Ik associeer een atelier met een groezelige stenen hangar waar er aan auto’s en tractoren gewerkt wordt door een dikke man met een stoppelbaard in een vuile overall waarvan er enkele knopen ontbreken en waar er een verjaarde kalender van Pirelli hangt.
Maar ook aan een werkplaats waar alles gefikst wordt, waar ik terecht kan als mijn garagist het niet meer weet om betaalbaar mijn oude wagen te herstellen en waar ik bij het betalen nog napraat met een flesje bier. Misschien kan mijn associatie dienen als een metafoor voor de circusateliers?
Alle circusateliers zijn gestart uit een passie voor circus en een tomeloze inzet van een of meerdere individuen. Met vallen en opstaan worden er oplossingen gezocht voor alle hindernissen. Kortom, wordt er gefikst.
Alle circusateliers draaien nu volop op de drive van de medewerkers die hun liefde voor circus doorgeven aan nieuwe generaties jongeren. En die liefde is volgens mij veel meer dan talentgericht. Een circusatelier is rijk aan meerdere maatschappelijk waardevolle lagen. Kinderen leren er bewegen en zich beheersen, leren er met elkaar en met zichzelf omgaan, leren talenten bij zichzelf ontdekken en ontwikkelen op hun individueel niveau, zijn fier op wat zij kunnen en een vriendje niet. En sommige talenten zullen verder gaan en zich volop engageren in een circustraject via een circushogeschool en een artistieke carrière. Anderen worden misschien ooit docent. Maar bij allemaal zal de liefde voor de oudste kunstvorm, namelijk circus, op een of andere manier geplant zijn.
De circusateliers draaien ook op heel wat gratis energie, wat mooi is, maar ook problematisch kan worden. De sector professionaliseert, zo is de indexering en anciënniteit van de personeelskosten een constante bezorgdheid bij de opmaak van een sluitende begroting. Het is makkelijk te stellen dat circusateliers voor iedereen toegankelijk moeten zijn door betaalbare inschrijvingsgelden, maar hoe dan ook moet een atelier zijn rekeningen kunnen betalen. De Vlaamse overheid en de betreffende lokale besturen moeten zich daar bewust van zijn of – om het met een boutade te zeggen – je kan geen omelet bakken zonder eieren te breken.
Een aantal ateliers zijn nog in volle ontwikkeling, anderen zijn al jaren bezig en gevestigde waarden. Het zal daarbij volgens mij een uitdaging zijn om zich dynamisch te blijven vernieuwen en inhoudelijk verder te groeien.
Ik vind het ongelooflijk wat circusateliers vandaag bereiken. Niet enkel de kinderen en jongeren, maar hun hele entourage van familie en vrienden worden geënthousiasmeerd om circus te ontdekken. Als ik een eindejaarsproject of een productiegroep zie, word ik steeds geraakt door de goesting van de jongeren en hun begeleiders. Maar ook door het engagement en het niveau. Respect. Nu nog een duidelijke regelgeving voor de middelen.
