Na 23 jaar gaat een van de Vlaamse boegbeelden van het hedendaagse straattheater en circus met pensioen. Fabien Audooren laat met MiramirO een succesvol festival achter in Gent. “Het publiek heeft ons altijd weten te vinden. De overheid heeft in de voorbije jaren een inhaalbeweging gemaakt maar er is nog veel werk aan de winkel.”
MiramirO-directeur Fabien Audooren vindt dat hij zijn tijd heeft gehad. “Ik ben dankbaar, maar nu is het aan de jonge mensen,” zegt hij met een glimlach.
Deze zomer gaat hij naar zijn oude liefde terug. “Ik koop 1.000 kg klei. Vele jaren lang heb ik geen tijd gehad om me daarmee bezig te houden. Elk weekend waren er immers circus- en straattheaterfestivals in binnen- en buitenland, van begin mei tot oktober toch. Thuis zijn, niet meer moeten, teruggaan naar de plastische kunsten uit mijn jeugd. Ik kijk er nu best naar uit.”
Geëngageerd apekot
Audooren herinnert zich nog hoe het begon. “Begin jaren zeventig ging onder impuls van Mong Rosseel van Vuile Mong en de Vieze Gasten het eerste buurthuis open, het soort initiatief dat we alleen uit Nederland kenden. Mong vroeg me of ik piano en gitaar wou spelen en toen ‘Het apekot’ (1974) een grote hit werd, speelden we 100 shows per jaar. Op allerhande events, van buurtfeesten over sociale acties tot protestmarsen, meestal gratis. De respons was erg fijn. Zo lasten de arbeiders van Vieille Montagne in Limburg voor ons een afbreekbaar podium ineen, tevreden als ze waren met onze muzikale opluistering van hun staking. We waren erg geëngageerd, wat wellicht verklaart waarom er altijd nieuwe mensen naar ons toekwamen. Met ideeën, maar evengoed met leuke nummers of circusacts.”
“Vanaf 1983 was ik tevens actief als muziekprogrammator voor Trefpunt op de Gentse Feesten. En op een dag zei Gie Baguet van Frans Brood Productions dat we absoluut een kijkje moesten nemen op het Festival d’Aurillac, een jaarlijkse straattheaterhappening in de Franse Auvergne. Zoiets, zei hij, zou geweldig zijn voor de Gentse Feesten. Baguet had gelijk. Toen we in 1989 Generik Vapeur zagen in Aurillac, waren we meteen verkocht. Dit moeten we ook doen, dachten we.”
“Via Vuile Mong hadden we natuurlijk al een grote politiek-maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en we waren al jaren bezig met dingen in open lucht, als medicijn tegen de toen nog erg reële verzuiling van de cultuurzalen. In Aurillac zagen we welk bijkomend potentieel het straattheater had. En dus zetten we een jaar later in Gent ook een festival op.”
Frankrijk als voorbeeld
“Bij de eerste editie in het Baudelopark brachten we behalve Generik Vapeur onder andere ook het erg vernieuwende Semola Teatre. Het publiek was er wild van. In het begin programmeerden we vooral Franse groepen. Daar kenden circus en straattheater immers een grote bloei. Later zagen we de Spaanse gezelschappen. En natuurlijk grepen we elke kans aan om ook artiesten van bij ons, zoals het duo Wurre Wurre, op de affiche te zetten. Vanaf 1992 begonnen we ook zelf producties te maken, liefst in samenwerking met andere initiatiefnemers, zoals het theaterfestival Boulevard uit het Nederlandse ’s Hertogenbosch.”
“Langzaam breidde het aantal samenwerkingen, vooral in Europees verband, zich uit. Altijd weer probeerden we mensen met verschillende achtergronden of afkomst te combineren. Dat was niet steeds makkelijk. Soms was de taal een ontzettende barrière, maar doorgaans lukte het best.”
“Frankrijk is nog steeds een voorbeeld voor ons, al was het maar omdat je er het Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC) en het Centre National des Arts de Rue (CNAR) hebt, die een enorme stimulans betekenen. Daarnaast zijn er nog tal van Lieux de fabrique, werkplaatsen waar creaties worden gemaakt, soms ook met een atelier voor kostuums of decorbouw. Precies omdat al die mogelijkheden er zijn, en omdat de Franse overheid de export van de voorstellingen sponsort met tussenkomst in de reis- en verblijfkosten, is er zoveel Frans werk te zien op festivals in de hele wereld.”
