Het opiniestuk van Julie Descamps in het vorige CircusMagazine, waarin ze het gebrek aan jonge artiesten met ballen aan hun lijf en de rol van de circushogescholen hierin aankaartte (‘Artiesten van de toekomst… da’s zo jaren ‘90’), weekte heel wat reacties los. Sommigen kropen spontaan in de pen, anderen reageerden na kort aandringen. Een bloemlezing.
>> De schrijfster van het artikel zet drie circusscholen naast elkaar – ESAC, Codarts en ACaPA – en geeft aan dat ze de afstudeerders van deze opleidingen weinig vernieuwend vindt. Het zijn geen circusmakers. Ze vraagt zich af of dit aan de methodes van de drie scholen ligt. Wat mij betreft een interessant vervolgartikel waard! Wil Julie weten welke methodes de scholen hanteren en tot welke resultaten dit leidt? Ze is van harte welkom dit bij ACaPA verder te onderzoeken om zo haar vooronderstellingen te onderbouwen.
De ontwikkeling van een circusartiest (of -maker, als dit je voorkeur heeft) stopt niet waar de school ophoudt. Hij krijgt zijn diploma en heeft alle vaardigheden ontwikkeld die de opleiding nodig acht om zich staande te houden in het werkveld en om daar zo goed mogelijk inzetbaar te zijn – aan hem nu de keuze hoe en waar. Gelukkig zijn er plaatsen als het Circuscentrum die een brug slaan tussen opleiding en werkveld.
Als opleiding zijn wij doorlopend in overleg met het werkveld – bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van onze werkveldcommissie – over de kwaliteit van ons onderwijs en het afstudeerniveau. De resultaten van onze studenten zijn goed en ze zijn overal ter wereld aan het werk (solo of in compagnieën van XY tot Platzak). ACaPA levert jaarlijks tien tot vijftien circusperformers af met hun eigen ideeën en stijl. Ik volg onze alumni nauwgezet en zie ze altijd graag terug om ervaringen uit te wisselen met onze studenten.
Het zou wellicht interessant zijn om deze discussie op grotere schaal te voeren. ACaPA is te allen tijde bereid in discussie te gaan, maar de vorm van een ingezonden brief heeft niet mijn voorkeur. Ik zou graag een rol spelen in de organisatie van een open discussie.

>> Misschien is het de kunstenaar in mij, of mijn bevragende karakter, maar ik sta heel erg achter de uitspraken van de schrijfster van het artikel. Naar mijn mening is het doel van de opleiding in essentie om zelfstandige circusartiesten af te leveren. Dit betekent dat de ontwikkeling van een artistieke visie en beeldtaal centraal moet staan in de opleiding. Nu zijn dat echter de technische vakken en training. Maar het is lastig om gedurende een technische les artistiek bezig te zijn. Ja, je wordt topsporter. Maar is het dat wat we willen? Neen, we moeten kennismaken met onszelf als kunstenaars en ons medium bevragen. Dat zijn de belangrijkste elementen in circus ARTS onderwijs.

>> Ik las deze ochtend tijdens het ontbijt jouw artikel uit CircusMagazine. Ik vond het eerlijk waar zeer goed! Overal moet af en toe eens een kritische wind waaien om patronen te doorbreken en evolutie te stimuleren. Maar het neemt toch wel enige durf om jezelf zo uit te drukken en vandaar mijn mailtje. Proficiat en bedankt voor je nuchter, sterk en kritisch artikel. Het zal ongetwijfeld een stimulans zijn voor sommigen om hun blik op circus en de maatschappij meer door te drukken in hun shows.

>> Je artikel in CircusMagazine heeft mij doen nadenken. Bedankt daarvoor. Want ik vraag mij zelf soms af waar ik als artiest mee bezig ben en waar ik naartoe wil. Dan denk ik aan mijn parcours tot hiertoe – waaronder vier jaar ACaPA, verschillende gezelschappen, zelfs traditioneel circus – en blijft de vraag branden wie ik ben als artiest en wat ik wil doen. Ik ben mijn eigen handstandnummer met hoed beu, dat is enkel techniek met een mooi muziekje erbij. Momenteel werk ik voor een fancy gezelschap als marionet die een ander zijn choreografie moet uitvoeren, eigen creatieve inbreng nihil. En dat is absoluut niet wat ik wil. Je artikel werkt motiverend om zelf weer te gaan creëren. Deze winter volg ik enkele workshops, ik moet me verder ontwikkelen en voeding opdoen. Ik hoop dat andere jongeren die afstuderen of zelfs nog op school zitten ook geïnspireerd raken om aan zelfonderzoek te doen als artiest.

