordt zeg ik ook: ‘Deze scène klopt nog niet, we moeten die misschien aanpassen.’ En als één van de jongeren ongelukkig is zie ik dat sneller want ik ben daar nogal gevoelig voor, dus dan kan ik ook daar helpen. Het is alles en niks tegelijk.”
Iris: “Je mag er mee induiken, maar je hebt nog wat speelruimte om er buiten te blijven staan. Is de valies al gemaakt? Of ben je meer een last-minute-mens?”
Griet: “Ja, maar dat werkt het best voor mij.”
Iris: “Ook in je maakproces? Werk jij heel hard vanuit het hier en nu?”
Griet: “Ik heb geen strategie, alles komt bij mij vanuit een soort intuïtie. Dat klinkt nu misschien wat onnozel, want er zitten daar wel systemen in, en een methodiek, maar ik kan die niet altijd goed uitleggen. Maar ik geloof wel in mijn intuïtie.”
Iris: “Die vraag naar mijn werkproces zorgt altijd voor wat onzekerheid bij mij. Ik heb dus echt geen systeem.”
Griet: “Net als ik die altijd denk dat ik door de mand ga vallen.”
Iris: “Ik ga hier op een dag betrapt worden dat ik totaal geen benul heb van wat ik aan het doen ben. Want dat gebeurt allemaal in het moment…”
Griet: “… en toevallig. Ik denk altijd dat het supertoevallig is dat iets lukt.”
Iris: “Dat is niet zo! (lacht) Maar zo lijkt het soms wel, zeker op de donkerste dagen als je het allemaal niet meer ziet zitten. Dan denk ik aan de grote makers of de mensen die al heel veel erkenning hebben gekregen. Dan denk ik: ‘Die weten het! Die hebben een boekske! Die hebben een handleiding en ik heb die niet! Ik moet dringend een handleiding schrijven!’”
Griet: “Ik heb ooit een interview gelezen met Johan Simons, toen die echt dé grote theaterregisseur was. Hij zei net hetzelfde: ‘Iedere keer opnieuw lig ik in mijn bed en denk ik: maar waarom doe ik dit eigenlijk?’ Dan ben ik gerustgesteld. Ik denk dat nieuwsgierigheid eigenlijk de motor is voor alles als je iets wil maken.”
Iris: “Ja! Nieuwsgierigheid op zijn best betekent: een open geest hebben en een soort van alertheid behouden om telkens weer te kijken wat er zich op dit eigenste moment aandient.”
