De ‘wipwap’. Zo doopten grondacrobaten Xenia Bannuscher en Dries Vanwalle de rolbeweging die ze over en weer op hun ruggengraat maken. Ze hurken, verplaatsen hun gewicht achteruit, rollen om, tot hun benen de lucht in steken als een kaars. Wip. En dan weer terug. Opnieuw en opnieuw. In juni 2020 zwaaiden de twee circushogeschool Codarts in Rotterdam uit, waar ze zich specialiseerden in acro-dans. De basis voor hun rugrol werd daar gelegd, maar het is met René, de allereerste voorstelling van hun gezelschap Sinking Sideways, dat zij deze beweging nu tot op de bodem proberen uit te spitten. Gedwongen ongehaast, door corona.
In première gaat René binnenkort, op 9 oktober tijdens Vitrine PERPLX in Kortrijk. Tegen dan zullen Xenia en Dries de wipwap honderden keren ingestudeerd hebben. Op Instagram delen ze foto’s van de kneuzingen die hun rugwervels het uitzicht geven van een reptiel. Dit wordt een gesprek waar dunne lijnen door lopen. Tussen pijn en plezier, tussen zwijgen of spreken. Of, om er nog één te noemen, die tussen dans en circus.
Xenia Bannuscher: “Zouden we wat wij doen dans noemen, dan zou de vraag wat het wel of niet is niet vallen.”
Dries Vanwalle: “Onze discipline heet acro-dans. Ik heb er iets raar mee: ik denk niet dat ik mezelf ooit een danser zou durven noemen, ook al zou ik uitsluitend in dansvoorstellingen meedoen en exact hetzelfde als alle andere dansers uitvoeren. Gewoon omdat ik circusschool heb gedaan en geen diploma als danser heb.”
Xenia: “Het dans labelen zou op een manier als een ‘easy way out’ voelen. Om te profiteren van een kunstvorm die al gevestigd is. Voor mij gaat het ook over mijn achtergrond en over de kunstvorm waaraan ik wil bijdragen. Circus is in zoveel verschillende richtingen aan het evolueren en het is erg bevredigend om daaraan mee te werken. Dansers zouden deze voorstelling ook kunnen maken, maar hun weg om er te geraken zou zo verschillend zijn.”
Even terugspoelen naar Circus Cravings in Gent, juli 2021. Xenia en Dries tonen er René als work in progress. De twee performers, nu nog naast de spotlights, kijken toe terwijl het publiek binnensijpelt. Kleine handelingen verraden hun verlangen naar focus: handen die zich nog niet stil laten houden, een pluisje van de matten plukken. Dan betreden de twee lijven de scène. Na een korte knik komt de eerste rol, die meteen op een ‘wip’ blijft steken, de benen in de lucht. Veertig minuten later rollen de twee nog steeds. De rubber matten die hun rug(gengraat) moeten ontlasten, geven al die tijd krakend het ritme mee. De ganse voorstelling houden ze ruggelings contact met de ondergrond. Het is alsof het hen ook figuurlijk down to earth maakt.
Xenia: “Ik denk dat het inherent is aan wat we doen: de grond opzoeken, de grond ontmoeten.”
Dries: “We gebruiken daarvoor onze lichamen. Ik heb vroeger wel gejongleerd, maar ik heb al heel lang niet meer met objecten geïmproviseerd.”
Xenia: “Er zijn geen andere props, alleen de vloer, om mee te werken. Soms vragen we ons af of het wel genoeg is, of het wel genoeg circus is, maar de focus komt daardoor op de eenvoud te liggen. Het dwingt ons om enkel de vloer te gebruiken en daar ook niet van weg te gaan door allerlei lagen of elementen toe te voegen. Ik voel me veel kwetsbaarder met een ding op de scène waar ik me dan tegenover moet gaan verhouden.”
René draait rond herhaling en synchroniciteit. Hoe werken jullie daarnaartoe?
Dries: “Wij hebben twee heel verschillende lichamen. Ik ben één meter tachtig en jij bent?”
Xenia: “Eén vijfenzestig.”
Dries: “Er is dus een groot verschil in lengte. Mijn armen zijn in verhouding ook heel lang. Synchroniciteit is moeilijk te bereiken.”
Xenia: “De twee lichamen functioneren op een andere manier.”
Dries: “We filmen de repetities, of we observeren elkaar, hoe de ander de beweging uitvoert. Dan zie ik bijvoorbeeld dat zij haar benen hoger opduwt, of ik mijn armen anders plaats, en zoeken we een middenweg in de beweging. Of ik probeer het op haar manier te doen om zo te ontdekken wat de beste manier is om de beweging te maken, voor beide lichamen. Eens we daar uit zijn, proberen we het op die manier in te studeren.”
