Zoals elk jaar sloeg Midi Pyrénées in juli – letterlijk – zijn tenten op in Avignon tijdens het grootste theaterfestival van Europa. Plaats van dit jaarlijkse rendez-vous is steeds het Ile Pîot, een lommerrijke oase van rust en zomers Frans circusgevoel.
Op de site twee fluorescerende circustenten, een sportzaal voor de binnenvoorstellingen en een grote tribune voor de buitenvoorstelling ‘Larsen’ van Cie 220 Vols. Op het programma een mengeling van Belgische en Zuid-Franse circusgezelschappen: ‘onze’ Claudio Stellato met zijn wondermooie magie novelle parel ‘L’Autre’, de Franse-Italiaans-Nederlandse laureaten van Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe, My Laika!, met ‘Popcorn Machine’ en Subliminati Coorporation uit Toulouse met het straffe ‘File-Tone’.
Ook aanwezig waren de Franse ‘circusmonumenten’ van Les Acrostiches. Zoals de weinig originele titel ‘C’est quoi ce cirque!’ reeds deed vermoeden, brachten de heren van Les Acrostisches een tenenkrullende, cabareteske aaneenschakeling van foute liedjes en nog flauwere grappen. Kenzo Tokuoka (Le Carré Curieux) stelde op het Ile Pîot zijn nieuwe solovoorstelling ‘ds_ You can never be completely still’ voor, goed voor een 50 minuten durende choreografie voor een eenwieler en een grote zwarte rok. Voor zij die het Brusselse gezelschap Le Carré Curieux reeds aan het werk zagen: u hebt niets gemist met deze eentonige, door livemuziek begeleide ode aan een weinig tot de verbeelding sprekende circustechniek. Tenslotte waren er ook nog Cie Lapsus met de brave familievoorstelling ‘Six pieds sous terre’ en Cie EIA met ‘Capas’. Deze laatste kon u in juni reeds aan het werk zien op Humorologie in Marke en in oktober staan ze op het programma van Circo Circolo in Nederland. ‘Capas’ is origineel in z’n avontuurlijke verkenning van een zelfgebouwde kast en schommelstructuur, maar verliest helaas halverwege de focus om daarna helemaal te verdwalen in een nietszeggende herhaling van feel-good-deuntjes en hand-op-handacrobatie.
U hoort het al. Daar waar het Ile Pîot normaal gezien dé plek is voor een aantal frisse ontdekkingen in het circuslandschap van vandaag, werden we dit jaar vooral gelukkig van de slaatjes met eendenborst en sappige meloen die ze er serveren. Aangezien Midi Pyrénées (een gezamenlijke organisatie van Circa in Auch, La Grainerie in Toulouse en Théatre des Dôms in Avignon) een staalkaart toont van de nieuwe creaties uit Zuid-Frankrijk en Brussel, is het nog maar de vraag of de keuze deze keer niet scherp was of er dit jaar gewoon niets beters te tonen viel.
Anderzijds blijft dit kleine festival wel een mooi initiatief, en dat dan vooral op menselijk en ethisch vlak. Zo wordt de site onderhouden en verzorgd door de gezelschappen die er spelen en hangt er in de toiletten een groot bord waarop iedereen zijn of haar welwillende beurtrol invult. Ook de opbrengst van de ticketverkoop wordt, voorbij een bepaald gegarandeerd minimum, verdeeld over de verschillende gezelschappen. In vergelijking met de rest van het Off-festival in Avignon, waar gezelschappen zich vaak diep in de schulden werken doordat de huurprijs van de theaterzaaltjes in Avignon zo ongelofelijk astronomisch de pan uitswingt, is de regeling op het Ile Pîot een ware weldaad. Hoe teleurstellend de artistieke kwaliteit er dit jaar ook was, de menselijke sfeer en het collectieve enthousiasme van zowel artiesten als organisatoren stond in schril contrast met de massahysterie van het Festival d’Avignon zelf. Circus als voorstel voor mens en wereld, dus. Nu nog de artistieke vernieuwing.
