Dat de circuswereld bulkt van de familiebanden, is een historisch feit dat vandaag nog steeds geldt. Circusmagazine zoekt boeiende bloedverwanten op en haalt ze voor de lens. In deze editie: nonkel Karel Creemers en neef Corneel Didier.
Karel Creemers (56): “Bloedband… Is het de binnen- of de buitenband? (lacht) Maar wij zijn dus nonkel en neef. Corneel is de zoon van mijn zus zaliger, die 22 jaar geleden is gestorven.”
Corneel (29): “Ja.”
Karel: “Een droevig verhaal natuurlijk, maar bon, daar zit het leven vol mee. En uiteindelijk is, zoals ge ziet, alles goed gekomen.”
Corneel: “Plus ou moins, toch.” (lacht)
Karel: “Dus ja, veel meer valt daar eigenlijk niet over te zeggen.”

Corneel: “Als kind ging ik in de vakanties altijd mee met Karel in het circus. Soms een paar dagen, soms een maand. De ene keer naar Spanje, dan andere keer naar Nederland. Ik vond dat de max.”
Karel: “Hij was zodanig enthousiast dat hij vanop de tribune luidop vertelde wat er allemaal stond te gebeuren. Hij is ook een keer op het podium gesprongen om mij te helpen uit een dwangbuis te geraken. Maar kijk, daardoor is hij er uiteindelijk ook zelf in gerold.”
Corneel: “Veel mensen die mij zien spelen (bij ‘SWING’ van Circus Ronaldo, red.), zeggen dat ik ‘een haarke’ weg heb van Karel. Maar wat wil je, hij is mijn grote voorbeeld. Alle humor, fantasie, die n’importe quoi, … heb ik allemaal aan Karel te danken. Ik ken al zijn trukendozen.”
Karel: “Dat is logisch, hé, dat je dingen meepikt, of je dat nu wilt of niet. Ik had dat vroeger ook met ‘den Danny’ (Ronaldo, red.). Met hem is het allemaal begonnen, hé. Het moet iets van dertig jaar geleden zijn dat hij vroeg of ik niet mee wou trekken met zijn circus. De dag erop stond mijn valies klaar, en kijk, we zijn nog altijd op baan.”

Corneel: “Ik ben lang straatmuzikant geweest.”
Karel: “Hij speelt wreed goed accordeon. Veel beter dan ik. Ik heb het hem wel geleerd, maar hij is er op verder gegaan. Hij kan ergens binnen komen en tien minuten later staat heel het café te dansen. Ik kan dat niet. Ge moet daar lef voor hebben, hé.”
Corneel: “Ik was dus gestopt met school en op straat beginnen spelen. Ik vond dat plezant. De mensen die u goed vinden, blijven efkes staan en geven wat geld. De anderen lopen gewoon door. Heel simpel. Maar ja, daarmee red je het niet, natuurlijk. Ik ben dan in toestanden van de VDAB terechtgekomen en heb mij uiteindelijk geschoold als fietsenmaker. De dag dat ik mijn contract ging tekenen, belde Nanosh (Ronaldo, red.) met de vraag of ik niet wou meewerken aan zijn nieuwe voorstelling.”
Karel: “Zijn valies stond direct klaar.”

Karel: “We komen altijd al goed overeen. We amuseren ons als we samen zijn.”
Corneel: “Al gebeurt het dat we drie uur bij elkaar zitten en geen woord zeggen. Dat kan toch ook alleen maar met een bloedband, hé?”
Karel: “We gaan zeker ooit nog samen een voorstelling maken. We hebben al veel goeie ideeën, maar ja, met ideeën alleen geraak je niet ver, hé.”
Corneel: “We zijn er niet zo goed in om onszelf te coachen en…”
Karel: “… te disciplineren. Ik neig nogal snel naar mijn zetel bij de stoof.” (lacht)
Corneel: “Zolang we er niet concreet aan beginnen, met een camera, wat kostuums, wat props, iemand die ons advies geeft…”
Karel: “Wat budget zou ook handig zijn, want we kunnen het ons niet permitteren om een paar maanden op droog zaad te zitten. Het is zo al moeilijk genoeg om als artiest uw kop boven water te houden.”
Corneel: “Maar we gaan er toch eens werk van maken, hé.”
Karel: “Da’s de essentie van kunst: ge moet het gewoon doen. En ge moet serieus op uw bek durven gaan.”
