Zweden: land van smörgåsbord, elanden, ABBA, Nils Holgersson. En sinds we ‘Undermän’ van Cirkus Cirkör zagen nu ook het land van herkomst van een bijzonder circusconcert. Drie stoere bebaarde bonken in houthakkershemden gooien kettle bells, kegels en elkaar in de lucht, musiceren en ventileren onder het maken van een rubiks kubus ook nog eens hun liefdesverdriet met Scandinavische onderkoelde humor.
It takes two to tango, wordt wel eens gezegd. Dat geldt evenzeer en misschien nog wel meer voor partneracrobatie. Porteur en voltigeuse vertrouwen elkaar blindelings, hun fysieke en mentale kracht wordt één. Het is dan ook geen wonder dat veel porteurs en voltigeuses niet alleen in de piste maar ook daarbuiten een relatie hebben. Maar wat als die relatie spaak loopt? Acrobaten Peter Åberg, Matthias Andersson en Matias Salmenaho waren alle drie zogenaamde ‘ondermannen’, kloeke dragers van vederlichte dames, die hun collega’s én ook hun geliefdes waren. Met de breuk stonden ze niet alleen relationeel op straat, maar ook professioneel. Want wat is een porteur zonder voltigeur? Het is als spek zonder eieren. Zweden zonder smörgåsbord. “I felt like I had lost half of myself,” zo omschreef Andersson het gevoel na de breuk met zijn partner. Regisseur Olle Strandberg vertrok vanuit dat gegeven voor ‘Undermän’. Gaat in circusspektakels doorgaans de meeste aandacht naar de voltigeuses en hun spectaculaire luchtbuitelingen, dan staan hier de porteurs in de spotlight.
Salmenaho draagt zijn kompanen als twee koffers het podium op. Ze lopen er wat verweesd rond. Slepen gerief af en aan. Niet goed wetende waarheen. Zo trof regisseur Strandberg deze drie individuen ook aan. Op de dool. Na alles – liefde en carrière – verloren te hebben. In hun gedeelde leed hebben ze elkaar gevonden. Samen hebben ze hun spullen gepakt, zijn ze terug on the road.
Ondanks de persoonlijke tragiek is ‘Undermän’ geen loodzware voorstelling. Met veel humor en een poëtische ondraaglijke lichtheid van het bestaan vertellen ze hun verhaal. Soms woordelijk door naar voor te treden en het publiek rechtstreeks aan te spreken. Andersson over zijn vergane carrière in Las Vegas. Åberg die praat over zijn relatie terwijl hij enkele plastic rietjes op zijn kin laat balanceren onderwijl een rubiks kubus aan het oplossen. Salmenaho, jonglerend terwijl een radio-interview met hem te horen is. Maar meer dan woorden misschien kunnen doen, spreken de beelden. Je ziet deze Undermän de lift uit ‘Dirty Dancing’ parodiëren. Er is de ontroerende ‘pas de deux’ waarbij Andersson het succesnummer waarmee hij samen met zijn voormalige partner optrad, opnieuw overdoet: je ziet hem ‘niets’ in het ijle gooien, opvangen, ermee dansen. Er is het duet met de roue cyr waarbij een veertje door de krachtige beweging van het ijzeren rad omhoog in de lucht gehouden wordt. Een recensent omschreef het geheel terecht als ‘poetry in motion’. Maar het is ook music emotion.
De livemuziek geeft een emotionele laag. De drie acrobaten zijn immers niet alleen begenadigde circusartiesten, maar ook straffe muzikanten daarbij gerugsteund door muzikant met heldere engelenstem, Andreas Tengblad. Ook hier is het balanceren tussen humor en ernst. Een work-out choreografie met kettle bells (gietijzeren gewichten lijkend op een kanonbal met een handvat) eindigt met een harde valse noot, wanneer een van deze zwaargewichten de ukelele, die zonet nog gevoelig betokkeld werd, verplettert. Als ‘pauze’ laten de Undermän de toeschouwers van plaatsen wisselen, een stoelendans, terwijl ze een low-fi versie brengen van ‘Dancing on my own’ van de Zweedse popzangeres Robyn. Scandinaviërs en hun onderkoelde humor. Deze Undermän hebben iets weg van een boysbandje maar dan wel rijker aan ervaring, armer aan illusies, geschaafd als ze zijn door het leven.
‘Undermän’ is atypisch in zijn verloop. Het is geen krachtig straight on circusconcert, maar een performance die meandert tussen circustruc en persoonlijke biecht. Tussen de nummers door zitten veel verloren momenten, die de drive weghalen uit de voorstelling en je gedachten doen afdwalen, maar ergens klopt het ook bij het levenstraject van deze mannen. Once I was lost, but now I’m found hebben ze elkaar terug bijeengeraapt, gooien ze elkaar in de lucht, versterken ze elkaar, dragen ze elkaar. Zoals ze gekomen zijn, vertrekken ze ook weer. Menselijke bagage in de hand. Een vaarwel onder een kippenvelslotsong van Tengblads klaterbeken stem. Deze harde bolsters hebben ons hun o zo blanke pit getoond. Nooit gratuit of pathetisch, maar eerlijk en met zin voor relativering en poëzie. In het Zweeds betekent ‘under’ naar het schijnt ook ‘wonder’. Dat zegt alles over deze mannen.
