De huidige coördinator van Circusplaneet en de coördinator in wording van Ell Circo d’ell Fuego zijn respectievelijk een wildkamperende danseres met een diploma kunstwetenschappen en een gymnaste met een stevig scoutsverleden die ooit lesgaf in vijf circusateliers tegelijk. Hoog tijd voor een dubbelinterview!

Eva Grauwels is sinds september 2016 artistiek en pedagogisch coördinator van Circusplaneet in Gent. Mieke Gielen mag zich binnen enkele maanden pedagogisch coördinator van het Antwerpse Ell Circo d’ell Fuego noemen. Geen slechte keuze van die ateliers, want beiden barsten van goesting, visie en toekomstdromen. Weg met bescheidenheid! Circus in Vlaanderen is gewoon goed bezig.
Eva, hoe ben jij op je huidige functie terecht gekomen?
Eva Grauwels: “Ik heb dans gestudeerd in het middelbaar en behaalde daarna een diploma kunstwetenschappen. Op het moment dat de vacature bij Circusplaneet werd uitgeschreven, gaf ik er al les aan volwassenen en had ik een vaste job in de wereld van de danseducatie. De functie leek me boeiend omdat ik in het beleidswerk dat ik toen vooral deed het menselijke aspect miste, het echte educatieve dichtbij lesgevers en leerlingen. Ik waagde mijn kans en hier zit ik nu. Ik heb nochtans nooit gedacht ‘ik ga iets met circus doen’… Of misschien wel ooit, als kind. Maar zo’n fase heeft iedereen wel eens gehad, denk ik.”
De wereld van het circus was toen nog eerder onbekend terrein voor jou. Was dat geen nadeel?
Grauwels: “Het is een hechte sector, waar iedereen elkaar kent. Dat moest ik op korte tijd zien in te halen. Gelukkig gaat het er allemaal nogal gemoedelijk aan toe in de circussector. In de danswereld kent ook iedereen elkaar, maar iedereen kent er ook zijn plaats. In het circus is er veel minder die hiërarchie. Die openheid is fijn en schept mogelijkheden. Een voordeel is dat ik met een andere bril naar het Vlaamse circus kijk. Dat kan soms erg verhelderend zijn, zowel voor mezelf als voor de sector. En uiteraard neem ik de ervaringen van mijn vorige jobs mee. Je ziet de grenzen tussen circus en dans tegenwoordig steeds meer vervagen, dus ook voor mij was die stap niet volledig onlogisch.”
Mieke, welke weg leidde jou naar het circus?
Mieke Gielen: “In Zonhoven, waar ik opgroeide, was er nog geen sprake van circuslessen of een circusatelier in de buurt. Anders was ik er misschien al vroeger bij uitgekomen, want het heeft me altijd aangetrokken. Maar ik dacht dat er enkel circus bestond zoals ik dat kende van Cirque du Soleil of andere megaspektakels. Niet iets voor een ‘gewone’ turnster zoals ik toen. Tijdens mijn studie aan het sportkot in Leuven kwam ik in contact met Cirkus in Beweging. Wat een eyeopener dat je circus op recreatief niveau kon doen! Mijn bagage als gymnaste was mooi meegenomen. Ik had de smaak te pakken en met mijn universitair diploma op zak trok in naar de Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles voor de Formation Pédagogique (éénjarige opleiding tot circusdocent, red.). Na dat jaar ben ik niet meer weggegaan uit het circus. Ik nam me voor om me open te stellen voor alles wat de sector te bieden had. Zoiets gaat snel rond, en ook toen al was circuslesgever een knelpuntberoep. Voor ik het wist, gaf ik les in vijf circusscholen tegelijk. Ik stond elke dag van de week in een andere stad les te geven! Ik heb daardoor op korte tijd heel veel mensen en organisaties leren kennen. Een goed begin. Daarna werkte ik een tijd vast bij Circolito in Mechelen. Ik kreeg er de kans om me verder te ontwikkelen als docent, het internationale circusveld te verkennen en artistiek werk te doen met onder meer RRRush en Da Stoelt, samen met Tom Pyck van wie ik ontzettend veel geleerd heb. Intussen geef ik ook les in de Leuvense circushumaniora en de hogeschool Thomas More in Turnhout, ben ik betrokken bij de ESAC-stage van Circuscentrum en probeer ik ook nog mijn eigen acrobatische training te onderhouden. Ik daag mezelf constant uit om nieuwe dingen te proberen. Soms vermoeiend maar altijd boeiend. En het houdt me gemotiveerd.”
