Met de gestage groei van hedendaags circus is circus weer onderdeel van het dagelijks leven. Dat is de overtuiging van Tim Roberts en aan overtuigingen heeft hij geen gebrek. De circuskenner werkte als clown en jongleur bij Ringling Brothers, een Amerikaans circus. Maar dat is lang geleden. Meer van betekenis: Roberts is veertien jaar directeur van de circusopleiding in Londen en hij was voorzitter van FEDEC, de Europese Federatie voor Professionele Circusscholen. Zijn clownsschoenen trekt hij alleen nog aan als hij zijn studenten hun diploma geeft.
Zijn Britse circusschool – voorheen Circus Space, nu National Centre for Circus Arts – is gehuisvest in een voormalige elektriciteitscentrale in Londen. Het knettert er nog steeds, dat komt nu door de energie en het enthousiasme van jonge jongleurs en acrobaten. In de oude fabriekshallen hangen de studenten in de touwen, ze buitelen op een trampoline of duiken door een hoepel. Bij een wandeling door Roberts’ circusfabriek kom je als vanzelf langs die ene wand zonder doorgang. Er is een trapje en als je daar omhoog klautert, blokkeert een blinde muur de doortocht. Het gebouw is niet af, geldgebrek, een deur is er niet. Hoe symbolisch wil je het hebben? Eigentijds circus wil met sprongen vooruit, maar stuit vaak op muren.
Tim Roberts praat de blaren op zijn tong om contemporary circus te verdedigen. Bij Britse politici, bij het klassieke circus, zelfs bij artiesten die net zijn afgestudeerd. Hij heeft een uitgesproken mening en schroomt niet om kritiek te uiten op de aanstormende generatie circusmakers. Zo heeft hij grote moeite met hedendaagse circusartiesten die om nostalgische redenen ervoor kiezen met tent en caravan van stad naar stad te reizen.
Roberts: “Die jonge artiesten wonen in een woonwagen omdat ze een mythe nastreven. Ik word onpasselijk van al die verhalen over caravans, kampvuren en honden. Dat is bijzaak en weerhoudt het circus ervan zich verder te ontwikkelen. We hoeven onze kunstvorm niet te verantwoorden met een vrije manier van leven. Je ontwikkelt het hedendaags circus door de kwaliteit van de creaties. Die jonge artiesten trappen in een val. Ze spelen reizigers en dat brengt onze sector in gevaar. Ze verdedigen het reizen, maar ze zouden juist de kunst moeten verdedigen.”
Dwepen
Een mythisch beeld van circus? Dat vraagt om uitleg. Roberts aarzelt niet. Hij zit op zijn praatstoel. “In de negentiende eeuw stond het circus midden in de stad. Steden hadden circustheaters en circus was onderdeel van ieders leven. Veel meer dan dans en ballet. Maar circussen gingen reizen, dat leverde meer op. Gaandeweg zijn ze verdrongen naar de rand van de stad. Dat leidde tot marginaliteit en een grote verwijdering tussen stad en circus. De tenten en woonwagens stonden letterlijk en figuurlijk aan de rand van de maatschappij.”
Zo groeide volgens Tim Roberts het romantische, maar misplaatste beeld van reizende acrobaten waar ‘circusmaagden’ – het is zijn omschrijving – nog steeds mee dwepen. Verschrikkelijk vindt hij dat en hij is ondubbelzinnig. “Met hun vrije manier van leven creëerden deze circusartiesten hun eigen waarden. Zo werkt dat met vogelvrijen, ze plaatsen zich buiten de samenleving. Dat imago werkt nog steeds in ons nadeel. Met de ontwikkelingen in de laatste twintig jaar – het ontstaan van hedendaags circus – keert het circus weer terug naar de stad. Circus is gelukkig weer deel van de maatschappij en de voorstellingen weerspiegelen de hedendaagse samenleving.”
Zijn boodschap is helder: laat die mythe los. “Zeg nu zelf: is een reizend circus wel zo afwijkend van andere kunstvormen? Acteurs en dansers reizen toch ook? Ze zijn soms net zo lang van huis als circusartiesten en reizen van het ene naar het andere theater.”