>> Kritiek vanuit de professionele wereld kan altijd op de volle aandacht van de ESAC rekenen. Feedback zet ons er namelijk toe aan stil te staan bij wat we doen en onze programma’s verder te verfijnen. Maar deze opinie is sloganesk, grossiert in vooronderstellingen en doet nogal ‘Testaankoop’ aan.
Dit artikel haalt de kunst en het kunstonderwijs door elkaar. Sinds wanneer levert een kunstschool geslaagde artiesten af? Sinds wanneer is het afstudeerproject een volwaardig oeuvre waaruit de ontwikkeling van een project voortvloeit? Het afstudeerproject is een circusnummer. Het is de neerslag van een zo goed mogelijk afgewerkte act die de springplank moet worden van de artiest in spe. Het is een momentopname.
Een kunstschool heeft als missie jongvolwassenen technische, artistieke, creatieve, reflectieve, inventieve, … tools aan te reiken. Die jongeren zullen wel degelijk hun persoonlijkheid en hun artistieke projecten blijven ontwikkelen terwijl ze timmeren aan hun carrière en naam proberen te maken. Getuige daarvan de vele afgestudeerden die de productie, de programmering en de voorstellingen bij toonaangevende circushuizen, zoals ook het Circuscentrum, mee in goede banen leiden. Ja, onze afgestudeerden trekken weleens naar het buitenland. En nee, we kunnen ons geen betere ambassadeurs wensen. Meer nog, we zijn trots op hen.
Als we dit artikel mogen geloven, zouden de begeleiders van ESAC de artistieke persoonlijkheid van onze afgestudeerden insnoeren. Welnu, een van onze begeleiders heeft pas van een andere school – een gevestigde waarde – het aanbod gekregen om daar zijn werk voort te zetten… Kunnen we het alstublieft een beetje ernstig houden?

>> Vooral met betrekking tot het ‘opleiden tot kunstenaar’ mis ik inderdaad bepaalde elementen in de opleiding. Er zou veel meer aandacht besteed kunnen worden aan de ontwikkeling van een identiteit als artiest. Wie ben je, waar kom je vandaan, waar wil je naartoe, wat is belangrijk voor jou, wat raakt je, wat maakt je boos, wat maakt je blij, wat wil je zeggen, wat wil je delen, wat wil je bereiken? Welke middelen zet je daarvoor in? Waarom kies je voor circus als vorm?
Bij heel veel werk van studenten mis ik maatschappelijke relevantie. Het gaat vaak over de grote thema’s in het leven (liefde, eenzaamheid) of gewoon over knappe trucs in een leuke choreo op mooie muziek, maar het heeft weinig te maken met dat wat er speelt in de maatschappij, iets aan de kaak stellen, het publiek tot inzichten brengen (op een toegankelijke, vermakelijke manier).
Ik was direct na mijn afstuderen niet in staat dergelijk werk te maken. Door de prioriteiten binnen de opleiding lag de nadruk heel erg op technisch en fysiek ontwikkelen. Ik heb kritiek gekregen op mijn technische competenties, mijn gebrek aan kracht en mijn gewicht/omvang, maar zelden heeft iemand tegen me uitgesproken dat wat ik maakte weinig interessant was en hoe ik dáár wellicht iets aan kon doen.

>> De perfecte circusartiest zou eigenlijk zo sterk moeten zijn als De Hulk en zo lenig als een rekker in combinatie met een algemene kennis over… alles. Naast het ontwikkelen van kennis over circus, moet er ook een artistieke visie ontstaan. Liefst zo snel mogelijk zodat je na de school direct aan de slag kan als afgewerkte circusartiest. Goeie grap. Het ontwikkelen van een visie vergt tijd. En die tijd krijgen we tegenwoordig niet.

>> Circus is een ambacht dat jarenlang ijzersterke discipline vraagt. Studenten pamperen is niet aan de orde. In amper drie jaar speel je drie groepsvoorstellingen, dansen, theaterstukjes en persoonlijke projecten. Daarbovenop komen ook nog de open stages, natuurlijk. Het gros van die voorstellingen ziet de buitenwereld niet, waar dat jong geweld zijn stem zoekt en een eigen weg.
Voor individuele artistieke ontwikkeling is er in de scholen inderdaad te weinig ruimte. Maar laat ons niet vergeten dat de scholen ons vooral een technische basis mee geven. Artisticiteit is een zoektocht van jaren. Helaas betekent het einde van de circusschool voor velen een abrupte overgang van verwarmde trainingszaal naar de wachtzalen van RVA en VDAB. Circus is hot maar wat hout om de winter door te komen is onontbeerlijk.

