Een dansante symfonie voor één acrobaat, twee speakers, een tiental geluidsdoosjes en 100 bijzondere rugzakken: ‘Murmur’ zoekt de grens op tussen acrobatie en geluid. De nieuwe kleutervoorstelling van Grensgeval is een artistiek waagstuk dat even spannend voor kinderen als voor volwassenen is. En dat is waar het Hanne Vandersteene en Mahlu Mertens om te doen is: “We willen geen voorstelling maken waarvan volwassenen zeggen: ‘Oh, zo leuk voor mijn kind!’ Het moet ook hen fascineren.”
In hun debuut ‘PLOCK!’, geïnspireerd op het werk van action painter Jackson Pollock, ging acrobaat Camiel Corneille aan de slag met kwasten en verfklodders (en zelfs even een kleuter als penseel!). Maakten Hanne Vandersteene en Mahlu Mertens toen de cross-over tussen circus en beeldende kunst, dan ageren ze voor ‘Murmur’ op de grens met geluidskunst. In samenwerking met Stijn Dickel van Aifoon, de kunstorganisatie die werkt rond luisteren en geluid, creëren ze een arena waarin Camiel niet alleen de strijd én de straps aanbindt met twee kolossen van geluidsboxen maar ook de natuur, die doorheen de elektronica klinkt, omarmt en deelt met het publiek.
“Stijn heeft een enorme database aan geluiden – vraag hem om het geluid van een meeuw en hij geeft je er vijftien soorten – maar we zijn ook nog talrijke nieuwe geluiden gaan sprokkelen. Ik denk dat ze vreemd opgekeken hebben tijdens onze eerste dagen circusresidentie in Neerpelt waar we, in plaats van ons in de repetitieruimte te verschansen, met hoofdtelefoons en micro’s doorheen de bossen en de gebouwen van Dommelhof struinden,” lacht Hanne. “Zo zit er – voor wie het niet weet, haast onherkenbaar – het geluid van een regenpijp en de lift van Dommelhof in de voorstelling. Hier in Oostende hebben we de geluiden van een speelplaats vlakbij cultuurcentrum De Grote Post in de voorstelling geïntegreerd.”
Aan de zaaldeuren van De Grote Post kwebbelen tachtig vierjarige schoolkinderen luidruchtig door elkaar, vol ongeduld wachtend op de try-out van ‘Murmur’. “Circus, we gaan circus zien!” zegt een jongetje enthousiast tegen mij met een air van ‘ik weet het wel.’ “Ben je al naar het circus geweest?” vraag ik. Hij schudt het hoofd. “Ik heb wel een boek over circus thuis,” zegt hij. “Over een olifant en een leeuw.” Maar er is geen leeuw of olifant te bekennen bij het binnenkomen van de zaal. Wel rugzakjes voor iedereen om aan te doen. Ik voel de eerste twijfel, niet alleen bij de kinderen maar ook bij de aanwezige juffen. Dit wordt geen circus zoals het te voorzien en te verwachten was. Wanneer Camiel de piste betreedt, klinkt vanuit zijn ene broekzak het knisperende geluid van voetstappen, in de andere broekzak klinkt klotsend water, uit de zweetband rond zijn pols ronkt een poes. Samen met hem reageren de kinderen al even verbaasd op die microkosmos op zijn lijf. Maar dan blijkt niet alleen zijn lijf geluid te maken. Racende auto’s of een zwerm bijen? Ook onze rugzakken zitten vol leven.
‘Elk nadeel heb zijn voordeel,’ zo luidt de legendarische uitspraak van voetballer Johan Cruijff. En eigenlijk geldt dat ook voor het ontstaan van ‘Murmur’, vertelt Mahlu. “In een bepaalde scène in ‘PLOCK!’ bewoog Camiel met speakers op zijn lichaam. Toen Mieke Versyp, onze dramaturge, zei dat we die scène eruit moesten zwieren wegens niet passend binnen het geheel, waren we enorm gefrustreerd, maar achteraf is die beslissing een cadeau gebleken want het heeft geleid tot deze nieuwe voorstelling. Stijn experimenteert vaak met bewegend geluid en dat intrigeerde ons: hoe kunnen we een compositie maken die ontstaat bij gratie van de beweging in plaats van – wat doorgaans het geval is in de dans – te bewegen op geluid.”
