Een redactielid van CircusMagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wondere wereld van het circus.
Ik ben de laatste tijd veel aan het denken. Over circus. U weet wel, dat ding met acrobaten, rode neuzen, gedomesticeerde dieren en veel te dure popcorn. Dat ding waar verbazing en verwondering centraal staan. Dat ding met virtuoze lijven en halsbrekende toeren. Dat ding waar de techniek heerst. Een beetje zoals in de voorrondes van The Voice van Vlaanderen: het gaat niet om de mens, de zanger of de artiest, het gaat doodgewoon om de stem. In circus gaat het al te vaak doodgewoon om de buitengewone technieken en de instant verwondering die ze teweeg brengen. Achterwaartse salto op een strak koord tien meter boven de grond: ooh.
Vakkundig verpakt met muziek, grime, kostuums en een flinterdunne verhaallijn is Cirque du Soleil de meest bekende emanatie van dit instantcircus. Het mikt volledig op het behagen van het publiek: een lach, een traan, een verhoogde hartslag, een bulderend applaus. Ik geef toe: ik was zelf ook serieus onder de indruk toen ik in 2013 ‘Kooza’ zag in Knokke. Mijn hart maakte geregeld een sprongetje en ik zal zeker een paar keer ‘Oooh!’ geroepen hebben (met overslaande stem; dat heb ik van mijn vader). De techniek was van een zodanig wereldniveau dat je er moeilijk niets bij kon voelen. Maar erg diep ging het niet. Terug thuis gaf ik mijn vrouw een zoen en droomde van onze reis in Toscane.
Cirque du Soleil staat niet alleen. Tal van gezelschappen en artiesten – uiteraard uit Noord-Amerika, maar evengoed uit Europa, ja, zelfs België – zijn op dezelfde leest geschoeid en creëren voorstellingen en acts die integraal draaien om spectaculaire technieken en grappige fratsen. De circustechniek wordt ingezet om een kortstondige bevrediging (het wow-effect) te bekomen. De buitengewone prestaties van de artiesten zijn zowel het middel als het einddoel van de voorstelling. Het resultaat: circus dat imponeert, verwondert en verbaast. Maar daar stopt het dan ook.
Ik word dieper geraakt door voorstellingen waar de circustechniek (of de humor, het risico, de virtuositeit, de manipulatie) wordt ingezet om iets anders te vertellen. Om vragen te stellen, dieper te graven, tegenstrijdige gevoelens op te roepen. Om iets te creëren dat door elke toeschouwer anders geïnterpreteerd kan worden. Circustechniek blijft cruciaal, maar dan als middel, niet als doel.
De clou is vervolgens om geen toneeltje te brengen met een aantal circustechnieken in verweven. Nee, de circustechniek zelf kan – afhankelijk van de manier waarop ze wordt aangewend – perfect een fenomenale boodschap uitdragen. Ik moet dan altijd denken aan die scène in ‘De nos jours (notes on the circus)’ van het Franse gezelschap Ivan Mosjoukine, waarin een van de artiesten keer op keer op dezelfde manier van een verhoog in de Chinese mast sprong; zijn absurde sisyfusarbeid stond magistraal symbool voor het fucking leven zelf. En ook de rijke geschiedenis en aloude codes van het circus kunnen doelbewust ingezet – en zelfs volledig geïntegreerd – worden om diepere (andere) betekenissen te creëren. Treffende voorbeelden hiervan zijn ‘Le Sort du Dedans’ van Baro d’Evel (de onmogelijkheid tot liefde) en ‘Fidelis Fortibus’ van Circus Ronaldo (hoop doet leven).
De essentie van circus is tegelijkertijd zijn grootste valkuil: de indrukwekkende techniek, die een normale mens niet beheerst en waarvoor je jaren hebt getraind. Het louter etaleren van wat je kan, is al voldoende om een staande ovatie te krijgen. Kijk mama, zonder handen! Voorstellingen die daarop inzetten, blijven steken in entertainment (soms plat, soms heerlijk licht of met een welgekomen hoek af). Circus dat er echter in slaagt om diepgang en diffuse onderliggende boodschappen te creëren, bezit de unieke kracht om de wereld van entertainment en die van pure kunst te vermengen tot iets, ik wik mijn woorden, buitenaards. Dan kan geen enkele andere kunstvorm er tegenop.
