Popov is dood.
Middenin het mediageweld van de Amerikaanse verkiezingen kwam het bericht dat de koning van de lach het hogerop had gezocht. Gelijk heeft-ie, dacht ik bij mezelf. Er valt hier weinig meer te lachen op deze aardkloot. In plaats van rug aan rug staan we lijnrecht tegenover elkaar. Zwart tegenover wit, westers tegenover islamitisch, rechts tegenover links; we zijn het samenleven beu en bekijken elkaar met groeiende argwaan en angst, en trakteren elkaar op frustratie en fulminatie.
Dat brengt me terug bij de periode van de Koude Oorlog. In die tijd was het niet veel anders. De wereld was verdeeld in Oost en West en ieder land moest kiezen waar het bij wilde horen, anders kon het gegarandeerd rekenen op strafmaatregelen van een van de twee ‘grote broers’. Het enige lichtpuntje kwam van een kleine clown met een zwartwit geblokte pet. Als boegbeeld van het Russische Staatscircus werd hij op tournee door het Westen gestuurd om goede sier te maken voor de Sovjet-Unie. Ik zag hem als kleine jongen in Ahoy in Rotterdam. Hij was toen al een fenomeen, al begreep ik niet goed wat dat betekende.
Hij verwarmde zich in de piste aan de lichtcirkel van de volgspot die op de grond scheen, wentelde zich erin, veegde de cirkel van licht ten slotte met zijn handen bij elkaar en schoof het in zijn tas. Als wilde hij zeggen: koester het licht en hou het brandend, ook in donkere tijden. Zo oversteeg hij met de menselijke maat de politieke. Hij liet ons – bedrieglijk eenvoudig – zien dat wij allen maar mensen zijn die naar hetzelfde verlangen.
Maar zoals dat kan gebeuren met helden uit je jeugd die je op een voetstuk plaatst ben ik later op hem afgeknapt, toen zijn rekwisieten steeds groter en zijn magie steeds kleiner werd. Daar waar hij eerst zo sterk was als poëtische clown werd hij steeds commerciëler en gemakzuchtiger. Ik week uit naar nieuwe helden, zoals Jango Edwards, en zette Popov bij het vuilnis.
Thank God for YouTube. Bij het terugkijken van filmfragmenten van deze grote clown valt me weer op hoe ongelooflijk goed hij was. Hij was een alleskunner: evenwichtskunstenaar op het slappe koord, jongleur, goochelaar. Een ideaal waar ik tot op de dag van vandaag naar blijf streven, al heb ik dat talent niet.
Maar het mooiste wat opvalt is het schijnbare gemak waarmee hij de mensen naar zich toe weet te trekken. De rust en vanzelfsprekendheid van zijn plek in de piste, dat open gezicht en die grote poëtische kracht van zijn spel. Het heeft de kwade harten in de Koude Oorlog kunnen ontdooien. Zoals de wereld nu – meer dan ooit – de clown, de komiek, de humor nodig heeft om ons samen te laten lachen om onze menselijke kleinzieligheden.
De clown is dood, leve de clown!

Olaf Malmberg (1966) is een Nederlandse acteur met een liefde voor circus en clowns. In 2007 speelde hij een clown in de voorstelling ‘Alptraum’ van Toneelgroep Oostpool, in 2010 verving hij één van de Ashton Brothers tijdens hun tournee door Spanje en Frankrijk en dit jaar vertolkte hij de rol van Buziau in de musicalrevue over het leven van deze legendarische Nederlandse clown. Komend seizoen toert hij langs festivals met zijn theatersolo over een acteur die liever clown wil zijn.