Hachelijk
De medaille heeft ook een keerzijde. Even neemt Tim Roberts gas terug. “Misschien past een reizend circus bij de huidige tijd. Mogelijk omarmen mensen de levenswijze van de reizende artiesten. Dan zijn circusmensen juist belangrijk voor de samenleving omdat ze metaforen leven. Een reiziger staat voor vrijheid, voor avontuur. Dat is precies wat veel mensen missen. Een jongleur is een metafoor voor drukte en spanning in het dagelijkse leven, mensen jongleren de hele dag met hun taken en verantwoordelijkheden. Balanceren op het slappe koord is eveneens een metafoor en symboliseert de hachelijke uitdagingen in het leven. Circusartiesten zijn gepersonifieerde metaforen. Ik wil dat niet veroordelen, maar de mythe mag niet belangrijker zijn dan de kwaliteit van de acts. Als directeur van een professionele circusopleiding knok ik voortdurend voor het imago van circusartiesten. Ik vecht tegen de mythe en achter mijn rug blazen studenten die mythe nieuw leven in.”
Eigentijds circus, is dat een combinatie van theater, dans en circustechnieken? Leg het Tim Roberts voor en hij zal zuchten. Het is een gedateerde omschrijving die artiesten ooit gebruikten om zich los te weken van het klassieke circus, zegt hij, maar hij vindt de definitie te beperkt. “Circus hoeft niet te zijn zoals ik het zie. Ik wil dat artiesten circus maken zoals zij het zelf voor ogen hebben. En dan hoop ik dat over zo’n twintig jaar het hedendaags circus een plaats heeft in de samenleving. Dat als een kind vertelt dat hij bij het circus wil, zijn ouders hem niet meteen opsluiten in zijn kamer.”
De voorman van de circusopleiding in Londen trekt graag vergelijkingen met andere kunstuitingen. Het is zijn vaste overtuiging dat circus dezelfde waarde heeft als dans en theater. “Ik hoop dat de carrière van een circusartiest in de toekomst hetzelfde aanzien krijgt als dat van een muzikant, een danser of een acteur. Het hedendaags circus groeit en het moet op de politieke agenda. Maar er is nog een lange weg te gaan. Onze sector bestaat dertig jaar, de televisie is zeventig jaar oud. Over de hele wereld zijn veertien erkende circusopleidingen. Hoeveel theateropleidingen zijn er? Duizenden. Onze kunstvorm is jong, we moeten de verwachtingen temperen.”
Dramaturgie
In tegenstelling tot klassiek circus zit bij het eigentijds circus vaak een verhaallijn in de shows, een doordacht plan of een opvallende stemming. Roberts: “Bij het klassiek circus vind je geen dramaturgische lijnen. Maar bij hedendaags circus zag ik bijvoorbeeld ‘De Ballade van de oude Zeeman’, een klassiek gedicht, als basis voor een voorstelling. En ik genoot van Romeo en Julia in de piste. Achter elke artistieke creatie schuilt een origineel idee. Dat is kunst. Achter een schilderij kan een verhaal zitten, dan is het niet vreemd dat hedendaags circus ook een verhaal wil vertellen. Maar het hoeft niet. Een show van Cirque Plume is poëzie. Daar is sfeer essentieel, ook dat is een dramaturgische keuze.”
Een show moet raken, dat is genoeg. Roberts trekt een vergelijking met beeldende kunst. “Net als een sculptuur. Je hoeft een beeld niet te begrijpen, maar het grijpt je aan. Een beeldhouwer maakt aantoonbaar kunst. Daar is geen discussie over. In het hedendaags circus werken we in de piste met onze bewegende lichamen, dat zijn dan bewegende sculpturen. Vraag een artiest naar de achtergrond van zijn act en je krijgt een verhaal te horen. Geen enkele artiest doet zomaar iets. In zijn hoofd zit een verhaal en dat komt via het lichaam naar buiten. Elke voorstelling heeft een plan, een betekenis. De toeschouwer voelt dat. Iedereen die naar een sculptuur kijkt, hecht er betekenis aan. Dat staat los van wat de maker bedoelt. Hedendaags circus is niet anders. Elke act, elke show heeft een artistieke reden.”
