De workshop circuskritiek – georganiseerd door Circuscentrum in samenwerking met rekto:verso, Etcetera, Theater op de Markt en Les Halles – was een schot in de roos. Een heerlijk diverse groep van journalisten, theaterwetenschappers, muzikanten en circusartiesten kwam zeven dagen samen om circusvoorstellingen te bekijken, erover te schrijven en te discussiëren. De meeste recensies en essays vind je elders op onze website, hier alvast een voorsmaakje.

Alles evolueert. Zelfs een steen in een vergeten dal verandert van grootte of textuur onder weersomstandigheden. Voor circus is dat niet anders: de tijdsgeest verandert en daarmee ook de artiesten en hun publiek. Maar waar andere kunstvormen zoals theater en dans het volste vertrouwen lijken te hebben in hun hedendaagse variant, zien we het circus aarzelen. Artiesten zoeken naar hun eigen manier om aan hedendaags circus te doen, maar wie de juiste vorm gevonden heeft, twijfelt nog of hij wel mag breken met bepaalde circusconventies die jaren of zelfs eeuwen oud zijn. Wie vandaag voet zet op een circusfestival zoals Theater op de Markt in Neerpelt of Gevleugelde Stad in Ieper kan de twijfel proeven in de lucht. En dat is zowel voor bezoeker als performer onwaarschijnlijk zonde.
De gemiddelde toeschouwer is geen artiest. Een voorstelling heeft daarom iets nodig dat de artiest met zijn toeschouwer verbindt. Want hoewel ze heel wat met elkaar delen, spreken de kunstenaar en de liefhebber een andere taal. Circusartiesten spreken in beelden, in sprongen, in gelaatsuitdrukkingen, in techniek. Het publiek is de taal van alledag gewoon, het onomwonden gesprek, de lichaamstaal die doorgaans netjes aansluit op het gesproken woord. En misschien is deze vooringesteldheid nog sterker: het grote publiek is vertrouwd met de traditionele circusvoorstelling. En het hoeft niet gezegd dat wie met zulke verwachtingen naar een hedendaagse voorstelling trekt bedrogen zal uitkomen. De loutere circusliefhebber heeft nood aan iets extra’s om de eigentijdse performer op het podium of in de piste te kunnen verstaan.
Gokwerk is gekkenwerk
Naar dat ‘iets’ wordt tot nog toe vaak enkel geraden, en dus vullen te veel circusartiesten het volkomen verkeerd in. Zo grijpt de Franse compagnie Akoreacro in haar nieuwste voorstelling ‘Klaxon’ terug naar typetjes à la Charlie Chaplin en Laurel and Hardy. De acteertechniek die zulke typetjes kenmerkt, ontstond niet toevallig met de stomme film. Lichaamstaal en gezichtsuitdrukkingen werden er in de eerste plaats sterk uitvergroot opdat de kijker zou verstaan wat een personage vanbinnen voelde, zonder dat die daarvoor woorden nodig had. In een stomme film zijn die gevoelens banaal en is een banale vertolking op haar plaats, maar de uitmuntende techniek van de acrobaten (én muzikanten) in ‘Klaxon’ tart alle verbeelding, en uitvergrote figuurtjes zorgen hier net níet voor emotie. Het lijkt wel alsof de straffe stunts – die door de live muziek nog eens worden versterkt – eerder vragen om een serene vertolking en het nu allemaal wat veel wordt voor het publiek. De vlieger met Spaanse roots vliegt als een gek in het rond terwijl hij temperamentvol gebaart en aldoor ‘Gracias!’ roept. Het acteerniveau doet het technische niveau geen eer aan en die mis-match zorgt voor een rommeltje in de piste. Akoreacro is terecht trots op haar talentvolle muzikanten en buitengewoon atletische acrobaten, want ze zijn technisch zo sterk dat ‘Klaxon’ hoe dan ook volle tenten trekt.