Wat drijft jullie om in deze sector te werken?
Grauwels: “Wat mij aantrekt is het feit dat er zoveel beweegt. Circus is een jonge sector, waar alle mogelijkheden nog open liggen. Daardoor heeft wat je doet echt impact, je hebt het gevoel te kunnen bijdragen.”
Gielen: “Inderdaad, hoewel ik er zelf ook zomaar ben ingerold, heb ik toch het gevoel dat ik al dingen heb kunnen bestendigen; door jongeren op te leiden, door bepaalde mensen samen te brengen of bepaalde projecten te initiëren.”
Grauwels: “Het is fijn om na te denken over de toekomst en die mee vorm te geven. Elke kunstvorm heeft het in zich om te vernieuwen en te ontwikkelen, maar vaak is de structuur errond al zo star dat het toch erg traag gaat. Bij circus is dat nog niet het geval.”
Mieke, jij richtte onlangs de organisatie Ondersteboven op met als doel circus te combineren met de pedagogie van het ervaringsleren. Wat moeten we ons daarbij voorstellen?
Gielen: “In mijn honger naar nieuwe uitdagingen ontdekte ik het ervaringsleren, een pedagogische aanpak waarbij een bewegingsactiviteit wordt ingezet als middel om iets te leren over jezelf en de groep, zonder een vooropgesteld doel. De uitdaging die de activiteit inhoudt, maakt bepaalde ervaringen of reacties los bij de deelnemers. Door ruimte te maken voor wat er naar boven komt, ontstaat de mogelijkheid tot persoonlijke groei. Ik zag meteen het potentieel van circus als middel voor ervaringsleren en kreeg de kans om het in de praktijk te testen. Een succes! Intussen richtte ik Ondersteboven op, samen met Milena Nowak, die vertrouwd is met ervaringsleren via haar werk in de bijzondere jeugdzorg. Het gaat allemaal snel want voor volgend jaar zijn er al twee grote projecten goedgekeurd!”
Zie ik het verkeerd als ik zeg dat ervaringsleren op een manier in elke circusles zit?
Gielen: “Ja, maar weinig bewust. Bij ervaringsleren gaat het om het faciliteren van een proces, dat is iets heel anders dan ‘les geven’. Als iemand bang is om een salto te springen, dan kan je hem helpen, een mat extra leggen, hem overtuigen dat het wel zal lukken. Of je kan vragen: ‘Waarom ben je bang?’ Misschien zal die leerling nooit een salto leren springen, maar hij krijgt wel de kans om iets over zichzelf te leren wat ook in andere situaties zinvol kan zijn. Nu, je hebt de ‘gewone’ manier van lesgeven – het doorgeven van kennis en skills – ook nodig, hè. Maar ik denk dat enige notie van groepsdynamica voor elke lesgever een meerwaarde kan zijn.”
Eva, jij bent artistiek én pedagogisch coördinator van Circusplaneet. Een pittige combinatie. Is er een duidelijk onderscheid tussen je artistieke en je pedagogische taken?
Grauwels: “Dat loopt volledig door elkaar. We willen graag het artistieke een plaats geven binnen de wekelijkse circuslessen. Creatief omgaan met wat wordt aangebracht in een les is een leerdoel op zich. Het stimuleert zowel leerlingen als lesgevers, er ontstaan nieuwe dingen, en als het tijd is voor de creatie van onze eindvoorstelling is de stap van techniek naar een nummer veel minder groot. Ik probeer het lesgeversteam ook bewust te maken van het feit dat er verschillende manieren van lesgeven zijn, onder meer omdat niet elk kind dezelfde leerstijl prefereert. We bieden dan ook bepaalde lessen aan die focussen op creativiteit, op peerteaching, op kruisbestuiving tussen technieken enzovoort. Op die manier sluipt onze artistieke visie binnen in het pedagogisch kader en omgekeerd.”
Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat veel ateliers deze zoektocht herkennen. Hoe goed kennen jullie de werking van andere ateliers?
Grauwels: “Dat begint al wat te komen, maar ik zou ze zeker nog beter willen leren kennen. Ik deed onlangs mee aan een uitwisseling rond beleid, georganiseerd door Circuscentrum, met verschillende Europese circusateliers. Het werkt verhelderend om te horen hoe anderen omgaan met zaken waar je binnen je eigen atelier ook mee worstelt. Zo’n ontmoeting inspireert en creëert een bepaalde verbondenheid. Maar we zouden inderdaad al veel kunnen leren van de Vlaamse ateliers onderling.”
