De Gentse Bijlokekaai. Sinds een jaar heeft les ballets C de la B er een eigen dansstudio. “Na 25 jaar eindelijk een eigen stek voor de Balletten, een plek waar je thuis kunt komen na maanden toeren. Het is een zalig gevoel,” zegt choreograaf Alain Platel. Momenteel is hij volop bezig met repeteren aan een nieuw stuk (werktitel ‘Out of Context’). “Dat vind ik het fijnste moment: de repetities. Wanneer iedereen met eigen ideeën aankomt en alles nog alle kanten opkan. Wanneer de voorstelling nog in de lucht hangt.” Niet verwonderlijk voor iemand die als kind trapezist wou worden.
Alain Platel (53) stichtte in 1984 les ballets C de la B (vroeger voluit les ballets Contemporains de la Belgique). Een kwarteeuw later zijn de Balletten – zoals Platel de groep kortweg noemt – uitgegroeid tot een succesvol dansgezelschap in binnen- en buitenland dat faam heeft verworven met een eclectische mix van hedendaagse dans, teksttheater en muziek. Ophefmakend, niet in het minst ook door de producties die hij samen met andere Gentenaar Arne Sierens maakte: ‘Moeder en Kind’, ‘Allemaal Indiaan’ en ‘Bernadetje’ (de botsautootjes!). Spektakel, kermisachtig, amusement: Platel heeft die invloeden nooit geschuwd. Ook die van het circus niet.
“Toen ze me als kind vroegen wat ik wou worden, antwoordde ik steevast trapezist. We hadden thuis in den hof een schommel met zo’n kleine trapeze en daar organiseerde ik met mijn zussen en kinderen uit de buurt circusvoorstellingen. Ik ging elk jaar ook naar het circus op het Sint-Pietersplein. Toen ik een jaar of tien was, ben ik na het zien van een mimevoorstelling in theater Hoste-Sabbattini er ook les gaan volgen.”
Is het toeval dat verschillende van je dansers een achtergrond in het circus hebben?
Alain Platel: “Het is nooit mijn opzet om circusartiesten te rekruteren voor mijn voorstellingen. Ik moet ‘verliefd worden’ op mijn dansers. Ik kies met mensen samen te werken om wie ze zijn en om hun eigen unieke bewegingstaal, waar ze vandaan komen is voor mij minder belangrijk. Slangenvrouw Iona Kewney, die danste in de voorstelling ‘VSPRS,’ of Juliana Neves (doek/tissue/aerial silk) en Matthieu Desseigne-Ravel (grondacrobatie) waarmee ik momenteel samenwerk: net zoals dat het geval is voor al mijn dansers, ga ik met hen op zoek naar hoe ze hun talent creatief kunnen ontwikkelen. Mensen die bij de Balletten terecht komen, tonen automatisch al een openheid, de interesse en de durf om met de ervaring die ze hebben andere wegen op te zoeken.
“Juliana had bij Cirque du Soleil een act gemaakt waarin zij ook de hoofdrol speelde. Ze heeft die act meer dan duizend keer opgevoerd. Duizend keer! Kan je je dat inbeelden?! Met die act had ze eigenlijk tot aan haar pensioen kunnen voortdoen en goed geld verdienen, maar dat was voor haar op een bepaald moment niet genoeg meer. Maar evengoed heb je circusartiesten voor wie dat wel voldoende is. Zo is er in Cirque du Soleil een man die een fenomenale jongleeract met ballen heeft. Hij heeft geen enkele andere ambitie dan dat verder te doen. Ik vraag me af of die gast op zijn sterfbed niet zal denken: ‘Shit maat, is dat het enige wat ik gedaan heb met mijn leven, met ballekes gooien?’ Anderzijds heb ik daar ook bewondering voor: het feit dat iemand – zeker in deze hectische tijden met zoveel keuzemogelijkheden – zo gedreven voor één iets durft te gaan en zijn ganse leven alleen maar daarop focust. Het is bijna alsof iemand vandaag de dag zou kiezen om priester te worden of in ’t klooster te gaan.” (lacht)
Enkele jaren geleden was je voorzitter van de Prix Jeunes Talents Cirque, toen nog een Franse prijs voor jong circustalent, sinds dit jaar een Europees initiatief. Wat is je toen opgevallen?