Dat het wringt zien we ook aan de artiest. Diens vertolking doet gedwongen aan, alsof het personage er enkel is omdat de artiest dénkt dat het zo hoort, en niet omdat hij daar weloverwogen en volkomen zelfstandig voor gekozen heeft. Bijgevolg is er enkel nog sprake van een uitvoerder in een verkleedpakje. De Rus op de contrabas weet zich als niet-acrobaat maar moeilijk een houding te geven en brult tijdens het spelen dan maar wat Russische bevelen naar zijn compagniecollega’s, en de verlegen conciërge blijft een lenige spierbundel, daar kunnen de blauwe overall en het preutse hoedje niets aan verhelpen. Het personage doet afbreuk aan het kunstig potentieel van de artiest en we zien hoe een acteerprestatie zelfs het meest hoogstaande technische niveau naar beneden kan halen.
Iets gelijkaardigs overkomt ‘Mad in Finland’ van Galapiat Cirque. De Finse dames hebben er resoluut voor gekozen hun stunts in Finse stereotypen te gieten: ze doen aan ijsvissen op de rola rola, koorddansen in tangokledij. Maar de verhaalvorm en de techniek raken elkaar niet oprecht en het is pijnlijk zichtbaar hoe de Finse clichés er enkel zijn om de opvoering van de circustechnieken te legitimeren. Ofschoon iedere artiest zichtbaar geforceerd zijn of haar rol portretteert, lijken de gezelschappen er rotsvast van overtuigd dat het publiek die rollen wil zien en geven ze zich volledig over aan hun verkeerd ingeschatte publieksverwachting.
Zelfonderzoek
Het ‘iets’ dat gedwongenheid moet vermijden en een brug moet slaan tussen artiest en publiek, gaat daarom concreet over een harmonieuze versmelting van uitvoerder en personage. Over een soort van mentale rustpositie waarin de kunstenaar zich comfortabel voelt terwijl hij zich tegelijkertijd fysiek op het hoogtepunt van zijn kunnen bevindt. Zo’n toestand kan een artiest alleen bereiken in een zorgvuldig uitgekozen rol. Want wringt het acteren, dan krijgt de hele voorstelling een gênante sfeer, uitmuntende techniek of niet. De rol kan gerust volkomen autobiografisch zijn wanneer de circusartiest er bijvoorbeeld bewust voor kiest niets meer te willen brengen dan zijn techniek en de uitdagingen ervan.
Zo toont Compagnie XY in haar jongste voorstelling ‘Il n’est pas encore minuit’ hoe een grote groep jonge acrobaten in samenwerking en vertrouwen veel verder gaat dan ze alleen ooit zou kunnen. Voor die indruk zijn de stunts en de individuele eigenheid van haar leden voldoende, geen maskers vereist. Het juiste personage garandeert dus paradoxaal genoeg dat de artiest centraal staat, zelfs wanneer die met objecten werkt. Het maakt van een voorstelling méér dan een opvoering van technische hoogstandjes, want de uitvoerder behoudt de controle en is geen slaaf van zijn techniek. Vindt de artiest die controle, dan wordt zijn voorstelling een hedendaagse circusvoorstelling. Vanuit die overtuiging stelt ook danser, contorsionist en allround artiest Alexander Vantournhout: “Jongleren is objecten organiseren in de ruimte, geen [hedendaags] circus”. Toch is en blijft techniek een prioriteit in het circus, dat tonen onder meer de toelatingsvoorwaarden van heel wat circusscholen. Een vernieuwde onderwijsvorm waarin meer plaats is voor zelfonderzoek en theater zou een stap in de juiste richting kunnen betekenen. Want hoe dan ook moeten de jonge artiesten na hun technische opleiding verder, alleen of in een gezelschap. En willen ze geen sport maar hedendaags circus brengen, dan is techniek onvoldoende.
Dialoog
Voor een grote stap in de circusevolutie is dus de kunstenaar verantwoordelijk. Heeft hij de sleutel gevonden, dan kan hij het publiek mee binnenvragen. Maar het is hier dat twijfel binnensluipt. Artiesten lijken er niet op te vertrouwen dat als zij hun hart volgen, het publiek die keuze ook zal begrijpen. Dat wantrouwen verklaart de keuze voor verouderde typetjes zoals we die onder andere in ‘Klaxon’ treffen: het zijn figuren die hun populariteit bij het volk bewezen hebben, en daarom een veilige keuze in de ogen van de artiest. Maar de hedendaagse circusvoorstelling is eenvoudigweg hun plekje niet.