Gielen: “Er is natuurlijk meer dan één manier om het te doen. Volgens mij werkt het enkel als je de dingen zo aanpakt dat je dichtbij jezelf blijft en bij wat je belangrijk vindt.”
Grauwels: “De hele community creëert de identiteit van een atelier: de lesgevers, de leerlingen, de artiesten die er komen trainen, de vrijwilligers, … het is tof om te zien hoe elk atelier een verschillende identiteit heeft. Dat merk je bijvoorbeeld aan het feit dat bepaalde technieken populairder zijn in de ene school dan in de andere.”
Welke plaats heeft artistieke vorming in een circusatelier?
Gielen: “Ik kan vooral spreken vanuit mijn ervaring bij Circolito. Daar zijn we op een bepaald moment gestart met een open creatieruimte, voor iedereen die zin heeft om iets te maken. Een voorwaarde om dat te laten werken, is dat je naast ruimte ook boeiende speelkansen biedt, zodat het creëren een zinvolle uitkomst heeft. Die combinatie werkt: de ruimte is er, maar uiteindelijk moeten er wel knopen doorgehakt worden zodat je het podium op kan met een afgewerkt product. We merkten dat dat ook een positieve invloed heeft op het werk met productiegroepen. De grotere ego’s kunnen hun ei al kwijt in eigen werk via de creatieruimte, waardoor het collectieve werk vlotter gaat. Als de jongeren inzien dat het belangrijker is om er als groep te staan dan om als individu te ‘shinen’, dan komt dat de kwaliteit van een voorstelling uiteraard ten goede.”
Grauwels: “Ik vind dat er op elk niveau leerkansen geboden moeten worden. Hoe laagdrempelig of gevorderd ook. In Gent lanceerden we naast de productiegroepen sinds kort ook ‘vers talent’: wie een artistiek idee heeft, kan daarmee naar ons komen. Wij stippelen een traject op maat uit, op basis van een concrete vraag. Sommigen willen ondersteuning van begin tot eind, anderen enkel een zaal. Maar uiteindelijk is het de bedoeling dat er getoond wordt, al is het maar aan elkaar. Verder gaan dan het onderzoek, keuzes maken en ervoor gaan.”
Wat is volgens jullie topprioriteit voor een pedagogisch coördinator?
Grauwels: “Talentontwikkeling. Van iedereen die les volgt bij ons. Of je nu op je vijftigste op je handen wil leren staan, of je klaarmaakt voor audities na het zesde middelbaar. Onze missie is zorgen dat elk profiel evenveel mogelijkheden krijgt. Met een divers lesgeversteam kom je al een heel eind: de ene bereikt het meest in de rol van hoogtechnische trainer, iemand anders is steengoed in laagdrempelig aan de slag gaan met alle mogelijke groepen. Niet iedereen moet alles kunnen, je moet de kwaliteiten van je team juist ten volle benutten door de juiste persoon op de juiste plaats te zetten.”
Gielen: “Je moet kunnen inspelen op de verschillende interesses van je leerlingen. Misschien zijn er wel die liever lesgeven dan zelf te trainen of die interesse hebben in logistiek en organisatie. Het is ook goed om diverse rolmodellen te hebben in een lesgeversteam. Dat je niet enkel ‘de circusartiest’ hebt om naar op te kijken. Een valkuil is wel dat je mensen gaat categoriseren: de artiest, de pedagoog, … Terwijl dat ook allemaal door elkaar kan lopen.”
Grauwels: “Die openheid vind ik erg belangrijk, met name in de ondersteuning van lesgevers. Je hebt al snel een bepaald label. Akkoord, je hebt je talenten en affiniteiten, maar iedereen verandert. En misschien groeit de goesting om andere horizonten te verkennen, een andere functie op te nemen in de organisatie… Dat moet kunnen, vind ik. Het houdt lesgevers gemotiveerd.”
Hoe zien jullie je rol als coördinator?
Gielen: “Ik start in september met een team dat al een geschiedenis heeft, dus aankomen met een vooropgesteld plan lijkt me niet het beste idee. Van nature ben ik een afwachtend persoon. Ik stap erin met al mijn bagage en zie welke gaten ik kan opvullen. Wat me boeit is het idee van een lerende organisatie, waar de focus ligt op jezelf ontwikkelen en elkaar daarin ondersteunen. Momenteel is er nog geen pedagogisch coördinator bij Ell Circo d’ell Fuego, ik zal dus mijn plaats wat moeten zoeken, misschien zelfs opeisen.”
