Accordeonist Tuur Florizoone (41) stond in zijn jonge jaren met één been in het circus en met het andere in muziek. Hij behoorde tot de eerste generatie leerlingen van Cirkus in Beweging en ook zijn jazztrio Tricycle, dat momenteel toert voor zijn twintigste verjaardag, is in de schoot van de Leuvense circusschool geboren. Zoals de muziek van Tuur zich niet zomaar laat vangen onder de noemer jazz, is ook het werk van Alexander Vantournhout (31) meer dan gewoon circus. Met zijn achtergrond in dans heeft de maker van onder meer Screws en Red Haired Men een open vizier voor beweging maar ook voor alles wat klinkt. Een ontmoeting tussen deze twee virtuozen kon dus niet uitblijven.
Plaats van afspraak is Allee du Kaai, een in graffiti overgoten vrijplaats langs het kanaal in Brussel, daags nadat storm Chiara er haar slag had geslagen. Dat leidde tot onvoorziene omstandigheden en probleemoplossend handelen, maar gelukkig zijn beide heren het improviseren niet vreemd, de ene in noten, de ander met zijn lichaam. Geen wonder dat juist daarover het gesprek van start gaat.
Alexander “Ik moest denken aan een quote van een jazzlegende – vraag me niet wie – die gaat als volgt: ‘je kunt geen foute noot spelen, maar de noot die je erna speelt, kan wel fout zijn’. Fouten zijn uiteindelijk enkel zichtbaar in een context van juistheden.”
Tuur “Ik speel al sinds mijn vijfde muziek: piano, drums en pas veel later accordeon. Omdat er in die tijd weinig accordeonisten waren, werd ik vrij snel gevraagd door goeie muzikanten om samen te spelen. Ik had veel muzikale bagage, maar beheerste het instrument niet goed. Ik heb geleerd dat ik foute noten gewoon opnieuw zo moest spelen, dan klinken ze juist (lacht). Dat is de vrijheid die ik neem. Toen we recent met Tricycle in de Ancienne Belgique speelden, liep de improvisatie onder ons drieën uit de hand: ik heb de boel min of meer stilgelegd om opnieuw te beginnen. En dan hoor je aan de reacties van het publiek dat ze het niet eens hebben gemerkt. Er af en toe eens flink naast zitten, moet kunnen. Ook in het leven is dat zo.”
Alexander “Het is fijn om muzikanten te horen zoeken. Zoals een politicus die twijfelt over zijn eigen mening, zit daar veel schoonheid in.”
Tuur “Ik herinner me dat ik als jonge twintiger een concert speelde met wijlen Garrett List, een Amerikaanse trombonist en zanger die lesgaf aan het conservatorium van Luik. We hadden niet veel meer dan twee nummers op papier, waarmee we twee sets moesten vullen. Dan kun je niet anders dan improviseren. Een van de nummers was een melodie van mij, waarop hij een tekst had geschreven. Na de intro hoorde ik hem zeggen: ‘D*mn, I forgot the lyrics’, en hij liep de zaal uit om die te gaan zoeken. Na ongeveer tien minuten was hij terug. Ik had geen andere keuze dan die vol te spelen.”
Alexander “Wat ik graag doe in veel voorstellingen is een evenwicht zoeken tussen de spelers. Ik creëer een interdependency tussen de medespelers en een intradependency met een object. Dat deed ik onder meer in een duet in Screws. Door de acrobaten stijgijzers aan te binden, is de adhesie met de grond plots veel sterker. Interessant aan dat proces is dat improvisatie ontstaat van zodra er iets misloopt, en ook daar komt de interdependency weer naar boven. Je improviseert in een samenspel met elkaar, niet op je eigen. Op die manier kan je weinig individuele fouten maken, maar zijn het eerder systeemfouten die je moet oplossen. Er ontstaat een spel waarbij je dan niet tegen elkaar speelt, maar tegen het systeem.”
Tuur “En via improvisatie kom je op iets uit dat je behoudt in de voorstelling?”
Alexander “Soms wel, maar niet noodzakelijk. Bij momenten van artistieke crisis probeer ik velerlei strategieën uit om resultaat te bekomen. Ik hanteer de methode van ‘throwing something against the wall and seeing what sticks’. Daar kan improvisatie uitkomen, maar evengoed volgt er een brainstorm.”