Xenia: “De muziek is gebaseerd op de klank van een metronoom, dus aan die beat kunnen we de bewegingen ophangen. Al gebeurt het ook dat iemand uit de maat valt en dan moet de ander zich aanpassen.”
Dries: “De synchroniciteit is heel belangrijk, maar het is ook interessant om te zien hoe twee diverse lichamen zich bewegen en waar de verschillen zitten in dezelfde handeling. We herhalen de bewegingen keer op keer, zodat mensen effectief de tijd hebben om de gelijkenissen en verschillen op te merken. We vergroten die verschillen niet bewust uit, maar ze zijn er sowieso.”
Xenia: “Als we bijvoorbeeld hurken en met onze arme zwieren, komen de handen van Dries tot aan de grond, omdat zijn armen zo lang zijn, terwijl de mijne door de lucht zwieren. Het zijn zulke details, en de focus op iets zo kleins als een verschil in armlengte, die ik zou willen meegeven aan het publiek. Hen laten kijken naar wat er in de eenvoud schuilt. Dat ze in het begin misschien iets hebben van ‘gaan jullie nu de hele tijd rollen’, er een zekere weerstand tegen voelen, maar na verloop van tijd in een soort trance komen. Dan ontstaat er opwinding over de kleinste verandering die we inzetten in de eindeloze herhaling.”
Onze omgang met repetitiviteit, is dat wat jullie uitspitten in deze creatie?
Dries: “Het is één van de thema’s die we onderzoeken.”
Xenia: “Voor mij gaat het ook over wat circus is, of kan zijn. Vaak wordt gezegd dat circus over risico gaat. Ik denk dat het ook opgaat voor wat wij doen. Alles is gechoreografeerd. Het risico schuilt in de fouten die we kunnen maken in de eindeloze herhalingen. Maar ook in die herhaling zelf: sommigen zullen het misschien heel saai vinden. En dat is natuurlijk helemaal prima, niet iedereen moet het leuk vinden. Maar als je er in mee wil gaan, wordt de spanning van de herhaling en het risico dat erin schuilt net interessant.”
Dries: “Er is ook de fysieke uitputting van de hele tijd dezelfde beweging uit te voeren, veertig minuten lang.”
Xenia: “Eénenveertig!”
Dries: “De wipwap-beweging op zich is niet zo zwaar, maar na een tijdje wordt het wel uitputtend.”
Xenia: “Ik hou erg van herhaling. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik het misschien die richting heb uitgestuurd. Ik luister naar dezelfde songs op repeat, desnoods voor vijf uur, of doe repetitieve handelingen zoals een boek binden.”
Dries: “I don’t get that. Ik hou van de herhaling in René, maar uren naar hetzelfde nummer luisteren? Twee keer vind ik al veel.”
Xenia: “Tijdens de voorstelling is het heel bijzonder om te voelen hoe je in een concentratie en trance komt, waardoor je lijf het blijft doen zonder dat je hoofd er nog bij na moet denken. Dan kan ik focussen op bijvoorbeeld hoe ik mijn vingers houd.”
Dries: “Het lichaam neemt het over.”
Is dat de kracht van herhaling?
Xenia: “Ja, dat denk ik wel. En ook: doorzetten om dat stadium te bereiken.”
Hebben jullie bepaalde rituelen?
Xenia: “De manier waarop we de matten leggen. Hoe we de ruimte waar we werken voorbereiden door de papieren met onze notities en tekeningen op te hangen.”
Dries: “Heb jij iets voor de voorstelling?”
Xenia: “Ik niet, maar jij wel. Hij moet een press-up handstand doen voor elke voorstelling.”
Dries: “Ik weet niet waarom en het irriteert me echt. Ik zou er mee moeten stoppen, want op een dag lukt het me niet en dan zal ik de scène niet op willen.”
En word je je daar meer bewust van door de creatie van René?
Xenia: “Ik denk dat ik me er al vrij bewust van was, omdat het in mijn dagelijkse leven ook aan de hand is. En misschien zal jij je ook meer bewust worden van de jouwe. Ik denk dat Dries in feite een zeer ritueel persoon is.”
Dries: “Ik een ritueel persoon?”
Xenia: “Je hebt zeer specifieke manieren om bepaalde dingen te doen, en je doet ze altijd op dezelfde manier.”
Dries: “Echt?”
Xenia (lachend): “We bespreken het later.”
Kijken jullie anders naar wat circus is of kan zijn dan toen je nog op school zat?