Werkplaats Vlaanderen?
“Bij ons in Vlaanderen daarentegen, is er alleen Dommelhof waar artiesten voor enige tijd kunnen logeren en werken op een geïntegreerde manier. Dit Limburgse centrum bedient uiteraard ook Antwerpen en Vlaams-Brabant, maar vanuit Gent gerekend is de afstand toch al 150 km. Daarom hebben we ook ontzettend geijverd voor de uitbouw van een tweede werkplaats, hier bij ons. Dat zou het creatiecentrum kunnen zijn voor Oost- en West-Vlaanderen.”
“Om onze vraag te ondersteunen, hebben Celine Verkest en ikzelf in 2006 een vergelijkend onderzoek gedaan over Franse, Nederlandse en Belgische werkplaatsen. De enige conclusie die je daaruit kon trekken, was dat de mogelijkheden in de buurlanden veel groter waren en onze verzuchting dus legitiem. Maar het heeft niet mogen helpen, de Gentse werkplaats is er tot op heden niet gekomen. Wellicht is dat de grote teleurstelling na zoveel jaren werk.”
“Vooral, de sociaal-maatschappelijke zin van circus en straattheater zijn absoluut bewezen. Circus en straattheater zijn laagdrempelige cultuurvormen: ze komen naar je toe. En aldus bereiken we mensen die wellicht nooit een voet zetten in een operahuis, theaterzaal of cultureel centrum. Precies daarom ook hebben we altijd voor kosteloze of erg goedkope tickets gezorgd. Ik zou het zonde vinden als iemand niet kon genieten van een voorstelling wegens de prijs van het toegangskaartje.”
“De waarde van circus en straattheater blijkt ook uit de sterk gestegen participatie. In de voorbije jaren hebben we in heel Vlaanderen circusscholen zien openen, met onderhand duizenden leerlingen. Zij leren niet alleen technische vaardigheden maar evengoed life skills. Er ontstaat een soort van gemeenschap waarbinnen respect, vertrouwen en waardering belangrijke waarden zijn. Het kan ook niet anders. Om bijvoorbeeld een menselijke piramide te maken, moet je elkaar vertrouwen. Eén fout manoeuvre en alles gaat mis voor iedereen. Je bent immers zo sterk als je zwakste schakel.”
Export van cultuur
“Terugblikkend, ben ik tevreden. We hebben veel kunnen realiseren. Ons festival heeft jaarlijks 40.000 tot 50.000 toeschouwers en sinds 2001 is er ook overheidssubsidiëring. Dat er in 2010 een apart Circusdecreet kwam, is evenzeer van belang. Het landschap wordt daardoor in kaart gebracht, er is een aanspreekpunt. Maar tegelijk zijn er te weinig middelen voor het creatieve luik.”
“Vooral als ik bedenk dat een hele nieuwe lichting nu afstudeert aan de circushogescholen van onder meer Brussel, dan vraag ik me af hoe die jonge mensen zonder hulp aan de bak zullen komen. Een soort van aanmoedigingspremie, of hoe je het ook wil noemen, zou een goed idee zijn. Bedenk immers dat er veel tijd voorbij gaat tussen het maken van een spektakel en het versieren van speelplekken. Ook bij dat laatste is ondersteuning erg belangrijk. Niet zelden heb je immers een introductie nodig bij een festival, opdat de programmatoren naar je stuk zouden komen kijken. Voor wie net begint, is dat niet eenvoudig. En ondertussen is het in financieel opzicht veelal erg penibel.”
“Vlaanderen zou mijns inziens ook een voorbeeld moeten nemen aan de Franse promotie van de export van cultuur. Als festivals weten dat overheden financieel tussenkomen, zijn ze al makkelijker geneigd om je te vragen. En dat werkt positief, zowel voor onze artiesten als voor de ontwikkelingen binnen het hedendaagse circus en straattheater. Maar in deze tijden van besparingen hoort niemand me dat graag zeggen, dat besef ik. Maar in dit soort dingen moeten we niet kortzichtig zijn.”
