In december publiceerde Bauke Lievens haar ‘First Open Letter to the Circus’. Daarin schreef ze over de noodzaak van het circusveld om zichzelf te herdefiniëren en riep ze op om mee te denken, te discussiëren en elkaar tegen te spreken. Een van de circusartiesten die deze oproep ter harte nam, was Quintijn Ketels. In een fel tweeluik hakt hij in op enkele heilige huisjes van de hedendaagse circuspraktijk.
Circus heeft vele gezichten, vele maskers ook. Het is een persoon die lijdt aan een ernstige identiteitscrisis.
Circus is een goedkope hoer. Ze verkoopt haar vlees aan de sensatiemarkt, opgedirkt en hevig opgemaakt. Gefocust op hoe ze er uit ziet, op esthetiek. Maar bij gebrek aan ethiek is haar schoonheid ver te zoeken.
Circus is een nostalgische oude man. Hij baadt in zijn kennis van de traditie. Dat is immers zijn enige houvast want het ontbreekt hem aan geloof in de toekomst.
Circus is een puber. Hij ontdekt en verkent zijn fysieke potentieel. Hij brandt van opwinding en adrenaline, maar leeft als een blinde want het ontbreekt hem aan interesse in het bredere kunstenveld, oude meesters en visionaire kunstenaars.
Circus is een gekke professor. Hij democratiseert kennis, maar zijn discipelen maken werk dat wordt beheerst door rede, techniek en discipline.
Circus is een hippie die fluit speelt en liefde predikt zonder enige echte ambitie.
Al deze gezichten en maskers zijn vals. Al deze gezichten en maskers zijn waar. Maar ik moet bekennen dat dit circus mij absoluut niet prikkelt.
Kunst prikkelt mij.
Ik wacht op het circus om haar maskers af te leggen en ons haar menselijke gezicht te tonen. Ik wil contrasten zien die zichtbaar worden door abstractie te maken van de vorm.

Ik denk dat de uitdaging voor circusartiesten vandaag niet ligt in het fysieke vertoon van acrobatisch risico, maar wel in de vastberadenheid om een artistieke identiteit door te duwen en die echt te verdedigen. Het risico nemen om datgene te doen waarvan je voelt dat het moet gedaan worden, als enige juiste en ware keuze in je artistieke roeping. Het risico durven nemen om ‘avant-garde’ genoemd te worden. Of ‘niet echt circusachtig’. Of zelfs saai. Dát is gedurfd! Dát is opwindend.
Vergeet het valse idee dat een salto gevaarlijk zou zijn, of dat handenstand en eenwieler rijden ‘op het randje’ zijn. Gelul. Been there, done that en meestal zijn ze niet gevaarlijk. Wanneer ik één dag met mijn fiets door Brussel rijd, neem ik meer risico dan in de tien jaar waarin ik nu hand-op-handacrobatie én bascule samen doe.
Neem de artistieke verantwoordelijkheid om te creëren, om fouten te maken, om op je bek te gaan en opnieuw te beginnen. Gebruik de durf die nodig is om een acrobatische/sportieve discipline te leren. Gebruik het doorzettingsvermogen dat nodig is om je eigen lichaam dag in dag uit te martelen en, vooral, zet die durf elders in: op een persoonlijk, menselijk en artistiek niveau.
Dus, wat zal het zijn?
Vasthouden aan die vals-romantische perceptie van lichamen in gevaar? Of evolueren naar een meer interessante staat waarin kunstenaars op het randje van hun eigen comfortzone werken?
De comfortzone van circusartiesten wordt steeds veilig bewaakt door die valse perceptie van risico. Zich verbergen achter techniek en daardoor eigenlijk nooit de vraag beantwoorden.
Zogezegde circusartiesten schreeuwen: “Hé, kijk naar dit en dit, dat is toch ook leuk? Dat is genoeg risico, toch?”
Ik antwoord: “Nee, dat is het niet. Think again.”
