Op vrijdag 26 juni wordt de eerste Vlaamse Cultuurprijs voor Circus uitgereikt. Heuglijk nieuws dat een tijdje terug meteen werd opgepikt door diverse media. Alleen jammer dat de beeldredacteuren van dienst een collectieve off-day hadden en het Vlaamse circus reduceerden tot stereotiepe en ronduit foutieve beelden. Maar het probleem ligt helaas dieper.
De Standaard Online publiceerde een foto van een Oekraïense circusartiest (kijk hier). Deredactie.be (het online platform van de VRT) deed nog beter en plaatste een olifant uit een Indisch circus op hun site (kijk hier). Weetje: de laatste olifant die in een Vlaams circus optrad, moet begin jaren 2000 geweest zijn. Sindsdien zwoeren de circussen in samenspraak met de Vlaamse regering de wilde dieren af.
Een beeldredacteur is toch ook een journalist die zijn bronnen moet checken? Welke journalist plaatst bij een artikel over Vlaamse muziek een foto van Madonna? Wie zou bij het nieuws over een Vlaamse Cultuurprijs voor Strips een foto van Mickey Mouse publiceren? Google twee seconden op ‘circus in Vlaanderen’ of ‘Vlaams circus’ en je vindt direct tientallen toepasselijke beelden. Eén telefoontje naar Circuscentrum en je krijgt een prachtige circusfoto in hoge resolutie. De beeldredacteuren hadden duidelijk hun dagje niet.
Maar het probleem ligt natuurlijk veel dieper. De meeste niet-ingewijden denken bij ‘circus’ in de eerste plaats nog steeds aan (wilde) dieren, tenten, rode neuzen en oversized schoenen. Die hardnekkige stereotypen zijn gemakkelijk te verklaren. Hoe divers circus vandaag is, zo eenduidig was het vroeger. Vandaag is er circustheater, straattheater, hedendaags circus, nomadisch circus, urban circus, circus voor meerwaardezoekers, circus op locatie, puur circus, commercieel circus, maatschappijkritisch circus, enzovoort. Vroeger – generaties lang – was er enkel ‘circus’: een opeenvolging van dieren, clowns, acrobaten en goochelaars, vlotjes aaneen gesproken door de spreekstalmeester.
En natuurlijk hebben die stereotypen nog steeds bestaansrecht. Het klassieke circus is en blijft een essentieel onderdeel van het circus. Maar het is er wel degelijk een onderdeel van. In ons jaarboek van Vlaamse circusgezelschappen staan 95 compagnieën. Acht daarvan kan je als klassiek definiëren. Alle 87 andere vallen onder het amalgaam aan soorten dat hedendaags of nieuw circus wordt genoemd. Of zoals minister van Cultuur Sven Gatz verderop in dit magazine zegt: de zijtak van de circusboom is inmiddels dikker dan de stam zelf.
Maar die zijtak, hoe dik ook, is nog jong. Circus is een kunstvorm in volle ontwikkeling, zowel in Vlaanderen als overal in Europa. De meeste circusateliers zijn nog geen tien jaar oud, circushogescholen zijn op één hand te tellen, circusgezelschappen spelen meer en meer in cultuurcentra en op festivals, maar slechts een paar namen doen een belletje rinkelen bij de cultuurminnende man in de straat. Voor het grote publiek bestaat er enkel traditioneel circus of Cirque du Soleil. Voor veel journalisten helaas ook. De beeldvorming blijft daarom steken in clichés en onwaarheden.
Het mag duidelijk zijn: het kwalitatieve werk van de afgelopen jaren – door artiesten, docenten, organisatoren, programmatoren, … – heeft nog te weinig ogen geopend, te weinig stereotypen doorbroken. Er moet dringend een inhaalbeweging gemaakt worden. De circussector moet assertiever worden. Zelfbewuster. Proactief de beeldvorming mee bepalen. Jan met de pet moet inzien dat het circus van nu een brede kunstvorm is met verschillende stromingen en stijlen. Maar dit is geen werk voor Circuscentrum alleen. Van hoe meer kanten de sneeuwballen komen, hoe sneller het effect zal volgen. Laat ons hopen dat de uitreiking van de eerste Vlaamse Cultuurprijs voor Circus zo’n sneeuwbal is.
