Het Europees project Unpack the Arts draait op volle toeren, de residenties zijn een succes en de artikels stromen binnen. We lichten graag een fragment uit het artikel van de Poolse journaliste Anna Bys. Zij zag op het Franse festival CIRCa in Auch de afstudeervoorstelling ‘This is the end’ van de gerenommeerde circushogeschool CNAC en maakt enkele interessante vergelijkingen met theater en schilderkunst.
“Wat zou je doen als je maar 5 minuten meer te leven had?” – elke performer beantwoordt deze vraag publiekelijk. De antwoorden zijn verre van origineel, maar de achterliggende idee van de regisseur mag gewaardeerd worden: hij confronteert de jonge artiesten met het Absolute en drijft hen zo tot het uiterste, wat een creatieve formule is voor een eindvoorstelling. In één oogopslag zijn de studenten helden en heldinnen geworden.
De Russische toneelschrijver Ivan Vyrypaev had een gelijkaardig idee toen hij voorstelde om zijn eigen stuk ‘UFO.Kontakt’ te gebruiken als eindvoorstelling aan de Nationale Academie voor Toneelkunsten in Krakau. ‘UFO.Kontakt’ omvat tien monologen door personen die beweren contact gehad te hebben met buitenaardse beschavingen. Alle spelers hebben hun eigen achtergrond en beroep. Hun beschrijving van de ontmoetingen zijn ook allemaal verschillend. Maar wat ze wel allen gemeen hebben, is het besef van iets belangrijks en finaals te beleven. Ons gedrag in extreme situaties onthult onze ware aard.
Regisseur David Bobee laat zijn studenten spreken – iets wat een verrassend effect kan hebben in een circusvoorstelling. Het heeft geen zin de monologen te analyseren – ze zijn doordeweeks, informeel, voorspelbaar zelfs. Het is een raadselachtige introductie van gesproken woord in een circusvoorstelling. Om technische redenen gebruiken de artiesten microfoons. Enerzijds klinken de ongetrainde stemmen van de studenten ongeveinsd (in hun amateurisme), anderzijds maken hun mislukte pogingen om de richtlijnen van de regisseur te volgen, hun taal opzichtig. Ze zijn geen theatrale acteurs – ze spreken op een alledaagse manier, nu eens ongearticuleerd, dan weer met overdreven intonatie, alsof ze deelnemen aan een plechtige schoolbijeenkomst.
Toch is de oprechtheid wel aanwezig in de lichamen van de spelers. Het gesproken woord staat in schril contrast met de artistieke expressie van gespannen spieren. Het lichaam van de acrobaat levert een gevecht met de zwaartekracht. Op een gegeven moment verschijnt de boodschap: “Je veux voler et mourir dans l’air” (ik wil vliegen en sterven in de lucht). Deze droom wordt op een bepaalde manier werkelijkheid. De studenten brengen de laatste vijf minuten van hun leven door in de circuspiste. De wereld barst uit zijn voegen, natuurkundige wetten gelden niet langer, de atmosferische druk zakt. Doorsnee meubilair zweeft naar de top van de circustent. Het doet denken aan Marc Chagalls schilderijen over de circuskunsten maar ook zijn portretten waarin modellen al vliegend de zwaartekracht negeren. Blijkbaar heeft de Apocalyps ook een sprookjesachtig karakter.
