Het 37ste Circusfestival van Monte Carlo maakte zich opnieuw waar als oudste en meest prestigieuze wereldcircusfestival. Net zoals hun vader Rainier creëren Prinses Stéphanie en Prins Albert een grote open ruimte voor ruim zestigduizend bezoekers, honderdvijftig artiesten uit 20 landen, en professionelen uit alle werelddelen. De directeur van het grootste Spaanse circus José Gonzales verwoordt het krachtig: “Dit festival geeft ons zelfrespect en waardering voor onze eigen, toch aparte cultuur.”
Paardenfluisteraar Jean-Francois Pignon werkte nog nooit in een circus. Toch had hij de uitnodiging aanvaard van de selectiecommissie. Net als zijn broer Frederic is Jean-François erg bekend bij paardenliefhebbers. Frederic is bij het grote publiek bekend geworden sinds zijn opmerkelijke tournee met Cavalia. Hiermee trad hij in 2007-2008 ook bij ons op. Pignon en zijn paarden werken voor het eerst in de – voor zijn normen – kleinere circuspiste. Heel interactief én organisch begint hij met een ‘volwassen’ kudde en brengt dan een heel jonge groep merries, die tussen de zes en negen maanden oud zijn, mee in de piste. Het jongste dier volgde Pignon zelfs nog niet bij de repetities en bleef heel dicht bij de moeder. Pignon: “Zo leren ze heel snel hoe ons werk in de piste verloopt en kan ik unieke talenten ontwikkelen.”
Als ‘outsider’ kreeg Pignon snel veel waardering bij de aanwezige dierenartsen en dompteurs.
Pignon: “Als dierenleraars moeten we ons elke dag rechtvaardigen voor wat we doen. Ik word daar moe van. De basis van ons werk is respect en vertrouwen geven in een liefdevolle band met onze dieren die onze partners zijn. Vaak worden we respectloos aangevallen door mensen die ons werk niet eens kennen. Ik zoek in mijn leven steeds naar dialoog. Ik geloof niet dat door haat te zaaien de wereld er beter van wordt. Ik zie hetzelfde respect voor dieren bij de familie Bauer die hier werken met hun leeuwen en tijger. De wereld zou er mooier uitzien mocht er meer respect tussen mensen en groepen komen.”
In de marge van dit festival zijn er ook heel wat professionele seminaries. Uiteraard was de themadag rond dieren in het circus erg goed bezet. Ook daar kwam Pignon getuigen. “Wetenschappelijk is er niets gevonden dat er op wijst dat werken met dieren niet goed zou zijn voor deze dieren. Toch nemen politici vaak besluiten die alleen rusten op ‘populistische’ stellingen en puur een symboolwaarde hebben die ons raakt in onze – menselijke – existentie.”
Toen Pignon in Monaco toekwam, waren de leeuwen van Kid Bauer reeds in hun zeer ruime speel- en leefkooien. Pignon moest dus met zijn paardenkudde voorbij de leeuwen. Kid Bauer vroeg aan Pignon of hij niet beter eerst alle kooien dicht deed zodat de paarden de roofdieren niet direct zo nabij zagen. Pignon wou dit niet. Pignon: “Het was een oefening in vertrouwen opbouwen. Ik nam langzaam de tijd. Ik stopte de kudde en praatte, samen kijkend naar de leeuwen, met de paarden. Het was een heel wezenlijk contacting moment. Als de eerste kennismaking goed loopt, dan kan er nadien heel veel. Vertrouwen bouw je samen op. Het is een vorm van elkaar respecteren en dat is de essentie van elke dressuur. Met liefde en empathie samen optrekken. En ik zie hier dezelfde passie én dezelfde waarden bij de familie Bauer met hun roofdieren.”
Paardenfluisteraar Jean-François Pignon voelde zich zeer snel thuis in deze circuswereld. Een stralende Pignon: “Ik ben geschrokken hoeveel ‘métier’ in circus verweven zit. Het is vaak heel precies en ingenieus werken. Met mijn paarden werk ik heel improviserend en breng ik bijna nooit hetzelfde in dezelfde volgorde. Maar hier speelt timing en afstemming een zeer grote rol. Ik ben hier uit mijn comfortzone gestapt en merk nu pas hoe snel mijn paarden en ikzelf ons kunnen aanpassen. Mijn waardering groeit hier bijna elke minuut. Uiteindelijk is het circus, twee eeuwen terug, geboren als paardenspel. Ik ben als paardenman blij met deze wereld opnieuw verbinding te kunnen maken.”
