André De Poorter heeft een hart voor circus en een hart voor geschiedenis. Combineer beide en je krijgt het meest uitgebreide en doordachte circusarchief van Vlaanderen. Vandaag gaat André dieper in op een fenomeen van voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog: de houten circusconstructies. Meest succesvolle ondernemer uit die tijd: August Bovyn.
In de beginperiode van het circus, aanvang negentiende eeuw, maakten de reizende gezelschappen voor hun voorstellingen veelal gebruik van overdekte stedelijke maneges, rijscholen of theaters. Ofwel lieten ze een houten omheining optrekken waartegen overdekte tribunes werden gebouwd. Alleen het publiek zat in het droge.
Omstreeks 1825 verschenen hier de eerste echte gesloten tenten. Deze waren van hout en bedekt met zeildoek. Zo kon men bij om het even welke weersomstandigheid optredens verzorgen. Ze werden opgetrokken door de uitbaters zelf en waren meestal van bescheiden omvang. Men noemde ze halfconstructies of kiosken. Dit type tent, enigszins van uitzicht te vergelijken met de spiegeltent, verdween definitief in de jaren vijftig van vorige eeuw, met uitzondering van Circus Jhony dat de traditie nog een tijdje in ere hield.
Houten gebouwen
Grote circusondernemingen lieten veelal een houtbouw optrekken door gespecialiseerde timmerlieden. Deze hoge, ronde met planken en panelen ineen getimmerde gebouwen met een stevig geraamte, waren niet echt mooi. Ze hadden meestal een diameter van 30-35 meter. Het dak was bedekt met asfaltpapier of zink. Ze werden constructies genoemd en bleven meestal een paar maanden staan om daarna weer afgebroken te worden. Alles werd dan in een loods opgeslagen om het jaar erop opnieuw te kunnen dienen.
Om zo een bouwwerk te laten optrekken zochten de circusuitbaters aanvankelijk timmerlieden van de streek. In 1834 werd in Gent het Circus Loisset opgetrokken door de lokale timmerman Bonnet, en in 1861 het Circus Wollschläger door M. Rierru ‘maître charmentier à Gand’. Tussen 1869 en 1873 mocht ondernemer Campy een houten circus optrekken in Leuven. Naert was in 1873 de bouwer van een constructie in Brugge en Circus Corty deed in 1880 in Antwerpen beroep op schrijnwerker Lambrecht-Scheepers.
Stilaan waren er ondernemers die zich gingen specialiseren in het bouwen van dergelijke houten circussen. De eerste was August De Waele. Hij installeerde vanaf 1877 verschillende jaren na elkaar een circus op het Gentse Sint-Pietersplein. Na de foor van 1880 vroeg hij aan het stadbestuur of zijn constructie, waarin plaats was voor 3000 mensen, niet zou mogen blijven staan tot na de foor van het volgende jaar en dat in verband met het gebruik ervan voor de viering van 50 jaar Belgische Onafhankelijkheid. De overheid ging er niet op in en liet weten dat het plein vijftien dagen na de kermis moest ledig zijn. Na een paar jaar ging De Waele korte tijd samenwerken met August Bovyn en samen bouwden ze in 1882 onder meer circussen in Gent en Antwerpen. Een jaar later had De Waele een nieuwe partner, G. Diegerick.
Succesverhaal
In 1883 begon het succesverhaal van August Bovyn, die van dan af zelfstandig ondernemer werd met als enige bezigheid het bouwen van circussen. Hij werd geboren in Strijpen (Zottegem) op 26 september 1840. Als ‘entrepreneur’ vestigde hij zich eerst in Gent, later in Brussel. Dikwijls had hij een tijdelijk adres in de stad waar zijn mensen aan het werk waren.