Tuur “Je zou ook het voorbereidend werk aan je bureau kunnen zien als een mentale improvisatieoefening, als het creatieve brein alle opties overloopt voor een voorstelling. Ik componeer tegenwoordig dagelijks, bijvoorbeeld voor radiodocumentaires of voor film. Ik krijg dan een voorzet door het verhaal dat daaraan vasthangt, en moet dat in klank omzetten. Dat begint bij mij met improvisatie, waarbij ik op zoek ga naar het gevoel dat ik moet vertolken.”
Alexander “Het zijn zulke opdrachten die ik op mijn manier ook nodig heb om te kunnen improviseren. Er moet een aanleiding zijn. Improviseren zonder doel is mijn ding niet, en in een lege studio staan zonder plan vind ik ronduit deprimerend. Wat ik wel soms doe is een soort scored improvisation met meerdere artiesten, een gestructureerde en georkestreerde improvisatie.”
Tuur “Voor het festival Leuven Jazz ben ik gevraagd om een muziekgroep samen te stellen om circusacts op Cirque Composé te begeleiden. Ik ken de acts niet, maar ik herinner me van mijn eigen circusjeugd dat het belangrijk is dat de muziek van je act enigszins correspondeert met je bewegingen. Dat ligt nu moeilijk, want behalve de dag zelf zal er niet gerepeteerd worden en zullen wij met de muzikanten praktisch alles improviseren. Een spannende opdracht, maar ik hou wel van wat chaos.”
Alexander “Het gevaar van dat concept zou kunnen zijn dat het eenrichtingsverkeer wordt, dat enkel de muzikanten reageren op wat ze zien en de artiesten niet op wat ze horen. Mij interesseert vooral het tweerichtingsverkeer.”
Tuur “Dat risico zit er inderdaad in, maar misschien staan de artiesten zelf ook wel open voor improvisatie. Het zou fijn zijn als ze die sprong waagden.”
Alexander “Op zich laten circus en magie zich moeilijk improviseren omdat je werkt met cellen. Een eenvoudige dansbeweging kan slechts een seconde duren. Een circustruc duurt al direct meerdere seconden. Je hebt daardoor een beperkt aantal entiteiten of cellen die je hoogstens van plaats kunt wisselen. En ook in de manier waarop je performt ben je redelijk beperkt, wat ik overigens wel heel interessant vind. Een circustruc is als een muzikale frase, maar dan een waarvan je de noten niet kunt wijzigen. Op dat vlak zijn jullie veel vrijer.”
Alexander “In Red Haired Men gebruik ik muziek van Mozart, onder meer de variaties op ‘Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman’ (‘Altijd is Kortjakje ziek’). Interessant aan dat stuk is dat een heel simpel, toegankelijk kinderliedje zo complex wordt uitgewerkt in twaalf variaties. Wij transformeren onze bewegingen net zoals de melodie transformeert. We hebben het stuk structureel geanalyseerd en de muzikale frases gelinkt aan acrobatische bewegingen. Dat heb ik geleerd in P.A.R.T.S. (dansschool van Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, red.). Wat mij bekommert is hoeveel van dat proces nog leesbaar is voor het publiek, ook al wil ik meer dan enkel een werkproces representeren in mijn voorstelling. Ik vraag me af hoe dat bij jou zit. Hoeveel vangt de luisteraar van jouw muziek nog op van het creatieproces?”
Tuur “Die vraag krijg ik wel vaker. De reden dat mijn muziek niet helemaal onder het etiket van jazz thuishoort, heeft daarmee te maken. Bij mij is de structuur van de muziek minder transparant dan bij traditionele jazz, waarbij na de intro een thema klinkt met een vast akkoordenschema waarop dan geïmproviseerd wordt, terwijl de bassist en drummer voor een stabiele basis zorgen. Ik heb enkele manieren om los te komen van die strakke structuur. Als ik een improvisatie begeleid, speel ik bijvoorbeeld extra muzikale motieven, zodat de luisteraar niet doorheeft wanneer het thema eindigt en de improvisatie begint. Of ik leg juist alles stil. Bij sommige van mijn groepen, zoals Tricycle, maken we doorgaans wel heldere afspraken. Zo weten we vaak perfect waar we willen uitkomen, maar kunnen we op de weg wel gaan improviseren. We bepalen dan niet alleen de structuur, maar ook de stijl: de ene keer niet te dissonant, de andere keer juist extreem dissonant. Uiteindelijk maak je een verhaal met de groep, en dat verhaal primeert op de excellentie van de muzikant.”
