“In de muziek bestaan ook veel racisten.” Zanger-filosoof Raymond van het Groenewoud had gelijk. Hij had het trouwens net zo goed over het circus kunnen hebben. Ik kan het weten, ik ben zelf ooit circusracist geweest.
Ik heb de opsplitsing tussen modern en klassiek circus met luider stemme verdedigd, alsof ik ze zelf had uitgevonden. Ik dweepte met het één en keek neer op het ander. Klassiek circus was een fossiel uit een ver verleden, een bedreigde diersoort, een al opgegeven familielid dat halsstarrig weigert te sterven. Nieuw circus was de toekomst!
Ik was een circusracist, maar ben het nu niet meer. Met de jaren komt de wijsheid, en met elke circusvoorstelling wat meer inzicht. Na een paar abominabele moderne en een paar uitstekende traditionele acts rees het donkerbruin vermoeden dat een hoop circusvernieuwers het kind met het badwater hadden weggegooid.
Op de koop toe is het hedendaags circus stilaan zelf aan vernieuwing toe. Het liedje ‘Deze circusvoorstelling is een mengeling van circus, dans, theater en muziek!’ begint behoorlijk afgezaagd te klinken. De oude opdeling lijkt nog meer dan vroeger irrelevant en artificieel.
Het woord ‘allochtoon’ is al uit onze woordenschat geschrapt, wat mij betreft mogen de termen ‘traditioneel’, ‘nomadisch’, ‘hedendaags’ of ‘modern’ ook uit het circusvocabularium verdwijnen.
Een glitternummer op foute beats? Circus!
Een contorsionisme-act op wat minimalistisch gebliep? Circus!
Twee halvegare clowns in een te klein autootje? Circus! Circus! Circus!