Xenia: “Op school lag de focus erg op het technische aspect. Wat we nu doen is daar een tegenreactie op. Na vier jaar op school, waarin je elk jaar twee acts van acht minuten moet maken, die een zekere level van techniek moeten hebben want anders vragen de docenten ‘hé, waar is je techniek?’ …”
Dries: “… en groepsshows waarin iedereen zijn solo krijgt…”
Xenia: “… en ik begrijp dat, want ze willen een zeker niveau meegeven op school. Maar dat is de impliciete definitie van circus die ik er heb meegekregen, en ik had er echt een afkeer van. Veertig minuten alleen maar rollen voelt als rebellie daartegen.”
Ik zag beelden van kneuzingen op jullie ruggen. Hoe verhouden jullie zich tegenover pijn?
Xenia: “Ik ervaar het niet negatief. Ik doe al mijn hele leven aan sport en hou ervan om mijn lichaam tot een punt te drijven waarop het iets heel goed beheerst. Al denk ik niet dat pijn noodzakelijk deel uitmaakt van circus. Lijden misschien op een manier wel: circus gaat, hoe je het ook benadert, over training en focus. En daarin bereik je een punt waarop je denkt dat je niet goed genoeg bent, of de eindeloze herhaling je zwaar valt. Het is een mentaal lijden. Helaas voor ons komt er in deze voorstelling ook fysieke pijn bij kijken.”
Dries: “In het begin wilden we per se zonder matten op de vloer werken, zodat we konden toeren met het openbaar vervoer. Maar mijn ruggengraat steekt nogal uit, dus ik rol daar de hele tijd op, en jij rolt op de spieren op de zijkant van je rug. Na een tijdje brandt het.”
Denk je dat het gezond is?
Xenia: “Het kan erg ongezond zijn, maar ik heb het gevoel dat wij weten tot welk punt we het kunnen duwen. Binnen onze samenwerking voelt het erg veilig om aan te geven als iemand moe is, of pijn heeft, en dan lassen we een fysieke rustdag in, doen we computerwerk of praten de dingen door. In een productie van iemand anders zou ik me wellicht verder pushen, dan vind ik het moeilijker om aan te geven dat mijn lichaam eronder lijdt. Maar jij kijkt alsof je het daar niet mee eens bent?”
Dries: “Ik weet het niet. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik wel weet hoe ik voor mijn lichaam moet zorgen, maar soms doe ik toch gewoon door. Terwijl ik weet dat het dom is. En jij doet dat ook.”
Xenia: “Dat is wellicht heel eigen aan circusartiesten.”
Is er een uitweg uit het afzien?
Xenia: “Ik denk dat we op de goede weg zijn, door onszelf pauzes te gunnen en te zeggen: ‘het is oké om vandaag niet te trainen.’ Maar je lichaam trainen om de dingen te doen die wij willen doen, dat is niet volledig pijnloos. Of misschien doet het nu geen pijn, maar ons lichaam is alleen in staat om het nu te doen omdat we door de pijn zijn gegaan toen we jonger waren.”
Dries: “Uiteindelijk is een pols niet gemaakt om het hele lichaamsgewicht te dragen.”
Xenia: “En een rug niet om 800 keer op te rollen.”
Was het op school moeilijker om je grenzen aan te geven?
Xenia: “Veel moeilijker. Je hebt verschillende lessen op een dag met verschillende docenten. Zeg je tegen de ene dat je je vandaag niet goed voelt, dan zegt de volgende: ‘ik zag je net nog een radslag trainen’.”
Dries: “Je traint ook met verschillende acrobaten samen. Als je gewond bent en ziet hoe de anderen vooruitgang boeken, dan ben je snel geneigd om jezelf een beetje te pushen om bij te benen. Terwijl het daardoor alleen erger wordt.”
Xenia: “Het is een erg dunne lijn, er is altijd sprake van een zekere competitie en het is heel moeilijk om niet te gaan vergelijken. Ik voel me zo veel vrijer nu ik afgestudeerd bent. De focus komt op het creëren te liggen, ik hoef me niet meer aan anderen te meten.”
Om het over een andere grens te hebben: aan een aantal circushogescholen werd onlangs door (oud-)studenten geprotesteerd onder de noemer #balancetoncirque. Ze wilden het jarenlange seksistische en grensoverschrijdende gedrag van een aantal docenten uit de doofpot halen. Leeft dat ook bij jullie?
Xenia: “Ik ben er heel actief mee bezig, spreek er veel met mensen over. Maar het heeft niet meteen iets te maken met ons werk, met deze voorstelling. Ik denk er wel over na, of ik het op de één of andere manier binnen wil brengen in de show. Het feit dat ik hier ben, zorgt sowieso voor een groter bewustzijn ervan. Maar als thema wil ik het niet opdringen. Het hoeft niet noodzakelijk op de scène te zijn, het kan in mijn manier van werken zitten, die ik overdraag op anderen.”
