Met 23 ateliers en meer dan 4000 deelnemers kan je gerust stellen dat de circusateliers in Vlaanderen een enorm en steeds groeiend succes kennen. Maar binnen deze dynamiek dringt zich ook een moment van bezinning op. Waar liggen de kansen en uitdagingen voor deze ateliers? Cultuurjournalist Liv Laveyne stak in de wandelgangen van het Vlaamse circus haar licht op en formuleert hieruit vijf aanbevelingen voor het atelier van de toekomst.
Organiseer je atelier
Een boutade om mee te beginnen: “Eigenlijk werken de meeste circusateliers zoals een traditioneel circus dat doet. De circusdirecteur is vaak ook degene die de ticketjes scheurt, de piste veegt en eventueel nog tijdens de pauze de popcorn verkoopt.” De meeste circusateliers, zowel de oudere als recent opgerichte, zijn ontstaan vanuit de passie van één of enkele individuen die er met volle kracht en enthousiasme tegen aan gaan. Dat kan je wel enkele jaren volhouden maar wat daarna? Hoe een sterk team vormen en hoe ervoor zorgen dat dit team zich identificeert met de organisatie, dat is de uitdaging.
Het is daartoe belangrijk dat de ateliers zich professioneler gaan organiseren. Dat er een duidelijker taakomschrijving komt en dat de functies ingevuld worden door de juiste personen met de gepaste competentie. Dit betekent dat in sommige gevallen mensen van plaats wisselen, een andere functie invullen of zich bijscholen. Grotere ateliers zouden baat hebben bij de aanwerving van een goede communicatieverantwoordelijke en een zakelijk leider die verder kijkt dan de neus – subsidies en lidgelden – lang is.
Die professionalisering geldt ook voor de lesgevers. Het Circuscentrum heeft in samenwerking met partners in het veld een pedagogisch opleidingstraject uitgewerkt. Vanaf 15 jaar kan de cursus circus/jeugdanimator gevolgd worden om als lesgever-assistent aan de slag te kunnen. Vanaf 18 jaar is er de ‘Basisopleiding Circusbegeleider’ (BIC). Aansluitend zijn er tal van pedagogische bijscholingen voor circuslesgevers zoals bijvoorbeeld de jaarlijkse driedaagse Kerststage.
Naast deze initiatieven zijn er nog interessante ontwikkelingen. Zo is er de infiltratie van circuspedagogie binnen lerarenopleidingen (KHKempen Turnhout, postgraduaat CREAtainment KHLimburg). En wie er echt voor wil gaan kan de voltijdse jaaropleiding ‘Formation Pedagogique’ in Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles volgen. Er zijn dus kansen genoeg om pedagogische expertise in huis te hebben of te halen. Een docent hoeft niet als de beste circustechnieken te beheersen (net als een muziekleraar geen concertpianist moet zijn), essentiëler is een goede onderwijsmethodiek en het talent om te enthousiasmeren en stimuleren.
De humus voor gedreven docenten is steeds meer aanwezig, maar hoe floreert die op het veld? Wat betekent dit naar praktische doorstroming in de ateliers? ‘Circusdocent’ blijkt een knelpuntberoep. Net als de ganse kunst- en cultuursector hebben ook de circusateliers te kampen met de toenemende ver-freelancing. De ateliers in de kleinere steden en gemeenten hebben het moeilijk om grotere takenpakketten aan te bieden aan hun docenten, die er in het beste geval enkele uurtjes in de week les kunnen geven. Maar ook voor veel ateliers in de grotere steden is het elk jaar weer een zoektocht om de uren ingevuld te krijgen. Veel docenten zijn immers verkocht/verknocht aan hun eigen atelier en bovendien is er het praktische gegeven alle docenten op dezelfde dagen ‘bezet’ zijn (de traditionele woensdagnamiddag en zaterdag). Het is belangrijk om uitwisselingen tussen de ateliers op touw te zetten zodat je een bredere werking krijgt. Dit kan ook het kwaliteitsverschil tussen de ateliers tegen gaan. Bundel die krachten en dus in concreto de uren.
