Het is een naam die je niet zomaar ijdel gebruikt. De Daltons. Of het nu gaat om de domme broers die stripheld Lucky Luke belaagden dan wel om de roemruchte bandietenbende uit het begin van de vorige eeuw waarop stripauteur Morris (en later Goscinny) zich baseerde, je voorstelling vernoemen naar deze broers schept verwachtingen. In de jeugdvoorstelling ‘De Daltons’ (6+) blijft weinig over van die referenties. Of het moeten de virtuoos jonglerende broers Sander en Jordaan De Cuyper zijn. Maar mag het iets meer zijn?

In ‘De Daltons’ geen spoor van een poor and lonesome cowboy die op zijn paard Jolly Jumper nieuwe avonturen tegemoet rijdt, wel een eenzaam meisje met een goudvis dat elke dag sloft naar een job zonder voldoening. Voorwaar een interessante premisse voor een jeugdvoorstelling ware het niet dat dit op geen enkel moment echt uit de verf komt.
Met haar hoofd in een kom – een beetje zoals een struisvogel in het zand – is zij het meisje in dit verhaal (actrice Laurence Roothooft). Eenzaam in haar woonst waar enkel de goudvis haar gezelschap houdt. Maar telkens ze de deur achter zich dichttrekt komt een zootje ongeregeld tevoorschijn die het huis grondig verbouwt.
Het is de insteek van vele verhalen en familiefilms. Van de kaboutertjes die onze ene sok doen verdwijnen tot huisdieren die de boel op stelten zetten. Het doet de kinderlijke fantasie op hol slaan: wat gebeurt er als de kat van huis is? Dan dansen de muizen, of in dit geval: dan duiken drie onverlaten op.
In de donkerte halen ze het huis ondersteboven. Frigo, tafel, bed, stoelen: het wordt een binnenspeeltuin waarin gestoeid wordt en af en toe ook ruzie gemaakt. Dat de ene (de Chileense clown Gonzalo Alarcon) daarbij zijn broek afsteekt in wederkerende colère is een in kindertheater beproefde daad, en het maakt het jolijt er bij het jonge publiek niet minder om. Dat de andere twee vlegels (Sander en Jordaan De Cuyper van Cie Pol & Freddy en Cie Ea Eo) ook nog eens de trukendoos van de jonglerie mogen bovenhalen, wekt bijkomende kreten van verwondering op. En terecht, de kunsten die de broers uithalen (de pingpong met alle huis- en keukengerei!) is opzienbarend. Maar mag het iets meer zijn? Mogen we meer verwachten van deze samenwerking tussen de crème van het jeugdtheater en de top van de Belgische circuskunsten?
Ja, luidt het antwoord. En dat is spijtig, des te meer omdat het Gentse jeugdtheaterhuis KOPERGIETERY niet zomaar even op de kar van het circus hopt, maar al langer een band heeft met circus, zowel in coproductie, presentatie als in vorming (via Circuscentrum). Maar in deze eerste eigen circuscreatie blinkt het uit in de afwezigheid van wat podiumkunsten soms denken de circuskunsten te kunnen leren, namelijk vertrekken van de vraag ‘wat willen we vertellen?’ in plaats van ‘wat willen we doen?’ Omdat in ‘De Daltons’ de vraag ‘wat willen we vertellen’ niet verder raakt dan een ‘wat gaan we doen’ (niet eens ‘wat willen we doen’, dat ware al interessanter geweest). Omdat coaching hier de grote afwezige is. Die sturing in vorm, inhoud en spel; die visie op algemene regie, dramaturgie en toegespitste spelbegeleiding – elementen die in veel circusproducties onvoldoende worden opgenomen, waardoor circus nog vaak als ‘minderwaardige’ kunstvorm wordt beschouwd – zijn hier juist erg ver te zoeken. Dat wordt pijnlijk duidelijk eenmaal de interessant aangezette situatieschets zich wil ontwikkelen tot een verhaal.
Want uiteraard worden de drie onverlaten betrapt door het meisje, uiteraard is er eerst de schrik, daarna de schuchtere toenadering om uiteindelijk elkaars anders zijn te omarmen. Maar dit wordt hier zo clichématig afgehandeld, daarbij niet gehinderd door inconsequent spel (de weinig geloofwaardige verbazing bij de eerste ontmoeting) dat het niet zou misstaan in een ondermaatse musical. En daarmee komt een andere referentie boven, die van de musical die hier als vormmiddeltje wordt ingezet, maar waarbij deze productie niet weet van welk hout pijlen maken. Ironisch of echt gemeend? Beide opties hadden een uitdaging kunnen zijn binnen deze fusion van circus en theater.
‘De Daltons’ blaast echter warm noch koud met een melige afwikkeling. Het in se tragisch Bildungsgegeven van een meisje/jonge vrouw op zoek naar zingeving en het waarmaken van haar droom (een zangcarrière) loopt hier van een konijnenoutfit als hostessenjob voor een Duracellreclame naar een make-over tot vamp (eerder Cher dan Lady Gaga) die zingt: ‘Wie ben jij?’ Qua hedendaags vrouwbeeld kan dit ook weer tellen.
Mag het iets meer zijn?
Zeker, het jeugdige publiek lag regelmatig in een deuk. En ja, dit is een voorstelling specifiek gericht naar kinderen. Maar dat is geen reden om inhoud, samenhang en relevantie achterwege te laten. Dit samenspel van circus, theater en musical is hoogstens een steriel bijeenbrengen van disciplines. ‘De Daltons’ is jongleren als kunde, theater zonder intrinsieke noodzaak en mist de kronkels om met musical iets meer te doen dan wat het clichématige overstijgt. Ook voor, nee vooral voor zesjarigen mag er wat meer vet op de soep dan hetgeen deze ‘De Daltons’ serveren.
