Lien Drent en Kris Hoeylaerts geven les in de nog jonge circusschool Locorotondo in Herentals. Voorlopig geen technische uitschieters, wel een klassiek aanbod van gewone circustechnieken. Alles is ook nog klein en overzichtelijk, maar naar verluidt zijn ze wel ‘goe bezig’ in De Vossenberg. CircusMagazine duwde een micro onder de neus van initiatiefnemer en bezieler Kris en geloof ons vrij, het ongebreidelde enthousiasme zit zelfs in zijn stemtimbre gebakken.
Wat versta jij onder het woord ‘circus’?
Kris Hoeylaerts: “Circus is vooral een expressievorm, een manier om emoties te uiten. Het kan je vervolmaken als persoon. Je kan hier rustig je eigen talenten ontdekken en laten evolueren zonder enige competitiedruk. Veel kinderen knappen daar immers op af in bepaalde sportdisciplines. Je bewijzen ten opzichte van anderen hoeft hier niet. Je kan hier wel scoren voor jezelf en daar terecht blij om zijn. En ook zonder dat je zo nodig dit talent moet exploiteren of aan anderen moet laten zien. Bij zelfontplooiing is het niet nodig dat de hele wereld dit weet.“
Je bent nog niet zolang geleden gestart met het circusatelier in Herentals?
“Ik studeerde in verscheidene Vlaamse steden en eindigde mijn studies met de Formation Pédagogique in Brussel (opleiding tot circuspedagoog in de École de Cirque de Bruxelles, red.). Daarna gaf ik circusworkshops en -initiaties en deed interims als onderwijzer en leraar zedenleer. Sinds vorig schooljaar werk ik in andere circusateliers zoals Cirkus in Beweging en ‘t Sirk. Ik leerde er hoe ik het zelf kon aanpakken en soms ook hoe ik het niet moest doen in mijn eigen schooltje. Extra knowhow kreeg ik via collega’s, het Kunstenloket en het Circuscentrum. Maar ook op logistiek vlak kreeg ik meteen een aanmoedigende start. We huren nu een mooie turnzaal met tumbling baan, trampolines, een goede turnvloer en een valkuil. Vanuit de cafetaria kunnen de ouders het hele gebeuren volgen: dat sterkt hun enthousiasme, hetgeen ons dan weer extra energie geeft.”
Dus, een stevige background en ideale werkomstandigheden: alles zit mee?
“Ja, bijna alles zit mee. Het is nog klein, compact en overzichtelijk. We hebben een gebruiksvriendelijke website die wekelijks heel wat hits oplevert. Ik beantwoord nog zelf alle vragen; een goede communicatie is tegenwoordig onontbeerlijk. Verder is het ook belangrijk dat we niet te snel groeien en dat iedereen enthousiast blijft. Dat levert mij ook de nodige vrijwilligers, want zonder is het wel moeilijker. Op zondagavond komen sommige ouders zelfs mee oefenen met hun kinderen en dat is prettig. Dat levert ook mooie momenten op. We hebben nu een zestigtal leden en twee lesgevers, Lien en ikzelf. Op de vrije oefenmomenten komen er zo’n tien tot twintig personen die besmet zijn door de circusmicrobe oefenen. Iedereen is welkom.”
Maar er is meer?
“Ja, in twee secundaire scholen geven we ook tijdens de middagpauze les aan een groep leerlingen. En er is een lagere school in Herentals waar we tijdens de naschoolse opvang aan twee groepen kinderen lesgeven in klassieke circustechnieken. De directrice maakte zelfs persoonlijk reclame voor ons in alle klassen. Dat we zeer lokaal bezig zijn is zeker een sterkte. De Kempen zijn op dit vlak bijna onontgonnen terrein.”
Zullen we het dan klein en overzichtelijk houden en vooral niet te veel reclame maken?
“Geïnteresseerden zijn natuurlijk altijd welkom. Op 21 februari houden we opendeurdag in de nieuwe schouwburg in Herentals. Niet vergeten te vermelden alstublieft!”