Synergie is geen modewoord
Boutade twee: “Er moet niet op gerekend worden dat het circusdecreet extra geld zal vrijmaken voor vrijetijdsbesteding.” Slimme samenwerkingsverbanden en schaalvergroting kunnen je organisatie wel naar andere subsidiekanalen op lokaal, regionaal of Vlaams niveau leiden. Zo konden fusies of ‘satellietwerkingen’ van ateliers al tot de belangrijke provinciale ondersteuning leiden (bv. Woesh in West-Vlaanderen of Circusplaneet in Oost-Vlaanderen).
Synergie is niet alleen financieel lonend, maar ook kwalitatief verrijkend. Nu zijn veel circusateliers vooral op eigen houtje bezig, is er soms weinig constructieve concurrentie, bijvoorbeeld op vlak van het geven van workshops op aanvraag (wat extra geld in het laatje brengt). Moet en kan je ateliers op dit vlak verplichten om enkel op eigen terrein, in eigen regio te blijven? Waarom geen grote pool te samen installeren waaruit kennis en kunde kan worden geput?
Maar alvorens over synergieën te spreken… een relatie bouw je maar op door elkaar te leren kennen. De Vlaamse circusateliers engageren zich in allerhande uitwisselingen met het buitenland: ze organiseren groepsuitwisselingen of festivals met verschillende jeugdcircussen, ze wisselen vrijwilligers uit (EVS), etc. Dit gebeurt in zekere mate ook op Vlaams niveau. Binnen het Circuscentrumnetwerk ontmoeten ateliers mekaar op het atelieroverleg, ze organiseren er samen activiteiten als de Eenwielerconventie, vormingsactiviteiten… . Maar buiten deze ‘koepelactiviteiten’ die door het Circuscentrum worden aangedreven, zijn er nog weinig structurele bilaterale samenwerkingsprojecten tussen Vlaamse ateliers onderling.
Momenteel is er binnen de Vlaamse circusateliers een overaanbod aan productiegroepen, die – in vergelijking met vroeger – nog maar zelden buiten de muren van het eigen atelier geraken. Waarom geen productiegroepen oprichten met jongeren van de diverse ateliers? De ateliers kunnen om beurt per productie gastheer zijn voor repetitieruimte. Zo laten de ateliers letterlijk aan elkaar zien wat ze in huis hebben en kunnen ze – indien dit resulteert in een kwalitatief resultaat – de productie meteen ook als professioneel jongerenproject aanbieden binnen festivals en cultuurcentra.
Samenwerking betekent niet dat alles eenheidsworst wordt. Synergie staat distinctie niet in de weg. Je hoeft niet telkens opnieuw het warm water uit te vinden, maar het kan interessant zijn om jezelf op een specifieke manier te profileren in het landschap. Zoals bijvoorbeeld Ell Circo d’ell Fuego erin geslaagd is zich een uniek eigen profiel zich aan te meten: dat van de spectaculaire technieken en een neus voor talent en talentontwikkeling.
Naast de samenwerking tussen de circusateliers dient ook de samenwerking met andere culturele en sociale organisaties te worden onderzocht en moet meer de vinger aan de pols gehouden worden bij het kunsteducatieve veld. Het is interessant om de kennis die daar reeds aanwezig is, te benutten.
Circus heeft een lokale inbedding en een sociale dimensie
Mensen zijn sedentair. Dat beseffen ook de ateliers in grote steden (als Brussel). Zelfs de meer gegoede klasse en al zeker kansarmen steken maar moeilijk de grenzen van hun eigen wijk over. Daarom is het noodzakelijk om naast een basiswerking in het centrum als atelier je antennes uit te steken en de verschillende wijken in te trekken. Benut de nomadische kracht van het circus (van weleer) en trek (nog meer) de verschillende wijken in, infiltreer in scholen en buurtcentra (bv. circusatelier Zonder Handen in Brussel of Circusplaneet in Gent met specifieke wijkprojecten).