>> Julie Descamps gooit een stok in het hoenderhok. Het is een oprechte persoonlijke mening en als die helpt om een constructieve discussie uit te lokken, dan wil ik graag op deze uitnodiging ingaan. Door enkel schouderklopjes uit te delen kan je volgens mij geen boeiende potgrond voor een landschap van rakende (circus)kunst creëren, wat nochtans de taak van een circushogeschool zou moeten zijn. De schriftuur in het circus is voor verbetering vatbaar. Niemand die beweert dat alle hedendaagse circusacts en -voorstellingen perfect zijn, toch?
Maar… het begrip circusdramaturgie, met de bijbehorende job, heeft zich nu ook een plaats weten te verwerven, tot op het informele discussieforum toe. De kunde van de dramaturg steunt erop om de juiste vragen op het juiste moment te stellen. Mocht ik bijvoorbeeld als artistiek hoofd van de circusacademie van een kunsthogeschool de inhoud van de opleiding niet regelmatig in vraag stellen, dan zit onze opleiding met een probleem. De opleiding vraagt elke student om zichzelf, als maker in de piste, in vraag te stellen. De circustechnische docenten werken op de analyse van de beweging en zien erop toe om het verschil tussen berekend risico en reëel gevaar bij te brengen. Inhoudelijk vult de opleiding dit aan door onophoudelijk het hoe en waarom als drijfveer voor de noodzaak tot expressie aan te reiken.
Leren begint met het grote gelijk weg te gooien. Dat beleef ik aan een ronde discussietafel met alle docenten en door de directe vraagstelling vanuit het administratieve team. U mag ervan uitgaan dat wij voor ons zelf even kritisch trachten te zijn als voor de studenten. Circus moet durven om zich verder heruit te vinden en een hogeschool moet zich daarbij de vraag stellen wat zij in het geheel kan betekenen. Spelen en figuurlijk op de bek vallen maken daar deel van uit. Een harde leerschool met scherpe keuzes, graag. Liefst gevoed door op een objectieve basis feedback te leren geven en met stof tot nadenken als eerste resultaat.
Het huidige discours over de circusdramaturgie maakt mij echter wrevelig omdat er bij de roepers om vernieuwing vaak naar theater en naar dans gerefereerd wordt. Bij een andere podiumkunst leentjebuur spelen, is dat een garantie op vernieuwing? Graag advies, maar dan door discussie en met een bereidheid om eerst de taal van het circus echt te leren begrijpen.
Jan Daems (hoofd Codarts Circus Arts Rotterdam)
>> Na drie jaar groeien en worstelen in ACaPA zit ik nu samen met Andreas de Ryck in het eerste jaar van DOCH, Stockholm. Een aantal zaken hier zorgen ervoor dat ik als circusmaker kan evolueren, bijvoorbeeld de tweewekelijkse redovisning (vergelijkbaar met een Personal Project, maar minder officieel, zonder licht en geluid). Het is een research in onze eigen discipline rond een bepaald thema. Ook krijgen we elk jaar een onderzoeksopdracht waar je over een langere periode aan werkt. Maar wat mij nog het meest helpt, zijn de gesprekken op dinsdag met Ivar Heckscher, een gepensioneerde Steinerschool-leerkracht met een fetisj voor jongleurs. Het vak heet ‘circus in society’, maar wij noemen het ons ‘coma-uur’. Anderhalf uur filosoferen en vragen stellen. We kunnen gedachten en problemen delen en er samen een oplossing voor zoeken. Je krijgt hier echt het gevoel dat het belangrijk is wat je denkt. Als je de dingen waar je zeker van bent in vraag stelt, kan je alleen maar groeien. Deze lessen helpen in het vinden naar je eigen identiteit als artiest en circusmaker. Het is een aanrader voor elke circusschool.

>> Mijn eerste reactie op het artikel van Julie Descamps is: ze heeft volkomen gelijk. Er studeren nauwelijks makers af aan de circushogescholen in de Benelux. Er is een gebrek aan visie, gebrek aan vernieuwingsdrang, gebrek aan circusdramaturgische kennis. Maar is dat eigenlijk wel zo erg?
Jezelf als maker ontwikkelen kost veel tijd. Is het realistisch om te verwachten dat studenten die als tieners beginnen aan een circusopleiding bij hun afstuderen niet alleen excelleren in een circusdiscipline, dansen en acteren op semiprofessioneel niveau, zichzelf kunnen redden als zelfstandig ondernemer, het liefst nog een muziekinstrument bespelen, en daarnaast ook nog eens volwaardige kunstenaars zijn? Niemand verwacht van een afgestudeerde danser of acteur dat hij direct eigen werk creëert, niet voor niets zijn er aparte opleidingen voor choreografie, regie en dramaturgie. Waarom zouden circusartiesten moeten werken als zelfstandige kunstenaars?
Er heerst in het circusveld nog altijd een soort taboe op het uit handen geven van artistieke beslissingen. Regisseurs worden gewantrouwd of van hun kracht ontdaan als ‘extern oog’. Slechts een handjevol pas afgestudeerden heeft het in zich om naast alle technische bagage ook direct te creëren. Een veel groter gedeelte zou enorm geholpen zijn als ze konden werken met een circusregisseur met visie en kennis van zaken. Waar blijven de oud-circusartiesten, choreografen en theaterregisseurs die circus willen maken met een artistieke visie, of zijn ze er wel maar krijgen ze de kans niet?