‘Murmur’ mixt industriële geluiden met natuur. Het maakt deze voorstelling tot een krachtig ecologisch statement: Camiel en het publiek als de dragers van de geluiden die de wereld maakt. “Technologie heeft tegenwoordig vaak een negatieve bijklank, waarbij wij – en vooral de jeugd – worden aanzien als technozombies. Terwijl er ook veel schoonheid zit in de verstrengeling,” vindt Mahlu. “Denk maar aan protheses of aan al onze sociale contacten die via technologie verlopen. Die schoonheid willen wij laten zien.” Een idee dat hen erg inspireerde, is dat van de zwerm of hoe een groep individuen zich zo verbonden voelt dat ze samen één beweging vormen. Zoals spreeuwen in de lucht, verbinden de rugzakjes het publiek met elkaar. Volgens Mahlu, die doctoreert aan de UGent met een onderzoek rond eco-literatuur, kan je ‘Murmur’ lezen als een symbool van het post-humanisme. “In het humanisme stonden dieren en objecten ten dienste van de mens. Nu – en zeker met de nakende klimaatcrisis – kunnen we niet ontkennen dat we als mens deel zijn van die wereld en samen een netwerk vormen met dieren en objecten. De grenzen tussen mensen, dier en ding zijn veel poreuzer dan we denken.”
Als we inzoomen is die filosofie ook terug te voeren naar het onderzoek dat Grensgeval en bij uitbreiding veel ander hedendaags circus voert, namelijk dat van de performer die het object niet alleen bemeestert maar zich er ook aan overgeeft. “Hoe kan er een gelijkwaardige relatie tussen circusperformer en object ontstaan en in hoeverre kan dat object een ziel krijgen, een eigen wil, een humeur zelfs. Zo’n kleuter die heel schuchter het geluidsdoosje met vogelgepiep omvat als was het een broos nestje, dat is toch zalig om te zien! Een kindje tijdens de try-out in La Brèche (belangrijke circusstructuur in Frankrijk, red.) vroeg zelfs: ‘Was dat magie die uit mijn rugzak kwam?’ Kinderen gaan veel directer op in die verbeelding dan volwassenen,” vindt Hanne. Mahlu lacht. “Je zegt dat misschien wel, Hanne, dat volwassenen die verbeelding niet meer hebben, maar tel eens de volwassenen die roepen tegen hun computer als die niet doet wat ze vragen. Het enige verschil is dat zij misschien beseffen dat dit niet veel zal uithalen.”
“Kies mij, kies mij!” roepen de bankspringers in het publiek. Camiel gaat heel bewust naar een schuchter jongetje, drukt hem een geluiddoosje aan de borst waaruit een ademhaling rustgevend weerklinkt. Aan de andere kant krijgt een volwassene hetzelfde geluid maar daar krijgt het een erotische geladenheid. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
De twee voorstellingen die Grensgeval tot nog toe maakte, mikken op een piepjong publiek: de leeftijd van vier jaar en ouder. Maar tijdens de try-out bedenk ik me dat zowel ‘PLOCK!’ als ‘Murmur’ in een andere context even goed als een conceptuele abstracte performance zou kunnen worden beschouwd.
Een kind schuifelt in een stiller moment even ongeduldig heen en weer. “Waar is de clown, dit is toch geen circus!” port ze de kleine naast haar aan. Die ‘ssst’ haar in volle concentratie. “Is het misschien theater?” waagt ze nog een poging tot gesprek voor haar aandacht weer naar het spektakel getrokken wordt. Grensgeval brengt verwachtingspatronen aan het wankelen bij de vierjarige die in dat hokjesdenken niet weet van welk hout pijlen maken. En doet hetzelfde met ons, volwassenen.
Hanne lacht als ik het haar vertel. “Weet je, ik vind dat een compliment, dat ze iets hebben meegemaakt dat ze niet kunnen plaatsen. Dat we morrelen aan de clichés en ideeën die soms al vastgeroest zitten, niet alleen in die kleine maar ook in grote mensenhoofden. We zijn ook echt een ‘grensgeval’: we spelen voor kinderen en volwassenen, de een noemt het jeugdtheater, de ander circus, nog een ander objectentheater. Sommige volwassenen vragen ons wel eens: ‘Is jullie werk niet te experimenteel voor zo’n jonge kinderen?’ maar dat is het voordeel aan echt jonge kinderen: door hun grenzeloze fantasie kan je net werken met een grote abstractie. Het gaat er bij hen nog niet om of iets klopt of niet, of wat ermee bedoeld zou kunnen worden, ze gaan zonder scrupules met hun eigen ongebreidelde verbeelding aan de slag. Ze zitten nog in die heerlijke fase voor ‘mijn tekening is mislukt want het lijkt er niet echt op,’” zegt Hanne. “Het fijne is dat het werkt voor alle leeftijden, maar dan op een andere manier,” vindt Mahlu. “Over het geluid in de rugzakjes zal het kleinste kind achteraf vertellen: ‘Er zat een auto in mijn rugzak!’ terwijl oudere kinderen graag wat wijsneuzerig zeggen: ‘Er zat een speaker in mijn rugzak.’”