De twijfel bij artiesten om het roer om te gooien is geenszins onterecht: het gaat hier om circus als broodwinning. Geen succes is geen brood op de plank. Maar er ís een manier om de risico’s juist in te schatten en de angst te relativeren: dialoog, zowel tussen artiest en publiek als tussen artiesten onderling. Want zonder praten blijven we maar gissen en maken we de taalbarrière nog sterker dan voorheen. Nog in november van dit jaar toonde de workshop circuskritiek hoe hoog de nood aan praten over circus wel is. Gesprekken liepen uit, gespreksthema’s gingen van hot naar her. Meer nog, na vier dagen intensief praten over hedendaags circus bleek uit de gemengde groep van circusartiesten en circusliefhebbers een opvallende eensgezindheid, een soort begrip van wat hedendaags circus precies moet zijn, zonder dat iemand er exact de vinger op kon leggen. Die eendracht wierp ook erg individueel haar vruchten af: de artiesten in de groep deden inspiratie op voor nieuw werk en de liefhebbers ontwikkelden een soort van derde oog waarmee ze voortaan op een meer ruimdenkende manier circus in zich kunnen opnemen.
Uit de workshop bleek voornamelijk: we hebben lang genoeg in abstracte termen gepraat. Het is nu tijd voor gerichte gesprekken met concrete stappen tot gevolg. Gesprekken rond de inhoud van circusopleidingen moeten artiesten dichter bij zichzelf brengen, hen leren hoe ze een aartsmoeilijke technische oefening kunnen ondersteunen en zelfs versterken met het juiste verhaal. Gesprekken tussen artiesten onderling moeten aan de oppervlakte brengen waar het precies wringt in dat combineren van techniek en vertelling. Gesprekken tussen artiesten en publiek moeten de toeschouwer een blik in het hersenkluwen van de kunstenaar gunnen en moeten de artiest het vertrouwen geven dat een oprechte voorstelling haar toeschouwers zal raken. Vandaag ontbreekt het nog aan uitnodigende platformen voor zulke dialogen, maar met deze workshop circuskritiek toonden het Circuscentrum, de circusartiest en de circusliefhebber zich alvast bijzonder enthousiast en hoopvol.
Compagnie XY met ‘Il n’est pas encore minuit’

In ‘Il n’est pas encore minuit’ van het Franse gezelschap XY nemen 22 acrobatische lichamen het op tegen de zwaartekracht. Ze lijken te winnen, want ‘samen staan ze sterk’. Precies dat is wat XY in hun voorstellingen wil onderzoeken: wat zijn de acrobatische mogelijkheden van een grote groep? Na de vorige succesvolle producties ‘Laissez Portez’ en ‘Le Grand C’, is ‘Il n’est pas encore minuit’ de volgende stap, de overtreffende trap.
In de openingsscène wordt er gevochten. Twee aan twee. En later iedereen met iedereen. Een krachtmeting tussen de 22 strak getrainde lichamen. Ze zijn aan elkaar gewaagd. Stilaan ontstaan er tussen de gevechten bouwsels van mensen, alsof ze besluiten hun kracht voor iets anders in te zetten. Torens van twee, een derde wordt er bovenop gegooid. Salto’s van het ene dragersduo naar het andere. Duikvluchten over elkaar heen. Dit is nog maar een voorproefje van wat ons te wachten staat.
Een uur lang zijn we getuige van de collectieve kracht van deze acrobatische lijven. Hun dynamiek en precisie zijn spectaculair. Maar hun vertrouwen en overgave zijn dat nog meer. Ondanks het zenuwslopende stunt- en vliegwerk waar deze artiesten zich aan wagen, zien we een aangename lichtheid op scène. De groep ademt en beweegt als één geheel. Ze zijn elkaars oren en ogen, elkaars armen en benen.
