Van 1880 tot 1940 was circus de voornaamste vorm van vermaak in Amerika. Voor de komst van radio, film en TV was het de grootste entertainmentindustrie die de wereld ooit had gezien. In deze ‘booming business’ steeg het aandeel vrouwen in de piste van een schamele twee procent in 1880 tot de helft na 1910. ‘Vroeger waren ze decoratie, nu zijn ze de hoofdacts,’ vertelde een gepensioneerde clown aan de New York Times in 1924.

Het publiek was gek op deze bekwame en getalenteerde vrouwen die, hoewel ze er fragieler uitzagen dan mannen, minstens evenveel risico’s namen en er heerlijk sensationeel uitzagen in hun weinig verhullende kostuums. Deze verheerlijking van de vrouwelijke kracht, de mogelijkheid om carrière te maken en hun ‘lichaamstaal’ stonden haaks op de sociale normen van die tijd.
Het circusmanagement was zich heel erg bewust van deze dualiteit én de aantrekkingskracht ervan. Door hun goed uitgebouwde promocampagnes slaagden ze er bijvoorbeeld in om halfnaakte vrouwen in en boven de piste te verkopen als ‘degelijk familieamusement’. De persagenten zorgden dat er artikels verschenen met de sentimentele focus op de huiselijkheid van de artiestes, om zo hun seksualiteit en de mogelijke tegenkanting van hun ‘abnormale’ positie in de samenleving tout court, te neutraliseren. Ze verspreidden het verhaal van de circusvrouwen die helemaal niet anders leefden dan de ‘gewone’ vrouw. Zo reist ze nooit alleen, maar blijft ze altijd onder de beschermende blik van haar ouders, broer of echtgenoot. De meesten zijn gehuwd. Zo niet, dan staan ze op het punt te trouwen. In een advertentie van de New York Evening Telegram uit 1902 lezen we dat ‘het huiselijke instinct heel erg sterk is onder de vrouwen in het circus, gezien een leven thuis hen ontzegd wordt voor het grootste deel van het jaar. Toch vindt ze op vele kleine manieren een uitlaatklep, zoals toestemming vragen aan de chef van de keukenwagon om eens een cake te bakken.’
De dresscode voor Amerikaanse vrouwen was een lange rok en een bloes met lange mouwen. Alles wat minder bedekte werd als ‘naakt’ beschouwd, inclusief een ‘leotard’ (maillot), panty’s of een jurk tot boven de knie met korte mouwen. Deze atletes, zo argumenteerde de circuspropaganda, konden zich echter niet anders kleden. Voor luchtacrobates zouden extra kleren zelfs gevaarlijk zijn op het hoge koord of aan de trapeze.
Nieuw korset
Maar de tijden veranderden. Na 1900 verkruimelde de gangbare ideologie van aparte sferen, waar vrouwen de rol van moeder en echtgenote opnamen in de privésfeer en mannen geld verdienden in de publieke wereld. Door de groei van de bedrijven en de dienstenindustrie, werkten steeds meer in Amerika geboren vrouwen als bijvoorbeeld typistes en verkoopsters. Ze hadden geld op zak, vrije tijd, en namen deel aan het publieke amusement. Hoe meer vrouwen er naar het circus kwamen kijken, hoe meer vrouwelijke acts werden aanvaard, zeker met de groeiende aandacht voor fitte, sterke vrouwenlijven, blakend van gezondheid. Vrouwen speelden baseball, basketbal, tennis, golf en gingen helemaal op in de ‘fietsgekte’.
Hoe bevrijdend dit ook allemaal was, met de maillot stapten de circusdames in een nieuw korset dat hen steeds strakker insnoerde. Seks verkoopt, en dat was in het begin van de twintigste eeuw niet anders. De roep van het publiek naar steeds meer sensatie (en dus minder kleren) en de groeiende competitie naarmate er steeds meer vrouwen de piste betraden, zorgden ervoor dat werkgevers hen onder druk zetten om zich steeds meer bloot te geven. Naast talent en vaardigheid werd het aantal centimeter stof van de outfit een belangrijk deel van hoe de act aan de man werd gebracht. Bij het onderhandelen van hun contract ging het niet alleen om loon en werkcondities, maar ook om hoe ver ze wilden gaan met hun sexy kostuums.
Dat heet dan gelukkig zijn
Halfnaakt door de lucht zwieren was geen probleem, maar een aangetaste eerbaarheid wel. Om deze te ‘beschermen’ – of eerder te controleren – stonden in dezelfde contracten strenge regels hoe zich te gedragen op en buiten het circusterrein. De clausule bepaalde hun bedtijd, de dresscode na hun werkuren, met wie ze wel en vooral geen sociaal contact mochten hebben. Zelfs toelaten dat een man je jas omdeed was verboden. In het contract van de mannelijke artiesten stond ook een gelijkaardig reglement, maar deze was toch aanzienlijk losser. Zo was het geen enkel probleem om als mannelijk vrijgezel in elke stad een liefje te hebben.
De regels waren extra streng voor de balletmeisjes. Zo lezen we in het contract van Kathy Edwards, een balletmeisje voor Ringling Brothers in 1913, enkele van deze bijkomende regels: ‘mannelijk gezelschap tijdens en na de werkuren ten strengste verboden; flirterig gedrag ten alle tijde en waar dan ook verboden; het excuus van een ‘toevallige ontmoeting’ met mannelijke leden van de Show Company is niet acceptabel.’ De lijst sluit af met: ‘Goeie orde en goed gedrag zijn noodzakelijk als je comfortabel en gelukkig wil zijn.’ Om het publiek te overtuigen van de deugdzaamheid van circusvrouwen publiceerden de circusmedia van tijd tot tijd deze gedragsregels.
Uiteindelijk toont de zichzelf tegensprekende houding van het circus tegenover vrouwen dat de samenleving evenzeer dubbelzinnig stond tegenover de groeiende deelname van vrouwen in het publieke leven. In tegenstelling tot de overvloedige marketingstrategieën om (schaars geklede) circusartiestes te verantwoorden, voelde het circusmanagement weinig noodzaak om de aanwezigheid van mannelijke performers in de publieke wereld te verdedigen.
Er gold een duidelijke hiërarchie bij de dames in het Amerikaanse circus. Onderaan de ladder had je het ‘koor’, met honderden jonge, mooie ‘balletmeisjes’. Ze hadden de minste vaardigheden en het laagste loon. Bovenaan stonden de acrobaten, de honden- en olifantentrainers, voltigeartiesten, ‘big cat’ trainers, luchtacrobaten en clowns. In elke categorie had je nog eens de grote sterren, die uiteraard boven alles en iedereen verheven waren. Dit complexe ordeningssysteem bepaalde eveneens je slaapplaats en -comfort, je loon, de duur van je act en welke plek je kreeg in de piste, het programma, de kleedtent.
Eén blik in de kleedtent en je kon meteen zien wie zich waar op de ladder bevond. Elke artieste had een genummerde koffer, georganiseerd volgens een code die het verschil in status respecteerde. Gedurende het ganse seizoen, bij elke stop, werden de koffers in vier rijen geplaatst. De eerste rij was deze van de sterartiestes, meestal voltige- en luchtacrobates. Zij hadden de meeste ruimte en de meeste privacy. Hoe verder verwijderd je koffer van deze zogenaamde queen’s row, hoe lager je rang. In de vierde en laatste rij, tegen de buitenwand van de tent, stonden de koffers van de ballet- en levende-standbeeldmeisjes, en de performers van de tweederangs acts. Zij werden blootgesteld aan regen, wind, passanten en onwelkome gluurders.
