Dat we in ons land sterke vrouwen gehad hebben, in de letterlijke betekenis van het woord, lijdt geen twijfel. De meest gekende was Maria Zachritz, in 1865 geboren in Antwerpen als dochter van Beierse reizende artiesten. Vrouwen- maar vooral circuskenner André De Poorter gaat dieper in op deze Miss Athléta en trekt het thema dan open naar een algemene beschouwing over vrouwen in het circus.
Miss Athléta en consorten
Als kind trad Maria Zachritz op als contorsioniste, maar al vlug bleek dat ze liever krachtatlete werd. In die discipline werd ze een beroemdheid, waardoor ze als ‘sterkste vrouw ter wereld’ dikbetaalde contracten kreeg in circussen en theaters, zowel in ons land als in de rest van Europa en zelfs Amerika. Als Miss Athléta jongleerde ze onder meer met 20 kg wegende kogels en wist ze te verbazen door het op de rug ronddragen in de piste van een ijzeren staaf waaraan vier mannen hingen. Na gemaakt fortuin ging ze op haar veertigste rentenieren en trok ze zich samen met haar man terug in hun villa in Sint-Niklaas. Wel kreeg ze waardige opvolgsters in haar drie dochters Brada, Louise en Anna die hun moeder in kracht en populariteit evenwel nooit evenaarden.
In de acrobatie zijn er nogal wat vrouwen geweest die hun ‘mannetje’ konden staan. Zo waren er bijvoorbeeld atlete Jeanne Savoir van de Riovas en Bertha, het vrouwelijke krachtwonder van het Trio Geerts, die jaren geleden als ‘onderman’ of porteur fungeerden en waarbij ze evenwicht, elegantie en kracht verenigden.
Geen mannenwereld
Als we even de rol van de vrouw in het circus onder de loep nemen, stellen we vast dat ze op het artistieke vlak meestal evenveel kansen kregen als mannen. Circus is nooit alleen maar een mannenwereld geweest. In de negentiende eeuw, toen circusspektakels hoofdzakelijk uit paardennummers bestonden, trof men onder de artiesten ook steeds dames die hun ruiterbehendigheden demonstreerden. De latere acrobatentroepen werden meestal gevormd door een echtpaar, broers en/of zussen en kinderen. Iedereen in het gezin van een circusdirecteur of van een artiest kreeg de kans of moest één en liefst meerdere disciplines aanleren. Het geslacht, jongen of meisje, speelde daarbij geen rol. Als het dan ging om draadlopen of contorsionisme ging de voorkeur zelfs eerder naar de meisjes.
Om als artiest(e) de top te bereiken, kregen vrouwen steeds evenveel kansen. Er zijn er nogal wat die op die manier zelfstandig een eigen carrière hebben uitgebouwd. Een goed voorbeeld daarvan is Gina Giovannis die als handstandspecialiste in 1972 op tienjarige leeftijd debuteerde bij Wiener Circus, een internationale carrière uitbouwde en nog steeds in het vak zit.
De vrouw aan de haard?
Verschillen zaten er meestal elders. Als we de circusdirecties bekijken stellen we vast dat het steeds mannen waren die de zaak leidden. Vrouwen kwamen enkel aan het hoofd ervan te staan wanneer hun echtgenoot overleed. Veelal waren ze op die taak niet voorbereid en niet sterk genoeg om het circusbedrijf overeind te houden, één uitzondering niet te na gesproken. Maria Leschan heeft, na de dood van haar man in 1957, het Circus Jhony met sterke hand verder geleid tot in 1980. Ziekte en ouderdom (82 jaar) deden haar besluiten ermee te stoppen.
De taken, buiten het artistieke, waren wel verschillend. Mannen dienden mee te helpen bij de op- en afbouw van de tent, en waren ook handiger wanneer het ging om voorwerpen of attributen ineen te knutselen. De dames daarentegen stonden in voor het eten en het maken of herstellen van kostuums. Jongens hadden wel het voorrecht om te mogen uitgaan, van meisjes werd verwacht dat ze thuisbleven.