Grauwels: “Bij mij was dat ook het geval, ook mijn functie was nieuw, maar ik heb dat als een voordeel ervaren. Ik kon de job zelf invullen, moest niet de plek van iemand anders innemen. In dat eerste jaar heb ik vooral het draagvlak proberen te creëren om verandering in gang te zetten. Het liefst was ik er direct ingevlogen met allemaal nieuwe plannen, maar je moet aanvaarden dat het een traag proces is om iedereen mee te krijgen. Een uitgangspunt van ons nieuw beleidsplan, waar we hopelijk in 2018 mee van start kunnen, is de vraag hoe we iedereen die deel uitmaakt van Circusplaneet nog meer kunnen betrekken in de werking. Hoe kunnen we ook buiten het team mensen stimuleren om met ideeën te komen, en hoe kunnen we de openheid garanderen om er op in te gaan. Dat gaat ook samen met de sensibilisering van de community om mee verantwoordelijkheid te dragen voor de organisatie. Het is niet genoeg om een idee te posten, je moet er zelf je schouders onder willen zetten.”
Hoe ziet de toekomst van de circusateliers er uit?
Grauwels: “Ik zou het fijn vinden als op termijn de scheidingslijnen volledig verdwijnen: tussen het professionele circuit, de amateurartiesten, de circusscholen, de productiegroepen, … Dat vraagt een bepaalde instelling binnen de ateliers. Openheid naar het veld toe, en omgekeerd de openheid van de rest van het veld naar de ateliers.”
Gielen: “Ik ervaar die scheidingslijnen niet zo. Volgens mij is er al enorm veel openheid.”
Grauwels: “Er gebeurt inderdaad al veel en circusateliers zijn veel meer dan een plek om circuslessen te volgen. Maar ik voel de druk van bovenaf om vakjes te creëren. Om een voorbeeld te geven: wij vallen als Circusplaneet sinds kort onder het jeugddecreet, wat onze doelgroep zogezegd beperkt tot leden onder de dertig jaar. Je voelt dat er vanuit overheden druk wordt gezet om je werking te definiëren, maar ik vind dat allesbehalve wenselijk. De huidige diversiteit maakt het net zo rijk.”
Gielen: “Hoe meer we groeien als sector, hoe meer we te maken zullen krijgen met regelgeving en hokjesdenken. Maar ik denk dat het circus altijd wel stout genoeg zal blijven om die hokjes terug open te ‘sjotten’. Wat ik graag zou zien in de toekomst is dat onze circuspedagogie meer bekendheid krijgt, zodat die kan dienen als inspiratie voor onderwijs, vormingswerk, … En dan bedoel ik niet zozeer wat we doen (circus), maar hoe we het doen. Je kan die methoden perfect toepassen in een andere context. Daar zou eens serieus onderzoek naar gedaan moeten worden. Hoeveel studies zijn er al niet gebeurd rond voetbal, gymnastiek, volleybal, … Circus is nagenoeg onontgonnen terrein en razend interessant en waardevol.”
Wat wensen jullie het circusveld toe?
Grauwels: “De vrijheid om ons eigen ding te doen en te groeien in eender welke richting.”
Gielen: “Ruimte en vertrouwen en de durf om er echt voor te gaan, boven jezelf uit te groeien.”
Grauwels: “En de durf om het samen doen!”
Gielen: “Inderdaad. Als je je ego kan wegzetten, dan is er zoveel meer mogelijk. Binnen onze sector, maar ook in samenwerkingsverbanden over de grenzen van verschillende sectoren heen. Maar we mogen ons natuurlijk niet laten wegcijferen.”
Grauwels: “Niet te bescheiden zijn, zonder pretentieus te worden.”
Wat zijn jullie eigen toekomstplannen?
Grauwels: “Ik heb geen vijfjarenplan uitgestippeld. Hoewel het nooit mijn plan was om in het circus te werken, ben ik nu superblij dat ik eraan begon. Ik voel me volledig op mijn plaats. Maar wie weet doe ik binnen een paar jaar wel iets helemaal anders…”
Gielen: “Ik heb geleerd om zonder verwachtingen enkel die projecten aan te nemen waar ik energie van krijg en daar dan volledig voor te gaan. Dat werkt. Ik blijf gemotiveerd, zonder de stress voor een mislukking. Want als iets niet loopt zoals verwacht, dan zie ik het als een leerkans. Zolang ik die keuzes kan blijven maken, zie ik mijn toekomst rooskleurig in.”
