Naar aanleiding van het overlijden op dinsdag 21 juli 2015 in het UZ Gent van oud-circusartiest Giovanni Zadra, vond André De Poorter het passend even terug te blikken op zijn verdienstelijke carrière en die van zijn gezin.
Giovanni, door iedereen die hem kende Gianni genoemd, werd geboren op 16 december 1925 in Gardolo, een plaatsje in het Italiaanse Trento waar hij lid werd van een turnclub. Zijn acrobatische talenten bleven niet verborgen en op een zekere dag werd hij ontdekt door circusartiesten. Met een partner ging hij een duo vormen en samen gingen ze als equilibristen ‘The Tino Brothers’ optreden in circussen.
Zijn latere echtgenote Rosa De Rycke (°1932), werd geboren in het Circus Demuynck waar vader Charles toen trombonist was. Hij wilde dat zijn dochter een nummer leerde dat ze alleen kon brengen, zonder van iemand af te hangen. Zo debuteerde ze op haar twaalfde als draadloopster Rose-Resy. Contracten kreeg ze onder meer bij de circussen Demuynck, Semay, in het Gentse theater Scala of het Hippodrome van Eastbourne (Engeland) en zelfs bij het Circus Williams-Althoff-Belli. Dat was in het Koninklijk Circus in Brussel, in januari 1955, en blijft voor haar de mooiste herinnering uit haar artiestenleven, want ze trad er op voor de koninklijke familie. Soms kon men haar ook bewonderen als acrobatische danseres ‘Miss La Riche’.
In 1954 belandde Giovanni met zijn partner in ons land en leerde hij bij het Circus De Rycke-Semay zijn toekomstige levensgezellin Rosa kennen, die er in het circus van haar oom optrad als koorddanseres. Al vlug werden ze een koppel, maar na dat circusseizoen had Gianni met zijn partner nog een zes maanden durend contract af te werken op Palma de Mallorca. Eens terug huwde hij met zijn geliefde op 23 november 1955. Samen gingen ze op tournee, waarbij hij zijn echtgenote assisteerde bij haar draadnummer als ‘Rose-Resy’ en zij hem begeleidde tijdens zijn handstandacrobatiek als ‘Les Giovannis’.
Zo waren ze beiden als hecht en echt team te zien in de Gentse circussen De Rycke-Semay, Demuynck en Wiener, bij de Vlaamse circussen Apollinaris (Tondeurs) en Jhony, en verder onder meer in de circussen Berliner, Americano (Spanje), Rebernigg (Duitsland) en Salamon (Nederland). Maar ook in variététheaters oogstten ze applaus zoals het Astoria Bremen en het Hansa Theater Hamburg en in eigen land in Oud België Gent en Antwerpen. Hun laatste contract was in 1977 bij het Zwitserse Circus Nock. Daarna stopte Giovanni op 52-jarige leeftijd met zijn hoogstaand nummer, de fysieke last werd te groot. Dat is nu eenmaal het lot van alle acrobaten.
De volgende generatie
Jaren voordien was het artiestengezin uitgebreid met twee dochters, Linda en Gina, die al heel vroeg in het artiestenvak werden opgeleid en met hun ouders meereisden. Linda werd draadloopster zoals haar moeder. Soms traden ze samen op als ‘Les Rose-Resy’. Na haar huwelijk vond Linda haar weg in de variétéwereld. Met haar Duitse echtgenoot Tristan Iser, een muzikaal talent, vond zij in Münster haar thuishaven en vormde zij het muzikale duo ‘Tristan en Linda’ dat meermaals op de bühne stond van het Hamburgse befaamde Hansa Theater.
Gina, de jongste, die van haar moeder het draadlopen aanleerde en deze discipline nog steeds beoefent, werd van jongs af door haar vader opgeleid tot een uitstekende equilibriste, een nummer in dezelfde stijl als wat hij zelf presenteerde, maar wel uniek voor een dame. Het nummer bestond hoofdzakelijk uit handstand- en evenwichtsoefeningen op gestapelde blokken en werd besloten met een ongeëvenaarde prestatie: de afdaling van een trap van vijftien treden, springend en zich in evenwicht houdend op één hand. Zij was de enige vrouw die deze krachttoer tot een goed einde wist te brengen. Het resultaat van jarenlang dagelijks volhardend oefenen. Deze act op piëdestal was een combinatie van kracht en sierlijkheid, het ideale huwelijk tussen techniek en esthetiek en die, spijts de inspanning en concentratie, werd uitgevoerd met de glimlach op het gelaat.
Gina debuteerde in 1971 op negenjarige leeftijd toen het gezin optrad in het Berlijnse Urania Theater. Ze verscheen op het podium en bewees haar talent door de handstand van haar vader na te doen. Een jaar later stond ze hier al op het programma van Wiener Circus. Daarna kreeg ze als Gina Giovannis, met haar artiestennaam verwijzend naar de voornaam van haar vader, engagementen bij gekende circusondernemingen: Arnardo en Merano (Noorwegen), Skratt (Zweden), Dannebrog (Denemarken), Nock en Go (Zwitserland), Elfie-Althoff-Jacobi (Oostenrijk), Krone, Romanza, Barelli, Barum en Williams-Alfthoff (Duitsland), Herman Renz (Nederland), Pinder (Frankrijk), het Belgische Circus Apollo, het Koninklijk Circus Brussel en het Wereldcircus in het Antwerpse Sportpaleis. Ze was een graag geziene gaste in Nederland tijdens de kerst- en nieuwjaarsperiode zoals Haarlem, Roermond (Cirque d’Hiver), Rotterdam (Ahoy Rotterdam) en Utrecht (Roberti). Ze oogstte applaus in het Duitse pretpark Phantasialand en variététheaters zoals Clara Bazel, Tivoli en Rode Kro Kopenhagen, en ontelbare keren in het Hansa Theater Hamburg. Ze was ook te zien in de James Bond film ‘Octopussy’ met Roger Moore.
Met fierheid mag Gina terugblikken op enkele hoogtepunten in haar loopbaan, zoals in 1981 toen ze tijdens het Circusfestival van Monte-Carlo de ereprijs André Rivollet mocht ontvangen en in 1990 wanneer ze op het Wereldfestival van het Cirque de Demain brons veroverde. In 1983 kreeg ze hier de trofee Anne-Marie Puttevils wegens het feit dat ze door haar artistieke prestatie als het ware onze circusambassadrice was in het buitenland. Dus geen gebrek aan referenties.
Sinds een jaar is ze gestopt met haar handstandnummer. Als koorddanseres wenst ze nog een tijd door te gaan, de act heeft nog niets aan waarde ingeboet. Maar daarnaast heeft ze nu een hondenact gecreëerd, die heel goed bevalt bij het publiek, want ze wil niet op haar lauweren rusten. Dat hebben we kunnen vaststellen tijdens een optreden in het Harry Malter Park in Heusden waar ze dit seizoen te zien is. Ze wilde dit jaar geen contract in het buitenland aannemen wegens de ziekte van haar vader. Volgend jaar is ze misschien weer op reis en wanneer ze tot rust wil komen, kan men haar treffen in Zwijnaarde, want daar heeft de familie Zadra-De Rycke al jaren haar thuishaven.
