Elke vakman spreekt zijn eigen taal. En omdat het circus een bonte verzameling vaklui is, stelt CircusMagazine een lexicon op. Specialisten uit het domein vertellen over hun beroep, wij destilleren een woordenboek met de opvallendste gemene delers of juist de scherpste tegenstellingen, en zoeken zo in één beweging naar het wezen van circus. Mocht main-à-main of andere partneracrobatie niet zo verdomd moeilijk zijn, het zou een probate therapie zijn voor elk huwelijk in crisis. De hechte band die de twee acrobaten moeten ontwikkelen – nota bene voor ons vertier – is een les in samenleven. Ze kennen immers beter dan wie ook elkaars lichaam, karakter, angsten en ideeën. Ze worden er quasi dagelijks mee geconfronteerd op hun trainingen, repetities en optredens. Niet zelden zijn dat levensbedreigende omstandigheden, want voor het publiek mag het steeds gevaarlijker. Een main-à-main-duo bestaat enerzijds uit de drager, hij die zijn partner gooit en vangt, en anderzijds uit de vlieger, een lichtgewicht die de stunts in de lucht uitvoert. Beide kunnen zowel door vrouwen als door mannen uitgevoerd worden.
Aantrekken en afstoten
Het is een beetje een cliché dat main-à-main-acts gaan over ‘aantrekken en afstoten’, zoals geregeld in programmaboekjes staat. Maar het gegeven zit in de acrobatie zelf en je kan je er niet van afkeren (lvdb). Toch is het zinvol om te proberen zo veel als mogelijk van dat conventionele idee weg te gaan bij het maken van je nummer (jg).
Acrogym
De sportvariant van main-à-main, waarin duo’s, trio’s of kwartetten het tegen elkaar opnemen in choreografieën op muziek die elementen van dans, turnen en acrobatie combineren (ap).
Afhankelijk
Geraakt je partner geblesseerd, of zet hij een punt achter de samenwerking, dan val je enige tijd zonder werk. Iets om over na te denken voor je dit beroep kiest (ap).
Angst
De vlieger moet elke dag opnieuw leren omgaan met angst en de grenzen daarvan opzoeken en verleggen (ze).
Banquine
Een andere tak in de partneracrobatie, waarbij twee dragers een lanceerplatform voor de vlieger maken met hun gekruiste armen (ap). Een voordeel van banquine is dat er iets meer tijd is om te kijken en te denken, terwijl de drager van een main-à-main-duo meer zal moeten voelen en vertrouwen op reflexen (lvdb).
Cascade
De vlieger staat met de voeten in de handen van de drager, wordt recht omhoog gegooid, maakt een halve voorwaartse draai en maakt zodoende een handstand in de handen van de drager. De omgekeerde beweging wordt een courbette genoemd (lvdb).
Compromis
Het aantal compromissen dat een duo moet maken gaat ver: over de techniek, over de artistieke aanpak, over welke speelopdrachten je aanneemt enzovoort. Er wordt zelfs afgesproken waar je gaat wonen zodat je nog samen kunt trainen (ze).
Dans
In hun act zullen acrobatenkoppels geregeld danselementen integreren om hun trucs in te kaderen. En hoewel het in beide disciplines gaat om expressie via lichaamsbeweging, lijkt main-à-main meer controle uit te stralen en dans meer vrijheid (lvdb). Die controle, die de drager ervaart als hij de vlieger tilt, is het meest geweldige gevoel (bva).
Entrée directe (of potcheska)
De vlieger staat op de grond voor de drager, ze houden elkaars handen vast. De vlieger springt recht omhoog en draait zijn lichaam om in de sprong. Hij eindigt in handstand in de handen van de drager (lvdb).
Explosie
Hoewel uithoudingsvermogen heel belangrijk is voor acrobaten – bij sommigen is lopen, fietsen of zwemmen een vast onderdeel van de training (bva) – is de krachtinspanning bij main-à-main doorgaans van een korte, explosieve energie, eerder te vergelijken met een sprint dan met een duurloop (lvdb).
Handstand
Is één van de belangrijkste oefeningen voor zowel drager als vlieger, en kan het best in de dagelijkse lichaamsopwarming opgenomen worden (bva). Door handstand te oefenen voelt de drager bijvoorbeeld hoe het is om een lichaam op zijn handen te dragen (lvdb). De vlieger van zijn kant zal merken dat een handstand in de handen van de drager anders voelt dan op de grond. Hij zal meer beroep moeten doen op zijn sterk ontwikkelde schouderspieren (bva).