Alexander “Ik probeer altijd transparant te zijn naar de toeschouwer. Ik heb de indruk dat beweging moeilijk leesbaar is voor het publiek, misschien omdat je een beweging slechter onthoudt dan een melodie? Bewegingen kunnen ook meerdere betekenislagen in zich dragen, daarom probeer ik die transparantie te bewaren: dit is het object, dit is de toeschouwer, dit is de onderzoeksvraag van waaruit het narratief zich ontvouwt. Ik heb op dat vlak veel geleerd van de voorstelling Caprices, die ik maakte op muziek van de Italiaanse componist Salvatore Sciarrino. Toen heb ik het publiek zwaar overschat. In één van de muziekstukken, genaamd Anamorfosi, combineert Sciarrino pianomuziek van Ravel, namelijk Jeux d’eau met het thema van Singin’ in the Rain. Ik was aan het dansen op het deuntje van Singin’ in the Rain maar het publiek kon die melodie niet uit de muziek halen. Daardoor werden mijn bewegingen op tal van verschillende manieren geïnterpreteerd door de toeschouwer. Je kan heel veel zeggen met beweging, maar het is moeilijk om je publiek te sturen in wat je wil zeggen.”
Tuur “Ik kom net van het conservatorium van Gent. In de les schreef ik een gemuteerde versie van Happy Birthday to you op het bord, want er was een jarige bij, met een complexe harmonie onder. We hebben een kwartier gewerkt rond dat stukje muziek en nog had niemand door dat het om die melodie ging. Pas toen we het begonnen te zingen, begon het stilaan te dagen. De studenten waren gewoon zo gefocust op de harmonie dat ze het niet eerder doorhadden. Dus ik begrijp dat het publiek soms misleid kan worden.”
Alexander “Zelf heb ik ook op het podium geïmproviseerd, namelijk na het slotapplaus van mijn solovoorstelling ANECKXANDER (een samenwerking met dramaturge Bauke Lievens, red.). De voorstelling duurde 50 minuten, maar ik ging door met improviseren tot de laatste toeschouwer de tribune had verlaten. Dat kon soms nog een uur of twee duren. Ik heb daar uiteindelijk ook veel materiaal gevonden dat ik later in de voorstelling integreerde.”
Tuur “Jij hebt dus al ervaring als solist. Ik onderneem volgend jaar voor de eerste keer een solotoer. De intrinsieke boodschap die ik de luisteraar meegeef als ik alleen op een podium sta, is: het kan ook met minder. Ik probeer magie te creëren met het weinige dat ik heb. Je hebt toch ook niet altijd vier wielen nodig wat je met één wiel ook kan doen? (lachje) Bovendien probeer ik ondanks de druk van het publiek relaxed te blijven en het waardevolle idee van trial and error aan te tonen, van geven en nemen. En ik koester de harmonie van mensen die samen naar muziek luisteren. Dat is uiteindelijk een plek waar geen ruzie wordt gemaakt. Op een bepaalde manier draag ik dan bij aan de vrede.”
Alexander “Dat is iets wat ik soms mis bij artiesten, dat ze zich niet bewust zijn van hun positie. Een solist kan solitair zijn, kan desnoods een persoonlijk verhaal brengen, maar de sterkte van het solospel zit vooral in de relatie tussen de solist en het publiek. Er ontstaat een hiërarchie: het publiek heeft een zekere macht tegenover de solist, op het dominante af. Als je met twee op een podium staat, is de onderlinge link heel sterk aanwezig, wat tot competitiviteit kan leiden. Met drie of vijf heb je meer samenhang, met zes eerder een soort leger. Het is interessant wat die constellaties inherent met zich meebrengen.”
Tuur “Hoe kies jij de mensen uit met wie je wil werken?”
Alexander “Meestal ken ik de performers waarmee ik werk omdat ik eraan heb lesgegeven, maar nu ga ik voor de eerste keer audities organiseren. Dat is erg moeilijk. Er zijn al achthonderd kandidaturen, want in de danswereld gaat het zo snel. Je kijkt naar al die filmpjes waar je veel uit leert, maar je kan niet anders dan voor een stuk ook intuïtief bepalen wie je aanneemt.”
Tuur “Je hangt natuurlijk voor een lange periode aan die mensen vast.”
Alexander “Inderdaad, het moeten echt betrouwbare personen zijn, met de juiste artistieke affiniteit. En misschien is een aangename persoonlijkheid wel de belangrijkste eigenschap van een artiest. Je moet er acht à negen uur mee in de auto willen doorbrengen.”
Tuur “Ik kies mijn muzikanten op de eerste plaats op dat sociale aspect uit. Hoe staat die persoon in het leven en kan ik er iets van leren? En natuurlijk moeten ze ook goed muziek spelen. Nu ik mijn solotoer voorbereid, is mijn principe: als ik alleen ben, moet ik geen afspraken maken. Daar moet ik optimaal van genieten.”
