Daar is de lente, daar is de zon! De zomer rukt al op, maar eerst moeten nog een aantal verplichte nummers afgewerkt worden: eerste communies, plechtige communies, lentefeesten, schoolfeesten, familiefeesten én de eindejaarsvoorstellingen van de artistieke circusopleidingen. Hele hordes nieuw aanstormend talent zitten te springen om de circuswereld te veroveren. Elke eindejaarsvoorstelling is een feest van vernieuwing, creativiteit en glad gepolijste techniek.
Helaas. Driewerf helaas. Een paar uitzonderingen niet te na gesproken worden, bestaan die voorstellingen vaak uit een opeenvolging van hermetisch afgesloten, technisch verzorgde maar levenloze nummers, oefeningen in artistieke zelfbevlekking die één ongelooflijk belangrijk aspect van het circus vergeten: het publiek.
Pas op, de beschuldigende vinger wijst niet in de richting van de studenten of van de leerkrachten. Deze ‘J’accuse!’ is gericht aan de structuur en de filosofie van de opleidingen zelf. Opleidingen die de neiging lijken te hebben om hun studenten vooral zo ver mogelijk weg te houden van de toeschouwers. Circus komt blijkbaar het best tot z’n recht wanneer het jarenlang wordt opgesloten in een oefenzaal. Resultaat: studenten met een chronisch gebrek aan speelmogelijkheden en podiumervaring.
Elke circusartiest, in opleiding of niet, heeft een publiek nodig. Om zijn eigen artistieke identiteit te ontdekken, maar vooral om mensen te laten lachen, huilen, voelen.
Want precies daarvoor komen ze naar het circus.
