Vergis u niet, de ondankbaarste job ter wereld is niet WC-madam, onderwaterlasser of schoonmaakster in een spermabank. Die titel is voorbehouden aan minister van Cultuur.
Een minister wordt uiteraard beter betaald, maar zijn job is een onuitputtelijke bron van frustratie, ontgoocheling en zelfhaat. Het is Mission Impossible van bij het begin. Het budget is te klein, de vraag is te groot, de kans op slagen gering. En dat alles in een samenleving die cultuur op de vierendertigste plaats van de prioriteitenlijst zet.
Een hyperkritisch veld van gepassioneerde amateurs en egocentrische artiesten zit ongeduldig te wachten op de eerste misstap. Elk afgunstig om wat de ander krijgt, overtuigd dat hun experimentele jazz, multimedia-theatervoorstelling of ready-mades uit gerecycleerde pampers het belangrijkste zijn.
Verder wacht elke minister van Cultuur een stapel onmogelijk objectief te beantwoorden vragen: Gevestigde waarden belonen of nieuw talent stimuleren? Zouden we die ganse opera niet beter afschaffen? Moet ik niet dringend zelf nog eens iets gaan bekijken?
Genuanceerd en overdacht handelen lijkt dus een onmogelijke opgave, iedereen tevreden stellen nog meer. Een patstelling die roept om een radicale ommezwaai. Om de minister daarbij te helpen alvast het volgende voorstel: het volledige cultuurbudget gaat vanaf nu integraal naar circus.
Elk circusatelier krijgt zijn eigen perfect uitgeruste zaal, elke leerling zijn eigen personal coach.
Professionele opleidingen, residentieplekken en festivals schieten als paddenstoelen uit de grond.
Nooit meer lege zalen of halfvolle tenten, nu het publiek geld krijgt om naar het circus te komen.
En we kopen Cirque du Soleil op, gewoon voor de lol!