Circus wint weliswaar aan populariteit maar veel mensen zijn er ook nog niet mee vertrouwd of hebben een verkeerde perceptie van circus, zeker een kansarm publiek dat dan al gemakkelijker (onbekend is onbemind) kiest voor koning voetbal. Inzetten op sociaal circus is belangrijk en dient te gebeuren op structurelere basis. Zo werken veel scholen enkel projectmatig samen met circusateliers (dus eenmaal minder centen, valt ook het circus weg).
Durf er van uit te gaan en toon aan dat circus iets kan toevoegen aan de stad, de wijk. Circus is een sociaal gegeven en heeft een belangrijke plek verworven binnen de naschoolse activiteiten. Ook de steden zien dat in. Voor wat, komt wat: logistiek hebben de circusateliers nood aan sportinfrastructuur (sporthallen, scholen), daarvoor is een goede verstandhouding met de lokale overheid cruciaal. Dit kan dan weer door als circusatelier de sociale troef uit te spelen.
Leer naast de kunstjes ook de kunst
Binnen het professionele veld verovert het circus steeds meer zijn plaats binnen de kunsten. Sommige ateliers hebben de link naar circus als kunstvorm nog niet gevonden en zien in de praktijk circus nog altijd eerder als sport (techniek) dan als kunstvorm. De circusateliers dienen de inhaalbeweging die binnen het professionele circus aan de gang is, ook te maken. Minstens even belangrijk als het aanleren van de kunstjes is tonen hoe je die kunstjes kan aanwenden binnen een artistiek gegeven en de link maken met wat tegenwoordig op de podia te zien is.
Dit kan door professionele circusartiesten als (gast)docent binnen te brengen maar ook artiesten uit andere kunstvormen (dans, theater, muziek, performance) aan te trekken. Zo werkte het Circuscentrum onlangs samen met het Gentse theaterhuis Kopergietery voor het ‘Coach de Coach’- weekend: een bijscholing voor begeleiders van productiegroepen in circusateliers (zie p. 9 en 10).
Daarnaast dienen ook samenwerkingen met lokale kunstpartners te worden onderzocht. We laten maar een ballonnetje op: wat zou een (productionele) samenwerking tussen Cirkus in Beweging en fABULEUS in Leuven kunnen opleveren, tussen Circusplaneet en Kopergietery in Gent, tussen Kayfou of Ell Circo d’ell Fuego en Rataplan, …? Besef dat circus thuis hoort binnen de kunsten. Neem jezelf als atelier daarin ook serieus (en verhuur geen springkastelen als bijverdienste, nu het circus eindelijk dat imago van straatanimatie van zich heeft afgegooid).
Vrije tijd of talentontwikkeling: werk met verschillende snelheden
Boutade drie: “Iedereen moet kunnen deelnemen aan alles.” Het is de heersende ingesteldheid van de circusateliers. Een inclusiegedachte die alleen maar toe te juichen valt, maar vraagt om nuance. Voor vele deelnemers van de ateliers is circus inderdaad ‘gewoon een hobby’, maar er zijn een aantal die meer willen, die de goesting hebben om verder te gaan, er misschien zelfs ooit hun beroep van te maken. Hoe ga je om met die verschillende verwachtingen? Ter vergelijking: veel jeugdvoetbalclubs hebben een A en een B-ploeg. Dat suggereert een waardeonderscheid, maar het is vooral een onderscheid in ambities. Die nood voel je ook bij de deelnemers aan de ateliers.
De uitbouw van de A-werking hangt ook nauw samen met de samenstelling/samenwerking van de productiegroepen waar je sowieso al een groter engagement mag vragen en verwachten van de deelnemers. Er is ook niets mis met aparte ‘talentengroepen’ waar er bijkomend en aan sneller tempo getraind kan worden en waar ook ingezet wordt op de artiest als scheppende kunstenaar. Voor de circusateliers is er een belangrijke taak binnen het Vlaamse circuslandschap weggelegd aangaande talentdetectie en -ontwikkeling. Dit hoeft een inclusieve cultuur niet tegen te spreken.