“Hoe origineel sommige van die gasten uit de hoek komen. Zoveel vernieuwende technieken heb ik niet gezien, de basisprincipes blijven dezelfde: je kan bij wijze van spreken met drie of met acht balletjes jongleren, maar daar houdt het ook op. Dacht ik. Maar het was ongelooflijk om zien hoe origineel ze dat weten te verpakken. Wat me daarbij het meest opviel en dat ik als een belangrijke vernieuwing zie, is het feit dat de circusartiesten ook gaan spelen met hun persoonlijkheid in hun act.
Het circus heeft de voorbije twintig jaar een enorme evolutie doorgemaakt. Het ‘klassieke’ circus is op zoek gegaan naar theatrale waarden waarbij tegelijk de familiale sfeer van het traditionele circus bewaard blijft. En dan heb je de nouveau cirque met als grote voorbeeld Cirque du Soleil. Ik snap de criticasters die dat vreselijk afgelikt vinden, maar toch fascineert het me: de perfectie waarmee artiesten kunsten uitvoeren en de spectaculaire show waarin dat gegoten wordt. Ik ben met mijn vader, die ziek geweest was en toen in een zware periode zat, naar Cirque du Soleil geweest. Hij heeft nog weken gesproken over hoeveel deugd hem dat had gedaan. Gelukkig beginnen we ook binnen de podiumkunsten terug te beseffen dat we niet vies moeten zijn van het woord entertainment, integendeel dat het zeer waardevol kan zijn. Dat is iets wat ik ook herken in mijn werk. Ik heb altijd geflirt met de grenzen van het populaire en het triviale. Ik heb er nooit schrik voor gehad, ik ben er wel op gepakt geweest, meermaals, maar daar heb ik me nooit iets van aangetrokken.”
Zie je nog andere parallellen tussen circus en les ballets C de la B?
“In circus is virtuositeit geen vies woord. In hedendaagse dans is er lange tijd een gêne geweest voor het klassieke en – hand in eigen boezem – ik ben daar met de Balletten ook deels verantwoordelijk voor. Mijn dansers krijgen nu klassieke balletles, ik weet al lang dat ik topdansers in huis heb, maar tijdens die balletlessen blijkt zoiets des te meer. Je hoeft je niet te schamen voor virtuositeit, in die zin dat het ook een taal kan zijn die meer vertelt dan louter ‘kijk eens wat ik kan’. Als je daar als maker én als toeschouwer durft doorheen te kijken tenminste. In ‘VSPRS’ hebben we de virtuositeit niet geschuwd, de keren dat ik heb moeten horen dat mijn dansers show aan ‘t geven waren! Dat is voor mijn dansers, die vaak een opleiding van meer dan tien jaar achter de rug hebben, pijnlijk om horen. Ik heb ze echt moeten aansporen om te tonen wat ze kunnen, hen moeten zeggen: als je toch een voortrekkersrol wil spelen, laat het dan deze zijn.”
Vanwaar die afkeer voor het virtuoze in moderne dans?
“Moderne kunst moet werken op herkenbaarheid, mensen moeten er zichzelf in kunnen herkennen. Ik vind dat quatsch. Ik herinner me hoe ten tijde van ‘Allemaal Indiaan’ in het Nieuwpoorttheater een avond voor de vierde wereldmensen werd georganiseerd. Ik heb er niets op tegen dat ze mensen uit de vierde wereld uitnodigen voor een voorstelling, maar maak er dan a.u.b. geen thema-avond van! Soit, uiteindelijk hebben we toch gespeeld en achteraf peilde ik naar hun reacties. Iemand zei: ik had verwacht dat het iets met cowboys en indianen zou zijn, maar ik heb gewoon de miserie gezien die ikzelf al iedere dag meemaak. En ik dacht: je hebt gelijk, je zou meer genieten van Cirque du Soleil.
Het omgekeerde geldt ook: ‘Wolf’ (de legendarische dansvoorstelling met de vlagverbranding en de honden op scène, red.) hebben we gespeeld in Opéra Garnier in Parijs. En dat was bingo, omdat je inbreekt in een andere wereld, een bastion van klassieke opera. Ik vind het veel interessanter om met onze dansvoorstellingen terecht te komen op plekken die niets met hedendaagse dans te maken hebben, zoals nu bijvoorbeeld ‘Ashes’ van Koen Augustijnen dat op het Circusfestival van Theater op de Markt stond. Omdat je op die manier interessante spanningen opzoekt.”
