Een volle tent enthousiaste toeschouwers, een knap spelend Oekraïens circusorkest met sterke arrangementen, jonge acrobaten die de piste elke seconde vullen, bonte dieren die quasi zelfstandig samenwerken en een groep dertigers die hun liefde voor het circus elke dag opnieuw waarmaken en doorgeven… Dat is het jonge Duitse circus Charles Knie.
Charles Knie en zijn familie stopten in 2007 met hun circus. Ze maken nu hun droom waar in Australië waar ze een dierenpark hebben uitgebouwd. Charles is een familielid van de Zwitserse Kniedynastie. Zijn moeder Eliane trok lang geleden weg uit het Zwitserse circus en Charles bouwde in Duitsland vanaf 1995 zijn eigen circus uit dat vooral uit goede dierenacts bestond. Toen Charles wegtrok naar Australië was zijn circus te koop. De toen 32-jarige Sascha Melnjak zag iets in de naam Knie en kocht alle rechten.
Hij programmeerde direct in 2007 een hoogstaand programma. Het was meteen, zowel in de Duitse pers als bij het publiek, raak. Melnjak: “Op mijn zesde trok ik met mijn oma voor het eerst naar het circus Althoff. Sindsdien fascineert het circus mij. Met dit circus zijn mijn kinderwensen vervuld. Ik kan me niets anders meer voorstellen. Circus is voor mij continu bewegen, met veel mensen uit vele nationaliteiten en met veel dieren samenwerken. Circus is voor mij artistiek werk, clownerie én veel diersoorten in een heel humane, open dressuur. Maar ook het circusorkest neemt een grote plaats in mijn begroting in. Met zo’n hedendaags programma begeesteren we vele generaties samen. Ik zoek charismatische artiesten die levensvreugde en sympathie uitstralen.”
De Stuttgarter Melnjak werkte zich, na zijn handelsstudies, in het moderne circus in door persmanager en tourneeleider te zijn bij diverse circussen. In 1999 stichtte hij het Kerstcircus van Heilbronn en kon daar ervaren hoe hij een circus met zijn waarden en normen kon realiseren én tot een duurzaam succes maken. Vorig jaar haalde Heilbronn zo’n 80.000 bezoekers.
Snel koos Melnjak ervoor om samen met een groep dertigers het bescheiden, oorspronkelijk meer variétécircus uit te bouwen tot een toonaangevend groot-circus. En dat lukt hem ook aardig. De meesten, zoals de Poolse dierenleraar Marek Jama, komen niet uit circusfamilies. Ze werken gestaag hun circus verder uit: moderne trailers, nieuwe tentstructuren. Dit seizoen kochten ze ook nog het grote winterkwartier van het Circus Siemoneit Barum in het Noord-Duitse Einbeck. Daarnaast neemt Melnjak ook nog vanaf de komende winter het wintercircus van Offenburg over.
Melnjak haalt nu met zijn circus ruim 500.000 bezoekers per jaar gespreid over 50 Duitse steden. Nu komt daar dit jaar ook nog het Offenburg Kerstcircus bij zodat Melnjak met zijn drie circusproducties samen jaarlijks rond de 650.000 circusliefhebbers aan hun trekken laat komen. Recent lauwerde ook de gezaghebbende Frankfurter Zeitung Melnjak en zijn groep als één van de meest betrouwbare circusadressen in Duitsland. Het circus staat in Duitsland onder strenge dierenhuishouding-wetgeving en wordt elk jaar zo’n 50 maal uitvoerig gecontroleerd. Elke dag houdt het circus ook ‘open deur’ waar bezoekers zichzelf kunnen overtuigen hoe met de dieren respectvol wordt omgegaan.
Ik verliet Aken met een hoopgevend gevoel. Boeiend hoe Duitse dertigers op zo’n korte tijd een nieuw circus kunnen uitbouwen met klassieke ingrediënten en toch een heel eigentijds beeld. De verdienste van Sascha Melnjak is dat hij daadwerkelijk toont hoe klassiek geïnspireerd circus toch nog verder gaat dan puur, nostalgisch erfgoed en tezelfdertijd hoe het publiek in zeer grote getallen komt.