Na de try-out worden de koppen bijeen gestoken. Wat werkte wel, wat niet en waarom? Kan dat einde nog krachtiger en hoe laat je dolle kinderen op het juiste moment stil zijn aangezien net het geluid cruciaal is in deze voorstelling. Twijfels en vragen die Hanne en Mahlu niet benaderen als een typisch regisseursduo. Ze spreken niet als uit één mond, zijn geen twee handen op één buik. Ze maken niet elkaars zinnen af of zijn vastgeroest in het patroon van de betweter en de bijzit. Ja, ze zijn een duo, maar eerder is het alsof ze samen een compositie schrijven bestaande uit punt en contrapunt: wanneer de ene spreekt met stellige zekerheid, spreekt de andere met gerede twijfel, wanneer de andere getuigt van daadkracht toont de andere gevoel voor dwaallust. En zo houden ze elkaar in evenwicht.
“Hanne is veel intuïtiever en vertrekt vanuit het grote alles. Terwijl ik net omgekeerd redeneer en start vanuit de vraag: waar willen we naartoe?” vindt Mahlu. “We zijn complementair aan elkaar, we zoeken naar hetzelfde, maar nemen andere wegen. In de voorbereiding voeren we echt een dialoog en zijn we gelijkwaardig, maar eens we de vloer opgaan werken we met een eerste en een tweede plan. De ene dag ben ik aan zet, de volgende dag zij. De ene probeert, de andere beschouwt.” “Dat werkt het beste, niet alleen voor ons, maar zeker ook voor de mensen waarmee we samenwerken, zo hebben we gemerkt. We zijn beide nogal koppige doordouwers dus als we met twee tegelijk verschillende input geven, creëer je alleen maar kortsluiting in de kop van Camiel of Stijn,” lacht Hanne. “Eenmaal naar de eindfase, bij de montage van de voorstelling, splitsen onze rollen zich op. Dan bekijk ik meer de ‘verticale dramaturgie’, de compositie van elke scène an sich, terwijl Mahlu de ‘horizontale dramaturgie’, de grotere boog van het geheel voor haar rekening neemt.”
Hun partnerschap gaat terug tot de schoolbanken. Ze ontmoetten elkaar aan de Toneelacademie van Maastricht, maar een eerste samenwerking liep met een sisser af en de grondige belofte om nooit meer samen te werken. De wederzijdse bewondering voor elkaars werk bleef echter, waardoor ze aan de eindmeet, voor hun afstudeerproject, toch besloten opnieuw samen te werken. De eerder fysieke aanpak van Hanne in combinatie met de rationele kant van Mahlu wierp vruchten af en samen richtten ze Grensgeval op. Geen gratuite naamkeuze: het was meteen duidelijk dat ze de grenzen van disciplines wilden opzoeken met werk dat zowel voor kinderen als volwassenen bestemd is.
“Ik zat zelf als kind in de ateliers van de Kopergietery en het speelse, de verwondering van het jeugdtheater, heeft me eigenlijk nooit losgelaten,” vertelt Hanne. “Toen al was ik veel meer geboeid door het fysieke spel dan door tekst. Toen ik later mijn ingangsexamen deed aan de toneelschool, moesten we een tekst van Elia Canetti brengen, ik heb toen bijna alle tekst geschrapt en deed iets met rolschaatsen en tal van objecten. Ik heb een haat-liefdeverhouding met tekst. Een tekst kan zo schoon en inspirerend zijn, maar eens die inspiratie zich fysiek vertaalt, vind ik het vaak dubbelop en wil ik de tekst zo snel mogelijk weer weg.” Ook hier toont zich het punt en contrapunt in het regisseursduo, want Mahlu is dan weer een begenadigd dichter waarvan onlangs een eerste dichtbundel ‘Ik tape je bed’ succesvol werd onthaald.
“Tijdens onze deelname aan het ‘Coach-de-coach’-programma (een initiatief van Circuscentrum in samenwerking met Kopergietery waarbij circusartiesten de cross-over aangaan met artiesten uit andere disciplines, red.) voerden we vele gesprekken met circusartiesten,” vertelt Hanne. “Na mijn toneelopleiding, waar de nadruk vooral op tekst lag, voelde het circus met zijn fysieke taal voor mij echt als thuiskomen. Circus is een bijzonder hybride kunstvorm met een grote openheid en generositeit die ik in de andere kunsten soms mis. Ik vind circus veruit de meest spannende kunstvorm van het moment.” Mahlu houdt vooral van wat ze de ‘ge-aardheid’ van circusartiesten noemt. Een soort zelfredzaamheid zonder veel poespas of lucht verkopen. Maar dat gezegd zijnde, is er ook nog werk aan de winkel binnen circus voor kinderen, vindt ze: “Circus is heel lang beschouwd geweest als familie-entertainment. De afgelopen vijftien jaar heeft het circus in Vlaanderen zich geëmancipeerd als een hedendaagse kunstvorm, maar in het maken van die beweging is circuskunst iets voor volwassenen geworden. Het is nu tijd om die cirkel terug rond te maken en te kijken hoe we in circus als kunstvorm voor kinderen ook kunnen groeien.”
