Van tijd tot tijd vraag ik me af hoe het einde van een circuscarrière eruit ziet. Ik stel me een sollicitatiegesprek voor in een kale, ongezellige kamer. De ondervrager neemt op een bepaald moment het cv van de kandidaat erbij en vraagt geamuseerd, verwonderd en een tikje spottend: “En euh… hiervóór was u… circusartiest?”
Het leven en de carrière van een circusartiest vertonen grote gelijkenissen met die van een topsporter. Het vergt veel energie en tijd om het toppunt van je kunnen te bereiken, en daar dan hopelijk 15-20 jaar te blijven, waarna onherroepelijk de fysieke aftakeling begint. Eens het applaus is weggestorven en het ego verzadigd, wanneer de zin om te toeren ophoudt, het lichaam niet meer mee wil of het podium zijn glans heeft verloren… Wat dan?
Je kan als lesgever, regisseur of artistiek directeur in de bekende warme circuswereld blijven rondwaren of je kan andere oorden opzoeken, de koude wijde wereld in. Een stap in het ongewisse, maar voor wie ooit voor circus koos, is dat bekend terrein. Gelukkig levert het creëren, spelen en toeren van een circusvoorstelling een hoop praktische en nuttige ervaringen op. Het cv van een ervaren circusartiest leest dan ook als een natte droom voor elke werkgever:
M/V met internationale ervaring, spreekt vijf talen vloeiend, teamspeler en autodidact, zelfdisciplinair met een uitgebreid interessegebied. Telt de overuren niet, is flexibel en beschikt over een groot improvisatievermogen. Bezit de mensenkennis van een HR-manager en de leiderscapaciteit van een CEO. Combineert jeugdig enthousiasme met een flinke dosis levenservaring. Is creatief, handig en nieuwsgierig en kan op de koop toe een personeelsfeestje opleuken. Strekken verder tot aanbeveling: kennis van lassen, snit en naad, automechaniek, networking, boekhouding, tekstverwerking en eenwieleren.
Ik stel me weer hetzelfde sollicitatiegesprek voor, waar de ondervrager na een korte stilte zonder een woord opstaat, de lift neemt naar de bovenste verdieping, aanklopt bij het grootste bureau en zegt: “Mijnheer de directeur, u kunt vertrekken, we hebben iemand beters gevonden.”
Het is een kwestie van tijd voor horden headhunters de circusfestivals platlopen om artiesten bij hun gezelschap weg te kapen.