Op het Gentse Sint-Pietersplein, langs de kant van de Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat, pronkte Bovyns tijdelijk circus ieder jaar tijdens de Halfvastenfoor. Daarvoor had hij een meerjarencontract afgesloten met de stad. Hij zocht dan zelf een huurder. Zo sloot hij overeenkomsten met circussen als Carré, Continental, Plège, Diter, Gatti, Corty-Althoff, Lenka, Lockhart, Alegria, Wulff, Beketow, Dekock en Maximilian. In 1895 vond hij geen huurder voor zijn constructie, want geen enkel circus durfde het opnemen tegen het befaamde Circus Wulff die in het pas geopende Nieuw Circus optrad en Circus Lenka dat in het nabijgelegen Hippodroom speelde. Hij stak dan maar zelf een programma ineen, bestaande uit een mengeling van variété en circus en zonder dieren in de piste.
Bovyn die ook opdrachten kreeg in Rotterdam, verkreeg daar in 1891 een vergunning van vijf jaar voor het optrekken van een stenen renbaan op een terrein van de stad. Op een gemetselde fundering verrees in hetzelfde voorjaar op korte tijd een gebouw in vakwerk met stenen muren en met een dakbedekking van asfaltpapier. Er werden verschillende uitgangen en trappen aangebracht om brandgevaar tot een minimum terug te brengen. Daarnaast was een stal met ruimte voor honderd paarden, kleedkamers voor de artiesten en magazijnen. Dit ‘Groot Circus Bovyn’ ontving er de circussen Althoff, Lenka en Pierantoni. Er werden ook bals gehouden. Na 1893 vonden we geen enkele persvermelding meer over dit circus.
In Brussel liet Bovyn jaarlijks in het najaar een constructie optrekken van 35 meter diameter. Soms speelden er twee circussen na elkaar. In Luik verrees zijn circus telkens tijdens de foor op de ‘Place St-Paul’. Dat duurde tot 1905, toen midden op het plein het Monument Delcour werd opgericht. Hij trok ook met zijn timmerlieden naar Namen en Antwerpen. In 1899 had hij in de Scheldestad wel tegenslag toen zijn houtbouw aan de Amerikalei en waarin Circus Rodolfo Guillaume toen speelde, afbrandde. Op een halfuur lag heel het gebouw in puin. Een naburige kermisattractie en ook huizen in de buurt werden getroffen. Bovyns gebouw was wel verzekerd.
In Charleroi bekeek onze circusbouwer de zaken anders. Daar werd jaarlijks tijdens de kermis een houtbouw opgetrokken op de ‘Place du Manège’. Daar rechtover opende Bovyn in 1902 een vast circus, waarvan hij de bouwer en eigenaar was. De directie liet hij over aan een vakman. Naast circusvoorstellingen kon men er ook van variétéspektakels genieten. In 1912 verkocht hij dit circusgebouw, met stallen, ingangen en twaalf handelszaken aan een houthandelaar uit Sint-Jans-Molenbeek voor 360.000 frank. Op de plaats van dit stenen circus verrees in 1957 het Palais des Beaux Arts.
Internationale reputatie
Als ‘Entrepreneur Constructeur de Cirques’ kende Bovyn een internationale reputatie met opdrachten niet alleen in eigen land maar ook in Nederland, Frankrijk en zelfs Engeland. Zijn ploegen kon men treffen zowel in Leeuwarden, Duinkerke als Orléans. De opbouw van een constructie duurde zowat drie tot vier weken. De afbraak nam een goeie week in beslag. Tijdens de bouw van zijn tijdelijk circus op het foorplein te Gent, in het voorjaar 1896, verklaarde hij dat zijn werknemers op dat moment op elf plaatsen een renbaan aan het timmeren waren, waarvan negen in Frankrijk. Hij voegde eraan toe dat hij daarmee aan veel Gentenaars werk verschafte.
Na een geslaagd zakenleven liet Bovyn rond 1910 zijn bedrijf over aan Jos. Detaille, die nog gedurende een paar jaar hier en daar constructies optrok. Daarna was het ermee gedaan. Na de Eerst Wereldoorlog behoorden ze definitief tot het verleden. August Bovyn overleed te Vorst in 1922. Zijn grafsteen is terug te vinden op het kerkhof van Brussel, gelegen ‘3de Laan’, nabij het ‘Rond Plein der Duitsen’.