Icarus
De icarische spelen zijn een neventak van de partneracrobatie, waarbij de drager op zijn rug ligt en met zijn voeten de vlieger draagt (ap).
Kostuum
Er zijn aardig wat restricties aan de kostuums die een duo mag dragen: het moet beweegbaar zijn maar niet los, de vlieger draagt liever geen wapperende rokjes die het zicht van de drager belemmeren, de knopen op het hemd van de drager kunnen pijn doen en noem maar op (ze).
Kracht
Is bij main-à-main dubbel uit te leggen, net als flexibiliteit. Het belang van fysieke kracht spreekt voor zich. De drager zal vaker trainen met gewichten, de vlieger op de trampoline (ap). Mentale kracht heeft de vlieger dan weer nodig om op te boksen tegen de drager (ze). En andersom (lvdb).
Landen
De vlieger streeft er best naar om op de handen van zijn partner te landen zoals hij zou doen op de grond. Dus niet neerstorten als een kamikaze. Dat is minder vanzelfsprekend dan het lijkt (ap).
Licht
Een intelligente afstelling van het theaterlicht is van levensbelang voor het welslagen van een main-à-main-nummer (bva). Een drager die verblind wordt door het felle licht riskeert zijn vlieger te laten vallen. Het lichtplan moet dus bij elk optreden goed gecontroleerd worden (ze).
Longe
Soms wordt de vlieger bij het repeteren gezekerd via een gordel om het lijf, de zogenaamde longe of ‘rig’ (zie CircusMagazine #51). Een derde persoon, de ‘longeur’, houdt de touwen vast en voorkomt valpartijen (ze).
Magnesium
Het witte poeder dat sommige acrobatenduo’s op hun handen doen om minder weg te glijden bij de uitvoering van hun trucs (ze).
Relatie
Het komt net te vaak voor om van een uitzondering te spreken: verschillende main-à-main-duo’s worden op den duur koppels. Al vinden sommige duo’s dat hun relatie meer lijkt op die van een broer en een zus: soms vecht je tegen elkaar, soms lach je samen (jg).
Routine
In functie van de veiligheid van de vlieger is het belangrijk dat de acrobatische handelingen in een nummer erg geroutineerd zijn door dagelijkse herhaling. Deel van die routine is het trainen van het tempo van de handelingen, wat de ‘muzikaliteit’ van de act bepaalt (lvdb).
Rusland
In de Russische school, gelegen in Kiev dat toentertijd bij Rusland hoorde, moet de vlieger 20 à 30 kilo minder wegen dan de drager. Bij het opvangen van de vlieger staan de benen van de drager achter elkaar. Ook in Europa wordt de Russische techniek toegepast, zij het minder strikt. Sommige Europese circusscholen volgen dan weer liever de methodiek van de Hongaarse specialist Geza Trager, waarbij de benen van de drager naast elkaar staan bij het opvangen van de vlieger (lvdb).
Statisch
Een statisch duo zal meer inzetten op de figuren die de vlieger maakt op de voeten, handen of het hoofd van de drager, waarbij evenwicht primeert boven actie. Een dynamisch duo maakt meer gebruik van het kunst- en vliegwerk. Ideaal is wanneer beide technieken versmelten tot één gevarieerde act (ap).
Techniek
De creatie van een nieuw acrobatienummer begint bij het verkennen van nieuwe technieken en ermee te improviseren. De volgende stap is om die techniek in dialoog te laten gaan met andere kunstvormen, en zodoende ook met andere mensen (jg). Om hierin echt vooruitgang te maken is een rustpauze van een week eigenlijk te lang (bva).
Tendinitis
Peesontsteking, het risico van elke acrobaat (ze).
Vertrouwen
De verantwoordelijkheid die de drager heeft ten opzichte van de vlieger is verpletterend. De vlieger moet blind vertrouwen hebben in de drager en open communiceren over alles, geen frustraties opkroppen (ze). In main-à-main wordt in de regel geen toestel gebruikt. Als het misloopt ligt het altijd aan een menselijke fout. Het is verleidelijk om de schuld bij de ander te leggen, een gevoel waar soms tegen gevochten moet worden (ap).
Voeding
Een terugkerend mopje onder acrobaten is dat dragers altijd vlees en pasta eten, en vliegers altijd sla. Het gewicht van de vlieger is inderdaad het best licht en stabiel, want een kilo meer of minder kan het voor de drager veel moeilijker maken (lvdb). De drager hoopt ook altijd om de helft van het bord van de vlieger te mogen eten (ze).
Vormspanning
Het opgespannen lichaam of de zogenaamde ‘plankjes’, is naast handstand de belangrijkste basisoefening van zowel drager als vlieger (bva).