Alexander “Alleen toeren is misschien wel een drempel?”
Tuur “Ik ken muzikanten die afzien van de eenzaamheid. Zelf heb ik heb tussen september en nu iets van een zestig optredens gedaan, maar altijd in gezelschap. Ik toer nog altijd ontzettend graag, maar ik heb twee jonge kinderen. Dat maakt het een pak moeilijker. Ik moet zien dat ik mijn agenda niet te vol steek omwille van hen.”
Alexander “De eerste jaren dat je rondreist zijn zeer romantisch en dan durf je al eens een dag langer op je locatie blijven, maar tegenwoordig wil ik toch zo snel als mogelijk terug thuis zijn. Je kent op tournee ook heel grote ups en downs, onder meer omdat het publiek wisselt. Soms speel je voor uitverkochte zalen, soms voor een man of dertig. Het overkomt iedereen. Het leven van de rockstar, daar wacht ik niet meer op. Veel mensen doen dat graag, maar ik heb zelf mijn limieten gesteld: slechts twee intercontinentale reizen per jaar. Het heeft iets absurd: soms ben je uren onderweg voor één optreden. Het is ook ongezond. Ik probeer gezond te leven, maar ’s avonds laat vergrijp ik me toch aan falafel en nootjes.”
Tuur “Ik begrijp wat je bedoelt, maar ik zou toch graag wat meer buiten België en Nederland spelen. Muziek is tenslotte universeel. Ik zit nogal snel vast in een circuit waar je standaard voor dezelfde mensen speelt in dezelfde zalen. Gelukkig speel ik af en toe in Wallonië. Daar hebben de mensen nog een andere kijk op de wereld die mijn geest verfrist.”
Alexander “Dat vind ik zo spijtig, dat ik bijna niet in Wallonië speel, gemiddeld slechts een keer om de twee jaar. In Vlaanderen en Nederland speel ik dan nog vooral voor een blanke middenklasse. Op dat vlak loopt Frankrijk voor op ons. Wat ik een beetje hekel in Vlaanderen is het gebrek aan diversiteit in de cultuurprogrammatie. Hiphop heeft hier bijvoorbeeld geen plaats in de kunstinstellingen, bij ons staat normatieve dans en normatief theater nog steeds centraal, en dan sluit je vanzelf verschillende doelgroepen uit.”
Tuur “Ik zie ook meer en meer een probleem in de leeftijd van het publiek. Op een uitzondering na, is het moeilijk om jonge mensen te bereiken. In Arnhem speelde ik in de kerk voor veelal oudere mensen. Rond die kerk waren de cafés gevuld met jonge mensen. We hadden dus eigenlijk in de cafés moeten spelen!”
Alexander “Maar de muren van de kerk zijn te dik.”
Tuur “Heb jij last van stress voor een optreden?”
Alexander “Niet op het moment van de waarheid, maar in de voorbereidingsfase toch wel. Ik heb al grijs haar op mijn eenendertigste. Ik heb een drang om altijd alles goed te willen doen. Jij?”
Tuur “Behalve wat gezonde spanning als je speelt met iemand naar wie je opkijkt, heb ik nooit last gehad van podiumstress. Het is goed mogelijk dat ik dat aan mijn circusverleden te danken heb. Ik herinner me een optreden met onze productiegroep van de circusschool in een psychiatrische instelling: totale chaos achter de schermen omdat een van de patiënten terugkwam van het toilet en zijn broek nog naar beneden hing. Dan leer je dus om onvoorziene situaties op te lossen.”
Alexander “Dat is een zeer goede leerschool voor improvisatie. Ik heb de stiel geleerd in de vijf jaar dat ik op straat speelde, waar je ook geregeld onverwachte problemen op je bord krijgt. Ik ben er wel mee gestopt. Het is moeilijk om daar een verhaal te vertellen, omdat de aandacht van het publiek constant wordt afgeleid. Anderzijds is het voordeel van straatcircus dat je echt alle lagen van de bevolking bereikt.”
Tuur “Ik heb ook op straat gespeeld, maar niet lang. Ik ben ondertussen een beetje een snob geworden omdat ik verkies om in perfecte omstandigheden op te treden. Heel recent speelde ik nog eens op een straatfeest in Sint-Gillis en daar had ik een aanvaring met een agressieve man. Dan kan je geen kant meer op, zeker niet met zo’n logge accordeon om je lijf…”