Dat kan zijn, maar circus – ook eigentijds circus – ademt vermaak uit. Denk aan al die vrolijke zogenaamde zigeunerfamilies in de piste. Ingewikkelde thema’s als dood, verlies, oorlog of geweld zie je niet in de tent. Tim Roberts veert op. Dit is opnieuw een muur waar hij dwars doorheen wil. “Daar is die mythe weer. Hoezo zoeken mensen alleen vermaak? In de cinema ziet de bezoeker toch ook angstaanjagende en serieuze films. Literatuur kent ook allerlei uitingen. Die zware thema’s ontdek ik wel degelijk in de circusacts. Kijk maar naar wat mijn studenten doen. Maar misschien zijn circusartiesten nog niet volwassen genoeg om met loodzware thema’s te dealen. Onze sector is jong. Maar een circusartiest heeft het recht expressie te geven aan welk onderwerp dan ook. Dat geldt voor alle kunstenaars. Ik hoop dat hedendaags circus over twintig jaar het niveau heeft bereikt dat het alle mogelijke thema’s kan uitspitten.”
Lange mars
Dat zal niet vanzelf gaan. De lange mars om het imago van circus te verbeteren kent veel bedreigingen. Van buiten en van binnen. Het publiek erkent het eigentijds circus nog niet als een voldragen kunstvorm, beseft Tim Roberts. “Het publiek ziet acteurs en dansers als artiesten, maar circusmensen niet. In circus werken mensen, in het theater spelen acteurs. Dat is een wezenlijk verschil in woordkeuze. Nu ik erover nadenk: als je moet werken, is kunst verdwenen. In een circus doet iedereen vaak alles: de tent opbouwen, kaartjes verkopen en vrachtwagens besturen. Ik betwijfel of het zo verstandig is dat een circusartiest al dat werk verricht. Als je een bedrijf goed weet te runnen, dan heb je op elke post gekwalificeerde mensen zitten. De economische realiteit, de tegenwind, heeft de definitie van een circusartiest veranderd. Hij is meer werker dan artiest. De knop moet om: ‘We doen niet alles, we doen het samen met waardering voor ieders inbreng.’ Mijn definitie van een circusartiest is dezelfde als die van een danser of acteur. Hij beschikt over technische vaardigheden en over voldoende kwaliteiten om te kunnen performen. Door die vaardigheden kan hij zich uitdrukken. De technieken van een circusartiest zijn anders dan die van een dansers of acteur, maar haal de trapeze of de knotsen weg en deze artiesten weten nog steeds hoe ze moeten dansen en hoe ze moeten acteren. In het hedendaags circus moet de artiest weer de artiest zijn. Daarnaast heb je de kostuummakers, de technici en het management. Onze sector moet opnieuw worden opgebouwd, met professionals op de juiste plaats. Hedendaags circus moet professioneel worden geleid, net als een theater- of dansgezelschap.”
Dan is eigentijds circus eigenlijk best ouderwets, want veel gezelschappen werken als reizende, klassieke circussen. Tim Roberts: “Dat is mijn zorg. Je kent de theorie dat als je de ruimte in gaat, in een rechte lijn, dat je dan uiteindelijk terugkomt op aarde? Ik ben bang dat hedendaags circus die weg al heeft afgelegd. Ik hou niet van die discussies als: ik doe circus want ik speel in de modder, of ik breng echt circus, want ik komt uit een circusfamilie, of jij bent geen circus, want je komt van een circusopleiding. Ik vocht jaren voor jonge mensen die nu juist dezelfde beweringen doen. Dat vind ik jammer. In dertig jaar zijn we onvoldoende vooruitgegaan. De ontwikkeling moet sneller.”