Dries: “Mijn manier van werken is zeker al veranderd door onze samenwerking.”
Xenia: “Ik vind het geweldig dat deze initiatieven nu ontstaan en dat ze de nodige aandacht krijgen. Ik probeer daaraan bij te dragen. In Duitsland ben ik, samen met anderen, een werkgroep aan het oprichten. Het is een kwestie van daar een goed evenwicht in te vinden. In wat we doen bij Sinking Sideways gaat het voor mij veel meer over choreografie en hoe dat in circus gebruikt kan worden. Bovendien hou ik ervan dat als je naar een voorstelling kijkt, er niet noodzakelijk een duidelijke verklaring of lezing is van wat het ‘grotere’ thema zou moeten zijn. Je kan het op je eigen manier interpreteren. Sommigen zullen bij ons een man en een vrouw op de scène zien en er een statement aan koppelen, zonder dat wij dat per se willen communiceren.”
Dries: “We hebben wel bepaalde beslissingen gemaakt, omdat we ons bewust zijn van hoe iets gelezen kan worden. We hebben het meegemaakt, tijdens een try-out, dat we op een bepaald moment met onze gezichten bij elkaar stonden en er toen iemand ‘kus’ riep. Wij hadden zoiets van ‘wat!?’, er was geen enkele reden of aanleiding voor.”
Xenia: “Het thema sluipt binnen, door wie we zijn en wat we tonen op de scène, hoewel het niet de ‘boodschap’ is.”
Heb je zelf ervaren dat je anders behandeld werd omwille van je gender?
Dries: “Ik heb het gezien en gehoord, maar zelf niet ervaren.”
Xenia: “Ik word behandeld en gesocialiseerd als een vrouw, elke dag, ook op school was dat zo. Het is goed dat er nu de vrijheid is om je ervaringen te delen met je studiegenoten, maar dat is nog iets anders dan actief weerwoord te bieden aan docenten. Ik merk het ook bij mezelf: dat vraagt veel moed, hoewel dat niet zo zou mogen zijn. Je weet dat men wat je zegt in vraag zal stellen, of ontkennen.”
Je moet letterlijk ruggengraat kweken?
Xenia: “Inderdaad. Er zijn verschillende momenten geweest waarvan ik weet dat ik iets had moeten zeggen tegen mensen in een bepaalde machtspositie, maar het niet deed. Uit zelfbescherming. Nu ik de school verlaten heb, vind ik het veel makkelijker om het bespreekbaar te maken. Ik zit niet meer in die machtsrelaties. Dat is ook het goede aan ons gezelschap: onze positie is gelijk, er is geen sprake van hiërarchie. Niet op en niet naast de scène. Als het bijvoorbeeld over fysieke aanraking gaat, die totaal niet seksueel hoeft te zijn, dan kan ik het heel open zeggen tegen Dries als ik me er niet comfortabel bij voel, zonder dat hij het raar opneemt – en vice versa. Dat zou uiteraard totaal normaal moeten zijn, maar ik merk dat het voor mij nieuw is en erg goed aanvoelt.”
Xenia: “We wisten al van het begin heel goed waar we met René naartoe wilden en hadden daar hetzelfde gevoel en gedacht over. Er is geen punt geweest waarop onze kijk op wat het moest worden echt totaal anders was, dus we hebben ook nog geen grote compromissen moeten sluiten. Het is niet zo dat er iemand op een bepaald moment een clown op de scène wilde.”
Sinking Sideways is eigenlijk een trio, geen duo. Raff Pringuet, in juni van dit jaar afgestudeerd aan Codarts, zal jullie na René opnieuw vervoegen, voor de creatie van Cécile. Denk je dat hij makkelijk in zal kunnen schuiven?
Xenia: “We zullen onze manier van werken veranderen, de taken herverdelen. We werken goed samen als een duo. We weten: op de derde dag ben ik een beetje down, op de vierde dag Dries. En dan weten we hoe we de ander best benaderen, wat de ander nodig heeft. Ook het productiewerk is verdeeld, we kennen elkaars sterktes daarin en geven elkaar het vertrouwen. Als Raff instapt, zullen we alles weer door elkaar gooien. Eerst zal het chaos brengen, maar daarna verandert het misschien ten goede. We proberen er zo open mogelijk over te communiceren.”
Epiloog
Dries: “Ik haat het woord wipwap nog steeds.”
Xenia: “Maar it makes sense, we gaan van ‘wip…wap’.”
Dries: “Ik weet het, maar ik zou het op een keer toch graag vervangen door een ander woord.”
Xenia (gemaakt streng): “We houden ons er nu aan.”