Soms gaat het fout, een toren stort in, een vlieger landt niet precies op de juiste plek. Maar de groep er rond vangt deze misstappen op. Ze trekken elkaar recht, ondersteunen als het te zwaar wordt en plukken verdwaalde vliegers net op tijd van de grond. Deze ‘foutjes’ zijn bijna even mooi als de feilloos gelukte figuren. Want beiden verbeelden hetzelfde: Je kan meer als je samen bent. Je springt hoger als je wordt geduwd. Je kan meer risico nemen als anderen voor je uitkijken. De acrobaten spelen hier letterlijk mee, wanneer ze enkele bouwsels opzettelijk laten instorten. Je denkt te weten waar ze naartoe gaan, maar even snel glijden de lijven uit elkaar en staan ze weer op de grond. XY schildert het ene adembenemende tableau vivant na het andere. Soms knallend en ‘in your face’, dan weer ingetogen, poëtisch.
In een poging tot lichtheid wordt er tussendoor gedanst, meer bepaald lindyhop, en gelachen: gedurende een hele scène worden de acrobatische bewegingen uitgevoerd onder constant gegiechel en gegier. Deze ingreep komt ietwat gekunsteld over. Want dit schouwspel van lichamen in samenwerking heeft geen ondertitels nodig. In overgave is geen lichtheid. Of eerder: er is enkel lichtheid. De prachtige, onvoorstelbaar draaglijke lichtheid van het bestaan als je je overgeeft aan het samenzijn, als je je laat dragen door een groep.
Baro d’Evel met ‘Bestias’

Waar dient circus voor? Als circus al een doel heeft, is het misschien dat het een parallel universum schept waarin afwijkend gedrag de norm is. Er gelden andere wetten dan in de dagelijkse realiteit. Maar wie getuige is van deze aparte wereld, kan ook leren over zijn eigen wereld. Het Franse gezelschap Baro d’Evel speelt op deze gedachte in met zijn jongste voorstelling ‘Bestias’.
Wie de tent van Baro d’Evel wil binnengaan, moet daartoe een hele weg afleggen door gangen vol primitieve afbeeldingen. De overgang naar de andere werkelijkheid wordt hierdoor extra in de verf gezet. De setting van ‘Bestias’ is een ronde piste met twee ingangen die als goals op een voetbalveld tegenover elkaar staan. Een mechanisch pijporgel speelt een duistere bourdon. Het eerste personage doemt op uit de rook.
Het is een mystiek en surrealistisch beeld, het paard dat de scène oversteekt. Het wordt gevolgd door een ekster, een man, een vrouw en een kind. In deze wereld zijn ze elkaars gelijke. Net zoals circus, dans en theater elkaars gelijke zijn. Of klank en beeld. Nog meer mensen doen hun intrede. Als ze spreken, lijken hun woorden verdacht existentieel. Als ze dansen, lijkt het op een oeroud, warmbloedig ritueel uit een nog onontdekt continent. Soms is het niet duidelijk of de mens het dier temt, of het dier de mens. Het onlogische wordt logisch.
Vaagheid is de grootste troef in de bonte droomwereld van Baro d’Evel. Het sjamanisme in hun dans bekent geen kleur, maar spreekt een beeldtaal die boven haar Afrikaanse, Andalusische of God weet welke andere invloeden staat. Een man die absurde onderhandelingen voert met een ekster lijkt dan weer een archetypische versie van de Amerikaanse zakenman te zijn. En een kokette, mondaine vrouw die binnenstrompelt alsof ze net haar eerste absint binnen heeft, zou zo uit de bordelen van Parijs kunnen komen. Het knappe aan ‘Bestias’ is dat elke toeschouwer zijn eigen interpretatie kan geven aan de verscheidenheid van personages en handelingen. Er wordt je als kijker geen centrale gedachte opgelegd, waardoor je in feite zelf de eindregie van het verhaal hebt. Een verhaal dat begint in de piste en wordt voltooid in je hoofd.
Om dit te bereiken gieten de artiesten affectieve acrobatie, bedwelmende muziek en filmische beelden in een continuüm met een uitgebalanceerde spanningsboog. De filosofische overpeinzingen van de acteurs, die weliswaar soms blijven hangen op het niveau van gelukskoekjes, zijn met voldoende humor gebracht. De boodschap relativeert zichzelf voor ze hoogdravend kan worden. Het is dan ook niet moeilijk om de wetmatigheden van deze alternatieve wereld aan te nemen, en het leidt tot wonderlijk spektakel. Laat verwondering nu net zijn wat circus in déze wereld zo belangrijk maakt.
