De jaarlijkse stage voor jonge talenten die Circuscentrum en ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque, Brussel) samen organiseren is bedoeld om jongeren van 16 tot 18 jaar met professionele ambities beter voor te bereiden op de harde strijd om een plaatsje in de professionele circushogescholen. Er zijn immers maar een handvol circushogescholen in Europa en onze Vlaamse kandidaten – die meestal uit de vrijetijdsateliers komen – moeten er opboksen tegen talent uit heel Europa. De laatste jaren lijkt dat nog goed te lukken ook. Hoe komt dat?
Het niveau en de leskwaliteit in onze lokale circusateliers is globaal gestegen, dat is allicht het belangrijkste feit. Maar ateliers kunnen zich niet enkel toespitsen op een kleine groep van écht gedreven talenten, zij hebben ook andere doelstellingen waar te maken. En dan blijkt deze gezamenlijke talentenstage een belangrijke schakel. Ook in de cijfers. Van de nieuwe generatie Vlaamse hogeschoolstudenten is zowat 80% langs onze ESAC-stage gepasseerd. En elk jaar geraken er opnieuw zo’n 3 à 4 jongeren ‘klaar’ voor deze grote stap naar een professionele circusopleiding.
Nochtans waren de eerste edities niet altijd makkelijk. Professionele trainers van ESAC – soms uit landen als Rusland of China – waren niet gewoon om met 16-jarige Vlaamse jongeren om te gaan. Omgekeerd waren circusateliers soms ook ongerust om hun leerlingen aan deze ‘schoolse’ wereld over te leveren. Maar stilaan groeiden beide werelden naar mekaar toe. Binnen het docentencorps van ESAC zijn er trainers die telkens opnieuw meedoen en zich steeds beter in hun sas voelen bij de jongeren. Ook de omschakeling van weekends naar een hele werkweek maakt het engagement en de band tussen docenten en deelnemers groter.
Toenmalige ‘slungels van 16 jaar’ als Alexander Vantournhout, Florian Brooks of Jesse Huygh ontpopten zich ondertussen tot sterke circusartiesten met internationale renommee. Met dergelijke resultaten wist het stageteam de aanvankelijke scepsis te overtreffen en lijkt de stage haar plek in het vormingparcours verworven te hebben.
Inévitable
Dit jaar zal ook het brede publiek eens met de jonge talenten kunnen kennismaken. Er wordt met de huidige groep immers een volwaardige productie gemaakt die op verschillende podia te zien zal zijn. De voorstelling ‘Inévitable’ werd gemaakt door jongeren van vijf verschillende circusateliers, onder begeleiding van Sylvia Ubieta en Hanna Mampuys, en in productie van Circuscentrum.
Enkele reacties van de jongeren zelf: “We werken op een heel andere manier dan de meesten van ons gewoon zijn, en juist daardoor leer je heel veel. Bij het creatieproces zijn we vaak terug begonnen vanuit het standpunt wat gebeurt er als. Als ik iemand duw, dan… Het is dus een show over wat ‘onoverkomelijk’ is en moest gebeuren. Vandaar de titel ‘Inévitable’. (Marth en Marie, ateliers Salto Tienen en Cirkus in Beweging).
“Een zeer leuk initiatief, vooral omdat we geregisseerd worden door Sylvia Ubieta (ESAC) Hanna Mampuys. We hebben ook meteen optreedkansen gekregen waardoor je een echt doel hebt om naartoe te werken. De grootste uitdaging is wel dat we weinig repetities hebben en dat het niet makkelijk was om op zo een korte tijd een volwaardige show in elkaar te steken. We hebben alles zelf gemaakt maar door de bijsturing van onze regisseurs is het op iets degelijks uitgedraaid.” (Hendrik van Cirkus in Beweging).
